[Q] permanent change "viewing mode" to desktop - Acer Iconia A500

About:debug in advance, change "viewing mode" to desktop aloud me to stay in desktop and stick without having to go into adout:debug again even after a reboot. Can someone else try it and confirm it. I've tried so many things to get it to stick i have no idea if this is what caused it. And yes the string is set to desktop.

I believe that option was included in settings->advanced in the browser since 3.1 so it keeps its value after rebooting.

If you want Hulu working on the FroYo:
Open Browser And Type "about:debug" (Without Quotes) In The URL Bar
Press The Menu Button
Settings > UAString > Desktop
Enjoy Hulu On Android!

Dang. I looked there, too. That's what I get for thinking I know something.
yeah, it works. For a few minutes. Then it stops.
Thanks!
Works for me. Just watched a full episode of Family Guy.

now we jsut need boxee to make an app
only worked for a couple minutes for me too. But it worked.. a little choppy still. Hope to see flash video get optimized soon.
works great thanks ! i was just cussing the crap out of hulu for not working with flash on android. lol
Apparently it is not hardware optimized yet so that is the reason for the choppy video. But flash games and sites work great.
Thanks man, works for me too
Doesn't work anymore =(
They're catching on to us
edit: never mind, it still works. the browser reseted its' settings. I had to set it back to desktop again.
not working for me. the load up bar stop half way or 3/4 of the way and just gets stuck. any help? im running froyo on the ATT nexus one
This doesn't seem to be working any more. At least not for me. I'm on Froyo with Flash, and it gets to the point of the "Loading" spinner on a video for about 5-10 seconds, then displays "Unfortunately Hulu is not supported on your platform. We apologize for any inconvenience."
I double-checked the UAString setting, set it back to Android, then back to Desktop again.
Think we might have to use another method to spoof Hulu.
HULU stopped working for me as well. Looks like they filtered our device info again
meh never worked for me. Got as far as the pre-loading commercials a few times but then the usual "not supported" error. (but supported enough to show me the commercials? LOL)
You guys can thank Engadget lol
Initially Hulu was using the User Agent to detect a mobile browser.
I am guessing that they are now checking the Flash version and platform, using the System.capabilities.version method.
If that is the case, there will not be a workaround unless someone hacks the version info of Flash itself - possible I suppose, but not very likely.

I couldnt find where anyone mentioned this method of watching hulu...i have the phonemypc application so i can just use it to remotely go to my laptop or desktop and it doesnt have sound yet but the devs say it will soon but its otherwise easy to watch hulu.
Before froyo when id be interacting with my pc remotely if there was video it was like 1 frame per minute but now flash is utilized and it looks pretty damn good, and im guessing other remote desktop apps may have sound so thats at least a step in the right direction if you dont want to have to keep implementing "workarounds"... just FYI...

Web Pages Show In Mobile View

All my webpages are showing in mobile view. I have looked all through the settings and cannot find the option to make everything show up like I am on a PC.
Does anyone know if this can be done, I have been able to do this on my previous HTC phones. I have loaded Dolphin Browser HD and Xscope but they still both also show some pages in mobile view.
Thanks.
I have the same problem
I've tried every thing to and it won't disable mobile views anyone have ideas
After playing with different settings in multiple browsers, if you download xscope browser and tell it your an ipad it makes everything show up correctly. I tried desktop view in that browser but some things still came up as mobile view.
Egads, this is my #1 annoyance. although this is a Google thing and not Samsung, per se. HTC Sense however has an option in the browser settings to disable mobile view pages from coming up (doesn't disable WAP capability though so you can still open a wap page manually).
i tried the manual method where you enter that debug command in the address bar and then go into the settings where you can change it from mobile to desktop (and iphone lol) views and other phones the 'desktop' view takes care of it, but i tried it on the Vibrant and then it renders the browser unusable until you reset the browser.
I came to this site to post about this but someone beat me to it. I hope there is a solution out there. I also think its really stupid that these websites think they need to show android phones their mobile views.
Maybe someone can push one of the other ROM's browser .apk to this phone. The browser on the rom I'm using has an option in the settings to change your User Agent.
Hey guys/gals, try something out for me (I don't have a V so I can't)
Open up your stock browser.
Type “about:debug” in the address line and press enter. (No quotations)
Hit “menu” and then select “Settings.”
You should now see all kind's of debugging settings including "UA String"
Click that and select "Desktop"
Let us know if it worked
Thanks!
Doesn't do anything.

AFter typing about:debug in the browser address window you have to press menu, then settings and then go down to the bottom and look for UAstring. That is how it works on the Nexus. I don't have a Vibrant yet either but it is on the way.

May be Sammy did something to the Browser app... can we get few more confirmations that it in fact does not work?
Other solution could be to rip out Browser.apk out of CM 2.1 rom and try installing or ADB pushing it to the system.

So I did this and got it to work. Clicked UA string and selected desktop. Now my browser force closes repeatedly and I can not get it open. Please tell me how to undo what I did.
Thanks

How do you reset the browser? Ugh
After changing my UAString to Desktop, Browser did nothing but FC on start, I had to push a default version of Browser back to the phone and reset the settings.

Since I'm not using ADB, I used terminal to copy the Browser.apk from the Vibrant dump.
install busybox
cp /sdcard/Browser.apk /system/app/Browser.apk

Haha. Don't really want to do that. Maybe it is time to root.
I suppose. Idk, coming from the Mytouch, I'm used to wiping and formating and reinstalling and wiping and resetting things so many times testing the new roms that I'm used to it. May wanna try Titanium Backup first, I suppose.

Here is a fix for the jerky zoom in the stock browser!

I do not take credit for this fix. I just came across it on phandroid.com Check this out:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-sup...id-browser-different-pinch-zoom-behavior.html
I hope this helps some of you!
I actually used it and it does help. I didn't notice but now that I did, I'm questioning why I even used the other way
So people don't have to hunt for it:
I was able to disable this annoying zooming behavior on my HTC Incredible with stock Android 2.2/Sense. Here are the steps I went through: Enable debugging options by typing "about:debug" into browser address bar. Then go to Menu > More > Settings. Scroll down to settings under "debug" heading. You should see the option "Enable GEP zoom", and it will be turned off. Turning it on will give you the Google zooming behavior.

Awesome tip, thank you for bringing to my attention.
Agreed great tip!
Dude thanks!
I like that...thanks op. And the other op
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
So basically this disables the reflow of text when zooming in the browser. I don't notice a difference in smooth zooming, both on and off it looks the same to me. The difference like I said is reflow of text. I like that function so I will have to leave the setting as off.
it works great, but you have to keep on going into debug mode to use it
Doesn't bring up a menu.. I get a java toolbox. Running fresh.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
This does prevent the reflow of text, but it does fix one annoyance I've had since i got the EVO.
In a modern smartphone browser, the page should follow your fingers as you zoom. So where ever you touch on the page should follow your fingers as you spread/close them. This means that if one finger stays still and the other one moves, the page should stay put under the finger that hasn't moved. This is the way other browsers work and it helps to zoom so that you can expand the page and keep it centered where you want to see. The EVO browser does not work this way. Try it and see. Keep one finger still and the page will still move under the still finger. Grr.. You have to zoom then let go and recenter on the area of interest. However, checking this option makes the zoom work properly this way. This is at the cost of reflowing the text, which I rather like though. So its a tough call which way I would like more.
Anyhow, thanks OP. Nice find
After doing the fix, does anyone have the problem of it reverting back to the old style, even if the box is checked?
Nothing pops up when I type about:config into my browser.

Yup, I had that problem. So I just downloaded that dolphin browser to fix the zoom
Pushed the updated one to my phone, starts to play the startup sound, then hangs.
Running Fresh Evo 3.2.0.0 ManUP's theme, and unrevoked forever

Typing about:debug will not pop up anything. It will add new menus in settings.
The changes you do in the debug menu are temporary. The browser goes back to normal settings after its been closed.
Can someone try to port over the desire(flashable) version of this?

Did you try to flash it yourself? I'm going to flash it in a bit...
Edit: It works, just looks ugly as balls, gonna do a little work on it..
Edit2: Im going to take a guess and say that the only thing edited is the debug xml file, so im assuming that if you replace the xml file from our browser.apk with the one from theirs, it should work. im doing that right now.
I personally tried to flash it but got fc.

about:debug

It just doesn't stick. It resets if I close the browser meaning to get it back I have to go through the whole process again. While this isn't a big deal, it is annoying. Is there any way to get the UAstring to remain valid until the setting itself is changed manually?
I don't want to change browsers if that's the only option. I like the stock browser and sliding (labs, quick controls) features.

It works for me for most sites but definately not all. I happen to use msn as my home page and it always reverts to mobile version for some reason.
Tried Dolphin but it had other issues and I like the stock browser for it's simplicity.
Maybe in a later fix....
... maybe.
Create a bookmark to about:debug or even set it that as your homepage. That'll get it browser back in debug mode so that it remembers your UAString from before.

Edit: Didn't work.
I saw in the Xoom forums that someone changed the framework-res.apk to have the change permanet. I wonder if someone can do that for ours.

Only showing moble sites

Hey guys I just first want to apologize if there are a string of these somewhere, I cant find a pair of shades on my head... anyway I flashed to Dexters Iconia p2-2 the other day and noticed that no matter what I do I cannot stop websites from going into the moble sites. I have reflashed the rom twice as well as used Thor's new V1 Kernel with no luck. I tried stock (Aboutebug) I tried dolphin and skyfire and set their settings to desk top with no effect. It worked fine on stock 3.01. Could someone please help me figure this out?
Humm
Weird... I'm using Dolphin on Dexter P2 and desktop site works fine..
with the stock browser open go to browser settings then select the advance tab. Then look for "viewing Mode" and change it from android to desktop then you should be good to go. I believe you also have to type WWW. for each website address you want to visit, for it to go to the desktop version of the site.
You dont have to do the whole about debug thing anymore as it is in the settings menu. It's just called viewing mode now.
dolphyn browser
Use dolphyn browser with add on for switch from mobile to desktop mode. I use this and it s great.

Yeah, I am thinking this is my issue. As posted before I know how to set up the options to display in desktop mode, its just not doing it.
I did the following to get the desktop version of Facebook to show instead of Mobile. All it does it changes the UA (User-Agent) string used by the browser.
In the browser address bar, type about:debug then press enter. Nothing will appear to happen.
Open the context menu and head into the browser settings. A few new options will appear, including a Debug tab below Labs.
In this tab is a an option UAString. Click this, and change it to Desktop.
Head back into the browse and it should load the desktop version of websites like Facebook, over the mobile edition.
