Calm down kids. Before you go nuts this post is for pure speculation of the nexus s and how it will perform with ice cream sammich. Now that the next major update will support full hardware acceleration (..finally) I'm wondering what I call the king of the single core world will perform like. I feel like once it drops we will finally see what the hummingbird+vr540 combo can fully achieve. I'm excited. Hopefully Google won't screw us over and keep ice cream from us to glorify the nexus prime.
Cheers.

No worries you'll have ICS by Q2/12. On hte other hand Google said that one of the main features (yet UNannounced) will not be in ICS, maybe it's hardware accelleration.
Actually we will have ics the moment the source is released. (As long as android repos are back up by then!)

As much as I detest Apple, I would never destroy any of their products. One less phone on the market -> one more customer in their stores -> more money in their pockets.
Sell it on eBay, that way you get money, and they don't.

Yeah like IOS4 on the 3G... whats for sure is that Apple is not good at taking care of even 2 year old phones and they do a good job of making the old phone look like crap when they release a new one.
In my opinion in reality it's quite the contrary of what you claim.

They only do so to cripple older iPhones so the new one seems that much better to the isheep. Think about it. The 3gs and the i4 rock the same gpu and 200mhz difference clock speed on the cpus. Yet ios 4 runs like crap on the 3gs. The os still doesnt support true multitasking so what is really slowing down the 3gs compared to the i4. Some missing features and what I think is imposed sluggishness make the phone look that much worse to the i4. I had a 3gs. I was part if the iherd until I got fed up and got my epic. ****, I bet the hero can run ios 4 damn well.

More ram and a faster processor isn't a reasonable explanation as to why ios doesn't run well enough on the 3gs when Ios is very simple and isn't CPU intensive. Maybe whole running certain apps yes. But trust me when I tell you the 3gs was good enough to run ios 4 with no issues whatsoever.

You'll be able to do little nerdy stuff on the atrix, so if rooting and having some fancy home screens considered enough then go for the atrix.
For me having 1 gb of memory + qHD res screen is a deal maker/breaker
Also, a doubt that the atrix's bootloader is gonna be locked forever anyway...

Go for the Atrix you'll love it I'm sure. You said you'd like to root and have a little fun with it, you can hook up the Atrix to a nice sized flat screen tv via hdmi and turn it into a computer. The Nexus S is also kinda outdated tech already. The newest thing is the dual core and 1GB of ram that's more powerful than my netbook lol.

I like to tweak, and I have been more than happy with what I have been able to do on my 1st droid phone with the help of the XDA community so far.
I connected my phone to my flat screen in the living room last night to show the the Webtop and the family couldn't believe what they saw.

Both the phones have their own stand point.
Atrix on one hand does the deal breaking job with its Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but, it has MotoBlur and no Gingerbread in sight yet.
Nexus S on the other hand is Google's own, it has got all the Goodies except the Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but has Gingerbread on it already, has a SuperAMOLED Contour Display etc...
Holding two phones in your hands and comparing them side by side will do the trick. Go with what you like.
So far I love my Atrix. Haven't used NS yet, no comments about the performance, but if anyone wants to try different roms, NS is the one. There are a lots of Atrix users not liking the phone because of MotoBlur, which seems ok to me.
Personal Opinion : I like the way the bootloader is locked, so that you will have consistency on your phone, you don't have to back up your phone, messages, notes taken etc every now and then just because you are trying thousands of different ROMs available every weekend.
The Nexus S is clearly faster despite having inferior hardware, scrolling through homescreens and the app drawer is much faster on the nexus S. However, the atrix has the edge when you're actually opening those apps, albeit a small edge. The nexus S will receive more updates than the atrix and it's also already on a new version of the android OS.
However, i love my atrix. The fingerprint scanner (when it works) is pretty darn sweet and a great feature to have. I don't think dual core is even utilized yet, but i hope when it is the atrix will be even better than it already is. Oh, and the nexus S doesn't support 4G (?source). While the atrix doesn't have 4G yet, it should be coming out very soon.

I switched to a nexus s, I get the same quadrant scores if not higher than the atrix. The phone feels great works amazing and the roms only make it better. There is no lag and the camera kicks the crap out of the atrix. Battery life is phemominal and much better than I had on the atrix, plus it's much more vibrant with the samoled vs pentile.
I would get a nexus because at least for the moment it works better than the atrix.
Not trying to be a jerk, but as someone who has had both devices I can say nexus is much better.

I agree with you but I guess you are happy right now with NS because of the possibility to be able to flash any ROM anytime you want because of the Devs support. I wouldn't compare them both right now, as Atrix is not upgraded to Gingerbread yet. If the NS is still kicking Atrix's butt even after the upgrade, I am all in for this beast by Google.
I still love the stock Android experience, but Atrix's performance is not that bad. It does the job, it performs well. To me, except the VOIP voice support issue, everything else is much better than my N1 and iPhone 4. Battery life is way better than both, higher res screen is great, plus a Dual Core processor is a deal breaker... again, all of this is a personal preference.

It looks like it is a cheap version of the other HTC phones with a gimmick screen. I was seriously tempted by it, but I am hearing other news that it is a decent phone that feels cheap compared to the predecessor...Dont get me wrong, i hate the plastic on the Nexus S, but, for a "flagship" phone, plastic optics sound crappy.

For a handset with such a broad range of standout features and specs, the Galaxy S II is remarkably easy to summarize. It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period. Of course, a 4.3-inch screen size won't suit everyone, no matter how stupendously thin the device that carries it may be, and we also can't say for sure that the Galaxy S II would justify a long-term iOS user foresaking his investment into one ecosystem and making the leap to another. Nonetheless, if you're asking us what smartphone to buy today, unconstrained by such externalities, the Galaxy S II would be the clear choice. Sometimes it's just as simple as that.

Fanbois always complain, but to be honest, Apple does a lot right with their stuff and, generally, the praise is warranted. For the majority of people Android is "different" and not as comfortable as the dead simple Apple solution...
I am more amazed that the EVO3D was so mediocre in so many areas. People ***** about the Nexus S lacking 720p video, single core, etc...but the phone "just works" without needing all the gimmicks.
i know most benchmarks are meaningless, but i am sure the Dual Core push is due to ****ty coding on Sense/TW/Blur...My Nexus S crushes my wife's Epic and they are virtually the same core hardware.

The Dual core push is "bad" because they're running on software that is not yet optimized for Dual Core processors. The only things optimized for dual cores are Honeycomb and the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich. But even then, Quadrant isn't optimized for Dual Cores. So like you said, Benchmarks mean nothing.
Also, they're running on Android 2.2 for the most part! LoL

This is the only Samsung phone I've had luck with. I'm 50/50 on swapping for the evo 3d. HTC phones tend to be heavy and for me that really kills it.
I'm due for an upgrade from an Evo.
I have 2 choices, Nexus S 4G or Evo 3D.
I've had the Evo since the first day it came out and loved it since. So I'm kinda hesitant on wanting to give it up.. so I'm thinking Evo 3D might be a nice upgrade but I keep hearing Nexus is a better phone.
Which one would you choose, and why?
I'm a sense type of Guy so I would stick with HTC. I think the 3d is faster than the nexus too.

Nexus is and lighter, and supposedly guaranteed to be up to date with OS releases, if that's important to you. Everything else I've read says that even the old Evo 4G is better.

The only thing the NS has over the EVO really is battery life. EVO 3d is the latest and greatest, NS is 2009/2010 tech under the hood, already outdated IMO.

Well, the user experience is what counts, of course. But wit the Nexus S you're giving up the HDMI out, you're giving up the kickstand, you're giving up 1/2" of screen realestate, you're giving up an SD card slot (and potentially 16 GB of additional storage) and I've heard the Nexus S isn't any faster.
I do like the form factor (size, shape and weight) though, to be honest and would probably have gone with the Nexus S instead of my Evo had it been available at Sprint when I signed my contract (I asked about it at the time but they coulnd't give me a firm release date).

GPU being slightly better doesn't mean its a better phone overall. I play with both phones on the daily and its not a night and day difference......its still old technology either way.
Well thanks everyone.
I have decided to go with the Evo 3D.
The two big breakers for me were:
Nexus S is made by Samsung.... mehh..
and that it's... made by Samsung.
I've played with it a little.. it feels VERY cheap.
I'm going to upgrade to the new Evo.
Thank you all.

Slightly better? Its 4-5x as powerful and on par with today's dual cores. The Nexus S has okay hardware, slight but needed upgrade over the EVO because of the GPU. CPU wise it'll perform about the same as dual cores until Android and its apps gets proper support; by then there will be GPU acceleration and since the NS' GPU is reallly good, you won't notice a visual difference anyway.
That said, newer phones will be better on paper but the Nexus S is all about software. You can bet on the Nexus S having Ice Cream months before the 3D or SGS. I personally like my NS (was going to get the Sprint N1 over the EVO 4G before it was cancelled but have a ATT N1) and will jump immediately to the next Nexus. Will never own another non Nexus Android phone.

Where did I hear Nexus S2/S+ in July?
Ok, so I bought a Nexus S around January of this year. Full price from Best Buy. Thought it was fantastic. It was my first "Nexus" phone. But a few months later, I got bored and heard about the Dual Core HTC Sensation. So I sold my Nexus S and bought the Sensation.
I loved this phone at first, but the novelty wore off. But the entire time I had it, the Nexus S was in the back of my mind. Sure the Sense 3.0 looks good, but for a dual core phone it didn't feel better. The Nexus S is faster. I know that Sense uses a lot of memory, and the Sensation was my first Sense phone, but it ruined Sense for me. I dislike Sense because of the Sensation and will probably never pick up another phone running Sense.
So, this weekend I sold the Sensation to a user on this site and bought another Nexus S. I feel that at this point, if it isn't a Nexus phone, then I don't want it. Dual core or not!
LOL thanks, i guess that summarizes what i've been hesitant about
I was also thinking about picking up the Sensation, or the G2x, but no matter how i looked at it, it didn't have as much development going on as the Nexus S
also the lack of SAMOLED is a big no no for me.
the only phone i've set my eyes on at the moment is the Samsung Hercules due out on the 09/26th
Yes, I missed the hell out of the Super AMOLED screen. It was one of those "don't know what you've got till its gone" type of things.
I would stay away from the Sensation and stay waaay the hell away from the G2X phones
The Super AMOLED spoiled me so I hope that Samsung gets the next Nexus phone too.

did you see the news about Google buying Motorola? http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-20092362-94/google-to-buy-motorola-mobility-for-$12.5b/
... seems like the next Nexus is going to be a Motorola
i wouldn't mind if they build them with SAMOLED from Samsung
after all Google is buying Motorola to get the patents to protect all big 3 (HTC, Samsung, Motorola)

Too late into the development cycle for Moto to get the next Nexus..but maybe the one after that. Plus, Andy Rubin just said even Moto would have to bid for the Nexus just like everyone else.

I returned my EVO-3D for my Nexus-S. The Nexus is the faster and smoother phone in my opinion.
Plus this screen after setting up Voodoo is amazing.
The next Nexus will be made by Samsung most likely or LG. I see Motorola making the Nexus-Four

I like the open, devvy nature of this phone.
I just wish my battery didn't suck.

To be quite honest, this is one of the less active boards, development wise. Not complaining, just pointing it out.

I don't mean xda's NS4G section, I mean the whole idea of the Nexus phones in general.

I think partly because it "just works".
The EVO boards everybody was trying to get AOSP/Cyanogenmod working and bugfree (bluetooth stack issues) and add Wimax support.
G2x also trying to get AOSP working, in a stable fashion. And they're trying to port the LG camera to AOSP. Also bluetooth issues there.
Here everything already just works.

Yeah, I remember seeing your name on the epic forums, the Epic ain't a bad phone, but the nexus is just to legit in every single way.

This has been covered ad nauseum, but basically the other phone development forums are swamped with activity, most of which revolves around trying to get their phones to be like the Nexus is out of the box.
Maybe someone can start posting ROMs with features like "SENSE-less, no Touch Wiz, MotoBlur removed, ZERO BLOAT!!!!!?!" and then we can be like the other forums.
I second that, OP. Had the NS4G but then bought an SGSII and jumped on AT&T. SGSII was an AWESOME phone hardware-wise, and really liked that I was only paying $10/mo data for unlimited hspa+. But software wasn't as good as stock GB, and I missed the form factor of the NS. So I sold the SGSII and now looking for an AT&T NS, probably a white one since they went down in prices recently...then consider the Nexus 3 when it comes out
I have to agree with most on this board. if you want the newest updates always and if you want all the apps to work with your phone right off the back, stick with nexus. skype and netflix worked with the nexus right off the back, it took a couple of months before most of the other phones caught up. nexus prime is definitely my next phone, and hopefully it drops soon
Does anyone know if there is still any place that sells brand new GT-I9020T Nexus S phones?
Best buy

and will that work on T-Mobile 3G? I see that it is listed as an AT&T phone
You have to pick the Tmobile one. They sell all 3.

are you sure? I don't see the T-Mobile Nexus S listed on their site...

traded an htc sensation for mine. no regrets
having trouble deciding between the Nexus S and the upcoming nexus prime.. the prime looks cool but 4.65 inch screen just seems impractical for a smartphone...
the prime is not going to be released any time soon
hope that helps
wait seriously? how do you know?

4.65" is including the part for "buttons" since they will be on the screen as there aren't any physical keys. so technically it isn't 4.65"

Depends on your definition of "soon".
As of right now it looks like it will be released around November.
If you want a cynic's opinion, here it is: The Nexus S was old-hat before it was even released. The only benefit was the ease of unlocking and getting updates first, which sounds awesome until you realize that the initial versions of GB were massively buggy. I'd expect the same for ICS. Add to that the fact that HTC is making it so you can easily unlock all of their phones and the list of reasons why I would want one gets much, much shorter. Non-existent, in fact. I'm actively looking for a way to get my hands on a device with hardware that wasn't dated before the first model rolled off the line or wasn't succeeded months later by a phone with a key feature the original was lacking for a more than sub-par carrier. I've said it before, but to save you the trouble of reading it somewhere else, I should have learned my lesson about buying Samsung phones after the Epic 4g debacle but I didn't. I have now and I'll advise anyone against buying their POS devices.
what does gingerbread being buggy have to do with samsung?

When did I say it did? Never? Yeah that's the answer to that. See there are things called 'lists' where you mention many things that are all related to one other topic but are not necessarily related to each other. Like a grocery list. See cereal and baby spinach are not related to each other but they are both things I need from the grocery store. Just like GB being buggy and my hatred for the way Samsung treats its customers are both reasons why I wouldn't want another nexus device but they are not related to each other. Does basic sentence structure make sense now?

I think he was confused (as was I) by the fact that your conclusion didn't really follow from your argument. You complained about the phone being outdated and you complained about gingerbread being buggy and then you ended by concluding that you shouldn't have bought a Samsung phone. But everything you complained of was Google's doing.

I just picked up an i9020t Nexus S knowing full well that the Nexus Prime is coming. You know why?
Refined Galaxy S hardware
Comfortable rounded edges (looking at you, captivate)
Great ROM support, with ICS on the horizon
Respectable battery life
Pretty freaking fast
So yeah, the phone's hardware is dated. However, the Nexus S is my favorite size and shape, and OC'ed to 1.2ghz with some speed hacks from different places, I can't even imagine wanting for more speed. Now, this is all my opinion, but you can land a Nexus S now for a reasonable price. So get one and have several happy months of hacking!
