[NS4G] 2.3.7 Update (GWK74) - Nexus S General

This is for the Sprint Nexus S 4G (SPH-D720) only.
This includes a radio.
Do not flash this on any other phone.
Here is the official 2.3.5 -> 2.3.7 ota:
http://android.clients.google.com/p...41.signed-sojus-GWK74-from-GRJ90.2e8d4014.zip
This must be flashed in stock recovery over stock 2.3.5 (GRJ90).
You will lose root.
Boot into recovery (hold volumeUp + power).
If you see a yellow triangle, press power + volumeUp.
Select "Install update from sdcard," and select the file you downloaded. (It may be helpful to copy the file from download/ to the root of the sdcard beforehand.)
* * * To update to 2.3.7 / GWK74 without losing root: * * *
If you're rooted with stock recovery, first use this to flash clockworkmod or twrp.
. . . . . (Scroll down to Flash Resulting Output.)
. . . . . (If it shows an error, reboot and try again.)
Boot into recovery.
Install this to get back to stock 2.3.5.
. . . . . (Or if you're already on it, just reflash the boot image.)
Install the 2.3.7 update.
Install superuser.
To keep recovery from being wiped, install leave_the_twrp_alone.
If you're coming from a custom ROM, you might want to wipe dalvik and fix permissions.
Power OFF.
Power on.
Install & run BusyBox Installer.
NOTE: If you had downloaded the modded ota update before noon central time Sept. 20, please flash this to update your kernel if you have wifi problems.
Superuser md5sum: ca9d0de5dcdb54eda50ba66ae502c38c
Leave_the_twrp md5sum: 257e951f898906a864f070b47076729b
GRJ90 boot image md5sum: ccf3b6cace6d2d113c2c2b3e3242b876
The filenames of the ota updates begin with the first 12 characters of their SHA-1 checsums.
Thanks Jorge330823 for posting the update file, from which I was able to extrapolate the original filename and link.
Thanks morfic for the dalvik wiper.
Thanks Bugless Pete for the full boot image.

Ive installed this on my stock NS4G. Im on android 2.3.7 w/ wallet and everything seems to be working ok. Took longer than usual to boot though. Thanks!!!!

Why would you lost root flashing over a stock rom? It doesn't go and remove /bin/su and su apk does it?
I would expect you should be able to flash over a stock rooted rom no problem.
---------- Post added at 11:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:40 AM ----------
I just did the OTA on a rooted stock 2.3.5 (ODEXed) without any troubles. My bootloader is still unlocked and I still have superuser installed afterwards.

It changes the permissions of su from 6755 to 0755. I was under the impression that this would have ill effects.

thanks for the "without losing root" method and the update. i was having issue with wifi error, but the update you posted solved the problem.

Ah, you're right. I didn't actually try to launch an application that required su, and now when I do I see that there are permissions problems. Fortunately the superuser apk is still there and generates a zip file to easily redo it it from recovery.

I feel as if Sprint is the new T-Mobile for Nexus devices and will get the Nexus Prime before anyone else this time around. I think T-Mobile has seen it's days for at least until we find out what happens with them.
Honestly. I think T-Mobile is on it's way out. It was GOING to go to ATT and it would eventually roll over TO ATT. Not stay separate. OR, in case, now, I guess Sprint would be able to get them like they wanted? Where it would make sense for Google to back Sprint first like they have been doing. Or at least Sprint is there go to carrier now as the cheapest stable where T-Mobile is a little shaky I guess.

If anyone is wondering KE1 radio works with 2.3.5. I am running the cm7 kang btw.

Great! I guess Sprint has coverage in Shanghai, where his profile says he is located.
I'll also be switching to Sprint. I imagine their coverage in Greece is outstanding!
Google is shooting itself in the foot with that behavior. They need to change or their policies will eventually shoot back.

You think it's google's choice? I can almost guarantee it's a matter of the carriers not being willing to work with google to get things like full Google Voice integration working on their networks... Google wants their stuff EVERYWHERE, and it needs to be everywhere to succeed. It's the carriers that are afraid of google giving people power to do what they want. Not a single person from a carrier likes the nexus phones. Why? Included tethering out of the box... The carriers don't like Google Voice, why? That one should be obvious, they want to serve you up visual voice mail for themselves (at a charge sometimes). Android includes navigation software like google maps, where as sprint, att, and VZW navigator are paid programs from the carriers with absolutely 0 relevance now that google maps is on phones.
My point is that I can bet it's not google, I can guarantee it's that carriers are scared ****less about the power android gives them and don't want to give google any breathing room. Sprint's in a bad position in America right now so they're giving in and seeing where it gets them.

@snowmanwithahat True! And that's also why at&t, t-mobile and verizon are joining forces to make their own mobile paymant system. But I think that google will win again .

I agree with you in general.
Nevertheless, the problem is IMHO the US phone market.
Operators have unlimited power over your voice and data.
Also, the phone/operator coupling is like a cancer for consumers.
Google should stand its ground with the Nexus line. Nexus phones should be technology demo phones and development tools. Nothing less than that.
Doing nonsense stuff like killing the tethering feature on AT&T Nexus phones, or stopping the updates on the TMO phones is going to shoot back, soon or later.
They have to make a decision soon: The orientation of the Nexus line.
Technology show off and dev tools, or mass market products?
When they have an answer to that question, the Nexus line will start to make sense again.

Does anyone know how to update to 2.3.7 and keep all data/settings? I'm rooted on the stock ROM. Can I just do the OTA? Will I lose root? If I do lose root, will I have to wipe phone and reroot (one click method)?
Please help :/
Problem solved!
Simply follow the first post instructions:
* * * To update to 2.3.7 / GWK74 without losing root: * * *
Boot into ClockworkMod or twrp.
Flash this to get back to stock 2.3.5.
. . . (Or if you're already on it, just reflash the boot image.)
Flash the 2.3.7 update.
Flash superuser.
To keep recovery from being wiped, flash leave_the_twrp_alone.
If you're coming from a custom ROM, you might want to wipe dalvik and fix permissions.
Power OFF.
Power on.
Reinstall BusyBox.

G2 Gingerbread OTA starts today

I found this on T-Mobile's G2 Support Community:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1809
"On July 27, T-Mobile G2 devices will begin to receive an Over-The-Air (OTA) update to Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). The update will roll out to customers in waves over the coming weeks.
The update provides the following enhancements and improvements.
New features:
Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread)
Tell HTC
Google Books added
Notification bar color scheme is changed to black
New battery indicator, phone, and web icons
Color-coded network icon and signal indicator added. Green when connected to Google servers. Grey when not connected.
Pressing the power key while on a call disables the proximity sensor
Fixed or improved issues:
Wi-Fi calling improvements
New SMS and email notification improvements
Improvements to sending MMS from the Gallery
Your phone will show a notification when you have received the update. Alternately, to check if your phone has the update, follow these steps:
From Home screen, press the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Tap About Phone.
Tap System Updates.
Important: Do NOT call T-Mobile to receive the update before September 1. The timeline for receiving the OTA cannot be expedited. T-Mobile cannot manually push the software to customers who ask to receive it.
Software upgrades at retail stores
Beginning August 5, you will be able to go to a T-Mobile retail store to update your T-Mobile G2, T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide, and T-Mobile myTouch 4G to the most recent software version. This helps if you have not gotten the Over-The-Air (OTA) update or if you cannot perform the USB tethered update.
If the OTA or tethered update fail, here is what to expect at the retail store:
Updating at the store can erase all the data on the device. The SD card will not lose data.
Back up your data, synchronize your contacts to Google or T-Mobile Backup, and write down the names of all the applications you will want to re-install.
The update can take up to 30 minutes to complete.
The update requires that your phone has over 50% battery life at the store.
The rep at the retail store will:
Remove your personal SD card.
Insert a software update SD card.
Wait for the update to download and install on the device.
Remove the software update SD card.
Insert your personal SD card again."
Excited for 2.3 - stock is fantastic. The only issue remains that I need root to run VPN Connections for work. So close! Thanks for posting.
If you get the OTA and are reading this (or have read it), please post back your region and when you got the OTA.
thanks!!
Yay for you stock people! Will give you guys a nice fresh device.

this will be my first android phone getting a OTA update, some questions.
-If my phone is rooted, will I need to root again?
-Will all the system settings revert to default?
thanks
Can anyone confirm whether or not this is the same update that was leaked in May?
I am running Build 2.13.531.8 CL56018.

The location of the person never mattered, it's completely random based on EMEI or some such.
I am just waiting for someone to post the direct link so I can manually update the G2 my wife inherited from me.
i was about to say the same thing, location DOES NOT matter in the least. I think it's partly first-come, first served based on check-in (*#*#CHECKIN#*#* to force it) and also IMEI based too. But most importantly, I also would like to see the manual update ZIP, as well as the version.
Don't worry about rooting 2.3.3 we've already done that, and it's great that the G2 is seeing a update for those stock users
I want to stay rooted with my GB CM nightly. It is really close to perfection, and now since Netflix is working smooth as butter, there is no reason to change. Since im running the latest nightly, would I see something that I would click to download?

Samsung Nexus S 4G updated to support Google Wallet

Samsung Nexus S 4G updated to support Google Wallet
This has been posted on Engadget
"It looks like the rumors are true, folks -- the long-awaited update that brings Google Wallet to the Samsung Nexus S 4G on Sprint is indeed here, just two days shy of missing the "summer" deadline completely. We're pretty scant on details at the moment, but the announcement has shown up on an official FAQ page on Samsung's site informing us that build GWK74 is available. If you're a proud owner of the now fully-functional device, you should receive a notification stating that an update is available to deliver the goods via an OTA refresh. We're not sure how long it will take for this to get pushed out to everyone, so a bit of patience may need to be exercised here as you wait. Let us know if you're one of the lucky recipients below."
Has anyone else seen or heard about this yet? Is this different from when this was posted on Sprints site? Will it actually be rolled out now?
Samsung
Sprint update page shows nothing.
No update on my 4G yet.
FOTA_CANCEL is the harshest of messages at times like these.

I'm sure someone will post the APK soon, but given that it requires NFC Secure Element support, it might have to wait for a similar OS update to enable it on the non-Sprint models. Time will tell.

The access to the SE has been in AOSP since 2.3.5. If you have a pure AOSP or other custom rom based off of AOSP you should have access to the SE. If you are running stock 2.3.4 you won't though.

My Nexus is Rooted, but otherwise completely stock. Too bad it's on T-Mo!
i'm a Nexus S 4g user, and mine is rooted too, but i'm running a custom rom. figures though, i guess tailsthecar3 is right. I'll need to have a stock system. i WAS on a stock rooted rom, and it looks like i'll have to wait for a new rom release with the next build.
lol GO SPRINT! (not really)
i just flashed back to stock, got a 22MB update and it's rebooting and installing now. will edit post later once i get the chance to play with it
I tried updating my stock rooted to the grj22 or whatever...I didnt have the stock apps in /system cause i deleted them, like books, google earth, etc. I wanted to try to update even though I knew I needed the stock /system. I put the stock recovery on it but because the update couldnt find the original files, the update failed.

is there a way to manually download el30- sprint?

OK, a long time ago, I did a manual update on my EPIC 4g (sprint). I am thinking that is why I am unable to download the update through the setting tab a week after the update came out. I know everyone has it now. I have no idea what update I did on my phone last year... but I havnt been able to get firmware updates from sprint since them. I'd kinda like to have this one.
Does anyone know of a link that has this update, I can load to my SD card and execute on the phone? I just want to be able to reboot to the new ROM, I dont want to have to hook up to a PC and load it that way. I need a rookie, easy way to do this.
Thanks!!!
You most likely have either rooted or removed at least 1 pre-installed application. That would cause the EL30 update not to install. You can find the .zip file in both the General and Development forums.
If you have rooted or removed any pre-installed apps, then the stock .zip file won't install for you. You would need to make sure you're on a custom kernel for your current build (most likely EC05 or EI22), get CWM 5 installed and then install one of the near stock roms in the Dev forum.
Yea, it was so long ago, I dont know if it is rooted or not? I have been away from this stuff for quite a while and have completely lost touch. CW5? is that an app that I can install directly from the SD card? Also, does the dev forum have ROM's that I can install from SD as well? - sorry for all the questions!

Go to your Settings > About Phone to see what your baseband, kernel and OS build are.
Yes the dev forum has kernels and roms available for you to flash. Google search "QBKing77 youtube channel" to get how-to videos for doing everything.
Baseband = your modem version. This is completely independent of your kernel and OS and can be a different version from those two.
Kernel & OS build = these must match in build #. Example would be EC05, EI22 and EL30. Some custom kernel's do not include the build # on the About Phone screen, but stock would.
CWM = ClockworkMod Recovery. This is a custom recovery tool that allows you to flash custom roms, kernels, mods and themes.
Easiest way to see if you're rooted is to look for the application Superuser in your application list. If it's there, then you're most likely rooted.
is there a way to unroot this handset and allow the sprint update to come thru? If not, what is the name of a good (stock) gingerbread ROM? There are a ton of them over on the dev side and honestly I dont want to mess with he clockwork stuff. Im kinda pinched for time.
I did find the CWM5 zip - i assume i can run that directly from the SD card, then apply the new ROM.
no superuser... know that I think back, I dont think I did root it. But I dont know why else the carrier update wont work?
ok, I just looked @ the current version(s).
BASEBAND: d700.0.55.DK28
KERNAL:2.6.32.9
BUILD: FROYO.DK28
so, what is going to be the easiest way to get this to EL30?
I am almost done bothering you guys - I promise!
Odining the el30 stock package and flashing an ec05 modem and then flashing the ec05 to el30 delta
Ill offer to do it for you in a little over 15 minutes if you'd like via teamviewer

Another good idea is to google Qbking77 youtube videos. He has a video for just about everything you need to update your phone.

Note 2 - 4.3 Update coming soon:

Well instead of me writing, here is the link:
http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/galaxy_s4s3note_2_getting_4_3_gear_support_in_the_coming_weeks.html
I hope someone can leak out the final built for the n7105 section... I live in Australia, if America is getting it in a couple of weeks it means I'm getting it in a couple of years so we would appreciate the leak once it's released.

This is the update schedule for American carriers. Does that mean that unlocked phones will get it sooner? I hope so. I only just bought the note 2 (Best decision ever) and would love it to be running on 4.3 ASAP.

I live in Brizzy too and I'll second or third that if its the only way we can get it? Sorry for the possibly stupid question, but is it true that if you have rooted and installed a custom rom, then you won't get the push update from your carrier anyway?... so.... the only way to get 4.3 on my (and I assume your rooted phone) is via custom rom download?

or if you go back to stock.
have issues with the ota updater as soon as i root my device. The moment i do that i get the message that my device has been changed and i cannot use the updater then. if i flash stock withouth root i don't have this issue.
reckon its best to make a backup of your apps with TB or any similar program when the official update is available, then flash back stock (no root) and update, afterwards simply restore your normal (non-system) apps and your ready
I'm in Aus too, but the official story (courtesy of Telstra) is that there won't be any updates as of JB 4.1.2, unless there's sufficient backlash ...

To answer you and the gentleman above... Australia will probably be the last country on earth to get the update as usual. So we might have to reside to getting it of some kind developer who uploads it here somewhere.
If you do wish to get updates you should go back to stock firmware (probably the first backup you made for your telstra 4.1.2) doesn't matter if it's rooted. Connect your phone to the PC and have KIES installed. Click update firmware and update (done, it will automatically unroot your phone and put back the stock recovery). You can easily update after that.
If anyone finds any android 4.3 working please update us here as soon as you can with a link to the page. If I find a working ROM for the official android 4.3 TW ROM I'll post it here too.
I don't think Aussie tel companies will well I don't have high hopes when it comes to Samsung I've always had HTC and Samsung and it's always the same get f all. I'm using 4.3.1 carbon I use GMD spen features for spen control and gestures don't use stock Sammy apps anyway.. just the 4.3 would be good because it's smooth as

Well now...I've been holding off playing with rooting my phone (as I'm new to 'droid and have an awful lot to learn, but have come a LONG way in 2 weeks) as I was expecting Telstra to release an update. Since that appears NOT to be forthcoming, Ill consider the various root options, none of which are particularly appealing at the moment mainly as it seems no-one has a stock ROM for this phone online and I can't backup mine without root. Catch 22 it seems. Information on locked bootloaders, Telstra ROM mods, rooting the 7105 "T" version is VERY limited
So...if anyone happens to have a link for a ROM copy please let me know.
(Or info on a rooting technique that works)
Ultimately every one on xda will be using the custom 4.3 rom for the note 3 goodies because Samsung will not be releasing those features in it's official release

Okay I will explain what I done for you...
When I first rooted my Galaxy Note 2 in May, I was a new-comer to android, I had an iPhone for a long time. What I done was root my phone, I Odin installed TWRP after rooting because I really don't like CWM (those are the names of the 'recoveries' available), they will replace the default Samsung recovery. Just make sure you get TWRP. I think it's up to TWRP 2.6.3
Well yeah let's get back to the topic, as soon as I rooted I used TWRP to make a backup of my default Telstra ROM (completely with EFS, MODEM, basically tick everything you can possibly backup).
I took that backup and put it on my laptop and on my PC and I kept a copy on my external card the whole time. That was the best idea, any time I ever had any problems with my phone I went back to that backup. I even soft bricked my phone once and after hours of panicking I realised I can just Re-install the default backup, and it fixed my phone.
Oh and I just recently un-rooted my phone to check for updates. All I done was use SuperSU to do an UNROOT. Then went into recover, restored the original backup I made of the Telstra ROM. Plugged my phone into the PC, and used Samsung KIES to check for firmware update. It just restarted my phone, removed TWRP recovery, re-installed the samsung one, and it removed the root completely and I'm basically went back to my original telstra ROM. I can go into settings and check for updates and everything. (I can confirm there is no update as of yet).
AS for your other QUESTION.
ALL THE ROMS in the N7105 Section will WORK with your N7105T Model. It's the same thing. JUST WATCH OUT and make sure you never install N7100 ROMS (They will soft-brick and could hard-brick your phone).
Thanks for the input.
I've been considering between 3, namely CF AutoRoot, Galaxy Note Toolkit And (exploit based) Framaroot, with a bias towards Toolkit so far ( as it specifies the 7105 "T" variant).
But if you've actually ODINed a GT-7105T (Telstra) with CWP without issues, I'll certainly consider that.
Any one else care to chime in on this (if you've done the same phone/telco only though !)
I've come far enough to understand rooting, boot processes, CWM/TWRP, exploits AND the importance of picking the exact model !
I'll take the plunge when I get enough input to decide.

It's not that hard really, you can't really mess it up if you follow the instructions... Hey root it whichever way you see fit, whatever you think is easier for you, don't listen to me. But I do highly recommend you get TWRP for backing up and formatting and installing your ROMS. Also I recommend PAC-MAN it's a good ROM, but it's not very stable at the moment (kind of).

Don't take offense at my asking for multiple inputs. I just don't want to brick at $600 phone needlessly
I've now sourced a ROM from Sammobile and downloaded it last night.
I'm backing up settings and stuff tonight and will run with Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit tomorrow (I went PRO) and go for option 3 - THE LOT !
Hopefully it'll all go ok.

I I'm currently living in US

So my question is, since I don't have any backup or anything, can someone provide me with the steps to get me started? Like what post to root it on this specific carrier and how everything? please
Thanks

Of course we can get your started but see
But first you must answer us these question three.
Why do you want root?
Do you have a computer? (This is a must for root.)
Are you ready to be disappointed?

follow this (use odin to flash rooted kernel) ......you should search before posting things like this.....google is your friend bro.
GOOD LUCK - BTW use flash fire app in play store to make backups and flash roms
Okay okay.
A quick glance at T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion would have led you to the "How to root the S7 EDGE" thread.

Well while I was waiting I just rooted it. So what do you think that would be the next step towards installing a rom? To answer your survey questions  :
1- Because a phone without being rooted is like a bird without wins.
2- I do
3- Oh well... tell me more

Well then.
Rooting the phone (as I'm sure you had already found out) was fairly easy.
BUT... since we do not have an unlocked bootloader then we cannot have any custom recovery. Which means we can only (for now) use adb and Fireflash to flash any custom firmwares. And while we're on the subject of that... there is only one custom rom. Well... technically there are two but only one for you since you updated to the latest firmware.
Echoe ROM which was updated (ummm...) September 9th (not including the Verizon version which might work but with no promises)
Tekxv2 which was updated back in July. Unfortunately, that is flashed by adb (computer required) and only supports G935TUVS3APD8 which is... pretty old.
Things that you may notice with root.
Battery life may be shorter.
Strange icons on your status bar.
Might start to have random reboots for absolutely no reason.
Can't use Samsung Pay and some other apps.
Phone might be laggy.
Phone might feel hot.
Some of those can be resolved by flashing the only custom rom that we have (Echoe ROM... which is a rather nice rom) but it's not "there" yet.
Or you can use the guide in my signature to resolve issues like the lag and the strange icons. Yet even after the "fix" you might still experience both again from time to time.
You might even have the IMS force close issue which I used to get about once a month. It would piss me off because no sooner that you click the button, it'll pop up again and you don't have time to do anything. You're pretty much forced to reflash stock, wipe, re-root, restore a latest backup... which can take hours and is rather inconvenient if it happens to you while you're at work like it always seemed to happen for me.
SO...
All in all... root is okay. It's better than nothing I suppose. But until we get more developer support for this phone then in my opinion it's kinda pointless in my opinion.
Too many drawbacks. I eventually unrooted two weeks ago and I love my phone now. I'm using the heck out of Samsung Pay especially since their promotions are pretty nice right now! Plus a few members are testing the Nouget update which probably won't be getting root at all since rooting requires an engineering kernel which we don't have and might not get. Or an unlocked bootloader which we've pretty much given up on.
A lot of members that are testing the Nouget beta firmware are extremely satisfied with it so if we can't root Nouget then having a rooted S7 will probably fade away as more people update to Android 7+. That's where I see this going anyway.

So for what I understood the dev support for this phone is very limited... I know the issues I may encounter, I had them with the galaxy note. but any way... If something I'll unroot it but I want to try it out Thank for you time. I've rooted it.
EDIT: Damn... I really don't like the visual style of Echoe... is that one the only one I can flash??

How are you doing with the ads? Like youtube, pandora, spotify? I just put up with them.
In all reality, I don't use my phone for the purposes that require my viewing of ads to begin with.
Sure when I was rooted I had adblocker. But honestly, I had completely forgotten all about that benefit of being rooted until now.
I suppose if you absolutely need to be rid of ads then by all means, retain root. However ads don't effect my daily use one bit.

You're probably trying to flash a firmware with a V3 bootloader over G935TTMB4APK1.
If you were seriously following that (outdated) guide step by step then you tried flashing TMB_G935TUVU3APG1.zip over a PK1 firmware. Yeah... that doesn't work.
Download the latest firmware from sammmobile.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G935T/
Try it again.
IF that doesn't work... try using Smart Switch.
I haven't done it before but I think it's the Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.

You should flash everything.
BL= Bootloader (which should be V4 since you updated to the latest firmware already. Anything less than V4 will fail.)
AP= Is for System, Cache, kernel, etc.
CP= Is for modems
CSC is for your HOME_CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 file.
Important! If you use the CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 (doesn't have the word "HOME" in the name) then it'll wipe your phone!
If your phone still says "CUSTOM" on it then make sure that reboot and check again. If it still says custom then make sure that you don't still have the engineering kernel. Re-flash the AP files again if so. It shouldn't though if it's 100% stock. Also note if you saw the unlocked padlock on the S7 Edge splash screen (before the bootanimation).
Good luck and happy New Year.
