I know the Samsung Gtab 10.1 is appealing but the Asus EEE Pad Transformer is looking very appealing. And if the cost stay as low as they say $400, that would make it a steal for me.
I know that the Samsung display is a PLS and the Asus is IPS, but the price...

Hope this is in keeping with this thread's intent?
There (apparently) is a tab called NotionInk that's been recommended to me as a cheaper alternative to the Galaxy but the info that I can find appears a little scant.

It's called Notion Ink Adam - but it's not cheaper (than old 7'' Galaxy Tab) and it's hard too get. There is a forum here for Adams.
IF, you do not need docking station with keyboard.
IF, GT 10.1 will have Samsungs own SoC instead of Tegra 2 and you want something that does not require hours to convert video material in order to be able to watch it on tablet than NO. It is NO alternative to GT 10.1
Iv been thinking about this too. Its a great price and has a good screen. Tegra isn't **** and we still don't know what chip will be in the GT and its still a while to release.
In terms of video. The only problem is high profile stuff .. I'm thinking as soon as vlc gets released for android that may solve our problems

VLC realease should be close. I'll probably wait. I waited years for a good tablet, I can wait a month longer. I can (really).

I wouldn't call the Tegra 2 "****" specifically, but by todays standards it is only decent. The Tegra fails in comparison to Apple's A5, and many people are looking to Samsung's Exynos to even the field. We can only hope it will, as Samsung's Hummingbird processor was amazing... Samsung is oddly keeping very quiet about this.
Yea I get that. But at the end all it really gives is tthe video potential.. games are developed and optimized for tegra so they will def work with tegra...
Yea the apple processor kills it in graphics but so what? Games are the same .. no lag on tegra in gaming ..

I will have an eee pad transformer on Saturday. It will keep me going until the 10.1 arrives. By that time I will be able to upgrade if I feel the need. The eee is certainly an attractive tablet at an attractive price.

You can't upgrade from a transformer to a tab 10.1, if you read the specs the transformer has the better spec especially of you use the keyboard dock with full USB 2.0 at another £50, the screen is total class the best i've seen on any android device anywhere and a zillion times better than the xoom, plus full HDMI etc.
It's released next week in the UK 16th April, already cancelled my xoom order
Can't believe there's no froum on here
Yes, you can upgrade.
New GT 10,1 will have a better bat. life and better screen
If you do not need full USB 2.0 (in keyboard!!! only) and keyboard itself) no reason to go for Transformer.
Probably it will have worse cpu (tegra 2 against exynos), is thicker and heavier...
If one needs just an Android tablet GT 10.1 seems to be the best one coming (in 10.1 size)

A better battery than 18 hrs the asus tab has a 9.5 hr battery and the keyboard holds another 8.5, and if you compare prices the asus will still work out over £50 cheaper than just the samsung on it's own
Better screen than the IPS one doesn't think so does one
If buying android devices has tought me anything it's that just paying more doesn't automatically mean you get better

That is why I wrote about keyboard. I just want a tablet - I do not need keybord and I do not plan to carry anything like that with me. I already ave a netbook... why would I want another one?
When tablet itself is considered... GT 10.1N (N for new) has bigger battery (+), is thinner (+), is lighter (+).
For me (and I suppose all ppl. that do not need keyboard docking station) winner is clear - even if it is slightly more expensive.
One more thing... no one knows how this docking thing will actually work in 6 months... and just to have physical buttons to write few posts and e-mails...? Unless you really work with text but than again - wouldn't Windows 7 device be better choice to work?
One more thing.... with GT10.1 I can have small. sexy stand... maybe use it as a second screen with my desktop... with keybord docking station one needs extra space. You either have all the time with you (extra weight) or you need spece in drawer for it (but than why would you buy it?) or extra cover and space on the dest so it will not gather tons of dust! In my opinion in case of tablet (and according to MY NEEDA ) this is not money well spend.

Better screen??? How???
IPS (Transformer) vs Super PLS (Tab) http://bit.ly/h2smoN (another PLUS)
As I said - for me there is only one winner here... GT10.1 seems like the best 10.1 tablet announced so far.

You don't have to have the keyboard docking station of you don't want it, they're both available seperately, you can always use the standard touchscreen honeycomb board or swipe.
I know I do not have to buy keyboard. But without keyboard GT 10.1 (new) is lighter, thinner and with better battery.
Again, if it will be confirmed that it will also have different CPU (without Tegra'2 video playbeck limitations) FOR ME it is a better choice.
If it will be based as 10.1v and Transformer on Tegra 2 I think I will buy Transformer since it will be sooner in the shops.
But I will wait for official confirmation (either way) by Samsung
I already ordered Transformer because I don't mind converting from time to time and I feel that Samsung will want to throw 10.1v in Europe first and 10.1 will be late here.
I ordered my Transformer on Saturday from Comet for delivery yesterday morning, and it turned up 15 minutes before I had to leave to catch the train to Paris. I've been playing with it off and on and it really is very nice - the screen is beautiful and it really feels like a quality item.
However, it is much bigger and quite a bit heavier than my 7" Galaxy Tab, so I suspect it will likely stay at home on the coffee table in future. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 may occupy the sweet spot between the 7" Tab and the 10.1" Transformer in terms of size/weight, but the Transformer is excellent value for money.
I did originally have it on preorder with Amazon for the bundle with the keyboard dock, but decided I couldn't wait - the keyboard dock has already been ordered and paid for direct from AsusTek for £54.98p!
Regards,
Dave
Can you say if it has the same problems with video playback as Xoom?
My main interest is mkv (high profile) 720p.
Also (as I can not find it at asus web site) I suppose it has DLNA. If by any chance you have NAS drive - how is with playback from this device?
If someone would like to help me out and write a review for tabletowo.pl (it will be translated to Polish by me and your name will be used) I will be grateful - please PM me.
I'm travelling for work at the moment, so I can't test much in the way of video since I don't have much here to test.
What I can tell you is, it does have a DLNA client/server, though it is rather odd since some of the language is in Spanish (may be italian) even though the Tab is configured to be in English. I did try connecting to my Galaxy Tab, using the Tab as a DNLA server and a WiFi hotspot, but when I started AllShare on the Tab, it switched off the mobile hotspot and turned regular WiFi back on.
Unlike the Galaxy Tab, the Transformer has no native DivX support, so I've installed RockPlayer and VPlayer, and will probably give them a try tonight on a DivX or too, but I've no 720p MKVs to test.

Dave

LOL... here we go again !
You're in the Acer A500 forum and asking the above question ??
That's like me seeing you driving a Mercedes and asking you if you chose the Benz over the BMW
... better put on a flame suit ...LOL
I know everyone here has the Acer, my question was who was down to choosing between the two and why the went with the Acer? Sorry for the confusion.....

I think also it's good to someone know what is better
If I go to BMW I ask
what you got better than MERCEDES... sell me your product
ok
- Asus
Better screen but got some light leaking...
More battery but overweighted (with keyboard 1.2kg arround but 16 Hours of battery... hu...)
Keyboard... well can be usefull sometimes and that serve as a dock so...
Nice weather stock widget ( I love it)
Less bloatware (maybe)
after I can't tell
ACER
all in one : USB, hdmi, sdcard
battery 8 hours (normal usage, game a little, wifi etc...)
FULL USB.... plug a little hub and you got mouse (3.1), keyboard, and also.... HardDrive 1TB(maybe 2TB max) can be plug in...
DOLBY that sound is great.
stronger material... my opinion.

I did. my friends recommend transformer because of its popularity, so I went to store and played with the sample, it looks ugly. here are some reasons I picked a500:
1. for $30 more you get 32G and a case
2. metal case, looks solid and for sure a little bit heavier
3. nice design, in my opinion it is the most beautiful android tablet. I compared asus, fujitsu and toshiba, cosmetically, a500 is the best
4. I love the usb port, mouse, keyboard, u-disk, you name it.
my only complain is that it doesn't do usb charging. well, others don't do it either.
besides, you can get it from costco, if you don't like it, take it back. costco.com also sells other tablets, but they are all over priced in my opinion.
I just got the Acer because of the USB port. Right now target has them for 399 and somewhere around the a500gb is a coupon for $50 off tablets @ staples. I believe you can have them price check targets price can use the coupon. Transformer has a better screen but the acers USB can come handy. I love my new a500!
Can't find the post but here's the coupon: http://reg.e.staples.com/c/s/tagfrm/hBOHH28B7SHGCB8cS0jNsq8x311/coupon.html?storeId=10001&AID=10428703&CID=AFF%253A552179%253A552179%253A10428703&cm_mmc=CJ-_-552179-_-552179-_-10428703&SID=VGg5cWlnb0JDalFBQUdAbEdmQUFBQU11&PID=552179&n=550

I actually had a Transformer and returned it for the Acer. Most reviews do seem to come out in favor of the Transformer, but if you read between the lines, it is always the keyboard dock that tilts it in the Transformers favor. Putting a battery in the dock to extend the battery life is a great idea. Unfortunately, based on what I read, it doesn't work. When the tablet is docked to the keyboard, it doesn't go into a deep sleep, which drains the keyboard battery. Asus does say they will fix it. You need to consider if the keyboard is worth it, over a bluetooth keyboard you could get for the Acer.
The reasons I returned my Transformer was the screen leakage problem, and the fact that the left speaker is noticeably quieter than the right. These are both very common problems. The speaker thing really annoyed me. It wouldn't matter so much if it was just one mono speaker, but with one speaker being quieter, you will actually be missing audio.
I do like the USB slot on the Acer, as well as having a cover for the microSD card. On the Asus, I believe the card sticks out of the tablet, and is easily ejected. The power supply for the Acer is also better. I found the 30 pin connector for the Asus on the bottom to be awkward when trying to use the tablet when charging.
movie playback
Hey guys this thread is helpful, thanks. I was leaning towards the transformer because of some of the video playback issues (not being able to play). The Transformer had no issues playing along side, here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyTXevfSIVk
Fast forward to 07:00
So my question is has this been resolved or is this still an issue?
Thanks guys!
Also, has anyone tried doing the Skype Video Chat? What's the experience/quality like? Will a Bluetooth headset (like a standard Jawbone) work with it? How's the Bluetooth Audio quality (assuming its capable)? I would like to use a wireless headset (stereo).
Thanks again!
The better speakers full usb on the tablet and it looks nice. besides that all the tablets have the same tegra cpu so not like your losing anything performence wise
Had 3 transformers, all with serious light bleed round the edges. Got sick of exchanging it so went for the acer and very glad I did.
Not really anything to choose on the screen, but for me, build quality is better and you have the advantage of full size usb.
On the down side it cost a little more (especially here in rip-off britain), but on the plus side, I ordered the keyboard for the transformer direct from asus when it first came out for 50 quid and sold it on flea-bay for 130 - result
Go to transformer forum and ask the same question.good luck
I have an Acer Iconia a501 and an Asus Transformer TF101 (won with BINGO!) here and put them side by side.
For colors, Asus is my favourite, colors are warmer and colors seems to be more deep and natural; the Acer produces washed out colors in comparison. Green grass on the Asus is light-green (onnatural) grass on the Acer.
The Asus screen is an IPS type and doesn't got the weird honeycomb pattern seen the Acer as bright pixels in sunlight and under certain angles; has something to do with their touchscreen tech in the display.
The Asus' dock with keyboard is a nice gadget but if I looked for this I'll be sticking with my 'old' Asus EeePC I have.
I choose the Iconia in favor of the Asus for these reasons:
- full USB and micro usb support on tablet itself
- hardware rotation lock switch
- 3G model is already on the market (got one!)
- The brushed alu look cover is very nice and sturdy
- back camera with led flash (quite bright!)
- few paid and full games included
Although I won the damn thing, the Asus is going bye-bye... because:
- No USB and micro USB support on tablet itself
- only software rotation lock (3 clicks too many!)
- 3G model is to be expected in August or even September!
- Case is nice to see, but it feels kinda plasticy.
- No flash with camera.
- No including games (even though they're only cost couple of $$)
Asus' screen wins (IMHO) over the Acer screen because it produces warmer colors and has more dedicated colors (262K vs 16M), the Acer uses 'dithering' instead.
But as in many things, you can't twist about someones personal taste.

Hit the nail on the head with that.
I bought the Acer because I had some gift cards to HSN to use up and at the time, they didn't have the transformer. I had considered sending the Acer back now that they have the transformer but the Acer has won me over. I'm not sure I could get by without the USB right on the tablet. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse that are amazingly plug and play. I also have a 3G dongle which also works.
I love to connect the hdmi out to my TV and use the wireless mouse and keyboard to surf the internet, watch movies and play games from across the room.

New Iconia A500 Owner
I just bought an A500 over the Asus for a few reasons.
1) The recent price drop here in the US to $399 along with a $50 gift card from Target stores made the $550 price of the Asus a non starter.
2) I own an Asus laptop and it has had poor build quality and miserable support, so the current issues with power drain on the dock and light bleed made me leery of Asus.
3) The 40-pin power/dock connector makes me really nervous about long term reliability and there aren't any replacements currently available.
Now in fairness to the Transformer, there are some pluses compared to the Acer
Slightly sharper display
nice feel of the back(less slippery)
More USB ports when docked
Longer battery life(when docked)
but I just couldn't justify a $200 delta for the Asus...
I am debating on which to buy. I've been wanting a tablet for awhile now and have slimmed it down to these two options, but would like some feed back if possible.
I'm looking for s-off and root (quickly glancing at the forums, it looks like both are able to achieve this. I like to toy and tinker with things and having a root, with s-off, is a must for this.
Are there any huge differences between the two? I am liking the additional dock available for the Transformer.
Going to post this in the Transformer forum as well. Iconia people, win me over!
The major differences are that the Transformer has that keyboard dock and a slightly better screen, while the Iconia has built-in USB host and slightly better sound.
I personally greatly prefer having the USB host port built into the device rather than in a bulky dock.
ASUS also appears to be doing a slightly better job of providing software updates than is Acer.
I'll be ordering an Iconia on Friday. I have seen both in the flesh and normal use as at work there's 1 guy with an Iconia and 2 with Transformers. The Iconia seems solidly built and no slower than the Transformer on 3.1, and the screens are almost identical. Not to mention the built in USB.
On the other hand both Transformers have been replaced already, one with a strange screen issue that looked like a liquid under the glass when you touched the screen, and one because the case doesn't line up properly - it creaks noticeably if you hold it landscape fashion.
Also I've been buying Acer kit for years (3 laptops and a netbook so far) and the oldest is still going strong after 5 years, no build quality issues in any of the Acer kit i've bought contrary to popular belief, and they've lasted longer than some of the so called premium brands we use at work.
I have a500 and a Transformer so, I think I can answer to your question... If you want my 2 cents opinion, the a500 is way better. I think the screen is more responsive and more brighten. Plus the transformer's screen get incredibly dirty very quickly. The usb thing has no comparison. Just, for example, I bought a cheap silicon keyboard and it works pretty well with the iconia. Same about the mouse. The transformer has just 2 advantages: 1) it's lighter 2) it has a way better microphone. About all the rest it is inferior or equal to the iconia.
If the mic, for you, is a must then buy a Transforemer. If it's not... then buy a a500.
Try both and decide for yourself. You will be happier.
Don't let others do your thinking for you.
If you can, definitely try both as bungaboy suggests, your own preferences may certainly steer you in a different path. In the end it could quite simply come down to something as off-the-cuff as the location of the front-facing camera.
In terms of companies, I currently have an Acer laptop (very happy with) and an Acer monitor (happy with), and have purchased and installed about 6 ASUS motherboards and video cards over time (only 1 less-than-stellar experience with those) so I'd happily recommend either company in general.

Alright. Thanks for all your replies everyone. I am and will decide for myself but since I cannot try out both I was reaching out to the community to give me their pro's and con's so I can weigh them for my own decision.
I'll have to go back to the BX later and play around with the Iconia some more. I didn't really play with the form factor, but what I really like from the Transformer is the keyboard/battery/etc dock. From my understanding it'll be future-compatible too.
why do you like the dock? will you carry with you all the time? if not, pointless. if you want a tab and a keyboard, wait a few more months till the asus eee slide comes out. i got an iconia, and as much as everyone at work bashes me for it, i can do much more than their ipad2

lol, ignorance is bliss, eh? it is a well known fact that the Transformer screen is the second best android tablet screen on the market right now (after Gtab 10.1) while the Iconia screen is far behind.
OP, just go in store and compare the two side by side with the screen set at max brightness. You'll see the big difference especially when viewing from an angle. The Asus blows the Iconia away in this respect.
my 2 cents:
Asus Transformer
-way better screen (most important feature in a tablet, imho)
-a lot lighter then the Iconia (Iconia is the heaviest Android tablet)
-faster updates
-less freezes & runs smoother
-dock option
Acer Iconia
-USB port (the Transformer only has this on the dock)
-better built? allegedly. (my Asus is also very solid but the Iconia metal back feels stronger)
-better sound
-better camera (with flash)
For me it boils down to needing a USB port or not & to wanting the dock option or not.
If you don't need the USB port, then the Transformed is the obvious choice.
If you do (and don't want to spend the extra $150 for the dock) then go for the Acer.
Also if you really want a better screen and the dock option, again the obvious choice is the TF.
good luck & enjoy your new toy either or!
I just purchased the Iconia myself. But from forum postings of people who have bought both and checked them out, it seems people are generally more satisfied with the Transformer (apart from the people who got bleeding screens).
The guy above summed it up pretty well.
I bought both when the Staples coupon came out (Inconia from staples, TF from Office Depot), and kept them sealed in box for a couple of days while I did my research on which one I wanted to keep.
I spent a couple of hours over a few stores comparing and then read a bunch on forums, etc.
There is really no reasonable argument for Acer screen over the Asus. The TF is brighter and displays more colors, this is a fact, not opinion. I also thought things looked slightly sharper on the TF (perhaps it was due to the better contrast). I did not like the one port pulling all duties and its location (understandable as its for the keyboard as well). I have no intention of using a keyboard with any tab that use (I have laptops for that). The TF design appeals to me more, I like it's shape more.
I chose the Iconia over the TF due to the additional ports, better xda dev support and numerous reports of quality controls issues on the TF. Frankly, the last issue was the biggest factor in my decision.
The one complaint I have about the Iconia is the screen. It leaves MUCH to be desired. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the Iconia or with Android tablet screens in general, but you can easily see individual pixels on the screen if you hold the device closer than usual.
Text also is somewhat blurry, not sure if this is an issue with Android text rendering or with Iconia's screen.
Everything else is great though.
Hi, i'm planning to buy an iconia, but i've read on soms sites that the display can only display 265k colors while other devices have 16million.
Is this true? And if so, do you really recognise it if you compare it directly to another device?

Yes Plestiuc, ignorance is a bliss... Even not being able to understand what's written is a bliss... and even attention lack is. If you re-read what I wrote, hoping you're able to focus on all the world and not just on random ones... you will notice I wrote: "If you want my 2 cents opinion". If you do not know the meaning of the word: "Opinion", I do suggest you to go back to elementary school.
Over
even tho the iconia is heavy keep in mind that all of the tablets are to heavy to comfortably hold with one hand for more than 5 min. soo I dont know how much the little wieght difference matters....

In all seriousness, you can't see it. I like the colors on both tablets, and the screen on the transformer is superb. But when I play a movie (the guy at the store let me try a video on the display transformer) I don't notice a difference. The black on the TF is a bit darker, and that's about it.
I didn't think that a built in USB was going to matter to me, but I am actually using it a TON. Thank you so much ACER!
tl;dr Tell me anything you can about the Eee Pad Slider because I want one.
So I'm in the market for a new tablet and I am favoring the Slider over the TF101 and TF300 basically because I like the form factor. However, I have a couple of concerns, so hopefully a few Slider owners still browse the threads here.
For anyone who has the white color model, do you ever get discolorations anywhere on the Tablet? Looking on ebay, it seems like every other white Slider has yellow/brown marks from something... dirty hands, I don't know.
I've never had a Tegra based device so I really don't know what I'm getting into. For anyone who has compared a Tegra 2 and 3 device, is there really any noticeable difference? I don't plan to do much hardcore gaming, just mainly for browsing, light reading, and typing.
Do any Slider owners out there wish they would have gone with a different device, especially a different Eee Pad? If so, why?
I was really looking forward forward to Asus bringing out the MeMO 370T and I will probably refuse to buy a watered down Google Nexus Tablet, I'll still be too salty over it.
Feel free to express your thoughts or opinions here, I appreciate any response.
i was also considering the "slider" but the added option of being able to remove the bulk/weight of the keyboard made me purchase the TF101 still a great tablet for everthing you stated but as of now Tegras chipset is getting outdated and you can get a better tablet for a little more buck
elsewhere
Thanks for your input. If I were to be buy a Transformer, I would certainly have they keyboard dock attached at all times, so after considering that would be more money and heavier, that's kind of where I see the Slider having an advantage.
I suppose the big upside to having a Transformer would be the increased battery life with the dock, that's the only thing that I really would end up being jealous of.

I didn't have a problem with the color, I have a white slider, and is... you know, white. I was using stock HC, and now, android revolution HD. The 3D graphics are way better than 2D graphics. I didn't noticed lag in any 3D games, but in launcher, browser and some 2D apps, I noticed some lag.
Another nice thing of slider is that I didn't had to buy a keyboard

Have you tried updating to ICS or flashing a custom ROM? From what I know, Android 3.x was really heavy on devices. I'm wondering if the lighter operating systems sped up performance at all. Or surely CM9. or AOKP would.
Also, has anyone gotten Ubuntu to run on the Slider? I know there was some Ubuntu development on the TF101 and I thought both devices were actually the same.
Ubuntu runs essentially the same way on the slider. Slightly buggier since the kernels don't line up neatly, but it works.
He's running ARHD now, which is stock based ICS
Thanks, Thing O Doom. You seem like a pretty knowledgable member, I'll keep that in mind.
Anyone running on Ubuntu that can attest to how it runs? I'll have to look into the Ubuntu installation. If I could dual boot from microSD or something, I'd go through the roof.
You can DB off of the Sd (See emmc install db thread) but it's abysmally slow unless you have a HS class10 card. Then it's wonderful, I just use internal though x)
It runs very smoothly considering the specs.
Too heavy and thick
For me it is too heavy and thick to be an ultra portable device. This really becomes a problem when playing games where you have tilt the screen like Rip tide. I can play only about 10-15 min, if I hold it up without supporting the tablet on my lap.
But, that is not how I typically use my slider. I put it on my lap or on my desk and play with it there. If the keyboard is slid out the screen is quite thin and easy to hold. The screen is not a perfect angle to use in bed while lying down, but too me its not a major issue.
The lack of a track pad with a keyboard takes some getting use to, but I like that about it. I'm happy with slider but I was knowing the limitations before I bought it.

I do have a Samsung Class 10 card, so I would probably give Ubuntu from SD a shot since I don't see any Android SD ROMS out there.

Thanks a lot for this feedback. I do do quite a bit of ebook reading and browsing and lots of times, I prefer to read in portrait orientation. Can anyone comment on how it feels to hold the Slider in portrait and also for reading?
Another question:
Should I be trying to avoid certain serial numbers to make life easier for me to root/flash ROMS/dualboot?
It's my understanding that B70 and newer aren't able to use NVFlash on the Transformers due to them having the sbk2 bootloader. Does this same idea apply to the Slider?
EDIT: After some looking around a bit more, it looks like the B70+ Sliders are a no go. Shame...I just found a B90 Slider 16GB on eBay brand new open box for $400 shipping included. More than I wanted to spend but the plastic's even still on.
hello all,
my university gives a 400 pounds credit to buy from studentstore.uk i was planning to get a windows 8 tab but they dont stock sony, asus or dell products .i was planning to get a baytrail tablet like dell venue pro 11.with a maximum budget of 600 pounds(400+200).
so my only option is to get an acer w700 with i3,4gb ram 64 gb memory available for 570 pounds.or wait till samsung, lenovo and acer brings in 10-11 inch baytrail tablet.
so do you think its a good idea to get w700 or just wait till others comes with baytrail tablets(any idea when on earth they will launch it ).?
At this late date, what you see (in the MS store) are what'll be available for this Q4.
My suggestion is to ignore the one-device-fits-all PR hype and get two devices: a 12"-13" laptop for productivity, and a separate tablet for portable use. The meat-and-potato work box comes first, obviously. For my college days, I used a 12" IBM Thinkpad X series, which I lugged everywhere. It wasn't light, but it was built like a tank. The bottom line for me wasn't about best speed or battery life, but good old reliability.

Your choice definitely depends on what you plan to do with it. Do you want something that will serve as a PC as well as a tablet, or just a portable typing device, or just for entertainment? I've also heard that those who do computer science/programming degrees, you'll want something a lot more powerful. However, for humanities subjects, i'm sure an i3 will be just fine.
If you ask me, you should never get anything Acer made.

My experience with the acer repair service isn't great, just got my w700 back and it has gained a load of scratches (came back quite dirty as well) and the rubber section on the back which they clearly removed to open it up hasn't been stuck down properly and now comes away from the case.
Also OP you should be aware that Acer support in general is awful, they delete posts on the forums they don't like (mainly people complaining about the terrible support) and there is a throttling issue with the i5 version which they refuse to fix, you should check out the 52 page thread on their forums which has been going on for over a year.

That should be fine. You don't need something very powerful for that. Actually, I only had an Android tablet (Xperia Tablet S) to do that and it handled those kind of tasks fine for me.
PowerPoint you can install on the device anyway so your fine on that front (uni may offer it for free too). Entertainment is up to you. Note taking should be fine, depends on if you are OK with touch keyboards/small keyboards or not, or using a touchscreen to write with (to my knowledge there is no wacom or synaptics stylus, only the bog standard touch screen).

I dont
Since I have an Acer W700 tablet, I would let you know something about the W700. I will compare it mostly with the Surface Pro because its a gold standard for Intel Core tablets
First thing first, W700 lacks the active digitizer. Don't expect writing and drawing to feel like the Surface Pro or Galaxy Note. Its far from it. I use Adonit Jot stylus, it helps a lot compared to other styli or finger input, but still nowhere as good as the Surface Pro.
Second, the battery last like Haswell tablets. This tablet is insane in term of battery life. I mostly get 6-7 hours for my usage. I use this tablets mostly for browsing, downloading, playing casual games, taking notes (OneNote FTW!), watching videos/movies and listening to music. If you look for an Ivy Bridge tablet that last like Haswell tablets, this is the only one.
Third, since I mentioned videos, movies, and music, I would say this tablet has great screen and speaker. The speaker is great for a tablet. If you enable the Dolby enhancement, the speaker will get louder (with some distortion), on par with cheaper multimedia laptops. Definitely better than the Surface Pro. The screen is also better than any tablet screen Ive ever used.
Fourth, it has no great keyboard solution. Unlike the Surface Pro which has options like the Type and Touch cover, the W700 relies on a Bluetooth keyboard or a case with integrated Bluetooth keyboard. Consult the seller first on which version you get. I would recommend the former since the latter is not comfortable (very, very thin), it is nice though. If you are a bit unlucky like me, youll get neither of them. I got a Perixx 804 Bluetooth keyboard for €25, and it works reliably over Bluetooth. This keyboard feels like a keyboard from Acer V5 or most Sony VAIOs (a bit harder than MacBooks)
Fifth, it has WiFi issue. This issue plagues mostly early generation of this tablet, but you might get this as well. On my W700, I have no problem with the disconnection. However, the signal is not as good as other devices. Usually, when the other devices still get 1 bar of signal, the W700 has lost connection.
Sixth, its graphic performance is not as great as how a HD4000 should be. The GPU suffers from bad throttling, making the performance only comparable to HD3000 GPU on most laptops (I tried with i5-2410M)
Overall, this tablet is geared towards entertainment (great screen and speaker) than business/work (no active digitizer and no keyboard solution). This device is great if you want to use one device rather than two (tablet+laptop), but don't expect too much. Since Haswell tablets are just behind the corner, I would suggest you to wait for some affordable Haswell tablets. However, if you cant wait, I would recommend this device over any Atom tablets unless you need an active digitizer.
My W700 is the i5-3317U model with 64 GB of storage. I wish I had the 128 GB model.

Thermal throttling on the i5 model seems very common, yet rare on the i3 model

Thanks a lot , and sorry for the late reply. iam getting a 450 pounds voucher of student store u.k from my uni and i asked them about the keyboard they told that it comes with the dock & keyboard + the case cover with keyboard out of box so i dont need to buy it seperately . also student store u.k dont have much options to choose from so either i need to wait till lenovo and acer comes out with baytrail or haswell 10+ inch tablets as the studentstore dont stock Asus, HP or Dell .
Also another thing i need to know is that whether the weight and thickness of w700 is an issue to use it as a tablet .
I'd wait to purchase a dell. Acer was terrible when I had it. Dell seems more reliable.
I have the i5 version that came with the dock and the keyboard case. Despite being labelled as having an i5-3317 processor on the box, mine says it has a i5-3337 inside. A patch has fixed the throttling issue for me. The tablet is relatively heavy, it gets uncomfortable to hold and use rather quickly. The thickness isn't a problem; it's actually pretty thin. It's fine to use with the keyboard case on the lap though.
I don't mind the keyboard case. It has full width keys, seems sturdy and keeps the whole setup light. The keys don't press down far due to the thinness of it though. I have to say I like keyboard docks more after using the Asus Transformer TF101, but that would mean adding weight to balance the tablet.
Changing the SSD inside is a bit challenging, but it's possible. It uses a standard mSATA interface according to those who've replaced it. The omission of a SD/microSD slot is a bit strange, but I'd say it has enough storage for most people.
I haven't had any issues with the Wi-Fi, although it seems many others are having trouble with it.
The recovery is on a couple of DVDs. If anything goes awry, you may need to get an external DVD drive. Windows 8 does have the refresh option, which makes things easier if Windows is the problem.
The cameras on the device work alright. Pictures taken look rather poor quality, but I find these things tend to be that way. I really don't know why they put a back facing camera on this thing; I think people using their iPads to take pictures is bad enough. I haven't used it for video chatting yet. Some have reported that the microphone isn't great. The mic is on the bottom edge, which might have something to do with it, but I haven't used it yet.
I enjoy having this tablet. It's as powerful as a laptop and it's fast.
