Side Loading? - Thrive General

Hello,
Kind of a newb, I'm going to be purchasing a Thrive, and I want to install an app that isn't approved for the device yet. Its called Navionics, its a marine charting application. I've read other forums and someone said they extracted the APK and side loaded on to the device and it worked great.
Now to the question, how do you do that?
Thanks in advance.

You have to download it with a device that is approved and copy it off. The only other way is if someone will provide it to you.

Ok, so I can download it to my vibrant, move it to the sd card, load the card in the thrive then launch it?

When you select it, you you get a dialogue that says install. Install it and it should be added to your apps.

Also, downloads for Dexter's mods have historically been buggy for many users. The file you download (through 1.3) should be around 100MB. The exact size varies between versions. If the above suggestions don't work for you, try downloading the file again.
If you still have issues with the downloaded file, other users have found download success by using a browser download plugin called flashgot. It only works with Firefox and Thunderbird though.
http://flashgot.net/
I had an issue with the download with similar results to yours. My download was only about 63K whem it should of been a little over 100MB.
I had to start down loading the 1.2 update, that would start to download the whole 1.2 file. I'd cancel the download then download 1.3. For some reason after that it downloaded the complete 1.3 update file and I was able do the update.
So, check your downloaded file size and see if that's you issue. Also make sure you rename it Update with a capitol "U".
how long does the download take? i followed the instructions and my screen went to a picture of an android? and a box and stayed that way.

Did you boot into recovery (1. by turning off the unit, then power it on by holding the power button for a second, release, and then hold again until the recovery menu pops up), or did you use the settings menu to run the Update file (2. Open Settings > About device > System updates > Update device)?
If you did option 1, the soft keys on the side of the tablet allow you to navigate from the image you reference (android robot & box):
Search Key = Up
Back Key = Down
Home Key = Menu
Menu Key = Select
When you see the robot, press the Home key to take you to the update menu. Navigate the menu to clear your cache. After the cache wipe is complete, select the option to install Update.zip. Give it about 10min to run through the update, and it should reboot. If it reboots into an Elocity Logo loop, long press the power key until it shuts down. Your next boot should take you into a properly functioning tablet. Depending on the version of the OS you currently have installed, the update may retain your current apps and settings.
I haven't tried option 2 in a while, but it should do everything for you automatically - but it will probably factory reset the tablet and you'll lose any previously installed apps.
thanks. Did not know this when i posted found out byaccident when wipinfg off fingerprints. Wish they sent directions with the A7.

if you have not solved your issue I believe I had simular problem. the file when you download is already a .zip file. So when you rename it just rename it "Update"
Another newbie here with a question.
My new A7 is due to be delivered tomorrow.
From what I have gathered so far from this board is that the Dexter Mod allows you to get apps from google marketplace, correct?
I am not sure which version of firmware will come on the A7 but I am going to assume that it will not be the latest one released in February.
My question is should I do the firmware update first, and then download and install the Dexter Mod?
Thanks in advance.

Dexter's mods have all been based on firmware updates from Elocity. He has kindly added market functionality and fixed a few bugs. I don't see any value in updating with Elocity's firmware prior to installing Dexter's latest.
As the other poster said there is no need for the elocity 7 update but if I were youI would keep it handy. I had a problem with the mod and had to reset the device with the old firmware. Also it seems a weird problem with android reading the file as when reading in astro the upddate.zip looked like update.zip.zip. w
Wierd.
So you just write update i dont even capitalize it.
Also want to add as newbie to andrid as well and it makes a huge difference in performance too. Think it is fast now when you put the mod it seemed to increase overall performance for me which I did not expect.
Good luck

That is not an android problem. That is what happens when windows explorer is set to hide known file extensions and people dont think when remaming things.
Please do not insult people because we lack knowledge which is why we are here to figure out what is going on. I had no idea windows explorer was set to hide file extensions. I never set it that way nor was i ever told before now. So it is not OK for me to point out an obvious mistake (seriously, this one is like calling grass purple). BUT it is perfectly fine for you to assume that it is a "problem with android" and disseminate misinformation like its your job.
Yup, I am obviously in the wrong.
It is obvious to you. I made a mistake and never said I was an expert and pointed that out in my response by saying I was a newbie too and this was what happened to me and my best guess was what I said. I never said I knew it was an andriod glitch but because I had no other idea until someone like you with more knowledge chimmed in.
All I am saying is you could have corrected me as a newbie with a sense of friendship and not superiority. I was sharing my experience to help someone else. That is all I want to do. I am no expert and am learning as I go.
I have seen others in linux forums when i started with that with the tone. Maybe it seems like thecolor of grass to you but is not so obvious to others. If I sounded like I was telling people mis information then I apologize. That was not my intention.
It is up to you how you treat others and if it feels like the right thing then that is your right. Just understand that some of us are not out to show we are smarter than anyone else and are just trying to help even when we make wrong assumptions.
Thanks for correcting me and setting the record straight.

[Q] eLocity a7

After installing dexter's 1.3 mod, i still do not see market....I know mod works because of sound volume change...I checked sd card on tablet and it shows update.zip.zip but on laptop card reads update.zip only...is that where the problem lies? I'm not sure where i should be finding the market app...or , is there something else I should do?
Here.

Edit: BTW, there was no volume change, the mod didn't install.

Not quite. If you do that on any of my workstations or laptops you will end up with a file
named just 'Update.'
It all depends on the settings you have in Windows File Manager.
If a user is going to be dealing with file extensions then the feature that is set to
'Hide File Extensions' needs to be disabled, Hence the link to the post on how to do that.
The instructions in the posting do not need clarification, File Manager needs tweaking
and that is how it needs to be configured to eliminate confusion.
It's rough that MS still realies on file extensions. And then when users are trying to do
something that requires that detail it gets confusing.

Are you serious? Get off the cheap drugs, the expensive ones won't $#% you up so bad.
I think you are actually the one that started me on that rant that I linked (that went into enough detail that it described, and gave instructions on how to fix people's common issues from TWO OPERATING SYSTEMS!) You keep telling people "just name it update" you are wrong, dead wrong. the file NEEDS to be update.zip and your generalization will only cause issues for people that wouldn't have had them otherwise... So it looks like you are the one that posts instructions that need clarification.
I posted the link because it had already been answered, I am not going to type until I am blue in the face just because some people don't have the gift of search.

1) Install elocitymod 1.3 on your A7 (install instructions are at the beginning of the thread for it in the A7 Development section)
2) Wait on the bluetooth fix to see if you have any problems (I am running without the BT fix and running fine, others have issues and the BT fix helps them out)
3) If you don't want to pay Sprint $30 extra a month you are going to have to root the EVO
3a) Use unrevoked3 (quick google search)
I would recommend doing it from a Mac just because it is easier, PC you have to install drivers.
3b) Once the EVO is rooted, install "Wireless Tether" from the Market (on the EVO)
4) Profit.
This is pretty much my setup and I love it. I have done other modifications to my A7 and my EVO, but nothing that would alter this.
Help Please
Thank you so much for your reply, sincerely appreciate it. Be patient with me, new to this stuff. I downloaded the mod and tried to install, with no luck. It downloaded five different files, which one should be renamed to update or update.zip? Downloaded pda.net on the evo and on the laptop and it worked fine. Just wasn't sure what to download for the A7 to make it work. Thanks again and have a great day.

the file ElocityModv13.zip should be update.zip
Make sure Hide extensions for known file types is OFF in Windows.
I'm starting to suspect that the micro card reader in the A7 might just be finicky.
What size and type of Micro SDCard are you using?
Do me a favor and do a 'Properties' on the Dexter Mod file and post back what size is reported.
Try formatting the card this way: -=- LINK -=-

mod on SD Card
I think the ELocity only supports the micro SHDC cards not vanilla micro SD cards. Someone else in another thread had a problem with update.zip and it turned out it was on a vanilla micro SD card and when they used a micro SDHC card it worked.

Order and chaos on Galaxy Note (N7000)

Hey guys,
So I finally got around to getting this mess sorted out with trying to get Order and Chaos working on my Galaxy Note and it runs great once you actually get 'around' the device checking nonsense.
I do actually own an Android Market and a Gameloft Store license for the game as well as have a subscription but unfortunately neither of these files will actually work due to the in-place device checking.
Unfortunately I cannot tell you where to download these files but the following are the two files you need:
- Order-and-Chaos-v1.0.8-approb.com.apk
- GloftMMHM-snapdragon-approb.com.rar
Once you have both of those files you need to copy the Order-and-Chaos-v1.0.8-approb.com.apk file to your phone via whatever method you usually use, then extract the GloftMMHM-snapdragon-approb.com.rar file to your computer, connect your phone to the computer via USB and copy the files you extracted to the following directory:
/Android/data/com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftMMHM
Unfortunately this copy of Order and Chaos will start in non-English mode, you can change this simply by tapping the bottom right button which will open the "Settings" menu. From there, select the bottom option and tap the American flag.
Congratulations! You now have a working copy of Order and Chaos on your Galaxy Note.
I have created a forum thread on the gameloft forums pointing out that this is a major inconvenience and such complex work-arounds should not be necessary to use a game which works perfectly on a device of my choosing for a game I have a license for.
http://forum.gameloft.com/index.php/topic,43433.0.html
Hopefully this helps some of you folks trying to get this working!
Note: The same strategy as outlined above should still work and is reported to work but I have stopped bothering with this game. If a developer can't be bothered to implement a simple fix like this, in an MMORPG no less, they don't deserve my hard earned money. Also, if you can't manage to find the files using Google, keep looking! They're literally insanely easy to find if you just look for the filenames - use your noggin' - don't expect xda-developers to do *everything* for you
Good job!
Developers need to stop this nonsense.
O M G!
It works like a charm... : O Thank you very much for this, have been searching soo much for just THIS
Sweet Jesus im playin, bye
No problem! Yeah I was searching for this like crazy so decided to just bite the bullet and try various things until something worked!
Thanks! Been constantly searching since I got my Note on how to get this game to work. It's unfortunate that "piracy" is the only way to play it for now but hopefully gameloft opens their eyes and makes the proper changes. Like you, I also own two copies on my Android device and also own a copy for my now sold iPhone 4. I have paid for subscription and have not been able to play it since my note doesn't support it. Again thank you for your efforts and I'll see you online hehehe

So you Delete This Folder and then you go back to the SD Root and search for a Gameloft Folder (Right where Android is)
\Gameloft\
If you have it... delete it.. if you dont have. Delete the other Folder, Restart Phone, Plugin Usb and copy the Data THEN
If its not working delete it again, Restart Phone, Copy Data back to phone and download the apk from the side where you downloaded the Files and Start the apk yourself then...
Hope it works out for you

Thanks!!
Thanks a million for the info Chris! Works like a charm
The way I got it working was....when I had my GS2 I backed it up with Titanium Backup and then restore it on Note...works flawless...since it won't appear on Market with Note.
Hi,
Thanks for getting us this amazing game!
I got both the required files and placed in the right path.
Been trying all the delete/restart/load and still can't get it to work on my Note...
Anything else need to be check?

I assume you guys are extracting the RAR file and placing the files in the path specified, right? If so, try downloading the files to see what the directory name created is, then replace the files in that folder with the files you downloaded in the RAR file and relaunch the game.
As for buying game time - no sadly that doesn't work but I'm afraid this was the best I could find and since I already had a month or so left it hasn't been a problem for me (yet.)

[Q] MN5 (More noob English, please)

Just trying to work my way through GMPOWER's tutorial on rooting the Nook Color.
I have some REALLY basic questions that are probably covered in the instructions, but if it's NEW, which it is for anyone reading here...it's confusing:
For example,
1. What is meant by the bold, red warning........"You must do a complete wipe before installing this package." Does "wipe" mean FORMAT? If yes......format what? The NOOK? The SD card? Both?
2. In the video included in the tutorial, there's reference to an unZIPing program being required to 'uncork' the downloaded files. The narrator says to right click and unzip the files. (When I right click on my zipped files, the only command I see that MIGHT an unzip function is "Extract all". Is that an unzip program?)
3. The most 'complicated' process of all, (to me, anyway) the selecting of the files and unzipping them and "flashing" them (is that just another word for copying or installing?) is passed over so quickly and with the camera so far away from the screen in the video....it's very difficult to see and understand exactly what is happening. For example, at exactly 4:06 into the video, the narrator says to right click on the CWM file.....at which point, it looks like he actually LEFT clicks it and it opens to show TWO files.....and he then RIGHT clicks on one of them, but doesn't say what it's name is or what it should do.
Sorry to sound like a whiney noob......but, remember, only noobs are watching this; otherwise we wouldn't be watching it!
Can someone please elaborate on the click here.....now do this......then do that.......then you will see this......and now you have to do these? I'm sure I speak for more people than just myself when I ask this.
Thanks very much for any help.

I'm running CM10 and have not seen the video you speak of... But I think I can help with some of what you're looking for.
1. Wipe and format are often used synonymously. For example wiping your system or data partition on your device is the same as formatting. If the video is talking about the SD card, the same philosophy applies. A formatted card is ideal before starting.
2. Again, unzip and extract are somewhat synonymous. What program they are likely referring to is 7zip. It's a powerful compression and decompression utility.
3. Flashing describes the process of installing a package(ROM, zip, etc...) from one media(SD in this case) and installing it to a normally read only media (the Nook's internal drive. Including the system and data partitions of the disk) This is usually done through a recovery program that starts up instead of the normal OS. In most cases it is Clockwork Mod recovery (CWM) or something very much like it.
Like I said, I haven't seem the video and never went the manual nooter route. I totally wiped stock nook and went the CyanogenMod route. So I can't comment on the video's vagueness in this case. Maybe another member has some insight on this.

Thanks very much for the suggestion, leapinlar,.....but I'm still getting the Lock error even after making sure ALL windows of Explorer are closed (especially any for the SD drive).
Dumb question: I don't think either the text from GMPOWER or the video ever state WHERE the win32 diskimager and/or the clockwork-3.2.0.1 should be residing when these operations are taking place. I would ASSUME they're all supposed to be on the SD card....but I've been wrong before when assuming!!
Also, when I first tried this, I noticed I had downloaded (and possibly extracted) the win32diskimager-source.zip (SOURCE) version as opposed to the BINARY version. Should I start over? With a cleanly formatted SD? (my formatting took a long, long time when I initially did it.......not using the Quick method, as I think I saw advised somewhere.)
Thoughts? Thanks!
EDIT: Actually, I think I just answered PART of my question: when I tried it again (after formatting the SD and putting ALL three zipped files on the card) I got a new/different error:
"Image file cannot be located on the requested device." So, I guess that means that at least the "eyeballer" image file CANNOT be sitting on the SD card while you attempt to "write" it there. Yes? No?
Therefore....by the same token....is it safe/possible to run the Win32DiskImager from the SD card.....or should it ALSO be located somewhere else during this process??
ANOTHER EDIT: Tried removing the image file from the SD card, then running DiskImage and selecting the image file that I'd downloaded and unzipped to my hard drive. STILL got the "lock error". Getting frustrated. Most grateful for any suggestions/help. Please and Thanks
You definitely need the img file on your PC before you try to burn. Having it on SD and putting that location in the image box will definitely lock the card. Try again with nothing on the card and no other program running.

Thanks, buddy!
That was apparently my problem
I formatted the card back to being a virgin.....put NOTHING on it. Went to Win32 on my hard drive, launched it, found the eyeballer image on my HARD DRIVE and selected it to flash onto my card in the G-drive.
And away it went!!! Lovely! Just friggin lovely!!
Now, since instructions everywhere often seem to be devoid of these fine "details".......could you be so kind as to give me EXPLICIT directions on what to do next? (I'd hate to turn my Nook Color into a paperweight at this stage!)
The sequence of events (i.e. when the nook gets turned on/turned off/hooked up/ etc seem to be different in different places........I notice even the video from Acsyndicate TV, they insert a little apology in the corner saying they forgot to turn it on; DOH!! Also, I see elsewhere that the Nook should be connected by USB at some point during this process....and yet the guy in the video doesn't have a cable showing anywhere any time. WTF??)
Thanks tons for your help leapinlar.......I'm almost at the point of not buggin you any more!

Installation/rooting successfully completed, but now unable to download any apps because of "Sorry there's not enough space......." error appearing for every attempted download.
Is there a secret.......let me rephrase that.......what IS the secret to deleting all the crap that must be in there taking up all the space?
I rooted a virtually STOCK Nook Color (1.4.3) using manualnooter-5.08.20.basic.block_updates.zip - and it appeared to be fine, but I'm assuming there's a routine that must be followed to either "turn on" the ability to download......or free up some space to download......new apps.....which, after all, is the only reason we root these things.......right?
Thanks for any/all info.

You apparently have a lot of B&N stuff (apps, games, etc) installed (1.7 GB worth), but 3.35 GB should be plenty for installing more apps through Play Store. I don't know what your issue is.
Edit: You do not say, but I am assuming you meant downloading apps with Play Store. If you meant downloading some other way, like a browser, you need an sdcard to do that and you have not said how much room your SD card has.

OK....good feedback....THANKS!
1. Yes, I mean to download using Play Store (which currently is labeled MARKET. Presumably it'll update itself and change its name to GOOGLE PLAY when we get the storage problem solved.......will it?
2. I have next to no previous apps or media (maybe 4 apps and 4 books and 3 magazines) downloaded to the NC......but, perhaps it doesn't take much to fill this puppy?
3. I don't even have an SD card in it at this point. I removed the one I used to do the rooting because it booted to it when I started up the Nook this AM........and I assumed that was a bad thing.....or, at least unnecessary.
Should I erase the "rooting SD card"........or "keep it in a safe place" and use a new one for downloading/storing apps and media?
Thanks,
Mike

1. It should have changed itself immediately. That may be indicative of the problem.
2. Are any of the books kids interactive books? They take a lot of space.
3. If you did not make a backup with the CWM card, and you don't plan to restore the backup in the future, then reformat the card to use as a normal SD. But I recommend you do the backup and keep the card as CWM. Then get a new one.

1. Hmmmm. Hope THAT'S not a disaster. "Market" opens Ok and I can see hundreds (maybe thousands) of apps. But, I've used the search utility and searched for "Google Play".........."Google"..........and even "Market"........and no Google Play comes up in the search results. Shouldn't it?
2. No kids in the familly; no 'interactive' stuff of any kind that I know of....a couple of novels, couple of magazines.....sodoku, Evernote, YouTube, calculator, a little drum machine, flashlight.......mirror......holy crap, looks like wifey's been active after all!!
3. I DIDN'T make a backup with (of ?) the CWM card. Back up of what, exactly......the old disk image (operating system? Pardon my noobiness). Is it too late to make any required copies/backup? I just now copied the contents of the "rooting SD card" into a folder on my laptop's hard drive.......but I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about.

1. That may be the problem. It should update itself, but is not critical. The older versions of market temporarily stored their downloads on a separate partition named cache. That may be full from earlier downloads. Boot to CWM and there is an option to wipe cache. Do that. Then try to use market again.
3. The CWM card is capable of making what is called a nandroid backup. It backs up your entire operating system to SD so that if in making future mods, you make a mistake, you can restore your operating system to the way it was before you started making mods. It is too late to do that for you, but you can still backup what you have now.

NookManager (updated for 1.2.2)

For my own use ( see https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/how-to-force-reinstall-nook-simple-t3971367 for details ), I have put the needed updates into a new NookManager1.2.2 package (https://www.dropbox.com/s/kdlabh09txkx3k9/NookManager1.2.2.img?dl=0 ) so that it can be used for Nook Simple Touch 1.2.2 directly with updates described here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/development/nst-g-updating-nookmanager-t3873048), thanks to nmyshkin (https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=5562185).
Hello -- Not sure if anyone reads this anymore....
I'm trying to root a NST. I believe I've created the micro sd properly, and when I insert it and reboot, I see "Nookmanager Loading...". But then it just hangs there.
I've used a 32gb class 10 card. I have seen elsewhere that I should not use anything higher than class 6. Could this be the problem?

I don't think the class is the problem but your NST might be struggling with the 32 gb size.

I have a 2gb, and then next larger is 32gb. I guess that means I could root, but then not have enough room for a backup. And I'm guessing making a backup is advisable? Is there anyway to get back to stock w/o having made a backup?

OK, I should have checked before my last response. The original thread specifies 512 mb as a minimum, room enough for NookManager and a backup.

I just tried with the 2gb, as googling suggested that many others had used that. And I'm still getting the same issue: I see "NookManager Loading...." in font of normal darkness right when I boot up, and then after hanging like that for 20 seconds, that text fades to the point where I can hardly see it, and nothing happens but that.

I guess it's possible that the image is faulty. It's not difficult to update the original NookManager card yourself. You can follow the link referenced in the OP which leads to my update instructions. That may work out better for you.

Thanks, I appreciate your helping me through this. The person who first told me about rooting NSTs warned me against using sd cards higher than class 6. This thread seems to hint at the same issue, esp. with class 10. I've been using class 10. It is hard to find anything lower, but I just ordered a class 4 from eBay and I guess I'll wait to see if that works any better.

Yes, I've seen the warnings about class 10, even with the Nook Tablet, but I've not encountered problems. As you say, other than a special order, its hard to come by anything that's not class 10. The NookManager card I've used for many years is a SanDisk class 10 Ultra. Never had a problem with it. YMMV.

Thanks very much again. I'll give the special order card a try when it arrives, and if it doesn't, I guess I'll try to update the original NookManager, as you first suggested.
Is it possible to downgrade a Nook's firmware to 1.2.1 in order to use the original NookManager? Or maybe that's just more trouble than it could possibly be worth.

There's no sense in "downgrading" to FW 1.2.1. While you're waiting for the card to arrive I'd sure give yourself a chance to make your own NookManager update. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Well you were right: I was able to successfully root the device with a class 10 sd card by changing the scripts and replacing the jars in the way you instruct here. Thank you!!
Unfortunately I'm not able to establish any successful internet connection with either wifi source I use in my home. Any thoughts on why that might be? (I was having connectivity issues before I rooted it, too.) -- Actually, the device does say I'm successfully connected, it's just that the browser doesn't work and I also cannot connect to the Amazon App Store for Android (which, as you know, is a default app option on the rooted device).
Maybe I should just say what I'm trying to achieve: I'd like to use the NST as an external e-ink screen. So all I really need is a way to work with txt files that can be saved to an sd card. It would be nice, too, if I could email them to myself or otherwise upload them to the cloud from the NST, but that's not essential.
Any tips on how I might achieve that limited functionality even if I can't fix these connectivity issues?
Thanks again!

There is likely nothing wrong with your wifi. Reading a little further in the NookManager update thread you will see that the Amazon App Store has been dead for a long time. The same is true for the stock browser. You can uninstall both (for the stock browser that just entails deleting the apk file from /system/app and rebooting.) Also in that same post is a copy of Opera Mobile. That browser will work. You can side-load it if you need a browser.
As for email, either some version of k9 or the stock aosp email client will work. If you follow the link in my signature you will find a list of apps I run. One is the stock email with a link. You can search the forum for k9. I posted it somewhere for somebody long ago but don't remember exactly where.

Thanks so much. For various reasons, I decided to flash back to stock and then re-root. My NST then ended up with many more apps on it than it did the first time. And I also now see more of the Nook's rooted file structure, too. Not sure what was different.
My main task right now is updating the uImage and uRamdisk files with these here. My understanding is that this is required to get host mode working for an external keyboard. But I have no idea how to go about doing this. Any tips on that would be gratefully received!

These are the instructions I have used for changing kernals: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...issue-explanation-added.1563645/post-24168019
There is also a CWM kernal update file somewhere on the forum, but that would require preparing yet another card with CWM, etc. If you have ADB working, the earlier solution would be simplest.
