Xperia Play Not Reading Simcard After Rooting, WTF? - Xperia Play General

I just rooted, followed the exact step by step.
After rebooting the phone, all works perfect apart from it's not not reading my simcard.
It keeps displaying ''please insert sim card and restart your phone''
It previously never said this.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I really don't see the point in people rooting their phones.
It ****s it up and does more harm than good.
My phone no longer reads simcards & has also magically downgraded from Android 2.3.3 to 2.2.2
Also just connected my phone to the internet to update to 2.3.3 as before and I get ''phone software update information currently unnaccessible.''
I also get crashes and force closes...
When using Sony Ericsson PC companion to update, I get the following message
''Update not allowed, the phone contains modified software that cannot be updated''
Now how will I update? What is the point in rooting if you cannot update software or do anything?
Rooting my phone has really made it worse.
Has anyone got any idea how I can get the phone to read my sim card as well as update to 2.3.3?
It was working perfect before the boot and now I have to use another phone since it keeps crashing, force closing and not reading my sim card.
Hopefully someone will respond shortly as I now have no phone to use.
Thanks everyone.

Sounds odd, how did you root? Is your bl unlocked?
Regards Dousan...

When looking at the ''about phone'' option, it reads everything as normal apart from the baseband version which it displays as Unknown.
The Android version has changed from 2.3.3 to 2.3.2, how can it downgrade when simply rooting?
Awaiting for advice guys....
What I was trying to do was simply to get the apk or obtain the original 2.3.3 update for the Xperia Play from the internet but after many hours of searching I found nothing.
I was thinking if I was to reinstall the latest update of Android 2.3.3 it may solve the sim reading problem.
Could someone please give me a working link for the default standard 2.3.3 update for the Xperia Play?
Thanks.

Yeah, it is unlocked. The sim card that it's now not reading used to work just before rooting.
I rooted 100% as the instructions said, it seems the problem is something to do with the modded Disc Image file which is why I'd like to download the original 2.3.3 from Sony Ericsson, copy it onto my memory card and freshly update to the latest version of Android.
I'm sure this should solve the sim reading problem.
Just need someone to put me in the right direction & send me a link of a site/file hosting site that has the 2.3.3 Android.

If you could explain how you rooted your phone it will be easier to advice. Also wich model do you have?

The file you need for stock r800i is in the dev section. Just flash it with flashtool. Look for a thread on how to retain root on 2.3.2 or 2.3.3.

This is the website which I referred to when rooting:
http://www.techofweb.com/technology/root-sony-ericsson-xperia-play.html
I followed the instructions step by step, was pretty simple.
The model I have is Xperia Play R800i, version 2.3.2, Baseband version is unknown, kernel version 2.6.32.9 & build number is 3.0.A.2.184.
What I want to do now is get the sim card working as well us have the latest update and rooted, as you said I'd like to retain it.

got the same problem you must go back to stock rom with flashtool.
afther 3 days my phone works great.
you can find all dl links in this forum.
so you need flashtool official rom and kernel.
and the update software from sony there are differnt drivers i think.
sorry for my bad english.

Could you do me a big favour? Please could you just give me the links for flashtool, rom & kernal?
There are more than one and I wouldn't know which ones to use.
If you could give me a link for the above that would be great.
Thanks once again.

Don't use any official way to update your phone as long as your bl is unlocked. If you want to update OTA you need to lock your bl first according to blagus tutorial.
Use this guide to get the stock FW and gain root (included links for FW and flashtool). No need for a kernel as it's in the stock FW to flash with flashtool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14547231&postcount=1
Before doing that lock your bl with this guide (you can unlock it again if needed):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14943322&postcount=1
It's very important that you start out with locking your bl if you use the root guide link I provided. If not you'll end up with a brick. You are safe to flash with flashtool but it's the updating with OTA (pc companion/SEUS) that'll brick it if you don't lock your bl first.

Many thanks Dousan, I will take your advice & follow the links you posted above.
Now, to then re-enable the root, what is the BEST guide to follow as I don't wan't the have problems with it reading the sim card and not being able to update.
Thanks again Dousan.

To gain root you just follow the first guide after you've locked your bl. First grab the flashtool from the first link (use the beta version 0.2.9.1), then lock your bl, then flash the stock FW from the first link, then use gingerbreak to root.
You're welcome, always glad to help.

Ok, I just flashed the phone. Once it finished and I booted up, it asked me to update to the latest 2.3.3.
I clicked later and will now run the gingerbread root.
Once rooted will I then be able to update or will I get the same message as before regarding a software issue?
---------- Post added at 11:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:16 AM ----------
Ok, I'm almost done, I'm just rooting it now with Gingerbreak.Apk
It will take a while, around 10 minutes to finish. I just hope it doesn't freeze/crash.
Once it has been rooted with the second link, what's the final steps to finally root the phone, also running 2.3.3 along with future updates?

I just tried to update to Android 2.3.3 via the usb cable and I get the message ''unable to flash due to modified software''
Any suggestions?

Ok, some good news & some bad...
The good news is that the phone is now READING my sim card!
The bad I'm stuck with Android 2.2.3 and it will not update due to the above message, something to do wth modified software.
All I'd like to do now is update to 2.3.3 & more importantly properly ROOT the phone.
The last thing I did was the GingerBreak root. It doesn't seem to have rooted as I have a program that is supposed to work when the phone has been rooted but it just force closes.

Try OTA update from phone directly over wifi. Hope it helps

I will try this once I get home from work.
The WIFI at work is ****, I'm getting 1 or 0 signal and I cannot even access the market place.
Tried a wifi update from the phone but it is not able to even search since the connection is so bad.
Will try it shortly and report back.
Thanks all.

You HAVE to update OTA to preserve root and it sounds like your bootloader is still unlocked? If so don't do anything until you have locked it, them proceed with OTA and only OTA otherwise you'll loose root. OTA only updates some parts of the phone whereas pc companion/SEUS does like flashtool, flashes the whole FW.

If he had followed the guide to rooting the phone that he originally posted then he has already unlocked his bootloader. DO NOT do the ota update or it will brick the phone again. If your bootloader is already unlock, you can just directly flash it to a rooted 2.3.3 rom and preferably doomlords kernel at the dev forums. Someone link it for him, i can't using XDA App. I'm not 100% sure about the flashing part. Because my bootloader is still locked. But i am 100% sure if you followed the instructions you posted on your link, your bootloader is now unlocked and you cannot ota update or else it will brick your phone.

OK found the links on my browser
This is doomlords kernel, i believe it's pre rooted.

I think you need to flash the newest rom after you complete the above step. Let me link that for you. One sec.

He tried with unlocking the bl and then flash a rooted system .IMG. The problem was that his phone wouldn't detect his sim card and wanted to go back to stock to see if that would make it work. So I gave him the links to do that and still get rooted and I made it clear that he needed to lock the bootloader prior to doing any flashing/updating to avoid a brick in the end.
It also seems that he wants to update to the newest FW hence he needs to lock the bl.

Thanks guys. I tried updating to 2.3.3 at home.
When it got to the end and went black it stayed there forever, as though it was stuck.
I then took out the battery and restarted it.
Now the phone is ****ed as it no longer turns on, it just vibrates everytime I attempt to turn it on.
I even tried going into bootloader mode by pressing the back button and then connecting it via usb cable into my laptop.
Instead of going into bootloader it simply charges the phone.
Anything I can do or have I just ****ed up the phone?
It's really doing my nut in, never knew it was such a nightmare to update & root a phone!

[Q] 2.3.3 in Mexico

Hi there chaps! I´m a NewB in the Android world an just acquired a Xperia play (r800a)
I´m from Mexico and yes there is no 2.3.3 update so far AFAIK, I have been reading about the different methods to get a successful update, so far I have tried PC Companion and SEUS with no luck (both state I have the latest software) then I bumped with Willlis111 thread (good job man BTW) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119074
So far I understand that (correct me if I´m wrong) I have to use Flashtool software with the UK generic FTF to override my current version of 2.3.2 so I can update OTA to a 2.3.3
For me, unlocking the bootloader is out of the question do to guarantee so I will like to try this method.
I have a bunch of questions cuz is something I have never done before (a little exitment in my life LOL)
I say better to ask the questions before than after....
1-I assume this will work with my r800a?
2-I´m assuming my bootloader is locked since the Track ID works?
3-What happens if I skip Step2 (gingerbreak)? Escapes to me the real benefits of the rooting procedure
And finally.....
4- Could this process brick my Play beyond resurrection?
Thanks to all and sorry for the long post....hopefully I´ll get some experience with droids and start building some apps soon
Rob.
Any input appreciated....
1) It is confirmed to be working on R800a.
2) If you haven't unlocked it, it's locked. No phone comes with bl's unlocked by default.
3) If you don't want to root your device, you can skip the Gingerbreak step. Here you have some insight on root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076720
4) AFAIK noone has reported issues with that particular way of updating. However, BE CAUTIOUS.

yeah! I used Flashtool and used the generic UK FTF with success! Configured the MMS and the Internet Aps´s and all seems to work
One thing I noiced is that now my SP seems to be a r800i instead of a r800a as it used to be....any ideas why? Any drawbacks on this?

Rooting wont damage your phone it just makes you an admin on your phone same as you would get on a pc (you can do things you normally cannot). Its totally upto you. I use AdFree which removes adds when browsing the net on phone plus the adverts in free games are removed, it requires root to use this program.
If you root see safe apps to remove thread. I uninstalled most of the things listed and there are no problems at all .
Also about bricking your phone in your first post. Rooting wont brick your phone but you might mess it up if you uninstall stuff thats not on that list so just keep to the list and it ok. Plus since you have a locked bootloader even if you do brick your phone you can fully repair it using SEUS.

Hello there my friend just purchased a Rogers branded xperia play how would i go about rooting it and unlocking the bootloader? i highly doubt its as simple as fastboot oem unlock but am confused at the current state of affairs.
Hello there friend, do you know if the phone is carrier unlocked or is it locked? if the phone is unlocked it will be so much easier to root. if your phone is locked you will need to ask Alejandrissimo or Blagus to unlock it (this will cost 17 euros there abouts, the software they use to unlock your phone requires SERVER CREDITS which they have to pay for... by doing this your phone will become fully unlocked which means you can then go onto the netstage of rooting the device), there is no way i can help unlock the phone but soon as that is done the rooting is very simple and straight forward. if you are unsure if the phone is unlocked/locked try putting another sim card into the phone (has to be different network)

Hey dude, thanks for the offer ive been googling for the past few days and am still unsure about where to start. Do you mind if I ask a few q's?
1. I have a carrier unlocked r800i, but not bootloader unlocked. Its on 2.3.3 and I want to root but prefer to keep BL locked, is it possible?
2. If root will I still be able to get OTA updates?
3. Apart from titanium backup what is some fun stuff to do after rooting?
Thanks in advance man ;-)

You can always reLock the Bootloader after you rooted there is also a method that works on all cept R8OOX to get R00T without Unlocking the BOOTloader
If Bootloader is Relocked, you will be able to get OTA updates, dont do it by PCCompanion.if bootloader is UNblocked then you will get a BRICKed phone, but can be recovered i think.
Alot of great AppS for RooT,DroidSheep is mean but total fun (See what people are doing connected to the same network ) app2SD PLUS , setcpu for OverClocking on DooMkernel,LCDensity and Adfree are ontop of my head.Wireless TEHTER and RooTExplorer are great, with RC being a MUST!
I personally feel the Xperia Play threads here at XDA is very fragmented.
This place would be a whole lot better if there was a global thread posted, that was specifically dedicated to all things rooting.
This would ideally include -
1) A conclusive guide how to root every type of model
2) Bloatware that is safe to remove
3) Completed ROMS / partially completed ROMS safe to install
4) How to overclock
5) Xperia Play specfic rooted mods that are best to install
6) How to update firmware / software once rooted, and how not to brick your phone
I am perfectly capabel of rooting myself, i did it at 2.3.2, but now i refrain from rooting because there is no global guide how to do it and keep 2.3.3.
Yes there are guides, but like i say, they are fragmented and are not noob friendly.

i have a newbie question..
I managed to root my xPlay but most of the people say to not update from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 from WIFI if you are unlocked.
What is the meaning of unlocked? It means bootloader?
Yes unlock most likely refers to bootloader. If it's referring to sim, people normally put the word sim in front

Hi
I am a first time Android user, Picked up an Xperia Play on Monday gingerbread 2.3.3 , Build version 4.0.A.2.368 . Ive read through numerous threads here regarding Rooting and unlocking the boot loader, I'm falling at the first hurdle. For some reason when I try to put the handset into fastboot mode (holding search key while I plug in the usb cable) it just refuses to work. it just charges the handset and I get the green light on the power button rather than the blue one
Is this a know issue ?(haven't come across a solid explanation yet) and if it is , is there a fix?
I have tried another method of flashing the firmware using Windows 7 64bit and 32bit with the same results, system does not recognise the drivers.
So any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Actually Ive just gone back to look at the unlocking bootloader guide, and this is where Im having the issue.
5. Extract fastboot.rar and open fastboot folder
6. Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
7. Select 'Open command window here'
8. Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold search button and plug in USB Cable)
Part 8 there...This is has to be done If I want to be able to unlock the bootloader....Am i missing something ?

This post is pretty much hitting the nail on the head.
Since there are so many different models of this phone and differences with regard to carriers it quickly gets confusing to find the right tutorial
Looks like my handset is network locked, I have requested the unlock code from my service provider, so Ill give it another go when I get it unlocked.
does anyone know if the US At&t version comes unlocked?
I am picking one up tomorrow and wouldn't mind getting a heads up on this
My unlocking the bootloader saga continues, I received the network unlocking code from my service provider this morning, now when I try to enter fastboot more I get an orange light instead of the green light I was getting before.
Any suggestions would be faboo
Keep trying pressing search button

yes you will lose root but you can again root your device with same method...
and dont post questions here...

With Lollipop you need the stock recovery and a completely stock, unchanged system partition (i.e. no root) or the OTA will fail.

my experiance with my device....
I've literally rooted 100s of devices in the past 5 years as it's a hobby and a side job. This is very seldom the case except for some Chinese manufacturers that are very lax on security, and even then it's not that common. Especially if it's an update to the version like 5.0 to 5.1, etc.
Unroot Sprint LG Stylo
Hello All,
I have done some searching on this and come up with different answers.
I received a OS update notification to V5. Now of course I am getting failure to update because I am rooted. I have read to use the Superuser app option to remove all files related to root and the update is still failing. The superuser option is the only thing I am getting in results. I understand that I can re root after taking the OTA update.
What method can I use to go back to stock so I am able to take this update? My phone still has stock recovery so I am kinda hitting a brick wall here.
Thank you all, I apologize if this answer is somewhere I didn't find.

Thank you very much for your response. It was a no go. They didnt have my KDZ
Same issue here. Any other suggestions?
You will need to flash a stock system.img matching your firmware number to go stock and update. For example, boost stylo users on ZV4 can flash the system.img from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/official-boost-lg-g-stylo-unbrick-guide-t3201406

Thank you for the response, I asked a question over at that thread regarding doing that. The person in there recommended not to do that since mine is sprint and that one is boost in case there is a small difference in the file even though they are the same company, etc..

Yeah, thats why i said boost stylo users, you never want to flash a system.img from another carrier. Im not sure where you can find a stock sprint system.img but you can ask around.

If g930pvps4apk1 is the latest Sprint firmware, can I root?

Hopefully I haven't trashed my phone. I tried doing one of the root methods and now my phone is stuck. Running the factory refresh does nothing but kick me back into the boot loader. And when I try to install any firmware I get an error "Complete(Write) operation failed" in Odin (I have tried a couple different versions) and I get an error on the phone also "SW REV CHECK FAIL : [system]Fused 3> Binary 2"
I am hoping that if I install the latest firmware PK1, if it ever finishes downloading, that it will un-brick my phone.
Is there anything else I can do to prepare my phone for this. Will reinstalling the latest firmware fix those write and SW REV check errors.
I finally downloaded g930pvps4apk1 and when I try to install it I am getting the same errors, Odin = Write failed, phone = sw rev check fail : system Fused 3 > binary 1

where did you get it from please give a lik i need this firmware
I'll check my history when i get to a PC tomorrow. But if you Google that firmware you will find it. It is the main place where most of the firmware comes from originally. Samdriver, or something like that. It will take about 3 hours though. I finally got it to flash from a different computer with the latest ODIN.

If I am doing this right. The files I used are here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ajoev1AT6kpmnJ1lGGcfwfq3JDwymQ
I'm assuming you have all the other required files. Samsung USB drivers installed, ADB installed...
I'll leave that link up for a few days.
These are the latest updates for my Samsung S7 from Sprint as of 2016/12/23.
I only flashed the AP, CP and CSC file, based on the following info I found in the forums.
Why I chose the CSC file.
CSC -> there's a PIT inside and will wipe your device
HOME_CSC -> the data should stay on your device
And I didn't flash the BL file based on the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...msung-galaxy-s7-sm-g930p-root-xposed-t3503599
thanks a lot,!!!
I just got an unlocked Sprint S7 for my wife to use in TMO and it came with this firmware. OP please share your finding on getting it rooted. thanks! Id like to flash custom ROM and make it run the best in TMO.

Well, I will just have to see if Suhide and Root Switch work. Its not like I want constant root. I just want it long enough to debloat this damn thing. I really wish Sprint hadn't forced me to buy a new phone to get their service. I should have went to T-Mo. Would have costed me the same per month anyway, and I could have kept my nexus.

oh sorry for that. I don't really use mms which is why i didnt recognize that. Though the calls and normal texts work for you right? I'm pretty positive that you just need to input correct settings for that to work somewhere in your APN settings. But I'm not 100% sure. Just play with your apn. I'm glad that they're doing a new thread about this because honestly, after that root and i guess the sim unlock too, it made my phone SUPER SLUGGISH. Let's hope for that thread to come but meanwhile im sticking to this.

Yeah it was sluggish at first until I flashed the v15 fix. Voice and MMS wouldn't work no matter what, but data stuck. I used the same apn as stock, build prop edits etc.. it was nice finally rooting my s7 considering it was on pk1 when I bought it. No worries I'll wait until nougat unless a fix comes up. This is my first non-nexus phone in 3 years so everything is still new to me.
Edit: that was without the idoneapps sim unlock. I just flashed the engineer boot and ran the root file. might be why I couldn't get voice or data lol

SM-G935V Bootloader

hey everyone, so ive always at some point when time permitted ended up rooting and putting a custom rom on my phone. So im fairly familiar with unlocking boot loaders and rooting phones and so i started with my sm-g935v. Its terribly laggy and I just threw Oreo on my 2nd device a nexus 6 and its super fast. The lag is killing me. First i knew i had to root so I found a method using Odin flashing a CF root. Boom now when it boots it shows an unlocked lock and says custom. Great, moving on to installing a customer recovery like twrp im finding out no you cant because the bootloader is locked? is this true? is that icon just an indication i modified the system that and thats it. Anyway, reading more seems like this engineering root caused it to be even more laggy and if i turn on wifi forget it, super laggy.
I see some people doing modified stock roms that debloat but are still plague with lag from the root? Does this all add up correctly? Am i able to undo this CF root and just flash stock vzw back so it doesnt show custom when it boots? I was thinking of just trashing it and getting a pixel 2 but i like tinkering and definitely cant handle not finishing a job. This would be my first failed attempt at putting a custom rom on a phone.
TLDR: is it still true to this day i can only root but not unlock bootloader, install custom recovery and put say lineageos on my sm-935v ? the feels man...
Yeah, it's very locked down. We can't unlock the bootloader and we can't root without lag...
Hey guys. First post. Be nice. ?
I AM NOT A DEVELOPER. I FOUND THIS BY ACCIDENT.
I hated how my S7 Edge G935V worked with the engboot. So I stopped using the phone. Figured I'd play around with again and flashed the G935U firmware. After that I rooted by flashing the engboot thinking it may be smoother than on the g935v firmware. Obviously, I was disappointed. In a last ditch desperate attempt I flashed the stock BL file from the G935U firmware and lo and behold, it worked. I have NO LAG AND ROOT!
EDIT
When I flashed the BL file I checked "phone bootloader update" on Odin.

I am on this rom right now: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...sungpay-norootrequiredtoinstallorrun-t3748717
It is unrooted until you want to make changes, you apply root, make changes, and turn off root and you can continue using apps that won't work with root. Plus you don't get the root lag because you won't be on root all the time.
I will miss custom roms, but this is a great alternative.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe the lag is from the eng boot, not root access. Correct? If so, who cares if you can root and unroot?

I have done this as well and it works fine but I am getting conflicted speed tests. I am going to try some different CPU configurations to see if I can't get it running smoother. I really do think @ars18 is on to something here.
These were some of my first results but we are messaging back and forth to make sure the directions i was able to follow and that i am not messing anything up. I am a simple man and not as smart as most you ?.
I've just flashed back to stock and set my phone how I wanted it because of the lag from the ENG boot.img...now I find this and I'm tempted to wipe/redo everything... Subscribed to this thread so I can read more thoroughly when I get to work on Monday.

Nvm I found it. Did a test on stock rom/no root. Not bad results.

***I've tried adding the picture as an attachment through the XDA app but it's giving me a bad request error so I just used imgur.
I flashed the full G935T Firmware to my Verizon S7 (G935V), and I've not had any problems, rooted or not. I'm only saying this because the verizon s7 device can actually accept any firmware designed for a US Galaxy S7. It isn't a secret or anything. I really have all 4 firmware files for the G935T installed to my G935V right now no questions asked in ODIN. It's been this way for like a year now. Full Operations, no bugs.
My question is, how is it that all the carriers colluded to lock the device down in the same way. Who is actually responsible for this? Can all 5 Firmware versions available to this device really be locked in the same manner with no loophole manageable? I don't get it.
It really makes me feel like there was an effort outside of the OEM's/Carriers to make sure the Galaxy Devices starting with the S6 would never fully be root-able. It makes me feel like when ChainFire gave up on Samsung, all of sudden the devices are no longer unlock-able like they used to be. Is this just coincidence in the order of events regarding root and newer devices?

Thats not a bad rating at all. When I was using the eng_bootload file it was down around 6 and my cpu was always running high. Battery was crap and phone got hot soo easy. If you want to include your image in the post all you need to do is wrap the img in the square brackets like other forums the [ and ]. (IMG "Image Info")http link here(/IMG) but instead of the half circle use the half square.
Crap I think I just confused everyone including myself. Anyhow there is also a paper clip icon you can upload images right to this site or there is an icon with a sun and mountains, that lets you embed images like below this writing.

Not sure if u followed my method exactly. My phone is PERFECT
---------- Post added at 02:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:21 AM ----------
The reason why my method shouldn't work is because of the fact that doing this should make the phone unbootable. Usually the phone will recognize that it is played around with. That's why this is so awesome. STOCK AND ROOTED!
Just to make sure I understand this, you're using the stock Verizon firmware on the phone, but with the booloader from the unlocked firmware, and it works (and it has an unlocked bootloader)?
Is there a way to do this without wiping the phone (and having to reinstall all apps and settings)? Can that be done by using HOME_CSC instead of CSC?

I'm using the stock unlocked version of the s7 edge firmware G935U. The flash the ENGBOOT and root. After that, flash the BL file from the unlocked firmware while checking "phone bootloader update" in Odin. Can't think of a way to do this without wiping.
