Network 3G and H swapping problems... - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi
I have this problem and i think ive come across a few people with the same frustration.
Which is the constant switching of our galaxy s fone networks frm 3g to H.... Happens so constantly it disrupts and keeps me in limbo so many tyms i cnt even tether properly with this problem!!!!
Please olease is there any fix for this out? Ive looked everywher!!!!! And if not. . . please as a humble request can a dev please create something so that only H frequencies are chosen and are prioritized so that it doesn switch to 3g please?????

Ha.
Yeah mine does too sometimes.
A way I get past it is to tap back button and select again and it quickly loads up in h.

Could be a problem with XXJVS radio? I go back to XXJVR to compare results.

HSDPA is an extension of 3g. It uses the same frequency. The reason it is switching is to save power for better battery life. It switches to H when you are using the connection, but than switches back to plain 3g when it is idle.

Mate. What's with your logs obsession????
Too much hassle to log. Hardly ever happens and when it does its an easy fix.

user experience is well problematic
one will see 3g changing to H and call it a bug or so =)
i belive only on what is there in logs

Yes ofcourse its an extension from 3G to H .... But i am still using the dam network n it still keeps changing to 3g and H is there no way to keep it on one of em?

That's just how dataconnection works. .if you want to keep your connection in H-mode constantly, you need to make your phone to ping something for every 3 seconds...like ping -t 3 8.8.8.8 in windows (if I remembered it correctly).
In short: connection is in H-mode as long there is traffic. .

In my experience (from reading stuff here and observing my phone) it seemed that constant switching between H and 3G drains battery faster than if we could force the phone to use only H. From your post, I understand this is not the case. I never thought that 'switching' was a battery save feature...

I'm using CM7, and although it switches to 3G for a short period of time very infrequently, most of the time I have an 'H' displayed, even when it's idle. I also don't notice any significant battery drain. Maybe my phone is just crazy, though.

I've had this since day 1 with my phone, through many different roms... it's frustrating as all hell and really hurts my battery life and my patience

The switching from 3G to H is not the problem and not the cause of the problem here - it's just the symptom.
It's because data is lagging and stalling further upstream, so the phone is simply returning to idle as it should.
The solution is to change carriers to something that gives more reliable data.

Take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837716 for a guide to disable HSDPA for better battery life.

Very useful info .... I asked for a solution to stay on H i get a reply to disable to SAVE battery life which is clearly not most the prioritized issue here... But thank u.... Any one else with a solution to either stay on H or 3G????
i had a sony x10 mini pro and problems were similar... But then from control panel i selected 3G only ( only options were 2G and 3G) and when it was onnit it NEVER gave up H ... Constantly stayed onnit so if its possible on a fne **** that m preetty sure we cn do it on a galaxy s

Wouldn't the most likely cause of your phone switching back and forth be because you're losing connection? My phone stays in H when I need it, and leaves it when it doesn't. So...

Nope i have constant network on full bars... Keeps working only until the H starts swapping is the time my phone enters limbo and i lose connectivity

The problem is that it literally hangs between 3g and H changing constantly without loading anything. If I say for example on xda, touch a thread and it does this, it may stay in a changing to and fro for minutes and not load. But if I select thread again as soon as it starts doing it it opens to thread quickly and normal.

3G only

Hello,
I was wondering if there was anyway to strictly run off of 3G? I was using cm6.1 rc 2 for a bit but noticed it switches constantly between H and 3G.. and in return rapes my battery. While rooted with setcpu profiles I get 5-7 hours more battery life while running on only edge. Anyone have any ideas?

Switching from edge to 3G is a lot different from switching from 3G to HSPA+ which uses the same technology. Cyanogen just made the signal icon more accurate, because the stock rom doesnt differentiate between HSPA (3G) and HSPA+. ANybody with a standard 3G phone will tell you that running solely on 2G will save you a ton of battery. The difference from 3G to 3.5G (HSPA+), however, is negligable.
Either use 2G or use HSPA... i agree cyanogen should have an option to stop differentiating 3G fro 4G since it can be distracting.... and ignorance is bliss afterall.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using telepathy and unicorn dust!
so wait im running cynogen mod RC 2 will it give me a 3G icon instead of a H cuz i always get confused whether im on 3g or HSPA+(3.5g)
You can do this actually... search for the thread about editing the radio settings in system/build.prop
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
And there is really no battery damage from 3g to hspa switching. U could just enable 2g only in settings.

100% time without signal - strange and serious bug detected

After 48 hours of usage, gsm signal dropped and returned randomly.
Tried switching 3g/2g, turning flight mode off and on.
Checked battery usage "cell standby" consumed the most of the battery. Strange "100% without signal appeared"
Rebooted the phone by switching it off completely and on. And... It's flawless again. Perfect hsdpa speeds.
Looks like serious software bug to me in latest XEU ROM or radio software.

This is what suppose to happen.
Cell Standby and phone idle will show most battery consumption when phone is idling most of the time. Basically thats the nominal amount that phone will need just to stay powered up.
This is normal.

100% time without signal and loosing gsm signal all the time are not normal.
It, wasn't a network problem. Everything happened at the same location.
Only full reboot helped.

No, thats not normal, but in absence of the signal, its normal for those two to show most usage.
Your phone might have failed registration on your network for some odd reason. If it does not happen too often there is nothing to worry about.

Lost cell connection. Nothing helped. The only way is to reboot.
100% without signal is known bug in ginger bread.
"100% without gsm signal" means no signal at all or wcdma signal instead of gsm signal all the time.

Did you fix it?
I got the same problem
Are any of you using one of the XXKGx Android 2.3.4 firmwares?
If so, try installing an older modem file; that may fix the problem
For everyone with the 100% w/o signal
Please share this.
Go to settings>About Phone>status....and then go back.
Check the stats afterwards, you'll see the counter decreasing.
it's not a serious bug. it's just a log bug.
Hi,
I've fixed this problem changing a mainboard in the maintenance assistance and upgrade the firmware as well

Improve your 3g network

Hello, everyone!
Have you ever think galaxy s3 3g connection sometimes unstable?
especially 3g switch between H+,sometimes get stuck,
often stay in 3g,can not switch to H+,
no matter how i to modify(build.prop 3g tweak , init.d tweak)it does not improve!
one day i accidentally saw a discussion forum,
try the following settings ,3G stuck, and finally be resolved
suppose you have this network problem, you can try
setting/more settings/mobile network/network operators
search and select operators, confirm, registration your operators!

+1 or its lost in translation
It most likely applies to an area conjested with multiple networks. If your phone is bouncing from one telcos tower to the next then locking in one makes sense.

Constantly losing signal. Am I alone?

Hi everyone, I've noticed a small problem on my phone ever since I've purchased it. Many times the phone's signal simply goes off, what really annoys me is the constant packet data loss, sometimes I havs to reboot the phone to get my mobile networks back on. Changed kernels several times same with ROMs but that doesn't seem to be a solution. I did not make this thread to ask for help but of curiosity if I'm the only one with this. Kind of reminds me of an iPhone video I've seen long ago about how it loses signal once you put your finger on the corner.

It happens. Usually, if my signal is lost, I'll activate the flight mode then deactivate it afterwards. Its like "restaring the signal". Otherwise, search at google play for signal booster.

I have the same problem here, I had another phones that has signal almost everywhere I go, but my Galaxy Y loose signal even when its not moved! My sister has a LG E400F, and the signal is preety good. Really annoying.
Btw, I have a bug, when I am only in emergency call, my phone shows signal bars, like if I had signal. Anyone have this bug too? And is only on stock rom.
EDIT: The bug that I have is from the firmware UTKL from Brazil, I tried another firmware version and have no bugs.
Think I'm gonna send an email to Samsung. Wonder if it's hardware related.

good thing I have good and consistent signal with my SGY.
I have two SGY cellphones, both have strong signal even when I'm inside a building.
I hope you can find answers to your prob.
my signal is like that last 2 weeks ago... my brother and classmate who own SGY lost signal also but its now back to normal i think its our phone has a problem maybe if they released a new firmware.. it will solved this
same problem here bro...my SGY loosing signal too even you are not moving i can get signal in the office but other places i cant get signal
im with you
well from my observation mybe this is related with busybox version you have installed. I recall you mentioned using custom kernel right. try reflashing stock rom or try another custom roms. i previously have signal related problem with chobits rom when I updated the busybox.
I'm also losing the signal of my SGY.
And sometimes it is in weird state that my signal is at 3 bar but status says that it is for 'Emergency Call' and I can't call or even text.

Stay on hspa?

Sounds like Fast Dormancy. It switches back and forth to save battery when there is no data use.
Suggest you do some reading on it!

It will change to H when using data, otherwise it will remain on 3G when idle. Mine also switches between the two regularly. I wouldn't worry about it.
