Not really knowing alot about my Vega or Windows 8 ( i just downloaded the developer preview for pc and will be installing shortly) , whats the chance in the future of a rom being produced to squeeze on the old Advent Vega...just asking...
I don't think its very helpfull to install windows 8. The vega only has 512 mb of RAM, so that's not much
Windows runs just fine in 512MB if you know what you're about. Someone on tinterwebs reports running Windows 8 in 256MB just fine.
But that's not the issue. The preview is for x86/64 only. ARM builds are likely to be released only via OEMs.
It's surely only a matter of time before 8 is released on ARM and someone rips it for devs to play with

is it good??
I can't see how anyone can tell whether Win 8 will be any good on an ARM tablet until there is a preview version for that processor, or at the very least a target minimum spec.

When the windows 8 was released and are able to support ARM processors, I was elated.
So I went about looking for ways to install and review the windows 8 for myself on my netbook. And I must say, I am pretty impressed so far.
The foot print of the platform is definitely smaller and the running of apps much more efficient than its predecessor OSs.
Now I am all hyped about wanting to port the windows 8 to my phone.
I was surfing around the web for installation info or guides to port the windows 8 onto my Omnia 8. But I cannot find anything useful.
Any one here knows how to do that?
Please advise.

Yeah... I know.
But I am sure the ARM version will be scaled down to fit mobile devices.
Take the tablets for example, if the windows 8 is not scaled down specifically for the ARM versions, a 16GB tablet would only have about 2GB of memory left after the windows 8 "Upgrade".
Then those who have 8GB tablets, would not be able to even consider installing windows 8 on them!
hmm... looks like we will have to wait for the mobile versions to be released.
Any news or rumours in the grapevine?
Have you guys learned anything more about the Windows 8 RT/mobile version. It would be really great if someone can port it to the Omnia 2.
Is there a way to boot windows developer preview on Samsung Galaxy Tab? I know, maybe the processor is not compatible but im asking only!
The ARM version has not been released yet, so - no, you cannot run WDP on Galaxy Tab.
and WHEN you get your ARM windows8, you just need all the SGT drivers compiled for ARM, and then ALL the windows x86 applications from the last 10 years time to properly use windows on your tablet, otherwise its just another helpless tablet with a Market just started with 5 apps available..
So no matter if windows8 gets to be released on ARM processor, you will have to wait just about 2-5 years before it becomes your pc replacement as all drivers and apps and developers are still x86 only..
So wait for the nvidia Tegra4 release in late 2012/2013 and you might even have a 8core platform ready for windows9 when its stable..

and you already got windows8 on a tegra device as Nvidia presented their tegra3 on it, so it works but do they have anything else but a OS?
With windows 8 now supposting ARM processors I was wondering if it would be possible to somehow flash the os onto the Iconia A500?

When they release the ARM version, hopefully someone here will figure out a way to get it onto our tabs. Since the ARM version will run on everything from cellphones to tablets, I'm pretty sure the A500 will have the hardware to run it. Since the only version of Win8 out is the X86 / X64 developers release version, we will have to wait for the ARM version to see for certain.
I can't imagine that the A500 will not have the capabilities to run win8, whether or not someone will port it over to our tabs is another story altogether.
Well then I cant wait for the ARM version. I have been running the x64 version on my laptop and I havta say its really nice. I really would like to dual boot it on my A500 with android. it just feels like it would be perfect for it.

If it does, it will big blow on the Android, because many of people will move to the W8.
I guess Android 4 is will come quicker than W8 for Iconia devices.

The "Developers Release" of Win 8 sux as far as the touch screen experience goes compared to Win 7 as of this time. Not sure if you're using it on touchscteen or not. Win 8 is far from release, but if we only believe half the hype, it should not only bring all the platforms together (which is Microsoft's intent), but should be pretty amazing (again, once it's finished).
Heya,
I was wondering, Is there any way to put windows 8 on acer tab A500?
Thank You

I still haven't seen anyone do that to an a500 - a w500 sure, but not on an a500. Not yet anyways.
Don't believe it will happen to be honest, There was the same question with win 7 on a galaxy tab. The hardware needs windows supported drivers, if you can't get drivers for windows then the hardware is useless...
Windows 8 is supposed to support ARM architecture, so you never really know.
That's what I've read as well but the driver... the drivers!
Who will think of the drivers!?

Win8 for the ARM architecture isn't even out yet in a DEV build AFAIK.
"Notebooks running Windows 8 on ARM processors rather than Intel or AMD x86 chips aren’t expected to hit the market until June 2013, insider sources have suggested, indicating Microsoft’s Windows on ARM project will lag considerably behind the mainstream build. The platform itself is tipped to go public at the end of 2012, DigiTimes‘ sources tell them, but with the first hardware not scheduled until midway through the following year, broad adoption isn’t seen until 2014 at the earliest."

i Have windows 8 on my HP Dm1 notebook... It runs great.. but as said above its not available for arm . WHEN Microsoft releases it There will be reference drives available for most popular Arm hardware.. this includes our tablet.
But until its released who knows..im guessing it will be mid year before there is going to be a win 8 arm.. But i also think that because of this new intel low power chip.. Microsoft could rethink there arm release if this chip provides what intel is claiming .

Unfortunayely the windows 8 dev release you have on your notebook is no where near what it will be at final release. I'm still waiting for my beta releases to start coming in, and can't wait!
Please have a look what they sayes on this website:

It just works..
abit slower than Win7 but of with updates arriving all the time."

Please Dont Brick your Tablet. We do Care
Op ..
i think you really should go back looking for a forum/ website that takes about the basics of computers and computer architecture. Please do so before you are here asking someone to help you UN BRICK your Iconia .That Site you list. I checked it out..it is refering to the ms install key maker program.. It says nothing anywhere on there about the iconia a500. other then uses it as a way to get you on THAT Site to look and and hope you click on one of its adds.. the key thing it repeates over and over .. x86 x86 x86.... and 32 bit 32 bit..
when you see that.. it puts the iconia OUT of its class of Devices to run such applications or OS...
Thanks for the information.. but again i stress PLEASE if you try this stuff and brick your tablet...I will say we Warned ya over and over again...
please dont take this to be offensive but you just DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT OR DEALING WITH.. LEAVE your tablet updates to Acer..
Welcome to XDA By the way....

I totally agree .. But i have been watching what intel is doing as well. They can be sneeky . I belive that Intel and amd. WILL soon be pushing chips that can compete with arm .im guessing it will be some type of hybrid apu. That will run in a state to handle static app like programs(for battery life) . that are linked to full blown business network capable programs such as ms office .This will allow on the go Battery life. the plug in to a full blown all out windows Computer experience.. From what i have read about windows 8 Laptops . this is the experience Ms Is currently working on with the windows 8 we can currently run .For most this will never go over well.Battery life and full blown programs NOT NET apps.. that is what PEOPLE Will Have to get TO MAKE Mobile devices work for most Business environments.
Just my Opinion.. But who really knows maybe a alien will bring something even better Giggles.
First of all, if there's already a thread about this, sorry I didn't see it but I searched.
My question is will there be a way to dual boot Windows 8 and ICS (or whatever Android we have during Win 8 tablet releases)? I've seen all the dual boot tablets introduced at Computex and INSTANTLY fell in love with the idea of having both the OS'es at my fingertips, but at the same time I know the official solutions will be unnecessarily expensive.
I was wondering if it's theoretically possible to buy a dedicated Windows 8 tablet, not the RT version, and eventually mod it to run Android. This will make my fall purchase of a tablet so much easier.
Not possible if the tablet has windows 8 ARM installed
If a tablet comes with Windows 8 ARM Preinstalled, you basically can't dual boot ICS on it. Why? Because Windows 8 for ARM requires the tablet manufacturer to enable secure boot on those devices. Thus, enabling secure boot won't let you dual boot Win8 and Android on it. Microsoft is very clever, they do really start to block linux and lock the tablets to Windows 8 ARM only.

Yes, you can run Android on x86, but many of the native apps won't work as they're made for arm processors. Take a look here: http://www.android-x86.org/
intel is putting its medfield CPUs, which are x86 atom-based SoCs, into android smartphones right now. Expect to see the same chips in W8 tablets. with that said, it should be fairly likely to see a dualbooting tablet.
also, i'd like to point you towards the Asus Tranformer AiO, shown off at Computex.

It's already been done on some PCs, Laptops, and including a windows tablet. Check it out here
Take note that this is only Android-x86. A ported version of android for x86 devices
You can find the Android-x86 project here
Here's what a tablet with Windows 8 RT inside http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR5Xh_1U35s
Would it be possible to run x86 windows 8 on the new medfield phones like the Orange San Diego and the Lava Xolo?
It would be interesting to run the metro ui on the smartphone itself but it will get better if you just hook up your phone to a monitor/laptop dock and enjoy a windows desktop experience (like the motorola atrix and this).
I have always been a fan of the OQO UMPC and this would be the modern version of that.
thank you
I have dual boot on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which has a x86 Intel processor) with Windows 8 Release Preview and Android ICS.
First I installed Win8 using a boot stick which you can create using this tool and the cd image you downloaded. Then I shrinked the size of the Windows partition to free up some space for Android.
Then I used the latest Atom image from Android x86 to install Android from another boot stick using this tool.
When installing Android don't forget to install GRUB boot loader.
Once you done that you can choose which OS to boot every time you start the device. Unfortunately it doesn't work using touch. You have to have a USB keyboard attached to choose the entry that is not default (in this case Windows 8).

I think running Win8 on a Phone with a x86 cpu like the medfield atoms from intel is possible, but you can't run metro apps on the phone's screen itself because the phone only has a resolution of 1024x600. Metro apps requires 1024x768 in order to run and in order to use "snap", a resolution of 1366x768 is required. So I think you need to hook up a mouse and a keyboard on the phone in order to enjoy the new metro feature of Windows 8 on a phone hooked up to your HDTV
