i unlocked my 2.2.2 bootloader, the trying to install a ROM, bricked the phone. through RSD mode i re-flashed the original Tmobile sbf, and the unlocked symbol on startup has disapeared. is the phone locked again, or has the unlocked sign just stopped showing?
thanks

you just reinstalled the stock bootloader, which takes away your unlocked capabilities. for all means, your phone is still unlocked, but you just can't access the unlocked capabilities of your phone.
you'll need to reflash pudding to get unlocked again, possibly run 'fastboot oem unlock' again
after that, install Rom Manager from the market, and use it to flash Clockword Mod Recovery and then you can use Rom Manager to install your ROMs.
ok thanks, i'll do the oem unlock again. i still cant get rom manager to flash the recovery, since it says the phone is not rooted, no matter what i try. i am on mac, is it possible?

yes, make sure you have fastboot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138092
download this preinstall img here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=652327&d=1310460219
extract it to the same folder your fastboot is in, and while in fastboot mode (after you're unlocked again) use the command fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img
fastboot reboot into your phone, and use Terminal Emulator on your phone to run this command EXACTLY:
Code:
/preinstall/dosu
/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
cp /preinstall/su /system/bin/
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
PATH=/system/bin:$PATH pm install /preinstall/Superuser.apk
(big thanks to eval- for this easy root method)
when i run oem unlock i get no ID, does that mean its still unlocked? or that im doing it wrong flashing the "zomgunlock-lite.sbf" failed, which is the one i found suggested, though i cant remember which sbf i used to unlock first time.

alright, grab the international sbf and go ahead and re-unlock your device. then root with the method i posted.
awesome thanks, done it and alien is working! though now i do have one more question
when i try to log in to Motoblur i get an error saying there is a problem with the clock, and to contact customer services. i assume this is because alien is built on the AT&T firmware, and im using it in the UK? is there any way to get round this, or any other ROM that works better with the international/uk phone? thanks

Hi All,
I flashed the ubuntu touch preview to play around with on my Nexus 4, but since its still early days, I flashed back to android, but now I have a problem.
My phone is still rooted, as indicated by the unlocked lock when starting the phone. But when I downloaded supser su, it said no binary files and it wont work.
So basically my question is, what do I need to do now to get my phone back to being flashable and stuff.
Thanks in advance!
Zedd
You need to get a custom recovery back on the phone
ahh so cwm will make it all better?
flash the root zip via cwm.

the unlocked lock doesnt mean the phone is rooted. it just shows to say the bootloader is unlocked
so im trying to follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312 to re root my phone, but when i do fastboot devices it shows me in terminal "no permissions fastboot". i am in the bootloader, it says lock state - unlocked, so i know my bootloader should be unlocked...
anyone have any advice? i checked google and didnt see anything on this issue
Edit: errr silly me... i forgot to add sudo to begining of command :/ sorry hehee
So i'm new to android but i continued to root my device. I did it the "legit" way. No tool kit. I installed drivers. ADB and used bootloader. I unlocked the bootloader when the dialog popped on my phone. I navigated and selected "unlock the bootloader" sideloaded clockworkmod touch. Installed supersu from sdcard. Booted up and i still have my pictures and i even found a folder on the phone from the gosms app I had. I know im properly rooted because i was able to flash paranoid rom 3 successfully. Everywhere i've been reading states unlocking the bootloader wipes everything! My question is this normal?
Its standard protocol made by Google. Yes its normal. Just remember if you have stuff on your storage to make sure you back up your storage before unlocking

All you had to do is setup fast boot and use fast boot command fastboot oem unlock to unlock your bootloader. A message always comes up letting you knlw that unlocking bootloader erases your data. You didn't necessarily had to adb not to mention you went and side loaded a custom recovery. Guess you beat the system. Lol

The same thing happened to me. Apparently this happens if you flash the recovery right after unlocking the bootloader. Rather than unlocking, rebooting into android, then flashing the recovery.

Yep. I was pretty confused too.
So far I havent had any issues and everything seems fine. I flashed superuser on stock rom, flashed CM10.1, and flashed PA and everything has gone smoothly. Its only been about a week though, so im not sure if anything will happen. But i highly doubt that it will cause anything negative to occur.
Alright, so I finally found a Razr M that has the bootloader unlocked and went to root it and it wouldn't root. I booted into recovery and it has TWRP installed on it so I tried to install CleanRom and it failed and said something about it tried to patch something but I can get a picture if need be.
I'm kind of at a loss on what I need to do, bootloader is definitely unlocked since it has the splash screen and it says unlocked on the black screen (sorry don't know what it's called). It's on baseband .81P so if there is anything anyone could tell me I would greatly appreciate it.

Which tool did you use to root? The first time I tried to root right after getting the phone, I had to wipe cache/dalvik and FDR. Also, since your BL is unlocked, you should just be able to flash a SU binary in TWRP and get root. I know there's one running around here somewhere.

Motofail was for 4.1.1 and Motochopper was for 4.1.2 (this was included in the utility 1.20). Sometimes these things have to be run multiple times, at least that's what I've seen.
Here's Chopper by itself: http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/15208-root-motochopper-yet-another-android-root-exploit-412/ . However, you might have to wipe to get this to work, I did anyway. Before it comes to that, I would try to flash SU in recovery.
Thanks, flashed the SU Binary's and I'm up and running..now I have root and all is well in the world haha

So I tried to use the Nexus Root Toolkit to sideload the OTA, but now when I try to boot my phone it just shows the white google screen and doesn't do anything. I can use ADB and fastboot and get into the bootloader but I can't flash the factory image because I never checked the "Allow OEM Unlock" tick since I didn't plan on unlocking the bootloader. This is exactly why you should never mess with updates or flashing anything with a locked bootloader. If a factory reset doesn't fix it you're likely out of luck.
if your bootloader is locked still I can't see how flashing an OTA would effect this.
Have you tried to flash just the original bootloader from the android version on your device ( not the version you wish to update to )
Fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
DON'T USE A TOOL KIT ! UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING ! There where clear instructions on how to flash OTA's on this site and likely in the toolkit.
Unfortunately this is a case of NOT reading before doing things, I have yet to see anyone recover from this.
Best of luck tho, but it might be a lesson learned the hardway a.k.a RMA

I'll attempt this. Weirdly enough when I look at device info in adb it shows it as being on the newest version. But Yeah I'll attempt to flash what I was on before.
Yeah, I mean I've done this before with no issues on my Nexus 6 and there were no issues but that was unlocked when I got it. I just thought you didn't have to unlock the bootloader to sideload OTA's? I may be wrong.

I wish I had known they added that "Allow OEM Unlock" Switch in Lollipop. Would have solved my problem if I had that toggled.

Yeah I think they would do it since I technically didn't void any warrantys or anything. I appreciate the help. What do I need to make sure to do if I do this again in the future? Definitely "Allow OEM Unlock", and do I have to unlock the bootloader? I was under the impression that you didn't have to to flash an OTA.

Definitely unlock the bootloader, it isn't needed to flash an update via the stock recovery, but it is needed to get out of sticky situations like this. If your bootloader was unlocked now you'd be up and running in ten minutes.

Yeah, I'll probably wait for the update over the air for a while and maybe if I feel reallly eager I'll just make sure I unlock and such. Annoying that you can't unlock via fastboot anymore without that toggle. I get that Google is trying to make Android super secure but It's not too useful for folks like us. Sure it's bricked a lot of devices.

I've done it before with other devices. I wouldn't say it's inherently bad. It's just that there was one toggle that I wasn't aware of that caused the issue. You live and you learn.
THIS IS NOT MY IDEA !
I found this in a N9 thread and it worked according to the user with the issue, apply this with the correct t factory image ( do it with the version you have on your device not the one you tried to update to ! )
This might not work but its worth a try ! Before doing this read about ADB and Fastboot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try and understand the basics and know what the commands are doing to help backtrack e.C.t
If it does work - go to settings and allow OEM Unlock and USB debug !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then go read from reputable sources how to flash images manually via adb !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd follow vomers guides.
Had this problem with another device cool thing to remeber is that on locked devices the only thing that is different is that there is a signature before the MAGIC header so the solution is to pull the android stock images from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images. Once done extract the images in both the zip and the tar that is inside the zip. You will see recovery.img inside the tar. One thing about the boot process of TWRP is that it enables adb in preboot meaning while in the boot loop you should have access to adb. With access to adb all you need to do is dd the images over the corresponding partitions: i.e.
PLEASE NOTE NOT FOR THE FEINT OF HEART. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU BRICKING YOUR DEVICE.
Quote:
adb push recovery.img recovery.img
adb shell dd if=recovery.img of=/dev/block/<recoverymmcblock>
I dont know if the default recovery has adb push update so id probably recommend doing this on every partition thats inside the tar, i.e. system, boot.

The 10 is a little different.
Locked and unlocked work basically the same, and it's my understanding it's suggested to be S-OFF locked from Sunshine crew.
I've been S-OFF locked since release of vzw S-OFF and everything works perfectly.
Hope this helps a little.
Just doesn't work
I have been trying for hours to get it to accept Supersu but it just doesn't. I flashed TWRP and when I try to flash Supersu it goes through the motions and says everything is OK but my phone never gets rooted. I was thinking of trying fastboot OEM unlock. I don't know how they achieved S off and read that may have something to do with it. I wanted to flash the new Venom ROM but maybe I will have to stick with TWRP and the stock ROM if I can't get it figured out. Thanks for your help so far I do appreciate it.

I would leave the phone locked.
If you plan on flashing Venom, and you have already flashed twrp, there really is no need to root the current rom. Just make a backup of it in twrp (just in case) and flash Venom. Just make sure you select the correct firmware that matches the phones firmware in the aroma installer.
OK will give that a shot tomorrow thanks
If you're S-OFF. You shouldn't have any issues flashing the latest N firmware for your device, latest TWRP, and then latest N ViperROM. And since Viper comes pre-rooted, you will only need flash ViperROM.
Get a hold if you need some help, I'll do my best to assist.
Andy Bones in May I was asking you about flashing the Viper rom then got sidetracked. Now I would like to do it. I have an HTC 10 I bought that was already S off and locked. I installed TWRP 3.1.0.1 and my firmware is 6.0.1. I tried to flash Viper 10_5.9.0. I use the 6.0.1 button when asked which firmware I want to flash to although the 7. is already checked. Everything installs OK as far as the info page goes but when trying to restart the HTC start screen comes up and the phone just hangs. Reflashed backup and the phone is back to how I got it now. If you can tell me what I am doing wrong that would be great thanks.

My HTC 10 is S-OFF Locked bootloader, this is what Sunshine crew suggests, and works the same (on the 10, previous devices are different) as unlocked bootloader.
It seems you are in a simple bootloop. Would need recovery log to see more, and Viper devs would be able to understand their stuff better than myself.
I do have suggestion as to what I would do.
You are on 6.0.1, you should update to the latest Nougat 2.41.605.18. Either by flashing the firmware, or flashing the RUU. Read up on encryption with Nougat.
Everything you said you did sounds correct to me. And as are as selecting the correct firmware in Aroma, that is for the fingerprint to work, and can easily be fixed if you accidentally select N instead of MM.
I hope this helps in some way.
