Rooting HBoot 89.0005 - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Tried Visionary (it hangs), and Cyanogen wiki guide (get error: "Failed to set prot mask (inappropriate ioctl for device)".
Is this unrootable? It's an insurance replacement that came with 2.3.4.

This is has been covered many times before. You cannot root 2.3.4. You must downgrade to 2.2.x then re-root the phone. Once that is done you can flash a 2.3.4 that has SU and Busybox kitchen baked into the ROM.

that thread as some good information in it.

Not allowing you to access the SDcard isn't a SU problem. There isn't anything in the rooting process that voids out the connection to the SDCard.
If you boot into recovery (assuming you have Clockwork) if you go to the mount options can you mount the SD card to the computer that way?

Does everything works with Toast's root method?
Considering Toast's method is the only way to load custom ROMs I think his is the clear winner.
I started off with Unrevoked's and it was great for things like Titanium backup, but I decided to follow Toast's guide and it was really pretty simple.

I cant use the adb with the evo, no matter what i do windows dont find the drivers.
If i root with toast method, do i need to flash a custom rom? does everything works on yours?
For the drivers you have to goto the htc sync folder on your sd card and install the htc sync program.

You can't flash custom ROMs with unrEVOked. Instant fail. I also like having my ROM actually rooted, and not just reliant on some other app.

I dont have any htc sync folder, do i have to?
The poll should read what is the best way not what did you use. It is misleading.
Toasts root is the best because of the recovery. That is needed for custom ROMs, nand backups, and a host of underthings.
A lot of people used unrevoked because it was easy and are new to android so they don't know the difference yet at least.
Toast method ftw! Been following his work since the hero. What's the point of rooting if you can't flash custom roms???

Did you format your sd card? you can just download it from htc. goto the evo support section at htc.com and it is in the download section.

I hope this isn't insulting but just to cover all the bases, you have USB Debugging turned on, right?
I had a Hero before this so I didn't have to mess with drivers and cannot remember exactly how difficult it was with the Hero. What Operating System do you have? You can easily find adb drivers by Googling.

Don't worry about it, you'll be flashing a ROM over it. I was using unrevoked before I did Toast's method and it went fine.
Did you flash back to the .1 shipped software (upgrade was the .6)?
Go toast! though unrevoked is nice for those who don't want to tinker too much with the phone but want root
Unrevoked by far. Very clean and simple.
To reverse it? takes 20 seconds..
The REAL winner is who gets r/w access. THATS a rooted phone in my opinion.
flashing custom roms is awesome, but what good is it if you can't r/w the system. pfft.
I have faith that all the devs working on r/w access will pull through. Your work is so very appreciated!

Recovery problems. ALL SORTED

ITS DONE AND DUSTED , I USED THE LINUX LIVE CD AND IT HAS WORKED.
Im tring to root my wildfire with unrevoked3 but it just says "pushing recovery image" and has been like that for 10mins, how long should it take?
Also before trying this I tried to install clockwork recovery with Rom manger only for it to reboot into recovery and quickly install maybe 25% then show a phone with a big red question mark then it reboots.
Also if I try to boot into recovery manualy I get a phone with a red triangle and a ! in it.
How can I fix the recovery?
in rom manager it says current recovery: clockwork mod 2.5.0.1
latest recovery: clockwork mod 2.5.0.1
Really need help , I want to jailbreak my ps3 , will donate if a DEV helps me.

Rooting: Help, can't get passed Step 6

Ok, I'm ready to root my phone and wanted to install CyanogenMod on my MyTouch 4g. I'm following their wiki document (can't post the link here, it won't let me), but can't get passed step #6. When I enter the string "adb push su /sdcard/su", I get "failed to copy 'su' to '/sdcard/su' : Permission Denied
I skipped down a few steps and tried the 3rd line, "adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage", it returned "5 kb/s (5392 bytes in 1.00s)." So that appears to have worked.
Any ideas?

Try using this method
Link to post
If you wish to use the CM method you need to download/install VISIONary, and temp root the phone phone with "set system to r/w" and "run VISIONary.sh" both checked marked. prior to doing anything.
IF the link i supplied earlier i would high suggest looking for the thread called "post your eMMC serial number" in the general section, some information you might want to read.

The link i posted will turn your s-off, so yes you can do what ever you want given you know what your doing.
just a side-note, once your s-off you can flash whatever MyTouch 4G ROM you want. Cyanogen or other.
just make sure to install the Recovery Image. That is where you flash stuff from.
and keep in mind that is a Wikipage, anyone can edit it. Someone may of removed it.
When you see a "permission denied", that means you have a lack of SU access. Visionary will restore that SU access.
Wow, thanks for the info. I think your few posts put all the research i've done into perspective. Just to clarify, when you say "install the recovery image," what exactly do u mean? Is that like running the ClockWorkMod Recovery in ROM Manager?

pretty much, you can download Clockwork ROM Manager from the market place and having it "flash the recovery image". Or if you are familiar with ADB you can download the image directly from Koush's website and flash it from the ADB command prompt.

Some phones are tricky and wont root with the same methods. If you are daring you may try gfree method, but again like above read the emmc serial thread to gain perspective on whats happening with supposedly inferior emmc chips.

Without sounding like a jackwagon. You might want to take a peek into the "post your eMMC serial number" thread under the general section. It's becoming obvious that if you cannot root with the root.sh method your phone might have a bad eMMC. I would highly encourage you to look into that, along with the thread in my signature to get ADB up and running to determine if you have a serial number for a problematic eMMC.
If you do have have a problematic eMMC, i wouldn't perma root it or flash a new ROM.

To All Those That Helped...
I was finally able to root my phone and start installing custom roms. In fact, I think I've turned into a ROM-Whore.
What I think did it, someone previous wrote, there seems to be a delay with the cache partition on the MT4Gs. So after I got S=off, I didn't immediately try and run Visionary again. Instead, I waited several hours (not by choice, something came up). When I attempted after that, whallla!
I've since been wiping and flashing, wow.
Now if I can get Swype to install.... LOL
I had trouble getting s-off with the unlockr,adb,wiki,z4root,newer visionary guides. Just gave up last night after that, he next morning did another search and found this link:

If its hboot 2.10 you need the unrevoked drivers, if 2.16 you need the revolutionary drivers.

Nexus 4 lost computer USB data connection ability

at some point in the last 6 months or so, my phone lost the ability to connect to my computer- I've tested by uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers on my computer, using virtual drivers, etc. Everything I could- I even tested on other computers that it has worked on in the past. Nothing helps.
I then decided it must be on my phones end, so I went so far as to replace the USB connection board inside my phone and that doesnt even work.
I used to have my phone rooted, but that was lost at some point over a couple OTA updates-- Is there anyway I can restore root access on my device without using a USB connection, or does anyone have any ideas on how to fix the connection issue?
Thanks!

please answer below question
1. what os use on your PC ?
2. do you install others driver beside google adb and fastboot?
3. what version of adb and fastboot you have if you have installed before
4. you said you have OTA udpate from gogole or form the ROM developer?
note:
you need to install latest adb and fastboot. latest version is .31
if you have other 2 or more driver installed before, it may crash or mis regonice the phone, like samsung and google driver for Galaxy nexus which i facing.
some help form external web here
I have same problem, i tried even on linux. What is worst i removed rom from sdcard and now my current rom crashed. When i try to pull new rom via adb, new file is created but is "empty". Usb otg doesn't work in recovery ;/
I am seeing the same thing also. I even bought a USB replacement part on ebay and installed it. The PC still doesn't see the device.
