Tethering my epic touch 4g to my acer tablet - Acer Iconia A500

okay heres the deal i have a epic touch 4g and an acer iconia tablet.. i want to tether my 3g/ 4g connection from my epic touch 4g to my iconia tablet..
Now.. both the tablet and acer iconia tablet are rooted and on gingerbread 2.3
i have the wifi tethering app installed on my epic touch 4g. it works as i tested it with my laptop and it connects, i believe the connection is 802.11n in (adhoc) meaning theres the 3 computer pyramid thing in windows when i connect to it.. i can use it to surf my laptop...
BUT its not showing up on my tablet under wifi connections... so im trying to figure out what i need to do to get it working. so i can use the 4g from my phone on my tablet.

look in development section for ad-hoc fix. This is a simple file replacement you need to do on your tablet.must have root and a root file explorer I use root explorer.

ad hoc for xoom

so with my minimal knowledge of phone stuffs ive kinda learned that when i run the wireless tether for root app on my phone it uses ad hoc to supply other computers with internet... basically im asking, will my evo be able to supply my xoom with internet?
Not at the moment, no support for Ad-Hoc networks in HC, not sure if there ever will be - very annoying.
I'm not sure but I believe there is a new version of Wireless Tether that will allow such a connection. When I first tried the Kindle connecting to my DX, it wouldn't connect. With the new version, it does.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
My Xoom connects to my DX with no problems.
Go download Wireless Tether from the website. The experimental one is called Wifi Tether now. Works like a charm for infrastructure mode so that the Xoom can tether with your phone. Also Bluetooth seems to work fine as well.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Is the Wireless tether for the phone or the Xoom (or both)? I need an option for the iPhone in case the steps posted here won't work!
is this an app that enables ad-hoc detection on the Xoom,
or
does it just provide a full wifi hotspot tethering feature for Android devices?
I also use an iPhone which supplies an ad-hoc hotspot connection that I need my Xoom to recognize and connect to.
So does that mean you got it to work that way? Is the app available through the Market?
No its not available in the market. Google wireless tether and look for wifi tether. The new app sends the signal via infrastructure mode. I think it applies to certain phone like Droid X and EVO.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
The Wireless Tether app is ran on the host phone wanting to be turned into a wifi hotspot. There are certain phones that run in Ad-Hoc mode in default (aka Droid 1) and the only option to tether the Xoom to them is via bluetooth. As others have said, the new version "WiFi Tether" is apparently enabling infrastructure mode rather than Ad-hoc mode, something that the Xoom can actually connect to.
There is no app that you install on the Xoom. When the WiFi Tether is ran on the host device, the Xoom just connects to it as a WiFi router and works just fine (or bluetooth if thats what you're doing).
So OP, if you can't get the new version of WiFi tether to work for you and your Xoom, try the Bluetooth tethering option, it's been shown in detail in a thread here how to do it, and it should work just fine.

The app is for android, and for the host device not the Xoom, so you'll need to Bluetooth tether your iPhone.
wpa_supplicant
I understand exactly what the OP is talking about, as i'm trying to do the same thing. What makes matters worse, is that ad-hoc connections ARE possible in android. Meaning android can connect to ad-hoc networks, but it requires swapping out the wpa_suppplicant file in system/bin with a modified one that doesn't filter out ad-hoc networks.
i've even tested this on my EVO, and it connects to other android phones incapable of broadcasting in infrastructure mode, it even connects to my ubuntu netbook broadcasting in ad-hoc...
(if you want to see what i'm talking, just search the forums for wpa_supplicant, something will turn up )
I've tried doing the same "fix" with my xoom, but it doesn't take. Using ADB or root explorer, i've replaced the orignal (making sure to save a copy just in case) and fixed permissions to 775, but it doesn't take. The wifi antenna will turn on, but it doesn't find anything once being replaced, not even saved networks or access points. I can get wifi back by restoring my backup, but i'm at a loss as to why it doesn't work on the xoom (3.0) but does with my evo (2.3).
as a side note, i'm using the right replacement for the wpa version returned by entering
"wpa_supplicant -v" in a terminal emulator or adb. It returns version v0.6.10 and there is a working, modified, v0.6.10 that should make things work, but doesn't....
anyway, if anyone has any input, i would love to hear it!
I am in the same boat. Regardless of whatever permission settings I have tried (mentioned in the dev forums that I can't yet post in), I still get a dead wifi with the new supplicant file.
Ah, I feel better now. It must have been the supplicant file, as I found this other one and it worked without permission modifications first time out.
You will have to google "xoom supplicant" and use the file found on the first response (android.net)-I can't post the link- the downside to attitude having, overlord type forums is inability for new users to provide any help, or at least with any convenience.
i try connecting my xoom to my computer, and it wouldn't work. i have the "Intel My Wifi Technology" but each time i set up a connection, the xoom finds it, but will take like a minute trying to connect and all i see on the xoom is "Obtaining IP address". it shows on my computer that a new device is connected. maybe this only works computer to computer. cuz i have had success with another laptop connecting to my computer with no problem.
I am using the Launchpad kernel and the WPASupplicant file and am connected to my phone's ad-Hoc network now. I used the beta Wi-Fi Tether and it worked great, but crashed my Samsung Galaxy S at least twice a day. So I installed the WPA file without setting any special permissions, just used Root Explorer to copy it an it worked fine.
Is there a way to connect on a ad-hoc hostet by a laptop (win7) yet?
That would be interesting, cause if it work this way, it will work for every phone or something else!
Hey Guys,
i am having a little problem. i am using the Intel My Wifi Technology. and i don't know if i am doiing something wrong or this is just not possible. but i try connecting my xoom to my laptop, and it is not working or connecting. i get a message on the xoom that say's Obtaining IP address", but nothing happen on the xoom. is this not yet possible on the xoom. i don't know if this is consider ad-hoc network or not, cuz i am new to all this.
but here is the link to intel website for the program i am using as a wifi hotspot.
http://www.intel.com/products/wireless/mywifi.htm
and here is a video of what the program does.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuAQjR76A68
anyone with knowlwdge on this please help me understand what i am doing wrong or not doing. or even if this is a possibility.
If you're not opposed to rooting your Xoom, here's another option. I just unlocked and rooted my WiFi-only Xoom yesterday, and inserted the supplicant file in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033314
It works like a charm! I'm running a WinMo Touch Pro 2 with WMWiFiRouter, and the Xoom now sees and properly connects to Ad Hoc networks. And, it still works with all other networks.
I don't know which way you prefer to attack the problem (from the Xoom or the phone), but I've been thrilled ever since I got all this done yesterday. Everything else on the Xoom is great, and now I've got the working SD card as well.

Wi/Fi Tether From Droid X --> Xoom Wi/Fi

My Droid X is rooted and I regularly use Wireless Tether for Root app. I purposely bought the Xoom Wi/fi instead of the 3g for this wonderful advantage. I've review steps for the Xoom 3G tether, but I'm thinking this is a little different for the Wi/Fi model. When i am tethering from my Droid X, my Xoom does not recognize my network? Dont know if anyone has had some success on this yet.
Forgot to add, my xoom is unlocked and rooted as well.
Make sure you are using Infrastructure mode on the Droid X.
EDIT: I can't seem to find that option at the moment...
Well i couldnt figure it out using the Wireless Tether for Root app, but it worked flawlessly using the 3G Hotspot app by verizon, using Team Blackhat's hack.
I don't know how it is on the Droid X, but my Wi-Fi Xoom tethers to my Captivate just fine.
miui on evo 4g tether works fine. set up my first boot in the parking lot with it.
I use the stock tethering app on MT4G and GS4G and it works great. When i try wifi tether i cant see the network either. I had this same problem on my ZuneHD.
Using an Eris right now and I'm having no luck with bluetooth or normal tether. Eris is rooted, Xoom WiFi model is not.
EDIT: Just found out that the Eris uses Ad-Hoc for tethering not AP. Looks like I may be screwed.
Just a followup, I setup the Wireless Tether for Root on my Droid X and my xoom connects to it no problem.
Ive been able to connect to both TBH hotspot hack and wireless tether with no issues.

Download Fission ROM Manager, install Fission ROM for DX, install tether patch and 3G Hotspot app. Tethering to Xoom should work...
Tether patch will modify NVRAM on DX and the 3G Hotspot is just a modified Verizon Hotspot app. Get all the tethering you want without having a tethering package
Fwiw : my Dinc running CM7 teathers fine with my Wifi Xoom just using the native teather feature. No downloads or setup required.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
My N1 tethers to my Xoom just peachy, no root or anything needed.
It appears that AdHoc mode on Droid X and Samsung Epic work fine with the Xoom? Maybe im nuts, but I thought Android wouldn't connect to ad hoc....im probably nuts.
I'm having no luck tethering my recently purchased wifi xoom. I am using a mytouch 3g with all variants of wireless tether.... i know my tether works because my rooted nook with CM7 can see it and LOGIN with no problems. I added the wpa variant that helped my nook see ad hoc wireless.
Please if someone has a solution i will be externally grateful.
Yeah my xoom wasn't reading my phones tether since its adhoc(Using WirelessTether from market), on their website they have a new thing called "wifi tether" and it works perfectly.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
"WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.0-pre12 *** EXPERIMENTAL ***"
Then in setup method change it from adhoc to softap, so far so good..

Thanks but unfortunately my phone (mytouch magic) doesn't give me that option. I tried nexus one device and selected softap, but still no good.
Looks like I need to somehow tweak my wifi xoom to recognize ad hoc wireless router. I have just 6 months till my phone contract ends, but that's too long to wait.... if this doesn't work i may have to return my xoom
Anyone know how to unlock the ad hoc wireless on the zoom?

Has ANYONE found out ANYTHING about tethering w/ the ERIS? I can connect via bluetooth BUT then my Eris reboots and I lose the connection.
This is the only issue that probably will have me returning if I can't connect to internet on my phone when I'm away from wifi.

Sounds like we need to tweak the wpa file in system>app to make it accept ad hoc.
I have Samsung Captivate with mobile AP enabled. However i am not able to get good tethering speed on my xoom. I ran a speedtest on the captivate which has HSUPA enabled and i get 1.5MB download speed and 2MB upload but my xoom barely gets 100KB download. Any ideas?

If you're trying to wifi tether, check out this thread for info on how to update the Iconia to allow for ad-hoc wifi network support.
Basically you backup the current wpa_supplicant file, replace it with a downloaded/updated copy, fix permissions on the new file, reboot.
<edit>Bah ya beat me to it ;P
This thread might be of use to you depending on how you're tethering:

I'm not much help with all that as I have no trouble tethering my A500 to my HTC Evo 4G via bluetooth or wifi tether. Two wifi tether apps were included in Myn's Warm 2.2 ROM that I have on my Evo. I was surprised to see so many people having tethering issues.
Edit: Beat 2x to the punch! Man, you guys are fast! Haha.

WinMo should have an option to turn on Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (DUN), turn that on, then pair the phone to your tablet and you should see a "Tethering" option show up on the tablet in the Bluetooth settings for the pairing. Check out this post (sorry, on a diff. site) but skip down to step 9 (as 1-8 cover Android phone tethering.) The pictorial was inspired/derived from this post here on XDA.
Note: you may have to have a tethering plan active on your phone service for this to fully work. I'm a bit fuzzy on this, it's been 2 years since I had my Samsung WinMo phone.

If the phone supports bluetooth or wifi tether and your network provider hasn't blocked it, yes. Back when I had my WinMo phone I had to pay for a tethering plan, which I stopped after a couple months and only turned back on when I had to for work (& billed work for the extra $$)
Yesterday, I came to mobile store and try this function. As you introduced above, I turned on Bluetooth and had paired my X2 Winmo phone with A500 but I could not find Tethering option on A500. Although I tried and work find with my Acer laptop via PAN wire or PAN Bluetooth meaning my network provider support fully tethering. I wonder A500 can not tethering with Winmo phone or I misses complete steps.
I any idea for me?

WIFI or USB Tether Photon and Thrive

Good morning Android friends need some help. I have a Motorola Photon rooted my provider is sprint. I have a Toshiba Thrive tablet none rooted. I installed WIFI tether version 3.1 on my photon and it works great with my laptop from work or my home laptop however I cannot get it to work with my Thrive.
Any suggestions or ideas
think it only supports adhoc and the Thrive does not unless your root.
I have tetherd my Epic to my Moms Thrive just to test it out with her & it worked grate.
What are your setting on the photons wireless thether app?
Have you tryed the betas on the google code page?
Sent from the Drivers Seat of my Suby txting and Driving doing 100MPH+ in a school zone! Ha.
I am running WiFi Tether and it works fine BUT I did have to change the LAN settings from the default 192.168.1.x to the 10. IP address as it was conflicting with an existing wireless network in the area and then everything began working correctly. But now works without issue
My photon is rooted and Im using WIFI tether. I rooted my Thrive as well, but it still won't recognize my WIFI tether. Is there something else that I need to do to get my Thrive to recognize my photon as a hotspots using WIFI tether?

If you go to ThriveForums.org, you can find what you are looking for. If not, PM me and I may be able to send you the wpa_suplicant file you will need to get this to work.
I would download on of Dalepl's ROM's. They will have the patch you need and they work great! I've been super happy with my TT since!
Got everything installed and it's working perfectly. Wifi Tether is working great. Thanks!!! Really appreciate you taking the time to set this up for all of us!
I using WP7.5 on HD2 for wifi Tether and it works fine instead of using Android. T-Mobile didn't charge for the Tether on WP7.

[Q] can't connect to phone's hotspot

I just got the Acer Iconia A500 8gb. I know nothing about rooting or flashing or new rom or w/e. It's stock OS (android 3.2)
The tablet can't connect to my phone's wifi hotspot
iPhone 3G
MyWi tethering app
T-Mobile
Please help
If you need more details, let me know
Are you trying to connect to the hotspot on your iPhone 3g? If you are, that means you don't have wifi hotspot, but personal hotspot, which connects through bluetooth. I am pretty sure you cannot do this on stock ROM, you need to root it in order to enable this functionality. I was able to connect to a personal hotspot on an iPhone 3Gs with Thor's ROM.
Furthermore if you are trying to connect to a phone with wifi hotspot, that will not work either as stock tablets cannot connect to ad-hoc networks. There is a specific file that is in the android system that disables this ability.
Not sure if that is totally correct. My G2 which is rooted can be run as a wifi hotspot, and when my tablet was on stock 3.2 unrooted, it connected to it without issue... Unless I've completely misunderstood your post.
ad-hoc support
i think the phones hot spot is ad-hoc if this is true .. you will have to downgrade. root and replace the ad-hoc file .
the iconia does not support ad-hoc networks out of the box.
this is all over this forum.. probably the very most asked Question.. Do a simple search and you will find more information.

That's odd, maybe your G2 runs the wifi hotspot in infrastructure mode. I was under the impression that all hotspot features on phones were ad-hoc though, but I most certainly could be wrong.

That's what I read all over the place too.
In terms of connecting to the iPhone though, the iPhone4 was the first iPhone to introduce wifi hotpot. The previous gen have personal hotspot which connected through bluetooth. I know that an unrooted Iconia cannot connect to a 3Gs's personal hotspot. I've tried it and when I switched to Thor's ROM, I was able to connect to it.
