[Q] 2.3.3 in Mexico - Xperia Play General

Hi there chaps! I´m a NewB in the Android world an just acquired a Xperia play (r800a)
I´m from Mexico and yes there is no 2.3.3 update so far AFAIK, I have been reading about the different methods to get a successful update, so far I have tried PC Companion and SEUS with no luck (both state I have the latest software) then I bumped with Willlis111 thread (good job man BTW) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119074
So far I understand that (correct me if I´m wrong) I have to use Flashtool software with the UK generic FTF to override my current version of 2.3.2 so I can update OTA to a 2.3.3
For me, unlocking the bootloader is out of the question do to guarantee so I will like to try this method.
I have a bunch of questions cuz is something I have never done before (a little exitment in my life LOL)
I say better to ask the questions before than after....
1-I assume this will work with my r800a?
2-I´m assuming my bootloader is locked since the Track ID works?
3-What happens if I skip Step2 (gingerbreak)? Escapes to me the real benefits of the rooting procedure
And finally.....
4- Could this process brick my Play beyond resurrection?
Thanks to all and sorry for the long post....hopefully I´ll get some experience with droids and start building some apps soon
Rob.

Any input appreciated....

1) It is confirmed to be working on R800a.
2) If you haven't unlocked it, it's locked. No phone comes with bl's unlocked by default.
3) If you don't want to root your device, you can skip the Gingerbreak step. Here you have some insight on root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076720
4) AFAIK noone has reported issues with that particular way of updating. However, BE CAUTIOUS.

Thanks Logseman! I`ll defo update it in hopes it removes some of its glitches
I´ll take a peek in that GB thread that you mentioned.
Cheers and thanks again.

yeah! I used Flashtool and used the generic UK FTF with success! Configured the MMS and the Internet Aps´s and all seems to work
One thing I noiced is that now my SP seems to be a r800i instead of a r800a as it used to be....any ideas why? Any drawbacks on this?

I guess you are right mate, thou I thought that spec was more of a hardware thing...seem that is software related then
Now I´m on the verge...to root or not to root that is the question. I´m tempted to update to 2.3.3 and skip gingerbreak for the time. Somebody convince me other wise please LOL!
I´m sure that when I decide to root my Play there will be and upgrade of some sort with gingerbreak that will let me do it over the 2.3.3

Rooting wont damage your phone it just makes you an admin on your phone same as you would get on a pc (you can do things you normally cannot). Its totally upto you. I use AdFree which removes adds when browsing the net on phone plus the adverts in free games are removed, it requires root to use this program.
If you root see safe apps to remove thread. I uninstalled most of the things listed and there are no problems at all .
Also about bricking your phone in your first post. Rooting wont brick your phone but you might mess it up if you uninstall stuff thats not on that list so just keep to the list and it ok. Plus since you have a locked bootloader even if you do brick your phone you can fully repair it using SEUS.

Prototype x10 running 007

Hi all, before writing this i spent hours reading through the forums for answers and found this to be on hell of a forum, nice work!
This probably should have gone to the x10 debranding thread so if any mods are here and think that that is a better place for it, please, transfer it.
Anyhu, here's the sit...
So i'm from Croatia, Europe and i got my prototype x10 from Poland. It was really cheap so i didn't complain but i just recently found out that i'm running R1DA007 which probably none of you have. I've had the phone for about 2 months i think and it's been one hell of an adjustment from my old w810i...
The problem is, when i run SEUS it says that there are no updates available. The phone is unlocked and my carrier is Tele2 but i don't think that has anything to do with my problem.
I really have no idea what would happen if i tried to debrand this phone and get the 016 update that way. I'm guessing none of you know the answer as well but some of the experienced users might have an idea of what i'm getting myself into.
The thing is, i don't have any insurance for the phone nor do i have the money to buy a new one so i won't do anything which isn't at least 99% sure to work. There are no guarantees in life so i'm not asking for 100%.
With that update, i'm hoping to get a better software solution for my camera which is excellent in macro shots but sucks big time in landscape shot and such, take a look: img707.imageshack.us/img707/8921/dsc0064nv.jpg
Also, the keyboard just sucks. Hitting "a" or "l" is almost impossible from the first attempt so i tried installing this: xperiax10.net/2010/04/07/installing-the-htc-keyboard-on-the-xperia-x10 - but with little luck. I can now see the HTC_IME mod under locale & text and i click on the check box but still, the original android keyboard remains.
Also the white keyboard was "automatically" replaced by a grey /black one which i liked a lot more that the original white one but then it "automatically" disappeared after i restarted the phone. I couldn't find an option to change the current white one, how do i do that?
I need your help guys, any ideas/comments are welcome. Thanks in advanced.
You can't update your X10 until a flasher for it comes out.
at first i would choose the "repair" option in SEUS.
SEUS will then download your current firmware from the server.
you will need it if you want to try the debrand-option and also when something goes wrong.
PS: does your pre-version still have the front-cam in ?
It won't work. SEUS sends a query to the server with TAC and CDA. If one of them is not found then it doesn't update.
I've a proto and I cant update or repair

sorry for my ignorance, flasher for the prototypes or for the regular x10 devicer or it doesn't matter
is a flasher something that has to do with the device being rooted first? so i have to wait for the root and than wait for an application (i presume?) that can
flash my rom?

can you access the bootloaders or do you still get the permission error?
Yes, you need an application that can flash X10. From what I heard SETool team should have X10 flashing and unlocking soon.
interesting, so i flash it with just the updates or i have to have the whole package?

Guessing your going to have to do a full flash, but why not when cooked ROMs are about.
Can you see if you can extract the boot.img from your device?
sure, just tell me how do i do that and i'll try
i asked about doing the full flash because then i'll loose all my programs, data etc...i don't loose those when just updating, right?
No point.
1. You can't flash it back
2. I have already given it to Balsat who wanted to test it out
sorry i didn't get this
are you saying that there's no point in doing a full flash or?
edit: i get it now

ok, thanks
the SEUS app doesn't let me choose anything, when i connect it, that is the only thig that it says, no repair/install options
you need to use the EMMA tool from sony ericsson to update prototypes, you also need to have a working user and pass for it
hm, i don't have it but i might be able to get one
i'll ask the guy who gave me the phone
ps. would that mean that i could update it to 016 or up to as far as prototypes were tested?
You need Emma OA or R&D access.
could you calrify just a little bit please? btw. thank you all, you've been most helpful
it means (if you have access to it) that you could upgrade to any X10 firmware released

[Q] Can the verizon Play be rooted at all? (in the future)

Hi everyone,
I'm a new smartphone user, but I finally got one in the form of the Xperia Play. Upon doing research on the phones, I find that I'd definitely like to root the phone, and seeing that Verizon made a change to their version made me sad. Now, as I got the phone a few days ago, I was wondering:
Can the Verizon version of the phone be even rooted? i.e., should I keep this phone and wait for someone to root the phone, or will this more than likely not ever happen and I should go back and exchange it for a different model?
Thank you for any information.
-ender
I'm optimistic about GingerBreak being updated soon to allow root for the R800x. As of right now, version 1.2 just says "rooting" forever. I left it for 8 hours to no avail.
I believe it will be rooted with a future update for Gingerbreak.
Anything around will eventually get root. Its a fact of life basically
I'm willing to bet money that the verizon play will be rooted very soon.

Don't we have to have the BL unlocked in order to flash a generic image? Also I was checking out some of your post on the Arc forums I don't think Verizon is sim locked just CDMA and fastboot detects our phones just the unlock code doesn't work is there anyway the brute force or trick the phone to unlock? I would be willing try anything for the sake of the Verizon play's.
yes please please can we get some dev love on the verizon version of this phone.. I've had the phone 5 days and love the controls, but would like to see root access and all other types of goodies. Verizon is a bootloader locking b*tch, but there has to be someway around it. Unfortunately i think most of the devs on this phone aren't US/verizon customers so I don't think we're gonna see it too quick. I only have 9 more days to make a decision on whether or not to keep the phone or not...
Please if there is anyone reading this thread working on helping to crack this phone on Big Red please let us know... Unrooted + 3g reception issues might make me have to abandon one of the coolest phones i've ever owned...
Just take system.sin and loader.sin, make flash bundle and flash with flashtool. But be careful, if you don't have original Verizon's system.img, and you lose CDMA...

Wouldn't this require us to have unlocked bootloaders? Currently you can't get that on VZW/CDMA to my knowledge.

Flashtool can be used with a locked bootloader (see link below). Just put your phone into update mode just like you would with SEUS, and load your FTF file on the phone.
The trick is getting the generic UK R800i firmware to work correctly on the Verizon R800x. Nobody has done it, so there is the possibility of the CDMA radio not working after flashing (and other things may not work either). And AFIAK there is no R800x FTF file out there you can use to go back. But the R800i generic UK 2.3.2 firmware is rootable, so it could potentially be one way to do it.
It is possible to load the generic R800i UK 2.3.2 build on a Canadian Rogers branded/locked R800a, so theoretically it could potentially be a viable alternative
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108239
Yeah, cross-flashing is possible but there's possibility of loosing CDMA.
But I doubt this will happen since amss/radio is not located in /system, only some radio-related files which shouldn't affect this.
Anyways, grab /system/build.prop and if you'll need to go back, restore it, chmod 777, reboot phone, turn off, run SEUS.

OK thank you for your reply.
Just hear that i worked on other 2.3.3 devices so i was just curious if it worked on the ARC.
yep works on pretty every htc with s-off & 2.3.3
but when google patched their repo se included the patch in their newest update to 2.3.3, so nogo for this
When they've given us the chance to unlock the bootloader they should give us the chance to be able to root.

I know they're different, but as some of us can't unlock our bootloaders, and tbh don't really want to, nor should we have to just be able to root, they should make it much simpler for those of us who do want to root.
People will never be contented. First you give them your hand, the next they want your foot..
Anyway, just give it time, someone will find a way to bypass the patch made by Google.

Sorry for being a noob here but I've always wanted to know what S-OFF and S-ON meant.
S-Off, or security-off is a term used by htc in their devices to determine the state by which the bootloader is open. Then you can install roms bypassing the security that only official firmwares are allowed. It is used primarily by service techs to force install the rom, official ones of course, as well as troubleshooting.
The problem with SE, once the bootloader is open, there is no easy way to close it again, S-On (as with HTC). For the meantime anyway, i hope.
Someone showed a YT video how to Gingerbreak the 2.3.2 Arc
Go to YT then type "Gingerbreak the Arc's Gingerbread"
And one more to show that Gingerbreak 1.2 cannot root the 2.3.3 latest ROM as expected. Type "Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc updates ROM to 2.3.3 - how I did it & proof Gingerbreak can't root it"

[Q] Super noob needs a help here!

Back in old days when i had a HTC Wildfire with a few clicks i rooted it and started installing new ROMS on to it
But since i got this New Xperia Play : R800i Build NO. 3.0.1.a.0.146 {UK}
I got no clue how to do anything on it. Let me be honest here... I updated my phone using the option under the settings menu in About my phone and seems to be on 2.3.3 and look all my friends have rooted their phones but i got no clue if its even possible . Mabey im not such a noob or something but i would be really greatfull if anyoen could point me atleast to the right direction. Mabey some helpfull links to help a fellow noob

Mine was from vodafone and wasnt sim locked either. Ok you have two choices for root. You can either unlock your bootloader (there are many downsides and advantages to this so you should research it) or downgrade to 2.3.2, root using gingerbreak then OTA update to latest version. That way you will not loose root while updating.

No you need an unlocked bootloader to flash custom roms. But please read the pros and cons of unlocking your bootloader first. And understand what you can and can't do
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Ok mate just wanna say thanks a lot for your help and i really appreciate it. You really helped me out here. also just one more thing i need to know. By the looks of it the only cons in unlocking your bootloader seems to be that you will lose warranty and that your phone or your radio may get bricked which apparently can be fixed with restoring a backed up data using a program named omnius for se which i'm actually working on... however my only other concern is if there are any other disadvantages regarding the unblocking the bootloader that you happned to know of and be kind to share it with me Also just wanna say that i can see many tutorials as you said in the development section and i quite frankly i don't know which one applies to me since i realized one of the tutorials are for models with build number .184 where as mine is 3.0.1.a.0.145 AND I HAVE NO CLUE WHICH TUTORIAL TO FOLLOW. So i would be greatfull if you could lend me link to a right tutorial whenever you get free time on the PC
If all you want is root you can do that with a locked bootloader. You will have to downgrade to 2.3.2 (.184) then root then ota to get the latest firmware rooted. Follow the guide here. Or see this post i made here for easier instuctions on downgrading and rooting.
If you want to flash custom roms then you do need an unlocked bootloader like AndroHero has said. You dont need a specific guide to unlock your bootloader. Just go too the SE bootloader unlocking site (it gives you all the instructions you need) http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/. Then just flash doomlords kernel (which autoroots) or anything really from the development section (since i think anything can be rooted with one click with an unlocked bootloader) you will then have root and the ability to flash cutom roms.
Oh btw build number .184 = 2.3.2, build number 3.0.1.a.0.145 = 2.3.3 and build number 4.0.a = 2.3.3 (xloud version, the latest update)
+
If you unlock your bootloader OTA, Pc Companion + SEUS are off limits use any of them after unlocking your bootloader and you will brick your phone. Go to the dev section for the latest updates.

Hello there my friend just purchased a Rogers branded xperia play how would i go about rooting it and unlocking the bootloader? i highly doubt its as simple as fastboot oem unlock but am confused at the current state of affairs.
Hello there friend, do you know if the phone is carrier unlocked or is it locked? if the phone is unlocked it will be so much easier to root. if your phone is locked you will need to ask Alejandrissimo or Blagus to unlock it (this will cost 17 euros there abouts, the software they use to unlock your phone requires SERVER CREDITS which they have to pay for... by doing this your phone will become fully unlocked which means you can then go onto the netstage of rooting the device), there is no way i can help unlock the phone but soon as that is done the rooting is very simple and straight forward. if you are unsure if the phone is unlocked/locked try putting another sim card into the phone (has to be different network)

2. If root will I still be able to get OTA updates?
3. Apart from titanium backup what is some fun stuff to do after rooting?

You can always reLock the Bootloader after you rooted there is also a method that works on all cept R8OOX to get R00T without Unlocking the BOOTloader
If Bootloader is Relocked, you will be able to get OTA updates, dont do it by PCCompanion.if bootloader is UNblocked then you will get a BRICKed phone, but can be recovered i think.
Alot of great AppS for RooT,DroidSheep is mean but total fun (See what people are doing connected to the same network ) app2SD PLUS , setcpu for OverClocking on DooMkernel,LCDensity and Adfree are ontop of my head.Wireless TEHTER and RooTExplorer are great, with RC being a MUST!
I personally feel the Xperia Play threads here at XDA is very fragmented.
This place would be a whole lot better if there was a global thread posted, that was specifically dedicated to all things rooting.
This would ideally include -
1) A conclusive guide how to root every type of model
2) Bloatware that is safe to remove
3) Completed ROMS / partially completed ROMS safe to install
4) How to overclock
5) Xperia Play specfic rooted mods that are best to install
6) How to update firmware / software once rooted, and how not to brick your phone
I am perfectly capabel of rooting myself, i did it at 2.3.2, but now i refrain from rooting because there is no global guide how to do it and keep 2.3.3.
Yes there are guides, but like i say, they are fragmented and are not noob friendly.
Make a noob friendly guide and there will be a lot more interest in these forums.
Remember........the more people who are rooted.........the more people who will potentially purchase rooted software written by developers.
It's in everybodys interest to stop all this fragmentation of information, and for some expert to write up a conclusive guide to the Xperia Play.
@Pandasouljah if you only want root check this thread out:

E: this will update you to the newest firmware 4.0.A.2.368 - 2.3.3.
i have a newbie question..
I managed to root my xPlay but most of the people say to not update from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 from WIFI if you are unlocked.
What is the meaning of unlocked? It means bootloader?
Yes unlock most likely refers to bootloader. If it's referring to sim, people normally put the word sim in front

If you want to do the update on your phone, lock the bootloader
I used the XDA App to post this, what did you use?
Thanks for the advice guys! Im thinking its probably less hassle just to unlock the bootloader, seems that people have probs doing OTA updates with frozen and deleted stock apps, but i'll let u guys know how it goes anyway

Hi
I am a first time Android user, Picked up an Xperia Play on Monday gingerbread 2.3.3 , Build version 4.0.A.2.368 . Ive read through numerous threads here regarding Rooting and unlocking the boot loader, I'm falling at the first hurdle. For some reason when I try to put the handset into fastboot mode (holding search key while I plug in the usb cable) it just refuses to work. it just charges the handset and I get the green light on the power button rather than the blue one
Is this a know issue ?(haven't come across a solid explanation yet) and if it is , is there a fix?
I have tried another method of flashing the firmware using Windows 7 64bit and 32bit with the same results, system does not recognise the drivers.
So any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
If your bootloader isn't unlocked then ya you won't get a blue led it needs to be unlocked first

Actually Ive just gone back to look at the unlocking bootloader guide, and this is where Im having the issue.
5. Extract fastboot.rar and open fastboot folder
6. Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
7. Select 'Open command window here'
8. Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold search button and plug in USB Cable)
Part 8 there...This is has to be done If I want to be able to unlock the bootloader....Am i missing something ?

I personally feel the Xperia Play threads here at XDA is very fragmented.
This place would be a whole lot better if there was a global thread posted, that was specifically dedicated to all things rooting.
This would ideally include -
1) A conclusive guide how to root every type of model
2) Bloatware that is safe to remove
3) Completed ROMS / partially completed ROMS safe to install
4) How to overclock
5) Xperia Play specfic rooted mods that are best to install
6) How to update firmware / software once rooted, and how not to brick your phone

This post is pretty much hitting the nail on the head.
Since there are so many different models of this phone and differences with regard to carriers it quickly gets confusing to find the right tutorial
Looks like my handset is network locked, I have requested the unlock code from my service provider, so Ill give it another go when I get it unlocked.
does anyone know if the US At&t version comes unlocked?
I am picking one up tomorrow and wouldn't mind getting a heads up on this
My unlocking the bootloader saga continues, I received the network unlocking code from my service provider this morning, now when I try to enter fastboot more I get an orange light instead of the green light I was getting before.
Any suggestions would be faboo
Keep trying pressing search button
