USB OTG Storage

I have the 8GB Nexus 7 so the storage obviously suffers when storing games like real racing 2 at 1.5GB and I had an idea to use a USB OTG device coupled with a card reader for added storage however I'm not sure if this would work how I hope. I've heard that card readers work with the Nexus 7 so that's fine but I was wondering if it were possible to store app data, eg the 1.5GB data for real racing 2, on that SD card (with the app on the N7) and it still work, and if it does work, how do I go about it?

Anyone?

Search feature, use it (try USB-OTG).
Root and stickmount required for USB storage capability.
And someone's probably answered the app thing too.

Nexus sometimes freezes when connected to external HD and OTG cable

As the title says sometimes when I try and move files from the Nexus to my external HD using OTG cable and stickmount pro the Nexus will just freeze up and i have to disconnect the OTG cable and restart the Nexus, the files I'm trying to move are all less than 500MB so i cant understand why this is happening, anyone any assistance?

Are you using an external hd with its own power source? There may not be enough current to maintain the hd during large transfers.
Use an OTG cable with stickmount pro, all my files show up shortly after connecting and i have transfered music on the Nexus but probably one around 150MB max, the problem seems to be when I go and move files around 500MB it looks as if it is transferring but the screen goes dark and won't turn back on, and I have to take the OTG cable out and reboot the Nexus

I have come to the conclusion that I need a better OTG cable, maybe the one I have isn't powerful enough, I cannot think of anything else, unless anyone else has any tips?

Already installed drivers for the N4? Using correct data cable?
Even tried wireless solutions as air droid?
But before you do all these things, is your N4 visible in your pc- explorer?
For further questions just contact me. I'm willing to support you.
Try rebooting. That's what fixed it for me lol. You could also try changing USB Storage mode to PTP or MTP from whatever it's on now.

Had the same problem. I was able to connect it as a camera, but not in mtp mode. I moved all my files into the dcim folder under then used root explorer to get them out of there.

+1 for AirDroid. So simple and reliable that even my 70 year old father uses it.

I use FolderSync. I have it scheduled to automatically back up anything I care about every night at 2am. It just happens and I don't even have to think about it. AirDroid also works fine.

That sounds awesome! but I guess you have to leave your computer ON all night, ain't that right?
I just use ES File Explorer and just transfer them to my Windows shared folder on my network. I rarely use USB cables to transfer files at home unless they're massive.

I connect mine all the time to my windows 7 PC. You have to remember that it connects as an MTP device so it doesn't get assigned a drive letter but it should show up as a device that you can explore.
I use Windows 8 and I use the USB to transfere files between the SD Card and the Laptop.
Connect your phone up to pc while booted into android. Now check your PC's device manager for a failed mtp entry.
If you find one I'll tell you how to fix it.

Accessing external hard drive?

I was just wondering if anyone knows if accessing my external hard drive will be possible with my Note 3 when I get it? I have a externally powered western digital hard drive I would like to transfer files back and forth between! Is this possible and if so don't I need anything special to download this? Thanks in advanced......

You will need a micros usb otg adaptor lead and you will probably have to use exfat disc format as I doubt that the Note3 will read NTFS discs without additional drivers that may require root.

Well I have the hard drive formated to fat32 as I have it hooked up to my xbox 360 so will that be OK also I forgot to mention the hard drive cable input is mini usb does that mean I have to get a cable adapter?

I don't actually own an Android device at this point, but if my searching is correct, Fat32 should work.. but take that with a grain of salt.
As for the cable, yes, you will need an adapter. But I have a question.. what kind of HDD did you buy that has mini usb input..
Just use wifi file Explorer. I use that to transfer batch files all the time. Easiest way if you're not familiar.

The hard drive is not connected to any pc only to my xbox 360 is this still possible? And i have had the hard drive for about 4 or 5 years now its a Western Digital 1 terabyte.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well wifi file Explorer hosts your phone on the router, going to the browser on your xbox gives you a Web based file explorer which you can then select files to copy to your device so I don't see why not.

Paragon has a tool on the play store to work with ntfs if you ever need that. It's pretty seamless. I use an otg adapter with a ntfs drive once a week at least on my note 2. Requires root though.

Resurrecting an old thread...
It works for me, I have a WD Elements 500GB external bus powered HDD - don't need a power adapter or anything. It's formatted FAT32 and partitioned - one 150GB and that's what I'm using to back up my device - the other I'm using for extra storage. Only the first partition shows up in File Explorer on my Note 3.
Don't need to be rooted for it to work, contrary to what's been stated elsewhere on the 'net.
Hope this helps - or that you have gotten it working since posting. Good luck!
Take care,
Scott

It works fine with teamviewer
@brokmaker @gsmyth He is not talking about remote desktop solutions. He is asking for an application that makes your tablet into a second monitor for your computer. iDisplay is one of the only alps that does this.

Got it
i found a solution for this problem. i'm running windows 8 and idisplay would only mirror my screen. This is what i did:
go to screen resolution(right mouse button on desktop) and press detect. In my case 2 additional monitors popped up. turn one of these screens on and extend your main monitor. you only have to do this once!!
next start your teamviewer app on your tablet and connect to your laptop/pc. it should detect the monitor you just created so now you can switch to it. thats it. perhaps not the best solution but i couldn't think of something else and trust me i've tried.
about the performance... for me its just as good as idisplay or even better
and a bonus tip i want to share. install connectify on your laptop/pc and connect to your personal hotspot with your tablet. this wil speed things up quite a bit.
