A2sd question.. - Wildfire General

Dudes i have got another question regarding dta2sd,as i have installed beta3 in cm7 nightly#177, and every thing runs fine, i have dalvic cache in sd too. But still my phones memory goes down while app installation. And it is due to data storage(app data).although apps are in sd, app data are still on phone memory. So is there any terminal command/ method through which i can move the data storage to sd? I dnt want to use the primary partition( fat32) i like to use ext3( where my apps are stored now), can i try app2sd or link2sd? Or do i need to use the inbuilt app moving option?

id say use app2sd.
using terminal emulater type in su
press enter
should now be in superuser mode
now type in a2sd
and space followed by desired choice of below.
eg. a2sd cachesd
cachesd
Moves Dalvik cache files to the ext2/ext3/ext4
partition on your secure digital card. Creates
Dalvik Cache to SD flag.
File created: /data/.dalvikcacahe
File removed: /data/.dcpartition
cachesdreset
Performs the same function as cachesd, plus
erases the contents of Dalvik-Cache, forcing
a rebuild on reboot.
File created: /data/.dalvikcache
File removed: /data/.dcpartition
cachepart
Moves Dalvik cache files to the /cache partition
in your phone. Creates Dalvik Cache to Cache
Partition flag.
File created: /data/.dcpartition
File removed: /data/.dalvikcache
cachepartreset
Performs the same function as cachepart, plus
erases the contents of Dalvik-Cache, forcing
a rebuild on reboot.
File created: /data/.dcpartition
File removed: /data/.dalvikcache
nocache
Moves Dalvik cache files to the internal phone
storage. Removes all Dalvik Cache flags.
File removed: /data/.dcpartition
/data/.dalvikcache
nocachereset
Performs the same function as nocache, plus
erases the contents of Dalvik-Cache, forcing
a rebuild on reboot.
File removed: /data/.dcpartition
/data/.dalvikcache
resetcache
Clears the dalvik cache and restarts phone.
reinstall
Moves free and paid apps to the ext2/ext3/ext4
partition on your secure digital card. Removes
the No A2SD flag file.
This is used if you have already executed an
a2sd remove command. Otherwise, this part is
automatically performed when Apps2SD is
started.
File removed: /data/.noa2sd
remove
Moves free and paid apps to the internal phone
storage. Creates the No A2SD flag file.

you asked for terminal commands ? terminal commands i give, with explanations on each command. !!!!
if you want dalvik on sd go to terminal emulator and type
su (then enter)
a2sd cachesdreset (then enter)
phone should reboot.
apps to sd go to terminal emulator and type
su (enter)
a2sd reinstall (then enter)
think thats all really.

Dude u have given me all info; first of all I thank you for your support. But it's of no use, coz I am in search of a way to move the data to ext3 of my SD. And I found it straight from terminal using a2sd help command. And it is "a2sd datasd "( experimental) . I have done it. Once again thank you.
And could you help me in knowing the uses of these..
1) zipalign
2) swappness/ use of swap
3)low, aggressive, extreem,etc. Memory management.
I found the description of these in a2sd support pages also in a2sd help command, but don't understand what it do with the phone. So please help me.

best way imo Custom MTD Partitions im using it whit no problems

I agree with darkstep, custom mtd is the future.
Although I've just reinstalled a2sd beta 3, just because I'm curious to see how they go together.
No problems so far with apps and data on SD. This is how my memory stats play out according to a2sdgui.

Try "move2sd enabler" found that it moves the harder to move apps, also sets sd as default install.

If installed correctly? ie "Superuser" rights, then go to settings>Applications>manage applications: select an application, you should now have the option to "move to sd card" Note that this does not work with all apps but certainly 80/90%. Future apps will be installed to your sd card automatically.
Good Luck

Move2sd should be in your allow list in superuser.
Uninstall move2sd and reinstall, it should prompt you for superuser rights, once granted you should be good to go.

You need to "Hardspl" you'll find some answers here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808015
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915628
i already have hspl since i using energy rom in winmo
Is your build rooted?
I m using phiremod evo
how do i check if it is rooted or not?
Hold on, hold on. You boot from the SD card yes? Then your apps are already on the SD card, in the form of data.img ON the SD card. If a 1GB data image isn't big enough, you can actually extend it and make more room, without losing anything.
You don't need app2sd.
thx.. how to i extend it?
Is it full? That's a lot of space to fill. I wouldn't extend it until you need to.
That said, I will explain. Please ensure you backup before hand, just in case. If anything goes wrong, I don't want blame, and I don't want you to lose data.
Boot Linux on your PC.
Boot Windows Mobile on your phone.
Copy data.img from your phone to your PC. MAKE A COPY OF DATA.IMG in case something goes wrong.
Mount data.img with a command such as:
sudo mount -o loop /home/[username]/Desktop/system.ext2 /mnt
Make data.img bigger by typing:
dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=X >> system.ext2
(Replace X with the size in MB you want to add. 100 would be 100MB.)
Then type resize2fs data.ext2
That's it. Copy the modified data.img back to your phone, and reboot into android.
If any of that is not clear, don't do it, or at least make sure you have backed up first.
I take no credit for this, this is all available on this forum, so credit where it's due.
I hope that helps.

[Script for IC_CM7] App move from NAND to ext Partiton

Hi,
i make a script to move Apps from /data/data to /system/sd/.moreapps
i use it with the Script Manager in CM7 InsertCoin

option a: for move data to ext Partition
option b: for move data back to NAND
option c: for rebuild previous moves"
( use this after wipe data )
the script search the 10 biggest apps on /data/data
this 10 apps you can move interactive
download move.sh
Can GScript Lite be used as app?
i dont know that, but script manager its free in the market.

Thanks for good work.
But there is a general problem with this method introduced by baadnewz.
If you flash a rom update moved apps are not functional anymore.
Yes, you can move apps back to the nand before flash, but only if you have free space on nand to do that.
So I think a possible solution is a intelligent init.d script which recreates symbolic links on boot.
thx for your answer, you have this prob with a update from v23 to 24 ?

I've done moving and linking of seven apps manually on v22. After that I flashed v22 again to test if it works, it don't.
One of the apps is still visible in the app drawer but won't start (asphalt), firefox working good , others are not visible in the app drawer.
Folders are there, I've recreate the symlinks, but they wont start.
hmm thats stange
i have mobed 3 apps and its work after:
-reflash v22
-flash v23 without wipe
-update to v24
after recreate symlinks your apps wont not work ?
Yes, they don't work. Don't know if this matters but I'm on standard hboot, not CM7.
I'll try your script.
hmm then you use the a2sd version, sorry but I can not test this, I will not change the hboot again
hi, i tried to run your script using script manager but it returns one line of code which is 'free space after change' and only .moreapps folder gets created in system/sd nothing is moved. I'm on ICv25 and i have s-off so i don't see where the problem is
you must call the script with the argument move
call for move:
Code:
sh move.sh move
Edit:
i have make a update, now when you start without argument, you become follow infos:
Code:
syntax wrong
call the script with Argument, move or moveback
sh move.sh move
sh move.sh moveback

Same for me.
When I ran it through Script Manager with argument it shows:
"sh Can't open move.sh move"
Thanks for your support!
Update:

Yes, that's my setup but it doesn't work this way.
Finally got to my pc. Lets do a few tests. Time to sort the problems out.
A quick check of non working app after rom flash.
ln -s /system/sd/.moreapps/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro
ln: /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro: File exists
#
ls -al --color=none /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro
lrwxrwxrwx 1 0 0 55 May 11 20:12 /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro -> /system/sd/.moreapps/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro
#
So everything looking good, I've checked the files are there, but the app is "force close".
Lets install it again. App is installed in .moreapps dir.
First run is good. Second "force close".
What's going on I've no idea.
Moved back to nand another non working app.
Still doesn't work.
So there is data corruption on ext4. But why?
On same partition is app2sd and apps are running.
So let think for other reason.
Checked last installed apps. Link2SD.
Oh, sh*t. This app moves libs or apps on sd.
I've tested it for possible sollution for free space problem.
So this is the problem. This app installs a init.d script to mount ext partition.
After rom flash this script has to be installed again. Ok, remove links made by Link2SD and my goodness all moved apps are working again.
So let face the next problem.
I've preinstalled Script manager from starburst rom.
Uninstall. Install from market.
Strange! move.sh works with scrip manager as umber said.
Thanks umber and baadnews!
ah good news, the script it's very simple and it's based from baadnewz howto.
for me it's difficult to give support here, my english it's to bad
I am a bloody android noob, i can a little bit shell that's all.
thats the config for script manager.
-open script manager

Hey,
I have recently switched from InsertCoin to CyanogenMod and miss this script very much. I just tried to modify the script and it doesn't quite work. My System partition is not on Ext so it just created a folder within System on my Nand.
What I tried was "Find and Replace" on:
Find - /system/sd/.moreapps
Replace - /sd-ext/.moreapps
The script doesn't work and I am running as root and the updated version. I've attached it to this post.
Can you help?

DTAPPS2SD

I have seen alot of people asking where to get dtapps2sd on various ROMS so I am posting a Link.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35700484/dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed.zip
Instructions:
-Download dark tremors apps2sd and place it on the Root of your SD Card
-Boot your phone into Recovery
-Select Flash zip from SD
-Flash dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed.zip
-Reboot Phone
-Open up terminal Emulator (if you dont have it get it from the market its free)
-In Terminal Emulator type SU hit Enter
-Type in a2sd reinstall, your phone will reboot
- *Optional* once rebooted you can go back into Terminal Emulator and type in SU hit enter and then type in a2sd datasd and let it run and reboot.
You will then notice a major difference in Internal Space.
If this has helped you all I ask is you please hit the thanks button

Wow, I need someone with more knowledge than myself to explain this one to me.
Thanks for sharing...been using for a while and works great!
So I'm running dta2sd on evodeck. I've never had to restore a nandroid with dta2sd installation. I'm wondering if there's a different restore procedure? I would assume the following
1) restore nandroid
2) reboot
3) enjoy
But do I need to flash the dt script aftet restoring the nandroid backup ( I wouldn't think so since the nandeoid would include my current install of dt)?

I don't think so, the only thing I've found is that you'll want to make sure to include the SD-EXT as part of the back up if you're using Amon Ra.

And if you do partition your SD card before running the script, you won't be able to restore a non-partitioned nandroid. Don't know exactly why, but that's what I've read in other forums.

edit // I install it and fix permission, have error wit connecto to network, so reboot again into cwm and fix permission but it won't work
is it possible to use it with stock kernel. Cant flash doomlords kernel... can only boot up with it.

Finally, i got my 32GB microSD and installed Amarullz's app2SD.
Works like advertised
Later edit: Can this tweak increase my microSD's write/read speeds?
Cuz my ADATA class 4 32GB has the following results: http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/1396/sonyericssonr800i201202.png
Ok, this is working just nice, but i have to keep fixing permissions for every reboot, in order to have GSM network signal.
Does this work on the fxp cm7.2 kernel?

I just wiped and reflashed tweaks rom version 5.
updated to doom kernal 11, installed wifi zip.
booted phone, set up wifi, and apn.
follwed this step,
Code:
C:\>adb push 40ad2sdx /system/etc/init.d/
C:\>adb shell
# cd /system/etc/init.d
# chmod 755 40ad2sdx
# cd /
# umount /system
# exit
Rebooted phone 2 times, fixed permissions a few times but still almost every app force closes.
Can someone who has this working write up a full step by step guide and what order to to all the steps?

Works well for me...
Sorry for noob question.
But could someone please explain how to fix permissions in CWM?
When i try fix_permissions in ADB Shell, i always get "/sbin/sh: fix_permissions: not found". Is my Phone missing a file or is my shell missing a file? How to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance

What is 'system data'?

Can any one shed some light on what system data is on my N4s storage?
I assumed it was the os but that's partitioned and I then have the 5.8gb that's available...
Thanks!

Most likely the OS.

The OS takes up part of the 8gb to leave me with 5.8 though.. Anyone else?

Are you using CWM and if you do, what version are you using?
When I just got the phone, I had the same problem as you after I install a buggy version of CWM. Basically CWM made a backup to some folder that there's no way for you, CWM, or the system to tell where the heck it is.
I got rid of that by restoring my phone to stock then started using TWRP (try it, you'll like it)
Edit: Also, look at /data instead of /sdcard
/sdcard is an emulated folder, /data is more accurate since it's where stuffs are actually stored.
thats HUGE for system data. i only have 270MB used for it
Yeah I did but that was so long ago.. It could be that I guess. You suggest erasing the whole thing and restoring my apps?

Well, I got that back in CWM 6.0.1.6, which is like a month a go. A life time for the Nexus 4. There is a way to trace these folders using ADB, but I wiped my entire phone before I read the post so I don't know if the method works.
What I did was wiping everything (including system) then restore to stock. It was a little bit overdone, I guess restore to stock would do the trick. Just remember to back up /sdcard to your computer.
Edit: I was so annoyed by that wasted 1.7MB that I basically nuked the phone lol

If you are rooted and have adb set up on your computer, you can find out what folders are using the most space by using the commands below, then change into that directory and run the command again.
Code:
adb
su
cd /
du -hd 1
--find the largest folder and change directory (cd) into it - if you find you no longer want to continue in the folder you are in, you can cd .. to get to the previous folder or cd / to get back to the root of the filesystem--
Code:
cd large_folder
du -hd 1
rinse
repeat
????
profit
This will allow you to find what folders are using the most space and can eventually lead you to any large files and can then let you find out if you can delete them or if you need to keep them.

EDIT: Fixed - Flashed new CWM recovery and it WAS a backup i'd taken weeks ago.. deleted it and now have 200mb system data.

So is it safe to assume that the space is from backups? I posted my situation here
There didn't seem to be a clear answer here so :
System data is the space taken up by files outside of the special sdcard directory.
Android is treating the emulated SD card as being 8Gb/16Gb (- the hidden partitions) and not taking into account space taken up by files outside of the special directories.
In the Settings > Storage screen you will also notice that the free space and used space do not add up, this difference is the 'system data'.
Apps from Google and those with root access commonly write to directories outside of the sdcard.
Google Music is particularly guilty of taking up space without reporting it properly, from the Settings > Apps menu you can see how much space the music application is taking up, and clear it if desired.
Backups are also likely to be eating a large amount of that space, from CWM or TWRP or another source.
These are outside of the sdcard to prevent you from accidentally deleting them.
They can normally be move/removed from within the application that made them, or with a root file manager.
You probably want to keep some working backups, I generally store them on a cloud service or external disk with only the latest on the phone.
You will not get the 'system data' down to 0 as some space is for actual system files, you should be able to get it below 500Mb easily, or just be happy once you know where the space has gone.
I hope that helped.
