Hi Guys, i own an A501 for one week now, running 3.2 (already installed when buying it).
I understand that it is not possible to root or downgrade 3.2.
But, and here comes my question: Why isn't it possible to use the recovery-function to install an already rooted 3.2?
People trying to downgrade to 3.1 or lower get an error message, but when they re-flash 3.2 their tablet is running again.
So why can't we just re-flash an already rooted 3.2?
Regards
Carsten

SPCIIW, but I believe the "rooted 3.2" ROMS are all using the 3.1 bootloader, not the 3.2 bootloader, and that's why you can't flash to a rooted 3.2
OMG... another completely meaningless post??? PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING!!!!
I understood your question well, so here's the answer.
You can't modify the update.zip file from Acer in any way because when flashing it verifies each file against a file where there is a list with the files to be installed and their CRC, if you modify or add something the flash fails.
Trying to use other already rooted customs rom is no gonna work, because they changed the boot loader to recognize only Acer roms and updates files.
Hope it helps you.

That would be wrong. I install a rooted 3.2 rom from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1232545.html
Long as you have CWM installed. And I installed Thor 3.4 to OC and my tab works like a charm. So its possible to do.
*admit I'm not sure if this Tom has a 3.1 boot loader however it works great. Let me know if you need further help.
I'm talking about somebody who already did the update to STOCK 3.2, not about customs roms. Try to flash a custom rom after you are in stock 3.2 and see how it fails the flash.

And locked the bootloader again, which is why we don't have root once again. The Eepad has already been rooted for 3.2, but since most of the DEVs in the a500 forums have left for greener pastures, I'm not certain we'll see root for 3.2 anytime soon. I hope I'm wrong?

I'm obvious not a Dev but please explain how fguy rooted this 3.2 rom. Its an Acer 501 stock rom. No mods other then the rooted part and the two full version apps. Granted its a "custom" rom however it the best waynto get root access with 3.2 all the updates. I'm in south Africa and the 3.2 update hasn't even hit here yet. So this is the best option for me. And I'm sure for alot of others.

I'm pretty sure he used the bootloader from 3.1 on a stock 3.2 ROM. I'm using and it's flawless so far (relative to stock ROMs).
Thanks for the answers, hope to see a posibility to root 3.2 in the near future

this is a prime example why it is always best to wait until the devs get their hands on the update. You are just going to have to wait till the root programs and CMW are updated to work with the new build. Early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese

Yeah its true u better should be patient...
I dont know whether the devs are working on it..but a downgrade to 3.0.1 or3.1 would solve the problem... there are various ROMS/ custom ROMS..
To my sorrow i almost used every rom they offered in the dev section..
One Rom should work..if not try to be patient... =D

i think it is because of the new bootloader. Your best bet at this point is to just wait for the new root program to come out. Shouldn't take them that long for it. Don't know about the itsmagic update that could take time, but everything would speed up if anybody would upload the new build so the devs can start looking at it.
I captured the 3.2 update when it came in to my tablet, I have the update.zip and would gladly share it if it helps get root faster.
Not entirely sure the best way to share a 350meg file though!
File I have is an update from 4.010.38 (3.1) to 7.006.01 (3.2) (file claims to be Acer_A500_4.010.38_7.006.01_COM_GEN1)
I can probably put it on some webspace for someone, but I'm afraid if I post it publicly my bandwidth limit will be quickly exceeded.

Of course that occurred to me about 10 seconds after I hit submit...
So I have uploaded it to megaupload...
Unfortunately this forum won't let me post external links... so I can't tell you how to find it!
edit: ok, finally I can post links, so I'm updating this: www.megaupload.com/?d=UXOVADAS
This update comes from 4.010.38 to 7.006.01 so you'll need to be on 4.010.38 first to do the update. (that one can be found in the master ROM list on this site at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 )

Hopefully this allows some of the developers to start playing with rooting 3.2
Additionally for anyone who has managed to brick their tablet trying to downgrade to an earlier version, this file can be used to get you back up and running (at least it worked to get me back up after I tried to downgrade to 3.1)
Thanks for the upload

First off thanks for all the the great roms and how to's to all the devs ... I have flashed to stock 3.2 now i can't gain root ..... any ideas???
Currently there is no way to root the stock 3.2 FOTA. Nor can you go back to the older ROMs as a new bootloader was written when you flashed.
itsmagic and CWM no longer work.
Thanks for the the quick reply... was afraid of that answer ,guess I am gonna have to wait. I sure someone will figure it out real soon ...

I'm having the same problem. Just after buying my A500, I updated it to 3.2 but I didn't know that root wasn't available in that version. Nor that I couldn't downgrade to 3.1 because of the new bootloader.
Does anyone know if it's possible to downgrade this bootloader in order to downgrade to stock 3.1 rom too? I feel that the answer is that it's not possible...

No. It's not currently possible.
I'll probably get people barking at me for suggesting this, but given that you've only recently purchased your tablet, you could always take it back and exchange it. Depending on where you got it from, they may have a satisfaction return window (usually 14-30 days for big box retail). This would allow you to return to an older version, or upgrade to a custom 3.2 ROM instead.
Normally this type of behavior is frowned upon, mainly because it is speculated to result in raised prices of consumer products in general. In truth, really it is up to the retailer. If they are willing to observe a satisfaction return policy, and you are unsatisfied with the product, you are operating within the business perimeters that they've established. It wouldn't be illegal, so its merely a question of your own morality and your willingness to take advantage.
I guess it depends on how badly you need root. For me, it is a show-stopper. My tablet sits at home now that I've lost root, mainly because it is useless for my needs without ad-hoc support.
Or you could just wait for the 3.2 root, but my gut tells me it might be a while. I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling about this particular upgrade. That's not really based on anything factual though.
Cheers,
-PW

Once you are on stock 3.2 you can not root, and you can not downgrade, and you can not flash any modified or non-stock image. There is simply no way to do this until someone finds a way to root 3.2

I guess that's not correct, at least for A501 but I think for A500, too.
I followed those steps to get a rooted HC 3.2 for my A501:
- Download HC 3.1: Acer_A500_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7 http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com/Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7_1311771237783_253e5e46.zip
- Download Decrypter [DEV][APP] http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099673
- Decrypt downloaded file with Decrypter (put Decrypter and Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7.zip into same folder)
- Unzip Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7_decrypt.zip
- Copy update.zip from the above package to MicroSD card of A501
- shutdown (NOT restart!) A501
- Power up the tablet using Volume - & Power buttons (hold buttons until text shows up)
- A501 finds update.zip and Update will commence
After that you will have HC 3.1 on your tablet. Now root your tablet with iconiaroot 1.3 (use google to find the apk). Once it is rooted you are able to install ClockWorkMod via Acer Recovery Installer from Market, there's a thread somewhere around here, too.
Then look at thread:
[ROM][24.08]Acer A500 HC 3.2 4.015.01[HC 3.2][CWM & root] - xda-developers
So far I have no problems, everything's seem to work okay, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G...
Hope this helps! However, I am not responsible if you brick your device! Do it on your own risk!

If you care about root and having CWM installed I would not update to stock 3.2 using OTA. Just grab one of the 3.2 updates in the development thread so you can retain root. But if just want plain stock 3.2 and you have CWM installed, you need to revert back to the stock recovery first otherwise it will fail.

Understatement of the century there. Takes about twenty minutes, including the time it takes to search the dev forum using the phrase "downgrade 3.2". You don't even need a PC, you can do it all using the tablet.

To anyone else who needs to root just download kekinash's stock rom with superuser, it's the exact same thing as this without the steps just flash and you have rooted 3.2.
And you are in a small group of people that have SD card issues, I've owned 2 Iconia a500's and neither had a single SD issue.
It wasn't me
It was timmyDean who added root for stock 3.2. he described how to get root in adb shell only (the very first post in the thread I posted)
The way to add superuser for applications was described by chrishohl on the 3rd page of the same thread
Following his how-to one can get the rooted stock 3.2 without downgrade.

Nope, I haven't any issues with SD card, the only goal for now is 3G USB modem kernel modules. I haven't find any modules for the stock 3.2 kernel version.
Those for 3.1 failed to load with insmod since they had been built for another kernel version.

No nap root method.but there is a downgrade/install rooted 3.2.
Naps are fun when taken with the correct person root Not required.

It's easier to just be helpful/
I used the Acer Recovery app and dropped back to 3.0.1 and restored stock kernel.
From there I just did a System Update check and it pushed me OTA to 3.2.
I'm Now waiting for the 4.0.1 to be pushed to me in Ottawa, Canada.

I actually tried the Acer Recovery App last night on my rooted device and all it seemed to do is change the recovery screen and if you don't already have a backup of the stock rom in place it will sit there and do absolutely Nothing. I had to find the update.zip last night which was a total pain. If you want it just PM me and I will see about getting that file over to you if you want. Or I can attempt to upload it some where just give me a little bit. Granted the one I have if I recall correctly is 3.01 but still you just update a few times to get to 3.2.1

Good question, I was on a custom HC Rom so I am not 100% certain on that. I will post the link to download it from drop box when it is done so you can try it if you want. I mean I assume it would considering all it is doing is dropping you back to 3.01 but than again I have no idea if it would get kernel conflict issues and what not.
Edit: Actually I think I was on one of Thor's ICS Roms awhile back and all I did was Flash a different HC Rom and back to HC I went than last night I restored the whole thing to Stock considering I want to get the OTA so my assumption is it "SHOULD" work.

Just rename the thing to update.zip when I put the link up and stick it on the root of your sd card memory and it should as far as I know see it with the stock recovery. Depending on how much longer it has to go I might have to wait until I get home to get the file uploaded but I will try to get it up and posted here before I leave work.

No problem. Let us all know if it works for you I am sure other people will be wondering the same and most likely be in the same type of situation you are in.

Yeah, i find it strange that we got a leak back in march, but now that the official release is out there isnt a zip out there to download. Hopefully going back to HC fixes my accelerometer issue and ill just wait for the OTA.
EDIT: dang, looks like its not going to work. Got the Android with the red triangle exclamation point.

You renamed the file to update.zip instead of 3.1update.zip right? Also you have it on the root of your sd card? If that doesn't work try one of the root methods for the leaked ICS than install CWM and try it that way.

Yea I would try to do it via CWM than.
Also it is a gen2 USA ROM so if your on a device other than that it might not work.
If you are go ahead and try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Vache has a bunch of OTA Recoveries there that I assume still work.
Edit: Checked the links and they seem to all download, just tried a couple to check. Also the EMEA ones as far as I know are for the European devices I Think. The COM ones I think are strictly US. Not sure exactly how that part works but anyway there they are for you if going via CWM Doesn't work.

I would use CWM. I actually went back through and re-read the posting it came from and it says use CWM so I would probably do that.
Honeycomb 3.2.1 stock rom
Hi There,
I'd like to know if you have a copy of Honeycomb 3.2.1 stock rom for North America?
The one that you can put on the sd card and renamed it as update.zip?
ICS is slowing down my wifi browsing experience...
Thanks for your help.
