From Engadget:

Emphasis mine:
according to a leaked employee memo uncovered by SprintFeed, October 2nd is the dreadful date in which all unlimited plans (sorry Sprintsters, there's no grandfathering) will be given a limit of 5GB, and any overage will be charged five cents per MB. It appears that only phones will be affected, leaving tableteurs safe for now. So if you're currently using the hotspot feature, enjoy the last few solid days of sweet downloading while you can.

According to the leaked memo, Sprint says that traffic generated on the phone is still unlimited, but using the built-in hotspot will now be limited. I wonder how this will affect people using wifi tether (who don't have a Hotspot plan to being with). Does wifi tether pass off tethered traffic as phone traffic? I mean, there shouldn't be a difference. Packets are packets...unless they do deep packet inspection and look at the browser strings.
Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.
Use a VPN when you use wifi tethering so they can't peek into your traffic, problem solved.
These could just be rumors. I don't think sprint would of gone thought all that trouble in there commercials bragging about unlimited DATA, with examples of other CARRIERS with DATA caps. I don't there will be a cap...
5GB cap on 3g/4g? How is that possible if they can't track 4G usage since 4G isn't through them? is it possible the can now?

just got off the phone with a Supervisor from the Sprint Customer Relations team where the supervisor said that they are not planning to discontinue the "Unlimited" Data hence the reason they are charging the $10 dollar Premium data, so that they can continue to provide the unlimited data services to its Subscribers.

Not denial... it just does not make any sense that Sprint would sacrifice its last network feature this fast. Remember, they took away SP and all the perks with it, the last reason why anyone would stay on sprint is precisely the unlimited data usage. Sure their prices are lower compared to the other telcos (and not by much) but keep in mind that many complain about extremely low speeds and lack of coverage in many areas.
Removing the unlimited data plan would mean that they are no longer competitive when compared against the other telcos... their lower price would not be incentive to anyone to keep/open a contract with them and it implies they would promptly align their prices with the pricing of the other telcos little after, basically being one more in the bandwagon.
Until I receive an official letter from them informing me of this change I wont believe it.
The curse of the iPhone.
Sprint will eventually (in 2012) get rid of unlimited. Once the "revolutionary" phone drops on Sprint they will be waiting to gain subscribers, lock them in, and change. Bait and switch style.

Besides it looking bad for them to be plugging their unlimited data and then pull it, are there numbers to look at so we can see what percentage of the subscriber base does more than 5Gb of data?
Chillax people, the unlimited HOTSPOT data is going away, not the unlimited phone data. Most people on this forum are rooted and get this for free anyway so it will have no affect. It is an omnimous sign though.

6 days into my new bill, already used 7gb of data. Granted its 3g, not tethering, but with smart phones its definitely easy to surpass 5gb. Sprint will eventually get rid of unlimited data and switch to caps like the other carriers. Even the ceo or whatever of Sprint, Dan hesse, fortold of a day in which cell phone plans would be priced on data usage, not minutes. That day is quickly coming.

It's super easy to get up to 5gb of data. If you don't use WiFi. Flash a few Roms, watch some YouTube, view news everyday you're easily pushing 5gb's.

So this new sprint "law" will NOT affect rooted ppl? Are you guys positive they have no control over this?

And also if they decide to control they "unlimited" plan on smartphones we should be able to get out of their contract right?

If you have the hotspot hack, you shouldn't be affected, but if you're paranoid you can always use tether apps from the market. They cannot control that. I have used the tether app for a long time with no consequences.

Although we already knew that a new plan for customers that want to Tether was coming soon and then yesteday, confirmed for November 3rd, the folks over at BGR have recieved details on the new tethering plan. T-Mobile will officially offer the $14.99 /MonthTethering and WiFi-Sharing Add-On beginning November 3rd. The plan will allow subscribers to use their smartphones as a tethered modem or Wi-Fi hotspot. To qualify for the $14.99 Tethering add-on, you will need to have a 3G/HSPA+ capable handset in addition to an unlimited web plan of $19.95 or higher. The tethering plan also counts towards your 5GB data cap. So that means once you’ve used 5GB of data, your speeds will be throttled. The plan will be available for Postpaid and Flex Pay Customers.

To the OP, it's still unlimited data. You'll get dropped to Edge when you pass your 5gig softcap on a data plan. If you pay extra for tethering you'll be added an additional 5gigs. Thus bringing the softcap to 10gigs.
What I'm wondering is what's going to happen to everyone that was grandfathered in with the 10gig data softcap. Do they stay with 10gig data plans or are they knocked down to 5gig softcaps. Yes, I understand it still unlimited but I'm not interested on tethering with an Edge connection.
Excuse my language but Wtf type of sh*t is that? First they don't want you to tether, then they are gonna let u tether for another 5gb and that's it???? They can suck a fat one. Btw I've already been throttled and it aint that bad so I'm pretty sure this new idea of theirs is gonna blow back in their face. If only verizon has the g2 or a htc phone with physical keyboard

Well, they will have their version of the G2, but then what? You'll leave T-Mobile for the Red Devil? They charge for tethering too you know?
Geez, what's the big fuss about them charging for tethering. You'll still be able to tether your connection without paying for the plan, granted it will STILL be against the terms and conditions but there's nothing stopping you from doing so.
My brother tethers his Verizon BlackBerry and he doesn't have any sort of tethering plan. I'm on T-Mobile and I tethered my BBs (when I had them) and my G1 without any issues, now I didn't go out there and stream and download this and that and make it obvious that I was using a lot of data.
If you recall T-Mobile did say that CURRENTLY tethering was not available but they were LOOKING into it because customers are interested. "Looking into it" is just their way of saying "Yeah, we're gonna support tethering but we're figuring out what to charge for it".
Bottom line, you don't like it, leave T-Mobile if you think they're screwing you. Why stress yourself out by *****ing about it?
I'm just wondering about those who are semi-rooted running the wifi tether app? How is t-mobile going to be able to distinguish this from any other data use? I use the wifi tether for root users apk on a daily basis since I got visionary, I guess I'll see on my november billing cycle whether they can tell or not.

i.e. if you have a 5GB cap now, you will have a 5GB cap when you add tethering. I assume if you have a 10GB cap now you would have a 10GB cap when tethering.

I don't think they care if you use tether or not. They probably hope you do. It's people who already tether that are mostly likely going to feel the hit. Every smartphone user pays for a data plan which is for 5gigs. What you do with those 5gigs is up to you ex. tether, torrents, xbox live, mp3 downloads, stream porn, its doesn't mater. After your 5gigs are up. Then what? Can hardcore tether users live off an Edge connection? No. Now people who have never tethered before and know nothing about root will think it's awesome. When in fact they could have been tethering long before. When you stop and see it from that angle, how many of these tmo customers who are going to get the tether package will ever hit the 5gig limit? I doubt may of them will. They probably wont even tap into their tethering plan and fall below the 5gig data plan softcap. Which means they've paid $14.99, for data they never even used.
This is assuming that tmo will see any form of data movement weather it be through tethering or receiving a MMS as data. This would tie into the whole tmo can suspect you of tethering because of a 6/8/20/100mb usage her and there. When normally I've never gone pass 500mb a month even with very lite tethering.
Or I could just be flat out wrong.
This is complete bs. Does this apply to older phones too? I'm a hardcore USB tether user on my G1. How will they even be able to tell if I'm tethering or not?

Either way, screw that - I'll never pay for tethering.
I think this was their plan the whole time? Which is most likely why the G2 is locked down the the it is. They want to charge for something that can be done for free if the phone was rooted. I wouldn't be shocked if all phones from this point on is locked up as well.
So technically, they are not allowing unlimited data, correct? I did not read through a lot of this thread, but from what I understood in the first two posts, it seems like T-Mobile is changing their contact, looks like it might be time for me to get out for free.
Good god, why are you people so upset? Tethering isn't technically allowed right now, although tons of people do it. What, are you guys going to stop tethering because T-Mobile is going to charge for an official service? Of course not. You'll use PdaNet or mobile AP and T-Mobile won't give a crap, just like always.

No, it's still unlimited data, it's just that there's a soft cap where they'll throttle you down to Edge if you go over 5GB. But the soft cap applies to all data, whether tethered or not, and always has (it used to be 10GB).

Damn. Have you read past the 2 first post? I answered both these questions on the first page. I'm not pissed I'm just wondering my post made sense.
So, Sprint called me today to inform me that they are dropping my service because of excessive data roaming. They are not charging me an ETF and they are giving my 250$ deposit back. I am not upset about that, I am upset about not being able to use my Evo and the community that comes with it. I will miss the HTC XDA community if I have to go to Motorola or LG or SE.
My only choice when it comes to coverage is Verizon. The only phone that seems to be on the horizon is the Bionic that comes with LTE. I don't want the Droid X or Droid 2 because LTE is about to launch and would enjoy to have it, along with that sweet sweet dual core. Bionic seems to be the best bet, but I remember hearing something LG dropping a phone soon too.
My main question is, what Android phones are coming out this year with LTE and dual core? I don't mind being without phone service for a few months waiting.
wow, may I ask what your excessive data usage amounted to?

Of course.
It wasn't really excessive it was just that the majority of it was roaming. I only get Verizon coverage at work where I use my phone the most (when it comes to data, have WiFi at home) so I used the PRL hack to be on it all the time. I heard about them being upset about this and I was expecting at least a warning but they are straight up dropping my service.
My average data usage was 4 to 5GB on roaming with around 300-400mb on Sprint for the past 4-5 months.
Noob question...how do you know you are recieving roaming data? I have been complaining about horrible data speeds and told them i want to cancle with no fee. They said they basically base that off of calls dropped.and not data. I uae my phone minimal for calling but data is another story and it is horribly slow.
Verizon has a HTC android coming out soon, it's suppose to be a really good one. Sorry I cannot remember the name of it, but when I get a chance I will post it back in here with a link for you. Sorry to hear about Sprint. Did you use the data hack by any chance?(sorry, posted above) If so that's why I never jumped on board with that. Good luck, hopefully you'll still be here on XDA.

Doesn't the Unlimited Plan include free roaming?? Where is there verbiage about "excessive roaming"??
that sucks. Unlike some ISP's for land lines which come to agreements so each can freely use the others networks, I don't think any wireless providers do anything of the sorts. While its ****ty they didnt give you a warning, i'm sure they were probably paying up the ass to verizon.
Well, best of luck to you!

Yeah the fine print. if you go read the official data usage section it states that no more than 300mb may be used per month. Hints why 4-5gb got your service dropped instantly. You just let Verizon run over sprint then reverse and run them over with that bill they had to pay.

Actually the 300MB is for data cards. There is no roaming limit. They will cancel you if the majority of your usage is roaming and towers over Sprints.
I'll keep my eye on the Bionic and the Thunderbolt. Hopefully Motorola will work with the community and not have locked bootloaders.
Correct the roaming is for minute usage not data. People get kicked for the talk not data. Data roaming booting applies to data cards as well not phones but you will be charged overages on phone data roaming.

That is not correct. I am being dropped for data roaming on my Evo. No charges or anything are being applied to it.
There is somewhat if a simple solution. Tell them you roam mostly at home and they will send you a free airave (you have to push to get it for free). Basically it is a small sprint tower that goes thru your local ISP. Ooonce powered up, about two hours) it works flawless.

If you log into your Sprint account and look under your plan details it says 500 mb of roaming data.
The EVO you wish you had
They say that there is such things that are "unlimited", but it's not really. They just set a cap so high that they believe no one will hit. Altell used to do this with their messaging plans.
It's kind of crappy that they're doing this to you, but I would avoid any Moto product unless the C-mod gets ported to it quickly. Motorola phones from what I've seen and used of them, are terrible. Moto Blur sucks, and build quality isn't bad but they have awkward builds. Decent battery life in them, and decent support for their high end devices. But that's about it.

Yup!!
I have been contemplating leaving sprint also. They may have truly unlimited data but in reality you dont use much data via sprint network as it takes forever to load anything in Baton Rouge. O and guess what, the data unlimited plan is not truly unlimited. The will cut off your service if you use over 5 gb (may be less) of data on 3g. It is only the use of 4g which is truly unlimited.
They have been saying Baton Rouge would have 4g since the evo came out and yet still nothing. The sad part is Hammond has 4g and the population is not even 1/8th of Baton Rouge's pop. I doubt BR will ever get 4g.
As far as getting out ETF free, good luck with that. I have tried every way possible with no luck. But what I have not done, which would definitely work, is stream as much youtube and download huge files as much as possible or force your phone into roaming on data and calls for consecutive months

It's not the price they're raising but the amount you save from your employer discount is going to be a lot less. So it's definitely going to cost you more. They've been doing a lot of things that have been making people want to switch. They charge for "premium" data, completely stopped expanding 4g, scrapped the annual upgrade, killed the premier status, and now this? They're making it really hard for anyone to want to stick around...
The will cut off your service if you use over 5 gb (may be less) of data on 3g. It is only the use of 4g which is truly unlimited.

not once in my 8 years with sprint have i ever had an issue with going over 5gb which i always do, nor have i ever heard anyone say it happened to them unless they were roaming more then using sprint
3G here in new Orleans has been terrible since 08 but there family plans just beats anyone. And I'm constantly around wifi so its not as bad.

Anything is "a lot less" when people are just looking for an excuse to cancel. The highest discount will be losing $5.40 a month, but those are rare, most people will go down just a few cents to a dollar a month.
I actually like what they've been doing and the direction they're headed, it is putting a stop to all these people talking advantage of what they have to offer. Where I live, my 3G gets over 2Mbps and 4G gets 10 so my unlimited data works great

4g is in the Best Buy area of Hammond. It doesnt show up on sprints map for some odd reason. if you dont believe me go to the area and try it out
If you want out, roam like a mofo. You have to roam a certain percentage in order for them to boot you.

Let me guess, you're tethering and using 50+ gigs a month? That's why you got that.

I dont use tethering on my phone because I have wifi around most the places I go not to mention the data speeds in baton rouge are slower than dial-up, so tethering woudn't be much use. It was one of those months I was downloading a bunch of different roms though.
Sorry to burst your bubble but not all sprint customers are bad customers. I had them send me a letter a time before that to tell me I was using too many roaming minutes the previous months and when I checked my bill for the prior months I only had about 30 or 40 minutes roaming for all the months. I called them and they were at a loss for words
So with VZ about to double data(again!), I have been thinking of getting a GNex with 5GB(or 10 since double), so if the Journal comes, Id have a great plan. Should I do that or get the ATT and get the 5GB plan? I hate that the only messaging option is 20$, and employee discounts do not help.
Thank you in advance!
One thing i learnt over the last decade using cell phone, gsm phone always resells easier, faster and at higher price compares to cdma. That's why i never go the verizon route. And do u really need over 5gb data? Sure 10 is great but unless u carry 3 battery around all the time and not using wifi at home, there is no way u can burn through 5gb data per month .
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
oh better believe some people burn through tons of gigs per month. If you stream netflix videos, tether your phone as a hotspot, etc. Then it is possible.

Yeah ive been using 4-5gb month since 2008. Probably alot more includong wifi. Since my window mobile days.
To op, like the above poster said gsm has better resale value. If signal quality isnt a issue att would be the better choice. Besides there bias with iphone, ive been a happy customer since 08.
If you want unlimited data, you can check if the iphone 2g trick still works.

I have the same problem right now. But seeing as I'm willing to believe that the journal will come to verizon soon hopefully, I'm willing to wait.

Im in NYC, so people are telling me not to get ATT.
I may blow throw the Limit, im on TMO never came close to the soft cap, but I am installing an Ipad in my car and would like to stream movies/videos w/e thru the note.
I want the 10 just because its a GOOD deal, would kick myself if I get the ATT, dont pick up a VZ phone with the double data, then the note comes out on VZ and i coulda had double the data!
I think I will pre-order and test for 30 days. If VZ had this deal before, theny may have again!
Does the Verizon loophole still work if you get the 4g hotspot, they give you unlimited data?

No they closed the loop and now going back and auditing those that pulled the hotspot after it gave them unlimited.

I have 450 min and lowest ATT data plan an have unlimited data using Sprints MiFi at $35mo. Don't dis Sprints Wimax. Here in Chicago its consistently faster than ATT's Hspa+, and downloads big sites faster than LTE devices at ATT or Verizon.

The Verizon version of the Note, should it come out(I think it will, hence the question/anxiety).
Most important is whether at&t works ok in your area. If it's tolerable with its overall coverage and data speeds, I'd say go for the at&t Note.
Don't be surprised if the Journal for VZW doesn't come out until like this summer at the earliest.
I'm basing this off the 9 month span it took the Thunderbolt to come out after the EVO was originally released for Sprint.
Problem is both at&t and VZW fell into the bad habit of taking forever to release phones. Culprits being long iPhone exclusivity for at&t....and OG Droid being a hit for VZW.

But IF they keep the 4G hotspot and not remove it after they got unlimited data, then the unlimited data still sticks?

I believe so.
if youre worried about data usage, just wait for the vzw version. ATT only offers you 3gb/mo + $10 per gb beyond that. I personally dont think the note is worth jumping ship over, especially since the journal will come out. It will have LTE as well.
How long will this double data promo last?
Its about time this happened. And hopefully other carriers will take notice.

it's don't understandable to me
Unlimited is just eye candy to these people there is no such thing as unlimited. For instance I had a contract with orange on a wildfire s UNLIMITED data usage n my wife used it a lot for Facebook but we used our wifi not the data n yet we got a bill in for £100 regarding data. It's the same with isp providers. They say and I quote "truly unlimited downloads" Yeh u can download as much as you want but they put a limit on your speed if you download around 5gb a month I personally download around 5gb a day movies music ROMS kernels apk's. Why should we be punished for it? Kudos on winning the case as small as the outcome was

There never has been and never will be "Unlimited." It says unlimited data use, not unthrottled data use. They never agreed to not throttle data, just that they'll let you use as much as you want.

People that buy phones see unlimited and they are like hell yea. Sprint used to throttle me all the time so I switched over to T-Mobile and the data is faster with sprint the data was fast but if I downloaded a file I would lose signal for about 30 secs then would come back on.
