I "developed" a problem with Auto Rotation after calibrating my horizontal and gyro sensors. If I enabled it everything except the home screen flipped straight into landscape. I have spent six hours trawling the web and every possible forum trying to find a solution, and having found none that worked, including re-calibrating and factory reset (ouch!) I decided it was a hardware problem and I was going to return the phone and get something else.
Please save yourself the bother and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS for calibrating the sensors. It says PLACE THE PHONE ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND TAP CALIBRATE. Simples. That means place it flat on a table or something. Do not hold it upright in your hand, or upright on a mantlepiece or any other position. Put it screen up, camera down on a flat level surface and press calibrate.
It took me six hours to figure that out. Its just a damn shame that phone users like me are not as clever as the phones we use. And what a great bit of kit the S2 is. Put it down to user error. If you have had this problem, and this is the solution, and you now feel like a tit, join the club.
lol, made me laugh, how else would you have calibrated the sensors if not by just placing you phone down face up?
Make me wonder how people can get confused by such a simple task.
It took me 0.1 second to figured it out...lol
I still have the problem of home screen and application screens not rotating while oter screen rotate no problem.
I have enabled autorotate both in settings and dropdown menu.
I have calibrated gyro and horizontal settings.
I have run *#0# and run all tests on gyro etc and all work including the nice little chihuahua rotating etc.
I have installed numerous ROMS both stock and customised, with odin and via cwm but the rotate in home eludes me. Whereas my son's untouched phone works brilliantly.
I think mine went belly up after installing Villain Rom 3 but then again I can't be sure.
Anyone any other ideas?
Sounds to me like a hardware problem, as if you have used many different roms, factory reset to do so etc, it's the only logical conclusion. Therefore to fix it send it on to repairs

@midjet: rotate in home you say? You mean the home screen? As far as I know, if you're running the stock touch wiz launcher, it DOESN'T rotate on the home screen. If you're running a third party launcher, like launcher pro or adw, you may need to turn it on in settings.
If your son's rotates on the home screen, then it is highly unlikely it is untouched.

Bloody good point mate, I am using TSF shell so it does not rotate at all either, did think of the homescreen app?
You were lucky. I think jtag was the next option
Thanks for sharing. Good giggle I had.
Full stop.
Thanks for all the replies.
My son won't let me near it, he is frigtened to lose warranty LOL
He will have a launcher running which may account for the rotate I suppose but it defo isn't rooted or customised ROM
My phone rotates fine everywhere else ie when running games or using web browser, even when in setting so I am inclined to think hardware is also fine.
Perhaps as mattisfaction says it never rotates in home screen.
Thanks for input guys...appreciated

hmmm, how long your phone take to rotate the screen since you flip your phone? Mine is approximately 1 second. Is that normal?
it also happened to me on my galnote n7000, damn.. #lol
but thanks for writing your story hahahahahahha

Sorry if this should be posted here but Ive been switching around with all the builds and I have found that with all the builds if I disable auto rotation in system setting I do not get the touchscreen issues ever and Ive been running them for like 3 plus days with heavy texting. However, when I turn it on I get occasional freezing. Just putting this out there so others can try it and see if it works for them too.
Interesting, I've seen other people reporting similar things, going to try it! Thanks!
What is the fix?

Maybe its a rom and build combo plus the auto rotate that makes it work similar to the robot voice
Wow, this one actually worked for me! My screen had stopped registering fast swipes, but I checked this off and now it is! It's even working when I put auto-rotate back on. (It'll probably crap out again, but we'll see).
EDIT: I just noticed that this is the HD2 board :O I have a Sensation. It still worked though. Thanks!
I just picked up the Streak today from Best Buy. Once I saw the $50.00 price and realized I could update to 2.2 right away, it was a no brainer, so I thought....
I am actually digging the Streak, if I can get a few things worked out. I am coming from the Captivate which I just recently upgraded to Froyo. I actually love the Captivate now that it has 2.2. I just love the screen size of the Streak more!
FWIW, it looks like the Froyo that I installed is not the AT&T version. I dont see any of their bloatware. Is this good or bad?
The problems I am encountering with the Streak are, backlit buttons do not light up when touching the screen. They only light up when I touch them, which defeats the purpose of backlighting. I also dont see any provisions for mobile AP or tethering. I thought that, even though they may be locked, that they are part of Froyo and should be there? Same with "power widget"??? that is normally above the pull down notification window? You know, where you turn on/off GPS, WIFI, bluetooth? I don't have it. The other thing that came with Froyo on the Captivate but not on the Streak was the Task Manager. Should that be there?
After updating and setting up most everything, it started getting a little buggy. Screen orientation was doing weird things and locking up. Wifi seemed real slow, after being super quick. I went ahead and did a factory reset and I am still having the same issues. I have not noticed any orientation issues YET. BTW I have never rooted a device. I am not against doing it if it fixes things but I prefer to stay stock. Any help is greatly appreciated.
It probably is stock 340 if you did the ota update which is at&t version of froyo for the streak. If you want to tether try barnacle always worked for me. You will have to sideload it because at&t blocks some apps in the market. When i had my captivate i learned a nifty lil trick you can put your phone in airplane mode then turn on wifi go search the market for the at&t blocked app and it would show up worth a try. The power widget on the phone long hold the screen and check widgets.recalibrate your screen that will help don't realy know how to post links so (search, search, search) everything you need to know can be found here on xda its the best site ever hope that helps you some. Remember search i cant stress enough how important it is. Alot of smart people on here i learn something new on xda everyday.
I came from a captivate....
the buttons in the drop down are part of samsung touchwiz and not android itself.
you can get the same desired effect with more buttons using Power Control Plus.
Thanks guys for your help. How about the backlit buttons that don't light up when touching the screen? Is that normal? Also, can the haptc feedback be lowered?
I just turn the feedback off i havent really paid any attention to the lights but i will now. if u root just use superoneclick v1.7 works great just get the right dell drivers.
There is only 3 buttons, so it isn't difficult to memorize where they are after 2 days of use.. I personally like the buttons off...
Dell's version of froyo does not have alot of the features that the Samsung roms have. There is no vibrate intensity setting, no font changing setting (use font changer from market).
I just got 2.2.2 loaded and that has the option to make a sound when you unlock the streak.
You sacrifice a few options with the streak, but it is rock solid stable and doesn't need any tweaks besides spare parts windows and transition options set to fast. so it is lightening fast.
I think I have found the problem. It looks like the light sensor is bad or a software issue that is causing the sensor not to work. On auto brightness it does nothing. I called Dell and they confirmed that the buttons should light up when the screen is touched. and that it is likely a defective sensor. I am going to return it for a new one. On a positive note, the screen had been running at only 1/4 brightness. Display looks MUCH better now that I have turned up the brightness a bit.
In the past few days, my keyboard has been acting up. I've been using Smart Keyboard pro since the day I got my phone and LOVED it, but for the past few days, it's been acting the bollix. Basically, I could be pressing the delete button for maybe 4 or 5 times, and it would enter 2 z's and delete 3 charachters?
I thought that it might just be the keyboard, so I switched to the default one, and it did happen, but not as much. I have just installed the Gingerbread Keyboard from the market, and it seems to be working ok, but it's still annoying. Anyone else had any problems with their keyboard entering random letters?

Try removing the factory installed screen protector... it does wonders for touch sensitivity and brightness of the screen. I highly recommend it.

already done that
I too have had this problem twice now.
The first fix was to install Gingerbread Keyboard and it seemed to fix.
Then i had the same problem again (If i pressed "p" it would also press "t" and pressing "delete" would also press "c") and fixed it by cleaning the screen with a wet wipe.
The problem for me when it happens is basically when you press the right hand side of the screen in landscape mode, it also think you are pressing the middle of the screen at the same time.
Its only happened twice so im not all that bothered.
Try cleaning the screen with wet wipe and see if it fixes.
I've been using swype...and as cool and innovative as it is...I'm always having to double our triple check my text msgs and posts...lately I've been having to correct my corrections..its a bit ridiculous so I'm trying to get into the habit if reading what I type every few words..

I just posted a thread about a multitouch issue on the xperia play. I think it may be causing your problems. It may not make sense what I am saying right now but if you read my thread it might make sense.
Basically when you are typing fast you will definitely have 2 touch points on the keyboard. and the Xperia Play is counting more than 2 touch points. So your third touch maybe registered as a 3rd finger.
Here is my post if you want to take a look
OK. I've just cleaned the screen with a wet wipe. I'm going to post this message and leave it if it makes any incorrect entries.
Seems to have worked. I will now try landscape orientation.
OK, so portrait seems to have worked well enough. I'm trying out the landscape input now. Seems to be working. I was kinda worried about this problem, but cleaning the screen seems to have sorted it out.
Also, I have installed swype, but I do not really like it. Its awkward. I used to love it on my WinMo 6.1 phone (Omnia) however, I do not feel that i should be restricted to what keyboard I can use because of the phone not responding to input properly.
Back to portrait, OK. Seems to have worked. Nope, its doing it again now. Dunno why?

I have a question.
Is this problem consistent like it happens every single time or does it come and go?
I personally use swype and I love it. I have not had this problem yet.
It's not a software problem, it is hardware.
When mine has had the problem, it does it on stock keyboard, chinese keyboard and gingerbread keyboard.
Basically, for me, when i touch the furthermost right hand side of the screen in landscape mode, it also registers as touching in the middle of the screen too.
Well it only started happening in the past few days. I'm gonna reflash back to 2.3.3 stock and see does that fix the issues. If not what's everyone's suggestions?

Well that was just my theory to the OP. The multitouch problem does exist but I thought the problems with the OP's keyboard was related to this. Turns out its not.
I flashed CM7 and haven't experienced this problem yet, but I'm sure I will at some stage... *sigh*
So I used to run /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha as root to get a more precise horizontal calibration (the option in setting seemed to do nothing). However after upgrading to GB it seems like this executable has been removed and the option is settings still didn't seem to solve my issue. Is there another alternative on a stock GB rom? Maybe they renamed the app?
Download GPS Status from the Market. When you open the app, go to settings. There is an option to calibrate compass. Worked great from mine. Mine is spot on now.
Is there really no longer a built-in calibration app in system settings? Mine worked fine although the phone had to be upside-down like many other people's while using it.

No the built-in Settings -> Display -> Horizontal Calibration still exists. My statement was that it never really worked for me and still doesn't. The only reliable way I had to calibrate was by running the aforementioned yamaha application while running as root.
I've tried the upside down trick and I still get jitters. For instance Words with Friends randomly shakes the tiles, even if my phone is sitting on a table. It's not so bad w/ GB as it was when I got the phone originally but I was able to solve it under Froyo with the yamaha tool and don't seem to have that option in GB :-(

Yeah, I used to use /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha as well, and it worked very well for increasing the speed/sensitivity of rotation, but seems to be gone in CM7 (Which is built upon AOSP GB 2.3.5). I brought it up in another topic & one of the devs (I forget who) said that there is no known fix right now.
I'll try offtohavasu's tip, but I'm not gonna hold my breath! I've used it before with no success, but I haven't tried it with CM7 yet. Cross your fingers that this is the fix we need!
EDIT: no luck. I tried both the "Compass calibration" (which I didn't expect would do anything for rotation speed/sensitivity, but I tried anyway) and "Calibrate Pitch and Roll," and neither one had any impact.
not working for me either.
My rotation lag is terrible as well, and the upside down / display calibration option has not fixed it. I thought it was just me as this popped up on the last two GB leaks for me. I would love to be able to rotate my phone properly again.
Hate to tease but if I had a computer I could probably whip up a possible fix if I had my computer:/
Sent from my Samsung Legen-wait for it-dary! 4g
This certainly seems to be somewhat hardware related (as in, variations in production quality). I had issues back on Eclair or one of the first froyo leaks, including the bacwards compass that initially lead me to the upside-down calibration discovery, but my rotation speed has been fine since sometime around the release of EC05.
But how long of a delay do we each define as lag? When I had issues, I actually had to shake the phone to get the rotation to register... now, it still hesitates for about a second, but I see that at as a check to make sure it was an actual rotation instead of an incidental, momentary tilt of the phone - I would be annoyed if my screen rotated every time the motion sensor detected the slightest movement
Edit: a full second is an exaggeration, I'm seeing more like half a second of hesitation... Just trying to remain accurate
2nd edit - damn swypos, lol

Dear all,
i have a Dell Streak 5, with following specs:
Android Version: 2.2.2
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-perf
Build Nr: 15609
The issues are:
- If i use the phone on my pocket with screen to my leg, when i need to unlock screen, i usualy can't, its kind of crashed...
- If i have the wireless ON, and go out from home, usually phone crashes , and when i go to use it, i see there was a reset. Seems that this wireless is kind of instable and make mobile phone crash.
I would like to upgrade something to try to solve this small issues, can anybody help me?
Thank you
Tiago
I forgot:
Baseband Version: GAUSB1A135100-EU
thanks.
I don't know what to tell you as far as wifi crashing your phone. That's never happened to me. As far as the other issue, seems pretty common. I think the recommended "fix" is to not carry it with screen facing your leg. I'm sure that's not what you want to hear....but its the best I got.
i can't explain why you wifi makes your phone crash, but for the impossibility to unlock the screen. i had the same problem, and somebody told me the problem was the heat of the leg that makes the screen tilt. so i bought an otterbox case with a belt clip, so with the screen untouched it works perfectly.
for the screen against leg issue, I just toggle the power off then on and it works.
yes, i agree to lordmorphous, don't face your screen to your leg..
just in case, you may try to calibrate it, or if the problem still, maybe you can re-flash to another latest stock rom.
I have never experienced the screen issues involved with facing the screen towards my leg, and I always put my Streak in my pocket with the screen facing my leg. I guess so far I've gotten lucky.

The ROM makes no difference. I run 360 on my Streak.
I met a guy in a train station, and since there are not a lot ppl with such mob, i decided to ask. In fact, with screen faced outside, the issue finished. Strange..
Related with stock ROM, i think this is my next step: upgrade! the process dell.com.blablabla is always crashing, and sometimes i need to wait to use the phone. awww, not to say that i can't synch with my outlook
I am a bit disappointed with this phone/tab, i was expecting that it could work better.
Any tips on ROM? I am actually trying to use titanum backup to backup data, but it says again cannot root! How i root it?
Thanks again.

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Streak But Were Too Busy Bricking It
That link there is your first step, for it explains how to root and how to do various other things. Now...I tend NOT to recommend using Titanium Backup since in my experience it screws up when restoring items. Your mileage may vary.
As to a ROM, stick with a stock ROM for now until you are comfortable with the rooting process. I have attempted to use GingerStreak but had a problem with the camera app so I had to go back. Flashing a ROM could fix your issues since a bad flash has been known to be source of the force closes.
Hi again,
finaly i tried a simple method: the gingerbreak, and rooted. Now that is rooted, i want try a diff Android version (from 2.2 to 2.3?).
Is there any recommendation?
Of course first i would like to backup all the data (already from the SDCard) but i am talking about the ContactList (i tried to use the simple: export, but onde again i got an error :/)
Any tips?
Thanks for all the help.

I've been having lots of little problems too.
My device randomnly decideds to restart time to time. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it that I've worked out yet. But it's crashing right now and I have to soft reset it.
Another thing, if I have it in normal landscape mode but turn it on while holding it portrait mode or the screen isn't in the same orientation that it was before the screen turned off, Dell Stage often crashes.

Exactly, mine restart very often too, but i think i know why. Try disable wireless before leaving your "home network"... in my case, it solves that crashings... only crash if dell stage crashes too... but most of times, its solved.
The only "bugs" i have are: camera button does not work, and when i turn screen on, the "unlock slide button" is ALWAYS in the portrait position.
I wonder, if this is solved with a new android version, or dell "libraries" update?
Thanks.

Calibrating the screen was what i've done when i could not unlock my mob phone for 1 week, i was desperate
After that, i solved all the screen issues using screen outside and not against leg.
