ET4G.... - Epic 4G General

Ok, I've been bac and forth between getting this or just waiting it out until something wit a Hardware KB comes about, but I recently went to the Sprint store and played wit this phone I must say THIS PHONE IS REALLY NICE! Onscreen keyboard isn't all that bad, but the price made me put it bac down. Didn't talk to a Sprint Rep about it jst thought id see what my XDA family thought first. I got a partial upgrade pending and my full isn't until next June, was online and my final price was like $474 I was thinkin since I was a Premier customer I would get some kinda deal. Anybody kno how I could drop that price a little....or a lot lol!

If you can get it, go for it. I was one of those people who said I would never get a non keyboard phone and I love it. I put Better Keyboard on it instead but I can actually type as fast or faster than I can on this phone now. There will always be a better phone coming out but if you are happy with your Epic after a year, and you will be happy with the ET4G for a long time.

if your upgrade eligible go for it, otherwise its not worth going broke over there's gonna be a gsIII with possibly a pentacore kal el processor in one year (that's what I'm waiting for) hopefully there will be a kb version
Sent from my spare Droid since my epic got jacked. PM me if you want to sell yours.

I'll be waiting until my 2 year is up for something even more Epic to come out ;D
Maybe something like this!

The phone looks nice on paper, but I just can't get myself to buy another Samsung-supported phone. Software updates shouldn't take 9 friggin months to come out.
I'll probably buy the Nexus Prime.
Also, TouchWiz doesn't run a standard bluetooth stack, so you can't do cool things like the PS3 controller for emulator love.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2377...a_ps3_controller_with_your_android_phone.html
The only way I wouldn't get the Prime is if it's super locked-down.

Nothings ever sure until it comes out.

I just switched from the epic to the Epic 4g touch, and I'm telling you, this new phone is amaaaaaaaaaazing. Its 100% worth the upgrade so far. Its just so fast, the gps works perfectly, battery life is way better, I don't have a single complaint about this phone so far...
for the hardware keyboard, when I had my Epic, I used it maybe 4 times ever. This phone is big enough where you don't need the physical keyboard at all, but its still not so big that its not manageable. It still easily fits in my pocket, and is easy to hold on a phone call/texting (i just had a 1 hour phone call) especially b/c its so thin!
Anyways, I highly recommend all of you to take a look @ sprint and play with it!

I ditched the epic.

This is not a bash thread. I owned the epic for roughly 4 months. It is a very good phone. Reason I dropped it was due to it felt cheap. The phone was pretty loose concerning the slider. Also I never used the keyboard. The amoled screen is nice but I needed a bigger screen. So I switched to the evo. And from what I can tell during normal everyday use is that its just as fast. I don't game and I know the epic is better for gaming. I still think the epic is a damn good phone. Just sharing my experience. Also even with gps turned on so far the battery life on the evo is a little bit better. It does not get hot during web browsing like the epic did.
Im still here though. Been here since the epic launched and still glad to try to help other if they need it.

My only complaint with Samsung is the software. They make awesome hardware, though. I think they do it on purpose because if they matched a software engineer to eke out everything from the hardware, you wouldn't really care about buying a new phone so much.
Even though Samsung sucks at supporting their Products, it'll be hard to go to any inferior screen.

Not sure how you can get better battery life on a stock EVO. The hardware in the Epic is simply more power efficient than the EVO, it's a fact.

Love the epic...agree the slider mech sux....
Ive never seen a problem with the sliding mech. Matter a fact I also have a moment and the intercept and those mechs are fine as well. I don't see how they're bad.
Anyway At this point jumping to the Evo isn't a bad idea at all if you want to. All of this "Epic is just a better machine" means squat when it's not even updated with an official Froyo yet. It's like having the most advanced yatch in a desert.
I for one love my epic but the second something esle comes along. I think i'll be leaving myself. Unless the device that comes along is also made by samsung. Then no thanks.

Well stock 2.2 battery life so far is great. Stock for stock there pretty close honestly. The epics display eats a ton of battery.
Also another thing I am noticing. On the epic I used roam control due to no sprint signal at work. If I left it on automatic the epic would lose signal, the radio would then reset itself 2 times before it would go to roam. So I used roam control to just roam only. On the evo it seemlessly switches between home and roam without completely losing the radio.

No it doesn't. Its actually much more efficient than the Evo's.

Agreed. The Tegra 2 LG Optimus looks pretty appealing, if it gets the advertised battery life. Wonder if it'll come out for Sprint.
That said, I do play some Super Mario now & then on the Epic. The keyboard + Game Gripper is nice for that. I can't do the screen controls, too slow.
I love the Epic to death, but Samsung support sucks.
To the person mentioning switching ... HTC shift.
I know a few buddies who went from the epic to the Evo. Both good devices. Sprint kind of limited.

Evos a great phone. I had both the epic and the evo, switched back and forth for awhile before deciding in the Epic. The epic IMO is quicker, but the development on the Evo may have changed that by now, idk. I will say that my evo always had better battery life than my epic. Same apps and same usage, both with the Evo on 2.1 and 2.2. Battery isnt a big deal to me personally tho since I always keep a spare battery. Enjoy your Evo. I personally miss the development compared to the epic, but im hopeful that that will changer soon. If you end up not liking it, sell it. I sold mine for twice what I paid. My wife just sold her second evo for $550 cash off craigslist.

I've had a person on Craigslist practically begging me to switch his 1 month old Evo, for my epic. I have been really torn between what to do. I really like this phone, and it is only gonna get better when 2.2 offically releases and the source code drops. I think I would regret it if I traded and it turned out the epic is being pushed beyond what any other phone has done before performance wise with the release of the source. T-mobile just got their release for 2.2 today, so hopefully we are not far behind (ya I know, we are on CDMA).
Whoa.... Vibrant got an official update? I didn't see anything on those forums...

The epic is my first samsung. I always have HTC from the ppc 6700 to the evo. I switched from the evo. Even tho I do agree the epic feel's cheap, but it does have better hardware than the evo.
Deal breaker for me was the camera, I was Surprised how crappy the evo was to take pic's, but at least the epic sux's less, it's actually pretty good.
Development is slower, but it's still gets plenty of love. I for one don't plan on flashing every other day.

If its the release that I think your speaking of. It was for T-Mobile (UK) not T-Mobile (USA). I thought the same thing once I read about it, but read more and its for the UK.
I have both the Epic and the EVO. I love both phones, but I like the EVO a bit better. I'm sure my reasoning is totally different from others (as expected). I would love to compare the two with 2.2, but for obvious reason I cannot. I'm VERY tempted on rooting my Epic finally. Battery life (for me, as I cant speak for others) have been great on both. But again, everyone has their different uses on their phones.
Well imop, I wouldn't of down graded... When they come out with a better phone damn near every 6 months. I would've stuck with the Epic till something better came out ( like the dual processor ) thats coming... But if you got-it like that just to buy 500 dollar phones because it feel cheesy ( And I agree ) then you made the right decison...

In my opinion, I think the Epic is a great phone, the only complaint I would make is the battery life. Then again I use my phone constantly and run many tasks at the same time, but I'm sure emulators don't help either lol. As for the slider, that made all the difference when debating on buying an epic or evo. Even if it is a little loose the qwerty is almost perfectly spaced and is probably the best one i have used on any phone (and I have gone through a lot). As for the software we all knew that Samsung sucked at providing it, but thanks to hard working people there are plenty of ways to get the newest android versions through ROMs which don't take too much work to use.
Personally I don't plan on changing my epic until it can no longer support newer android versions, but that's just me
Here is the link, 1 of out of 2 I saw today for T mobile customers getting Froyo for their Galaxy S phones.

If anyone cares

Was checking the best buy website today and the Sprint Nexus S phone now has an add to cart button.
When processing the purchase it gives an Estimated Arrival: 04/18-04/21/2011
I opened a chat with a best buy rep and was told:
you : Is a release date available?
Tech: The date is on 4/18/2011
Just an FYI for those who care.
I just chatted with a Bestbuy rep and she said that if anyone pre-orders it and is with a different carrier they will be eligible for the $125 rebate that Sprint is offering if it is done before the 16th.
We're getting dual core's this summer, you're better off sticking with the Epic. The nexus s 4g is the exact same, except for it's running gb and has an NFC chip.
Yeah of rather have the epic over the nexus s

I'm holding out for CM7 on my Epic. I'm happy with the Epic for now. It has everything I need and some things I don't (keyboard). I'm not really looking to get back into Samsung unless it is a Nexus because its pure google. My girl wants one so will get one for her and get rid of her Epic, but as for me I agree about holding out for later this year.
Epic 4g> Nexus s 4g
only benefit is that its pure google and that chip oh and gingerbread
but i like my epic hardware keyboard better then those things
im happy with froyo and besides if people do but this phone it may make it easier to port new Android versions and stuff like 4g working on CM7 and what not.

too me, i think the epic has some of the best hardware and is the only top of the line phone with the hardware kb and for a keyboard phone i think it is so sexy and thin
compared to the moment, the tp2 tp1, i think a lot more people like having that keyboard, all my friends that have galaxy s variants hate me cause i have the hardware keyboard.
but your right it is a preference
mind telling me why you didnt get the evo if you like thin phones?
was it the screen and the hardware on the epic?

I did have the Evo originally and it's still sitting in my drawer in the event I need a backup phone.
I switched for 3 Reasons.
The extremely poor GPU in the Evo.
It's weight vs. the Epic (or any SGS)
The direction HTC is going in.

i will be picking up my nexus 4g the day it comes out, why? i am going to be stuck in a contract for 2 years with it. there is no doubts in my mind, the sgx540 in the SGS lineup is hands down the best phone gpu on the market (check glbenckmark.com) in terms of overall benchmark gpu scores the nexus s is 4 slots down from the ipad 2 (you know that new dual core tablet thats been crushing everything in terms of speed) so as far as i see it i have a choice between the epic or the ns4g. the epic is a decent enough phone. i love hard ware keyboards, but i want upgrades for 2 years... ask anyone on the nexus forums if they regret getting a nexus device. im willing to bet 99.9 of them will tell you they love having 2.3.3
i couldnt care at all about nfc (yay non scannable qr codes... woopie..) but its more about the simple things. i very rarely run any stock rom, most of the time is cyanogenmod, i congratulate the devs on trying so hard to bring it to the epic but its still got a bit to go. i guarantee the nexus s 4g will have an official repo/build within a week of cm7.
now whats the worst part about nexus s 4g? the camcorder.. its locked at 480p due to hardware limitations, but i can get over that as i dont use my phone as a video camera. no sd card slot? nah ive owned cell phones before they used microsd, and i own an ipod.. so im kinda used to the whole concept of being stuck with a size, besides refer to above point.. no video means less space taken up by media. no i would have to say the worst part about getting a nexus s 4g is knowing that with gb out and hc being held off for tablets only.. that ice cream is a bit off and that means its gunna be a bit of a wait for me to get my next dose of android medicine.
P.S i know i cant be the only one hoping that moto gets skipped on the next nexus device and lg gets it
For those who are interested, I just got a 10% off coupon in the email from Best Buy. That means a 10% discount on preorders of. Nexxus S

I have this dumb habit of getting the cooler (in MY opinion) and more unique thing when I have a choice between it and something a little less cool but better supported. I own a Zune instead of an iPod, a Mazdaspeed3 instead of a WRX, I used to have an HPI RC car instead of an Associated RC-* that was gas powered instead of electric, and an Epic instead of an Evo, etc.
On one hand, I have never once wanted to kick the phone across the parking lot like I did with the Hero, but on the other hand, the Evo has more accessories that can be bought in brick and mortar stores, more custom ROMs including a more functional CM (much love, you guys really picked a whore of a phone to port to) and more fully functioning root apps.
I know in my heart that if I did get the Evo, I'd be kicking myself for not getting the far more powerful Epic. In this upgrade cycle I think I made the right decision to give Samsung another chance. I still don't trust them to the level of HTC (started with them back in the Titan days) but if they can make a hot-rod Google Experience phone then I'm definitely on board.
If anyone cares.

That new EVO looks pretty sweet. I think I'm going to hold out for it. And for those of you that get your phones from Best Buy, you are better off going to a Sprint Store.

[Q] Would you still buy a Samsung Epic 4G?

My wife due for a new phone. She has a HTC Touch Pro 2 now.
Would you still buy a Samsung Epic 4G or wait for something else? Here's the hitch, she loves the keyboard so... she wants a phone with a keyboard.
I've read the HTC EVO shift is not that great and the screen is smaller. That's why I was leaning toward the Epic 4G
Any suggestions would help. I know the Epic 4G is getting old and don't want her to get stuck with an older phone if a newer, better one is coming out soon.
p.s. Android phones only please. (I don't see Windows making it!)
The only thing better is the dual core, but then you get to go through all the development cycle again. Depends on whether you want stability or raw fracking power tech.

Thanks!
She will be keeping the phone with the stock rom.
I think it will be fast enough for her. She just uses it for internet, youtube, texting, emails. Nothing too major.
Yes if it for an everyday user it the perfect phone! Beautiful screen and super fast for an everyday user!

I would hold off and wait, the new phones are coming soon. You might find something you like better, if not then you could always get the epic then for less probably.

Well, if you want her to be involved in the latest tech, I'd wait a bit until there's a phone that's dual-core and has a keyboard. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything coming soon like that, so it's your choice.
For her basic uses and stuff, she might want to wait only because the keyboard on this phone is a bit laggy in its current state.
If she's okay with that, then buy an Epic It's still a great phone.
Yea as long as she doesn't mind a little wobble here and there on her phone...
i personally would just get the nexus! its a google phone so you know it will be supported by devs and google themselves
edit: nvm i didnt see the part that said she likes the keyboard
just go with the epic
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Absolutely! I've loved my device and I'm itching for my new one. Developing on it has been rewarding, and all the missed sleep has been worth it.
I went from the tp2 to the Epic and I don't how to say it in nice words. I had the tp2 for 1 1/2 years and if I had know how good android was compared to winmo 6.5 I would have thrown that thing in a lake. Going to the epic felt like going from a 486 dx2-66 to a quad core computer. IMOP the tp2 was the worst touch phone I have ever owned. If she is like my wife and just wants a nice phone that works and no modding then I would get the epic now. Everything on it is allmost instant when touched and I have not had any keyboard issues at all.
My epic is stock rom and rooted no custom roms. have had it for 6 months and only locked up twice so far where I had to pull the battery.

The keyboard has issues with skipping letters, which makes it very difficult to type fast on, and there's a slight wobble when open (nothing drastic).
I would definitely factor in software support too, which is severely lacking with the Epic 4G. You have to consider all the bug/security/critical fixes that are a significant part of the updates. I, personally, have been having software issues from the DK28 leak to EC05, Eclair was the only one that was every completely stable for me.
for 19.99 hell yea.
i love my epic, but ive recently played around with a mytouch 4g and that thing is blazing quick and snappy. everyone here says the epic is the quickest and best non dual-core phone (and i trust them since they know more than me), but i feel that phone is more responsive. it's stock and so is mine. its running adw like my epic. why do you guys think the mytouch runs much smoother?
What kind of software problems do you have? I have seen very little on my end. Confuses me on xda where some say there are a lot of problems and some have very few to all most no problems. I type very fast on my keyboard and it never skips a beat.

Especially now that it comes with Froyo, an Epic is a no-brainer for these prices. I paid many times more and coming from an original Touch Pro, it was like going from a Dodge Dart hooptie to a Lamborghini.

Are you sure it comes with Froyo? I'm helping someone pick out a phone, and this person, like the OP's wife, will be using it completely stock and unrooted. I can't find the details on sprint.com either way, but Best Buy and Radio Shack both say 2.1 in their specs about the phone. I heard there were problems with the updates, so I'm not sure at all that it comes with 2.2, and that's a real consideration for someone who will be running this stock, I think.

I can only go by what I saw in a local Sprint store. I would hope that they would have all their stock replaced with 2.2 versions out of the box, but even if they don't, a stock 2.1 phone should receive the 2.2 upgrade over the air fairly quick. I'd just advise trying to get it updated before installing much else on it. The latest Froyo is as official as it gets and is pushed everywhere to phones which can receive it, AFAIK.
i also came from a touch pro 2 and i was amazed how good the EPIC was I think it's a great phone. Plus radiosack.com has the epic for $19.99 with a new contract and $49 upgrade. That's a steal. I like the phone so much(and hated att service so much) the price drop doesn't even bother me. The last 6 months was worth the launch price.

Oh my, thanks for that. We can't pass that up (totally new contract). If it doesn't have 2.2, I'll just go ahead and root it and put Syndicate on it.
With regard to the question the OP asked, I suppose my answer is that, yes, I would buy another Epic, at least right now. I've looked around at what Sprint currently has, and there's nothing I'd rather have than the Epic. The keyboard doesn't mean as much to me as I thought it would, but I'd still prefer the Epic to the Evo. I'm not sure the upcoming Nexus S is much better than the Epic. Now, once the Evo 3D comes out, that might be something to look at, but that's months away. I have no plans or desires to switch phones, but have been looking a lot to help someone else, and I'm glad that I discovered that the Epic is still the phone to get if you're tied to Sprint (company discount).

If the keyboard doesn't mean that much to you, you might as well wait little over a week for the nexus, for the better form factor alone. I guess you're weighing price vs size & software support, all other things being almost equal.

witch is better? evo or epic?

ok so here the deal. i might get a evo, but im not sure if it will be better in anyway then my epic. now i want to get a evo 3d but dont have the cash. so my question is, should i get a evo or just stick with my epic? they both are about the same spec wise but that doesnt mean one isnt faster than the other. any ideas? now i would be keeping my epic incase i dont like the evo but i dont want to get it and wast my money.
thanks =)

Yeah, I'd have to say you should save money and keep your Epic. You're able to make phone calls and do the already important things you need a phone for. So save up man.

What would be the advantage of getting the Evo if you already have the Epic and it's working?
Both phones are great, but I prefer the screen on the Epic, so I'd stick with it. Especially since it will save you money.
im just board of my phone, thats the only reason. and my keyboad is litteraly starting to fall apart. my space key is in 3 peices, superglued on. no lie
Evo all they way!!!
Obviously I am kidding. Keep the Epic and save the money.

I'd wait for a new device that is better than what you currently have. Otherwise you're making a lateral move.
If your eligible for upgrade, amazon has all sprint phones on sale for a penny until midnight tonite. (Nov 28th)
Including the evo 3d.

i probably am, but my dad (family plan) NEVER resigns contracts....haha like never. we had verizon for like 8years, with out ever resigning a contract....lol
ok well thanks guys for all your input, ill just keep looking for a evo 3d on craigslist haha =) maybe one will be in my price range soon.
There's an Evo 3D in the market place for $200 in really good shape. Its a steal for that cost but the seller is only offering it at that price for today.

If you had neither phone, the answer would likely be easy: get the Evo (even if it were simply the Evo 4G -- and not the 3D -- we were talking about it would be the better choice given the heavy handful of unnecessary complications the Epic 4G comes along with like GPS, accelerometer quirkiness and lagging CM support [not to mention lagging manufacturer support]).
Given that you actually already have an Epic 4G, the answer is a little tougher. It would be easy to say: "Try and stick it out for now. The Epic's a decent phone. Load up some lean, optimized ROM's and it may satisfy you for quite a time longer."
Sure that would be easy for me to say, but it also comes from the view of subsidized phone buyer that isn't used to giving $200 and not receiving a top-2 tier phone. But wait, what are we talking about?? "they both are about the same spec wise" is way FALSE...
The Evo 3D is a top-2 phone on the Sprint network (it should have twice the potential processing power of the Epic 4G, does have twice the RAM [which, btw, I would expect to be the solution for the majority of any slowdowns you may be experiencing with your Epic], and if we are to continue to distinguish their specs... it also has 35% more screen real-estate, resolution-wise [if that matters to ya]). If you can indeed buy it contract-less for the same price everyone else typically pays for a top-tier-er on-contract: just buy the darned thing.
Disclaimer: I have never used, nor completely read any reviews on, and do not explicitly 'follow' the happenings of the Evo 3D. The above recommendations are based on solid common sense, but should not be confused to include personal experience with the device.
I own both and I have to say that the epic is WAY faster even when the evo is on an AOSP rom. Also, the epic screen is way better...

Keep the epic. By the way, why would you want an Evo 3D? The hardware is almost dated by now, and it'll definitely be out-of-date in the coming months with quad-core. Also, if you've played with the Epic 4G touch, then it'll blow you away. It is way smoother than the Evo 3D, and the battery life is much better. The Evo 3D's battery isn't awful, but with medium usage, you'll barely survive a day.
If you're looking toward a new phone, wait a bit for quad-core. Dual core is gonna be left in the dust once quad-core comes out, and it's not that far away. Note that quad-core will greatly improve battery life, performance, and more since ICS has hardware acceleration optimized for it.
That being said, I wouldn't get a Galaxy Nexus either. Nexus phones are great, but that's only because they release the latest & greatest android version. To be honest, the galaxy nexus doesn't even stand a chance against the GS2, but it definitely kills an Evo 3D.
Hope this opened your choices up a bit, rather than to focus on an almost 6-month old phone
Keyboard is a double edged sword. I got the epic for my wife and I because she wanted a keyboard and this would be my first android phone so I wanted us to have the same. The keyboard itself is great as far as keyboards go but moving parts always break eventually. The evo would last much longer than the epic I am sure. If you get new phones regularly its no big deal but if you stick with one for a long time the candy bar format sans keyboard would be the most reliable.

get insurance on that beast and get it fixed!
Besides, most people leave the Epic for the Nexus S 4g, not the EVO.
I'd wait for the LTE phones if you already have an Epic.

I've been using the Epic since February, bought it because of the beautiful screen. I don't think I've used the slide out keyboard more than 3 times. It was nice to know I had it if I needed it but I'm now convinced I can do without one.
Eepppiiiiccccc!!!!!!!!!!! The evo sucks
Battery is terribleee
And its slower than this
And it doesn't have a cool widget button set in the notifications
And doesn't have a beautiful clear screen like this phone lol
And nooooo keyboardd so touch can get annoying sometimes especially when sometimes u get a drop of water on the screen (which winter is coming so be expecting a lot of rain) and in the cold the touch won't respond to ur frozen fingers lol
That's just what I think and I can give u a lot more reasons if u want
Like rooting the epic and having cwm and roms is easier on epic and u won't have all the amazing devs that u will have over here lol
This is all just my opinions

[Q] What phone are you looking forward to getting next?

I was planning on getting the Galaxy Nexus once it becomes available on Sprint, but after realizing it has no SD slot I've changed my mind. For some that may not be an issue, but I like using my phone as a MP3 player and really don't want to purchase a separate device for that. The Galaxy Note looks promising, but that could be even further down the road and it is a little too big for my tastes. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Since I am not getting a new phone until July, the phone I am getting isn't out yet. If no keyboard quad core LTE is in the pike then the Galaxy Journal is looking good.
Well...considering how horrible my credit score is .... and sprint is the only company that will even CONSIDER re-newing my contact, ill probably be going with EVO 3D or Galaxy S2. I am proud to say I STILL have never owned an iphone and dont plan on doing so any time soon.
However, I must say CM9 has opened my epic up to a whole new world of pant creamage, so i'll probably be sticking with my epic for awhile.

I have myself an Epic and I I am quite content with it in it's rooted state. I would imagine the S2 rooted would make for a beast of a phone. Everyone is always looking to get the next best thing, but realistically how powerful does your phone really need to be?

I agree, it's already like a brand new phone. Although, I've never quite liked how bulky the phone is, especially with a case on it. The epic 4g touch is a pretty sexy phone to hold on to. But I don't see myself changing phones anytime soon with CM9 as good as it is, and keeps getting better.
I really want the Galaxy Nexus but I am happy with my Epic for now. Depending on if I get a decent job after I graduate in may and if the company has good phone discounts ill probably try to get one on sprint. If not ill probably try to buy one with a bad esn and flash to virgin mobile. I don't have to have 4g and could definitely live without it for $25 a month.
my upgrade isn't until august, although at the moment i plan to get the galaxy nexus.
But there is a lot of time left for me to change my mind.

Get the Audio Galaxy app free from the market, and you never have to put mp3s on your phone again. As long as your computer is on, you just stream them right to your phone from your computer's hard drive where ever you go.

With all the recent goodies we have received for our EPIC4G , I'm waiting until later in the year when something REALLY better comes around ( even though I am already eligible for an upgrade on one of my lines )
Something with LTE
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
Nothing. There is not a single phone on the market or even in the pipeline that I am aware of that I look forward to purchasing to replace my Epic. Except maybe another Epic if this one breaks. My next phone MUST have a physical slide-out keyboard, as well as LTE, multi-core, and unlocked bootloader. I will ditch Sprint for Verizon if I have to, but even the Droid 4 fails to meet my requirements because Motorola has their head up their *** and locks the bootloader on everything. I am very disappointed but hopefully Samsung or HTC will surprise me with a qwerty superphone. Otherwise the Epic will be my phone of choice for the next few years.
I'm actually still pretty happy with my phone as others are here, but I will actually NOT be getting a physical keyboard on my next phone. I thought it was a necessity, but I have fallen in love with SwiftKey, and I don't see a need for a physical keyboard anymore.
I would much rather have a slimmer form factor. However I'm guessing the only requirement my next phone will have is LTE.
My contract is already up and i was planning on getting the Galaxy Nexus when it came out for Sprint, but that was before our awesome devs managed to get CM9 on our epics. Now i am patiently waiting for the next nexus phone
CM9 really did bring new life to the Epic, Im completely satisfied with it now.

I actually dislike slimmer phones. They don't feel right in my hand and are usually slippery also. I always cringe when the phone slips out of my hand and smashes open on the concrete. I think the Epic with a standard battery is already slim and light enough and I wouldn't want anything slimmer. I would MUCH prefer the heavy metallic feel of an HTC phone (like the G2), but HTC doesn't make any decent qwerty phones like that anymore.
I agree with most of you guys, as long as we keep getting CM9 updates I have no problem sticking with the epic for another year.

I've had an upgrade for a little over a year now, on my line. Haven't moved from the Epic as nothing has really offered a significant upgrade. My next phone? LTE without question (but it needs to be in Chicago as the 3G speeds here are atrocious), made by either Samsung or HTC, though I'd have a tough time moving from Samsung. Outside of that, no real requirements. I'd like 2GB of RAM, but that might be 2013, who knows. I think unlocked bootloader goes without question as there is no way I could go stock anything after having an Epic...

That's great and all, but doesn't help when I'm not in good service areas. In my line of work, I'm in very spotty areas all the time and I need my phone's network to not be cluttered up so I can receive business calls/txts reliably.
