The screen is a fingerprint magnet ! - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Is it just me? The screen is just a fingerprint magnet, even a slight use will have fingerprints all over, looks so bad, need to constantly clean up the screen. And same goes for the rear of the tab as well. How you guys manage with this problem?

Just wipe the screen here and than... Its glass what do you expect? Even iPad has this problem, although you don't see this at the beginning due to Apple's magic and wizardry messing up with your brain and perception...

I deal with it by getting a screen protector. It's a good way to get rid of the prints as well as protect your screen from any scratches.
I also got a vinyl backing for my tab to stop the prints from showing up on there too.

Usually aren't screen protectors are even worse finger print magnets?
Can you tell more about the vinyl backing?

The samsung galaxy tablet has a fingerprint resistant coating. If you think this is bad you should try any of the other tablets. They get so smudgy you cant even see through the screens.
The google i/o tab does not have ths coating. The only other tablet i know of that has it is the ipad.
Putting a screen protector over a fingerprint resistant screen is a huge waste of technology in my opinion. Not only are you ruining the screens ability to prevent smudging, but you are also affecting the display quality.

Yes, the screen does get a tad messy. A bit more than my iPads, definitely. However, I can't really notice the smudges unless the screen is completely off, so it doesn't bother me much.

Yeah, you notice it with the screen off but not when it's in use, so it doesn't really bother me.

Yeah, it drives me nuts. I deal with it by cursing a lot and taking out my frustrations on other people.

So your galaxy tab which has the same glass by the same manufacture with the same oleophobic coating, is getting more smudges than your apple product?
Maybe youre eating french fries when using your 10.1?

Yes, they were extra careful with the iPad orders and just did a rush job with the Samsungs coz they figured like most other stuff the Android crowd will paint it on themselves if its not included by the manufacturer / Google.

No, but you made me feel hungry now.

the tab 10.1, and the ipad2 do not have the same glass or the same oleophobic coating, and definitely not by the same manufacturer either.
tab 10.1 uses gorilla glass by corning, with their own type of smudge 'resistant' coating.

Par for the course with touchscreens. If it is a huge bother you can get an anti-glare screen protector but those mute the colors and I really dislike them (and screen protectors in general).

I wash my hands a lot more often since owning touch screen devices.

Lol, lousy 581st post. Apple was NOT the first to start using Gorilla Glass with the iPhone 4. The Droid/Milestone used it starting in 2009, and the SGS launched with it months before the iPhone 4 release.
Apple stopped using Corning's product when they launched the iPad. The glass they use has similar properties, but is cheaper for Apple.
And the oleophobic coating they use has always been of their own design, not something that is inherent with Gorilla Glass.

Gorilla glass on EVO?

I haven't seen any mention of this but as the Droid & Dell Mini 5 Streak have it, any confirmation yeah or nay on it for the EVO?
-Go check out the Dell Streak's Gorilla Glass screen: torture tested for your amusement (video) at Engadget if you haven't seen it..I'll link as soon as I'm allowed as a new user here
don't think Evo has gorilla glass

Too afraid to try stabbing mine with a pen to see!
Too bad Gorilla glass looks awesome, I'd love the EVO to have it..
Was thinking of trying the "Ultimate Screen Guard - Anti Glare" at seidioonline.com-not that it would compare to gorilla glass, Seido products any good?
Kinda cool, i think all phones with a screen bigger then 4inchs should have some type of new screens
heres the link for those that havent seen it Dell Streaks Gorilla Glass Test: By Engadget
That would be pretty awesome on the Evo. Even if it cost an additional $100 (I'm hoping it'd be that cheap) I'd even be willing to have it done aftermarket if that were possible. Kinda like how colorware offers their service
I asked about this in the Q & A forum a while back. It seems that none of the HTC phones are equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass. I still would like to know if the glass that is installed on the EVO has an oleo-phobic coating. That question I just can't find an answer for. HTC is capable of this as the Hero has the coating. The coating made cleaning the screen on my iPhone 3GS soooo easy!
I have the Hero..
I am not sure if it has the Gorilla glass, but it is damn tough!
I have see test on youtube that show it's resistant to scratches. I have tested it out with keys.
Here is a vid with HD2. I say if not gorilla glass, it has something that is the same!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcEaehKWr2s&feature=related
now.. that said.. it is made of Glass and Glass in of itself, is a high scratch resistant material. what i wonder, how does it do against SHATTERING? I have dropped my hero a few times on hard surfaces and it does not show any evidence.
The gorilla glass is great, however, I still managed to somehow get a tiny scratch on my Droid's screen - and I'm anally careful with my phones. If the EVO doesn't have the gorilla glass, I may have to put on a screen protector, which I generally dislike.
I had my iPhone 3GS for almost a year and never had a screen protector or any scratches. Glass is hard to scratch. It has to be something harder than glass to scratch...like diamond. Glass is a "7" on the Mohs scale...diamond is a "10". Quartz, Topaz and something called Corundum are 7, 8 and 9. So, the odds of scratching glass are pretty slim unless you accidently hit it with a ring.
Sand will also screw your phone to hell and back, my friend took his iPhone to a bonfire we went to this week, I didn't touch my Hero all night but he was mingling with his iPhone a lot. He took out his phone the next day to see a bunch of minute scratches everywhere, whereas mine had nothing. Needless to say he was pissed. haha
Yeah, I can see sand scratching glass. Sand is used in making glass. My phone will never be in the sand, but I can see that.
Yeah shattering is the bigger functional concern, also on the 3GS I put the Power Support Anti-Glare to make the screen viewable in sunlight, easier to use with sweaty fingers & minimize fingerprints, so far it's been well worth the expense & for the EVO was considering http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/spm2hev4.htm, can someone vouch for it or recommend something comparable?

Did the same thing to my Zune HD, so now i'm just waiting for martin fields to make a screen protector for the evo. I've used them on a razr v3, TP1 and TP2, looks and feels just like the stock screens.
The good screen protectors - the ones you install with a liquid - are very rubbery. However, this isn't going to have an effect on shattering, which I agree is the bigger risk than scratching.

I don't know if the screen on the HTC Hero is the same as the one on the Evo but I've had that thing without any protectors and no scratches. I had a Droid for 30 days (Google IO gift), and that thing already has a scratch. I've been extra careful with that thing knowing that I'm going to sell it and it still got a scratch on it. From the looks of that youtube video, I hope the Evo is the same cause I don't like using screen protectors.

[Q] Gorilla Glass?

Anyone know how scratch resistant the Epic's screen will be?
If its weak, I'd like to manually try and replace it with Gorilla Glass.
Manually replacing the glass sounds kind of risky!
You should realize that gorilla glass and products like it are much more brittle than standard glasses. While it can with stand scratches, it doesn't favor well in drops and impacts to it. Why not just use an invisible shield or other protector? Much cheaper and easier.
Trying to replace a screen that's made for the phone with a screen that's NOT made for the phone isnt gonna be easy or pretty.
when it comes to a drop/impact that would shatter or splinter the screen, it either will or won't. Having a case and protector on the screen helps. But if its from more than 2 feet, most likely the screen will shatter regardless of the type of glass.
My Hero has survived far more of its fair share of 5 foot falls onto asphalt with only minimal scuffing to the plastic case, there are no screen cracks, and no screen scratches either. If the Epic 4G is anything similar, it should be fine with both. Although I would like to note that, at least for me I would worry more about problems with the keyboard after the phone has been dropped, as was the case with my Touch Pro. Just my 1.9 cents.

One of the benefits of super amoled is that the screen is attached to the plastic/glass cover. It eliminated the dust and glare problems but it would most likely be impossible to replace it.

One of the great things about the HTC "chin" phones is that it's impossible to directly impact the screen on a flat surface like a floor or sidewalk without completely breaking the phone open. That's how it is on my G1, at least. Say what you will about the aesthetics, but I find that to be fantastic practical design.
When I went to the T-Mobile store to see their version, they intentionally dropped it and banged the screen HARD like 5 times to demonstrate how tough it was. Not a scratch. I wouldn't worry about screen durability.

Does the Samsung Focus Really Have Cornings Gorilla Glass?

I heard that the Samsung Focus had corning gorilla glass and hearing this I decided a screen protector wouldn't be needed (gorilla glass is supposed to be scratch resistant isn't it?). I'm the type of person who takes extra steps to protect his gadgets. I always hold my phone with a firm grip, I have a dedicated pocket for it (no keys or coins with it) and I never drop it. Recently I've noticed some scratches appearing on the front screen of my Focus. Most of them aren't very noticeable, but one in particular can be seen plain as day and is infuriating. Like I said, I don't have anything in my pockets, I've never dropped it and I want to know how these scratches appear on "scratch resistant" glass if nothing but my fingers and cloth are touching it.
If the Focus doesn't have the gorilla glass/gorilla glass isn't scratch resistant I will delete this thread in shame of my lack of knowledge
the zune HD has gorilla glass and I have a zune and a focus. I am reasonably sure the focus isnt gorilla glass, taps like plastic and scratches relatively easy. my zune has very little scratches after 8 months of abuse sharing pockets w/ keys; only one day with my focus in my pocket with my wallet i have scratches.
It does really seem like plastic. Or maybe really thin, versatile glass.
I asked Samsung via twitter on November 9th and they confirmed it
"the Focus does have Gorilla Glass. Thanks for reaching out to us, we're happy to help. ^Sab"
Just found this and it says the Samsung Focus does have gorilla glass.
http://www.samsung.com/us/article/get-to-know-the-samsung-focus-with-windows-phone-7
Is it possible I got a bad unit? Or is it possible Samsung is just using the weakest gorilla glass?
EDIT: Dang, same time post
Samsung claims that the Focus has Gorilla Glass, so I guess you can just take their word for it. The Gorilla Glass might be underneath the plastic layer Samsung used. I think the Vibrant and European Galaxy S are the same way.
Here's a link to Samsung's official site Q&A about the Focus and if you scroll down you'll find that they confirmed it has Gorilla Glass. Click here. Also an official SamsungUSA rep on Twitter confirmed Gorilla Glass when he was asked. Click here.
Also, if you want to see a stress test of the Galaxy S' Gorilla Glass, check out this video (not in English but you get the gist of it). Click here.
I bought a silicone case for it and for now I don't have a screen protector but things are going fine for me. The phone probably isn't bulletproof and considering how thin the Gorilla Glass is on the Focus it will do an exceptional job stopping the usual accidents but it won't stop anything more serious. But since you're an 'extra protection' kind of guy you should just get the screen protector and give yourself some peace of mind lol.

The Focus's screen really feels like plastic. It's just not as solid as, say, the iPhone 4 (which is said to use Gorilla glass for the front.) Gorilla glass is supposed to be scratch-proof and you scratched it in a day? Hmm...
I do not have a case or a screen protector on my Focus and don't have a single scratch on the screen and only a few micro scuffs on the plastic battery cover. I am generally careful with my gadgets, but I have carried this phone with me every day since Nov 8th and both of my young children play with it on a regular basis, and still nothing. Thankfully I have not dropped it screen side down on any hard surfaces (knock on wood)!

I can tell you from personal experience that a Focus screen will not survive a 3 foot fall on its face to concrete. And it is very very much made of glass.
But it seems relatively scratch resistant : )
Have you guys seen the youtube video of a guy testing out the glass screen of the focus? He's literally stabbing the phone with a screwdriver and smacking it with the handle and there was no scratches on the phone afterwards.

It's supposed to be extremely hard to scratch, even with a razor blade. The iPhone is practically invincible when it comes to keys and the like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXlriABfOo . It's a good watch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8yNh0N2qbs . This video too is essential for discussions like this. Basically, to scratch the iPhone's glass, you need something that's harder than the glass they used. So diamonds might scratch it. Metal, not so much.
If this guy's Samsung Focus's screen went to hell after one pocket session, methinks the Gorilla glass they used was made in Chinese ghettos.

I'm not lying, I have no reason to be. I've also had the phone for about a week (and a half) and I think I might have actually dropped it once on the rubber foot mat of a car, but that was only like a 2 foot drop and it was rubber. I'm still perplexed as to how this scratch got on my Focus. I have some other little "soft" scratches, but those you can't see unless the screen is turned off and its at the right angle. The one I'm referring to is small, but when I use my Focus outside you can notice it (even on the black theme). I tried taking a picture, but it wouldn't come out.
Would it be possible to exchange it for another Focus at AT&T if I'm still in my 30 day trail period?

You'd have to talk to them, but I doubt it. Usually physical wear and tear isn't really covered. But couldn't you return it and then buy another one?
I'm assuming you got the scratch when the phone landed screen-down on the floor mat of the car. There are usually tiny rocks and some are bound to be more solid than the glass, thus the tiny scratch. So 'unlucky' then, I suppose.

Using the S-pen on a naked screen

I don't have a screen protector on my Note since they tend to hinder the brilliant display (the clear ones retain too many fingerprints for my liking), but as a result I must be extra careful when handling the phone.
I haven't gotten any scratches yet, but I'm always nervous about using the S-pen on a naked screen. Has anyone out there had any problems with S-pen scratches, or am I just being too paranoid?
Thanks in advance, guys.
I've used my Note both with and without screen protector now, and in both cases it really feels like you're scratching the screen. You get the feeling it's sharp pen or something, but when you carefully examine the S-Pen you'll notice that it's rounded and not sharp at all. I don't think it'll get your screen scratched, because that would produce a lot of complaints.
My Note doesn't have any scratches yet, and I've used the pen quite alot. So I don't think you have to worry as long as the S-Pen is in good state.
No, you should not worry about the s pen scratching the screen.
I use the SGP Steinheil ultra olephobic. If you get a good application, you cannot see it and it really does cut down on finger and face oils.
Using the S pens is just like writing on the screen!

That's correct, because I've had devices in the past where some type of particle must have gotten between the stylus and the screen, and I ended up with minor scratches that were very annoying. Granted, this was years ago before phones had fortified glass, but I was just asking to get other people's advice/opinions.
you should always check that the tip of the pen is clean but since you seem to share my paranoia you probably do that already.
there is no way that a clean plastic tip can scratch glass, ANY glass
not the gorilla discussion again :-(
/Jeriz
I agree with Jeriz.
I too am very cautious about the screen and i dont like screen protectors so im just careful. Just wipe the pen tip each time you get it out and should be fine. I only use it occasionally anyway.
Yes it does have gorilla glass ffs
I've done some nasty little scratch by pen, so don't tell me it can't be done.
I was very careful about Note but 1 particle of sand, and I have a scratch.
Screen protector is necessary.

but it was the contaminants on the tip and not the plastic itself. nobody here said that some random grain of unknown material can't scratch the screen. that's exactly like saying that "my car was all shiny and new but it only took one key to scratch the paint" for all we know it could have been a micro diamond
im prepared to say that if you take the (clean) plastic tip of the pen and try to scratch the screen the pressure required will crack the screen long before your able to make any scratcmarks.
careful or not doesn't seem to matter. most scratches seem to be caused by very small particles judging by how many people who says they get scratches even tho they nursed the phone like a newborn baby. based on that i believe that IF the note is more prone to scratches it's simply due to larger screen area
and you can't say that screen protection is necessary for everyone. it might be your preference but i don't like the way they feel or the way they distort the screen
im not trying to attack you im simply disagreeing with everything you said

Love that!
BTW, the exact same issue is far more possible wit grit attached to your finger. It is less likely to scratch, however, because you do not use so much pressure (more area).
What it does do, however, is cause the protector to get covered with thousands of tiny scratches. Now, that affects the display.
As soon as I get one of my preferred cases, I am taking my protector off. I shall then have a much better looking Note. I do hope it will be for a long time, but you never can tell.

It's already been mentioned, but here's a bit of a proof of the existence of GG on the Note

Screen scratches super easy gorilla glass is a lie!

Haven't dropped my phone and handle it as if it were my child. I have three hairline scratches on the screen from setting it on a counter[face down]and picking it up to see activenotifications. Disappointed with the build quality moto!

Are the scratches on the actual screen surface or on the front lip of the phone? From my experience the front lip area is very sensitive to fine scratches (though not very noticeable) but the screen itself is pretty resistant. This is a bit extreme, but worth checking out too --

That's odd considering the screen doesn't touch a surface when you lay it face down. There are small lips at the top and bottom of the phone to keep the screen slightly elevated. Are you sure it wasn't caused by dust/sand/grit in your pocket?
Usually use a screen protector but haven't found a nice one yet. Its on the actual screen. Goes right through my keyboard. Will take pics soon

Usually I'd mark it down to pocket sand but it happened while on a desk. Set it down, went to bathroom and came back it was scratched.
It sits like a nexus in a desk but I think it might have been from the mouse pad I had it on.

Gorilla glass scratches all the time, something like a grain of sand can scratch it.

That's because sand is one of the toughest materials. Yes, tougher than a steel knife.
It will be a great day on xda when people stop buying into the false info regarding gorilla glass and scratching....

If it was a stone based countertop, then it may be hard enough to scratch gorilla glass.

I too scratched it by putting it face down on a table. The center of the screen touches the surface and it even spins. I got semi-circular scratches on my phone. I never once got scratches on my GS2, so the only explanation is the fact that there is no lip. Today I received a replacement device and sent back the scratched one (Moto has a 14 day exchange policy). Now we know not to put it face down.
I learned my lesson with my Note 2. It was the first phone I didn't put a screen protector on and it was also the last one. I put one on my X before I even powered it on.

I know.
Well, "sand" can be many different things, some of which have quartz which is very expensive.

This? No offense but it is 2013 and people have not learned to put screen protectors on the smartphones?

I choose not to use a screen protector. What's the point of protecting the glass if you never get to feel how nice it is? There are no screen protectors that offer the same feel as glass with the exception of the steinheil glas.t ones but they have their own set of issues. I haven't used a screen protector on any phone since the EVO 4G and have never gotten any serious scratches. Superficial swirls, yes, but who gives a crap about those? Not I. These are glass screens not plastic, and as such they are very hard to scratch. They don't need screen protectors.

Because who doesn't prefer to have scratches on their screens right? It is not like scratches decrease the value of a phone or anything like that, in fact it makes it look better. And who does not like sliding their fingers across scratched Corning Gorilla Glass to get that reddish hue and that stiffness on the tip of their thumbs and index fingers when they scroll and play games?

I knew better but figured I would chance it and if I got a scratch that pissed me off enough I would just do an insurance claim. Oh well, it's my son's problem now that nice I gave him my Note 2.

Right, so use a crappy protector so the next guy gets to use a perfect screen. I sell all my old devices so I am well aware of how it affects resale value. Are you really going to ugly up your phone for a year or so with a protector just so you can make an extra $50 later on down the road? Or drag your fingers across a ****ty plastic protector vs. nice smooth glass when gaming? Doesn't make any sense to me. It boggles my mind how people scratch their screens so easily. I work in the trades and I always toss my phone in my tool bag with tons of sharp, jagged tools and I don't get any scratches ever. On any phone.

Hint: not everybody considers buying a phone for resale after the new hotness comes along. People who do? Of course they should consider putting on a screen protector and an otterbox.
But people who value ergonomics? Not so much.
FWIW, my last two phones have been case and screen protector free. They've picked up the odd cosmetic ding, but the gorilla glass has been flawless after two years of usage. YMMV.

Hint: Everyone cannot have a smartphone for two years and not use screen protectors without having a scratched up screen. There are no ergonomics to value on a scratched up screen unless one appreciates having their fingers get red or irritated from rubbing it while scrolling, swiping, or playing games.
