You don't have to, its just a good idea just incase anything bad happens. Like choosing the wrong partition.

I have an Acer Aspire 5738G with an intel core 2 duo and 4gb ram, I only have a 250gb HDD (I have a 1TB USB HDD for my music and video's ect)
anyway i partitioned 60gb for windows developer preview, and it works great, obviously a little slower than WIN7 because its pre beta.
You get a posh new boot option screen to dual boot too

Make sure you install windows 8 dev pre from boot to get dual boot, otherwise the installation will install over the existing operating system.

Yep, if it says so during boot

It decided to hijack the Win7 bootloader on my system and erased the option to boot into both Win7 and Linux.
I was really wanting to like it but as usual Microsoft always finds a way to piss me off. Plus they still managed to find a way to make it even less intuitive than before. eg. they added an extra two steps before you can even restart the computer
But anyways, it's formatted now and I don't plan on reinstalling it anytime soon...

And whatever you do, make sure you pick the new empty partition you created and go for clean install. NOT upgrade

Disregard, making own thread.

If you have windows installed you just boot to the ubuntu cd and go through the setup. It will give you the option to resize the drive to make a partition for Ubuntu. Pick a size and go through the install. Once it is done when you boot you will have the option to boot from Windows or Ubuntu. If I remember right it will default to Ubuntu if you don't make a choice within the defined time. You can edit Grub to change that. You can do this to change it to windows if you prefer http://www.hackourlife.com/change-default-boot-order-ubuntu-10-04-lucid/.

Yeah you can use it for custom roms because it lets you edit the updater script. You could use it for themes, apps, scripts, kernels, or pretty much anything you wanna flash

Or you could edit the updater-script . But really, if your gonna get your hands dirty and make flashable zips you should look at someone elses first. Or, even write your own from scratch.

Yeah I splice roms together pretty often. Its not that hard but hey, why not just use a tool to make it simpler =)

But, then you don't know what's actually going on...I think it'd be better to know how to make it from scratch and not know how to use a tool, then it'd be to know how to use the tool and not how to make it from scratch.

Slim down the Windows Developer Preview install image?

Hi there, I was just wondering if it was possible to slim down the installation image of Windows Developer Preview? I'm in need of installing it to a 16GB SSD so it's going to be quite a squeeze. For Windows 7 I could use Vlite, but I'm guessing this is not the same with Windows 8, any more.
Is there a similar utility for Windows Developer Preview yet like Vlite?
Thanks!
i don't thinks so it will be possible

You can use the Windows 8 ADK which can be downloaded from M$'s site.
or....
You can use the windows 7 GImageX v2 to mount the wim, edit, and apply. I plan on testing the images in vlite and RT7lite. I will report my findings here as I thought I was the only one interested.

Use WinReducer its for Windows 8,and you can slim it farther by using Vlite but Vlite is harder to use and you can mess up your iso. With WinReducer you don't have to worry about messing up.

Yes, most do.
However, it would be way to slow to be usable.
Now running ubuntu on a phone is a lot easier. Try it instead.

Nexus 7 Ubuntu 13.04 DESKTOP

Hi, I recently installed Ubuntu desktop on my Nexus 7 using multirom.
It all went well and works well if you use a mouse with an OTG cable, I understand it was meant for developers but has anyone been able to install the tegra 3 drivers and keep unity/taskbar working?
When I install the drivers and reboot, it boots up and looks better but doesn't have unity or the taskbar. I can get into terminal with a keyboard and pretty much everything can open but its not exactly usable this way.
Thanks.

Which Tegra 3 drivers are you talking about? Ubuntu Desktop for Nexus 7 should already come with all the drivers it needs.
Its very slow and doesn't play videos, only sound. Also, in "about this computer" or something like that, none of the hardware or even the devices name is recognized. Here's a link to it https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/armhf/nvidia-tegra3/16.0-0ubuntu3

Yes, those drivers are already included in Ubuntu Desktop for Nexus 7. They do have issues though (lots of screen tearing). Playing video shouldn't be a problem though if you have the right codecs installed.

Yes that's normal. Canonical ported Ubuntu to the Nexus 7 solely to test it and optimize it for low-spec devices. They didn't do a whole lot to polish it up and make it presentable for end users because that wasn't really their goal
Oh, let me offtop a little.
Is there any "easy" way to try out Ubuntu on grouper? I mean easy like flashing zip in recovery and then restore back to android...

Yeah man. Multirom is an app made for nexus devices that let's you multiboot ROM and distros. I've got cm11, ubunut and active plasma installed right now. Just read the how to's on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011403 and download the Ubuntu 13.04 from that page. If you want a few other distros for multirom get them here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093797. It really is the easiest way to actually dual boot. And the dev is amazingly helpful. Don't hesitate to report a bug to him.

is it a linux application ?
what are we supposed to do with the.7z file ?

The 7z file needs to be extracted in 7zip file manager. There should then be a IMG file that you need to burn to a USB with Win32DiskImager and boot on a PC. Then install the the HDD in the installer. Be careful with the HDD formatting, its a confusing naming system. I have accidentally formated the wrong drive in the past. It is a full OS.
Is it only for x64-CPUs or also for x86-CPUs? If it is not for x86-CPUs, than i ask you to compile a x86-Build. Thank you! I want install it on an ASUS Netbook.

What about lineage-14.1?
it would be awesome if it's 14.1 since nougat support freeform
Lineage is the siccessor of the biggest alternative rom CyanogenMod. For me, there are many reasons to love cm: 1. I like to make all devices looking same, i hate sony-samsung-htc-huawei-moto...themes,bloatware and so on! (Only Sony cam is really nice)
Before a view years, cm was really good. When i buyed a new device (especially 4 months old), mostly there was a ready CyanogenMod out, sometime official, so i flashed and was happy. In the last 2 or three years, CyanogenMod was getting bad worse worst! Not much new devices, not much new updated, not actually Android versions, not much good mods, extras etc. included.
I hope, and it seem so, that it al will be getting better! But there is one big problem:
cm died becouse of getting commercial etc.
Developers must live ,so they need money.
Many developers proramm in their free time and have to work an their main job (waste of genious i say)
My suggestion is that lineage should get the best of both worlds, commercial and free/open source!
The main OS and all of his extras should be free to load, install and use!
Some not important services like OTA updates or user-support (not called customer-support) should cost money, but not much!
I think, a small price of 1€/Month could everyone pay who wants and was respect of this work..i would. When the account is empty, an support ab could be closed and no OTA's could be loaded...
Can you add multi tasking and external screen support to your x86 i mage.
Someone has already done the necessary code for it https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/rom-oxi-smartphone-computer-oneplus3-t3558293
Just needs to be included in the x86 image
Interesting idea

There's a new build of CM 14.1 -86 here:

I managed to install it to an old netbook [Toshiba N450 Netbook].
It is fast and has a beautiful interface.
Some apps keep foreclosing though.
It can be installed on 32bit and 64bit laptops.
It would be great to hear other feedbacks!
Hats OFF to the devs.
