G2 insanely hot battery

I am running CM7 nightlies on my G2, a few days out dated because I have been insanely busy lately... But today in class my phone heated up insanely bad. Sizzled my finger on the metal back plate. I immediately ripped the battery out and let it cool. I think the battery bloated a little bit.
When I put it back in after cooling, all seems normal. The battery started out at 85% and drained to 44% during this. All I can think is that I charged it on the way home to top it off from about 50 to 85% battery, and then topped off a little more, bout ten minutes while at home. Got back to class and then it happened a few minutes later.
Also, I used SetCPU....BUT not overclocking, I had it stock speed, on demand governor, and screen off profile to 245mhz.
What could cause this? I called tmobile and they wanna swap out the phone itself because the battery is not currently bloated so it must be device related.
I am scared to let them swap it out, because I don't wanna revert my phone back to stock, and then have to root the new one. Are ALL G2's rootable? I don't want to risk getting a new one that can't be cracked

That's really odd...maybe the phone had a defect or something but yes all G2s can be rooted/s-off since we haven't had any new updates from t-mobile to prevent us from rooting the phone

That makes me feel better, if I have to replace.
They were going to call me in 20 minutes after I started charging it during the initial call, but they called my wife's Vibrant which never rang, I just got a voice mail notification They left message, and I have no way of calling that particular rep back in technical without going through the entire process over again But, it's still charging, went from about 35%-80% and it's not hot at all. I'm just very confused how this is an isolated thing.
I'm about to be gone from home for 5 weeks, and need my phone, Worst timing ever for this

Ah I see... anyways just tell the new rep, tell that you already called another rep and was about to give you a replacement but something happen or something... it will make the process faster. when will you leave? T-mobile can send you the replacement phone if you pay 20$ it will get to your house in 1-3 days rather than the normal 3-7 days

I'm just wary to change the entire phone out and keep the part that scares me into the new one. If I have a problem, I'll call them. It seems to have been just that once. I'll be leaving in about a week probably, and phone is vital. so I hope I get this figured out.
Do NAND backups swap to new phones? Like just NAND this one how it is, and stick it onto my replacement? Or does it backup things specific to that exact phone?

Once you get your new replacement you have to reroot/S-off your phone again and flash clockwork. If you have any backups in your sd card just flash your backup and you will have the same stuff you had on your old phone.

Full charged, no issues... so I'll just keep a really good eye on it. I'm just wondering WTF made it do that. I'm kinda wary to run setCPU now

I used to OC to 1.5ghz all the time but not in a long time I need it to get the best battery life possible these days

Aha I see. Well what I do is I put it 1.5 ghz but on ondemand. Never gets hot at all but when I put it on profomance it heats up quickly. Lol have u tried MUIU? Its pretty good.

Either the battery itself is fried, or some SOFTWARE you're running is responsible. Swapping out the phone itself is pointless. Try a WIPE and see if the problem doesn't come back. If it does, replace the BATTERY.

I didn't read if yo ugot it fixed, but check your battery status... liek what's been using that. I had that one time and like my email app for example used a **** load... I reflashed it and started it from new and it's fixed now.

exactly what is the point of overclocking on the G2?
I can tell why youd use SetCPU on the G1 but what is the point of doing it on the G2?
I really have failed to understand the purpose.

Yes, except that sometimes these hacks can cause problems, so before concluding that the hardware is defective, it is important to return the software to a more natural state and see if the problem goes away. If the problem is present with the hacks and not when without, then it is reasonable to conclude that there is a correlation between the problem and the hack.

For the record, tmobile concluded that it's hardware, not me *can't exactly say I have it fully rooted/modded* and the only reason I called them was that my wife used to work for verizon and it was a known issue that a certain battery style/make/whatever was known to have this exact issue. So she told me to call and ask if it was some known problem that I could tell them my serial to identify if my battery falls under those conditions. They said since it wasn't still bloated by the time I called them, it must be the phone. I talked them out of sending me a replacement... that I'll see if it comes back and immediately call them lol.
I haven't had the issue come back, I think I'm on Nightly 3, and I'm about to flash the latest but I want the battery more charged before I do so. I got like 3x the battery life today than I did the other day.
For whoever asked, I haven't tried MIUI, looks pretty interesting but I'm quite a die hard Cyanogen guy lol. I wish it came to the vibrant

Secondary battery

Has anyone tried buying a non official battery for their MS2 and care to comment or recommend any? Im going on holiday to france and i know my phone wont last a whole day without charging, so I was thinking of buying a second battery.

I read in another forum that using a non-Motorola battery displays some kind of warning. I'd go with an original battery.

using a non-original battery could have detrimental effects on your phone. there was a discussion on this on the forum of another phone. using a non-original battery could lead to leaks and other problems which would eventually lead to the warranty of your phone being voided.
stick with original motorola products. yes the battery might be very underpowered, but its the safest bet to ensure the longevity of ur phone

With a non original battery, the battery indicator of your phone shows a interrogation symbol. Also, it does not charge with the phone charger.

I 'm using a non-original battery . The MOMAX and everything's good ,it feels just like the original one except for battery tempperature sensor. the temp is always 26 in celsius

I personally have used seidio for my milestone and it works like a charm, its the extended 2800mah one it really performs like it should and not like how a lot of people claim thats its way less than stock! It does not always read it correctly but a quick reboot fixes that, like 50% after reboot would usually be about 70-80%. They way i used to use my phone (light to moderate level) would last about 2-3 days but after the extended I got twice that and some more. Just make sure you get stuff from the original manufactures either way and don't go for deals at amazon or whatnot as those guys might be selling either defected or not proprely stored stuff. Batteries are critical components don't go cheap on them! And no, my phone has not been messed up or had any leaks or anything and I have this for about 3-4 months now. The original battery degraded in about 6months if you have to compare.

That sounds promising, does the battery need to be charged with an external charger? And does the milestone complain that you are not using the official bettery

reebooting your phone to get the exact picture also works on the standard battery. my question is, does the back part which houses the battery heat up when used? does the phone get hot during charging? do you need a new battery cover for it? and besides the longer usability, have you noticed any other performance issues on the phone?

Actually the rebooting to get the exact picture is not the same here, a jump to 20-30% on a stock battery? I don't think so. No I never encountered any odd behavior with the other battery. No getting extra hot during charge or use, get the typical little bit of heat while using 3G and browsing like mad but that would happen on the stock battery too. Battery cover for a 2800? of course, that stuff is huge! its protrudes like mad! a quick heads up though, the extended battery for the milestone 1 and 2 can use the same extended batteries. Don't know about the droid x though. Anyways, no performance issues, no heat while charging. The back covers supplied by these after market guys are not the best quality though so if you are someone who loves dropping phones and what not would recommed getting a spare back cover from the guys you get the batts from.

No, I use my original charger and no complains or warnings by the phone. Not on the milestone 1 at least. In fact some times i use my ipod's adapter so no big issue. And it charges at the same pace as the stock, additional 1 hour or whatever. restart the phone to getting a proper reading as it shows 100% but upon restart its 70-80% since only the stock level is charged. I hear this app called battery left does great for calibration.

ALSO a thing to note, I only know of Seidio and Mugen to be relialbe after market battery guys hence their hefty pricing at times. The others claiming to have bigger batteries have cheated people with stickers and what not and usually end up underperforming and degrading considerably faster than burning paper! I remember 1USD batteries for nokias back in the day good for a quick one time run i suppose but these 1USD guys are now selling them with a better branding for like 20-40 USD.
Anyways Sedio and Mugen have facebook profiles and keep people posted on the latest on devices usually there, although its kind of sad since seidio have not followed through promised products at times.

Thanks for the info i have bought a Seidio Innocell Extended Life for Motorola milestone 2 from mobilefun £30.49 its the 1500mah version same size as original battery so no extra cover is required.

Cool but as I suggested try and get them off the manufactures themselves as I have noticed some people complaining when purchased via 3rd party retailers.
Also another bud of mine had picked up one for the Nexus one, that phones back cover is a full one unlike the moto's and he too can vouch for the products positive performance. Either ways also check out some reviews from amazon.com for peace of mind.

is the battery meter being shown or are you getting an error message because i would like to buy one

No complaints from the phone about it being the incorrect battery the battery has been charged within/by the phone no external charger required. I got the 1500mah version from mobilefun I doubt it will give much more performance but will see.

After my first day of use I got around 11 hours of use before reaching 5%. Here are the usage statistics at 15%

Wifi was on most of the time, I was using my phone for the usual things. Occasionally checking socialfeeds, engadget, xda every hour or so and internet browsing I played 10 minutes of angry bids. Updated some apps and downloaded a few new ones.
Overall not a significant increase in battery life maybe an hour or so more from what I am used to.

Killed my S2..

I have managed to kill my S2 by playing far too much Hot Springs Story (great game!)
While playing (we're talking a good couple/few hours), I noticed that even though when the phone is connected to the supplied charger, the handset requires more current than this is able to provide, and still discharges the battery (albeit, much slower).
I got a couple of 'battery temperature too high or too low, charging has been paused' while playing, as the phone was sat on my desk, I thought nothing of it.
The next morning I saw the handset had the same battery warning on screen, and was almost completely discharged (although the handset was still on). I knew something was not right then.. The phone was very hot in the casing to the right of the battery (when looking at it from the back). I guess this is where the charging circuit is, but I really dont know.
I couldnt get the battery to charge any more than a few seconds, either when the phone was booted into Android or in its off state. I managed to reload stock KE7 (which was already installed) just to see if it made a difference, it didn't :-/
The phone then refused to co-operate with the battery at all, and simply displayed a yellow exclamation mark next to the empty battery graphic on screen.
I bought a new spare battery of ebay, hoping that the intense discharge/recharge cycle had just wrecked the original battery, but unfortunately the replacement only charged for ~5-10minutes before showing the same yellow exclamation mark :-/ I guess its the charging circuity thats failed.
The handset was from O2 on PAYG, I debranded it by putting stock KE7 on it, and a few counts on the custom kernel flash counter, I'm hoping I can warranty it without too much hassle, but I am a bit anxious that technically O2/Samsung dont have to honour the warranty.. I'll let people know how it goes..

hmm, that sucks. so it does really overheat when charging... wow, that sucks a lot! normally when the battery is full, it stops charging and the temperature returns to normal, even though it is connected to the charger.
i guess the same could potentially happen while on a trip and charging/consuming battery using satnav, or listening to music.
not good.

Nothing you did (except rooting) is extraordinary use. They promote its use for games and that's what you were doing. I'm guessing Samsung Tech will probably just replace the phone rather than try and repair it. Good luck.

i got my phone about 1 week ago and only charged it about 6 - 7 times since i got.
Well on my second charge the battery was on zero phone turned off so i connect it to the wall charger and i got the yellow exclamation mark!!!! took the battery off put it back on and it started charging.
And just than on my 7-8th charge my phone was out of battery off so i decided to charge it off my laptop and i connect it to see i get the yellow exclamation mark again while phone is off. But this time i took the battery off put it back in wouldn't work. So i kept trying it after about 5 mins of connecting disconnecting the cable i managed to get it to start charging. (this time at work so had no power point charger)
EDIT: Australian Optus branded phone with no firmware change (still stock, no root, nothing).

Sorry to hear this mate. I also noticed the battery going down faster than it was charging, while playing Retro defense. And the device was getting really hot. If this can damage the phone then I'll stop playing that much with it.
Maybe you have a faulty one?

Here is my finding regarding heat
While running some tests for the robo defense dev to provide a log file so that he can get the freezing issue addressed, i did notice that my phone was getting extremely hot.
I've played plants vs zombie, grave defense hd, etc on charger and i've never gotten close to the heat felt through the phone today once robo defense frozed and i didn't close the app for a good while to create a log dump using adb
Could it be possible that some of these rogue apps are driving the device to 100% usage causing it to heat up?

how hot is extremely hot? The hottest I caught mine at was 48°c. That was while playing a game and charging at the same time

I think that is EXACTLY what's going on... I truly believe some of these games are either not written or optimized for this phone's dual core processor. I can play most games with no problems, including some of the bigger Gameloft games. But, there are a select few games that get the device way too hot for my liking... like Sky Force Reloaded. I have never played it completely through because I can feel just how hot the phone gets even through the case.
I think these issues will be ironed out in time, but definitely app dependent right now.

Definitely true for me. I can play many games for an extended period of time. Plants Vs Zombies, Death Worm, even something graphics intensive like Modern Combat 2 is no problem. But, if I play 10 minutes of Bonzai Blast it's radiating heat and the battery has lost 10%.

Sorry to read this mate.
On a side note, they say 2.3.4 will utilise Galaxy 2's hardware better, it will be more battery efficient and not overheating as much... So until then it may be a good idea not to "abuse" it too much (I know it sound crazy, but hell...)

Quick update:
I've returned the phone to the O2 store today for repair.
This was in its debranded state with the stock KE7 firmware installed, and I think 5 custom kernel install counts.
I think I could have got it back to stock by borrowing a friends charged battery, reinstalling stock rom, and then usb jigging it back to 0 custom kernel installs, but I thought I might as well 'take one for the team' and use this experience to test how flexible Samsung's repair shop is when dealing with handsets like this (HTC repaired my unlocked Nexus one without any fuss)
I've been *very* impressed with Samsung's dev friendly attitude so far, they're not only setting the standards in Android hardware used, but also with how their company recognises the wants of its consumers. I'm sure I won't be disappointed..
Should know in about 7 days!

Its often down to the tech that picks the phone up some may just flash the stock rom and not bother others as been posted might be more picky .
As per the O2 store that refused warranty on my SGS1 .
Unlocking will not void any warranty as O2 offer the service themselves as do all networks .

Quick update, still under repair.
It came back once with a letter saying that they (o2) replaced the circuit board, but it was still broken.
It then got sent off again, and I've been told today that its come back from repair with a letter that only says 'BER', which means Beyond Economic Repair apparently.. so they're (the o2 shop) are sending it back for a repair team leader to look at now :-/

BER is actually good news. You'll probably get a new phone. I doubt at this point the team leader's going to say anything about your mods. He'll probably just rubber stamp it.

Not possible for developers When developing an app, the handset will be 'always on', charging, and being used for 8hrs+ all at the same time!
Addictive Japanese quasi-RPG games are a separate matter though..

Pocket legends is a killer. On it for five min n phone got really really hot. Checked temp n it was 44 degrees... Not good

i'm getting worried after reading here. last time i used with google navigation and charging same time, battery heat went over 50°c and it was really hot..
and that was just for one hour google navigation.

Critical battery temperature

Hey. Does someone you know, what is the highest (read: critical) battery and HW temperature in this phone? I am a little bit scared when I'm getting even 55*C on battery when I am using it as a navigation connected to charger in a car. I know it's too high because when it's heating over 49*C it stops charging. My question is how dangerous is such high temperature for HW and Battery? Is it normal behavior?

I never had such high temperatures, and I live on a hot country (Brazil). Try to check apps running in background, or, if you are using 3G and charger, it can get really hot. But I think it's normal, since my phone reaches 45ºC while charging, and I don't use 3G.

with 3g my phone gets crazy hot. i once left it on overnight (it didnt go to sleep) and when i woke up it felt dangerously hot, musta been 50deg or something
otherwise, with wifi it just gets warm... still worrying though, considering none of my other portable devices have ever gotten this hot before... just shows where all of the battery life goes to! :S
i dont think its the battery getting hot though, it must be the cell chip. my batt temps are usually pretty low, and the batt itself doesnt seem to get hot. its just the panel above the battery that warms up

My phone got so high temperature (55*C) when I was using navigation. Moreover it was pluged to the car charger (but wasn't charging because of high temperature) and mounted to the window in hot sunny day. And I'd like to know how dangerous is such high temp. for the device.

Agree with scott. With prolonged use my battery doesnt heat up, just the panel above the battery (where the camera is)
And my battery life sucks too. Gotta keep it charged in the car for even short (30 min) trips with navigation

Try checking the manual (if there is) for operating temperatures etc.
I'm not exactly sure of how it'll affect the phone but it poses health problems due to higher radiations.
Try preventing this by ensuring all other (running) apps that you don't need are closed by using a task killer and all connectivity stuffs (eg. bluetooth, data sync) ESPECIALLY THE BACKGROUND DATA if you don't need it. Also, if possible try to refrain from covering the back panel (mainly the area near the camera) and allow ventilation to let it cool so it won't overheat.
What else I do is leaving the keyboard opened so there's even more surface area for it to cool.
The problem isn't just about damage, but that you don't want to be holding hot metal.
Yes it sucks but its a price to pay for such high specs packed in such a tiny casing.
My friend who owns Samsung Galaxy II has his phone heating up even more frequently and quickly, so we're not the only ones

Its annoying because we know its avoidable and shouldnt have been allowed in the final design by motorola

I've never seen such high temperatures with my M 2.
Highest was 47ºC while charging and playing a game. It usually sits around 35-36ºC idle, and 40-42º during games.

That's normal guys... Every device dying in a "few minutes" with 3G. And U know what? From my last 3 devices which I have been using to surf in the Internet with 3G (Moto RIZR Z8, Nokia N86, Moto Milestone 2), MM2 lasts the longest.

Yesterday my milestone 2 became hotter as ever, just above the battery (where the camera is, like newbietown). First I turned it off, but it stayed hot even then. After I removed the battery it became cool again.
But! Now my MS2 is completely dead...
It's really not turning on again, and charging is really weird (irregular flashin led). And my warranty is void because of me installing argen2stone I guess ..

Well, just flash a stock rom and they'll never know...

My phone is not recognized on my computer using USB . Can I still use rsd lite?

First get to bootloader mode: Power + Volume Up (or down) + Camera
If battery is too low you'll need to buy a relacement or a external charger.

Try taking it to warranty. Argen2Stone is so lightly modded, maybe they won't mind it. Anyway, you have nothing to lose now. And this really looks like a HW problem, not SW

Beginning of next week I will hand it in for warranty. I think it has something to do with the power circuit in the phone. Sometime i've used HTC chargers (1A) instead of the motorola charger (0,85A).. That could be the cause Hopefully they cannot see that.

I don't think that's a problem. I always use a Nokia charger, I find the original charger too short, the Nokia has a good lenght. And I never had problems with overheating. Also, 1A is the maximum current that the charger can provide, not the nominal [email protected] anytime

Solid amber then nothing

Any help here appreciAted all the sudden my shift won't charge I plug it in and get a solid amber light for 5 seconds then nothing. Tried various chargers Anne removing as still nothing.

try a battery pull and try again

Tried removing battery SDcard still solid then off

Check the charger port. If you keep your phone in your pocket like I do, you get lint build up. I've already had to clean mine out twice. I used compressed air, and was very careful.

Tried charger port looks clean used air did try to turn it on while amber light was solid iT began to then shut off

try a different mini usb cord, see if that works. It could be a bad cord...

Also tried different cord combinations USB>AC USB>Pc etc to have same result plug in a few seconds Later I get solid amber for about 5 seconds then it goes off. Have to unplug and remove battery and replugin to get it to recognize anything again.

Can you clear battery stats? Long shot, but you never know...

All I can do is try a power on during that 5 seconds. Which initiates a power up but it still shuts off as soon as either the white HTC screen starts or if I try recovery as soon as the Boofloader screen where it gives you boot options and shows sff that screen don't know correct name for it. Either way all I get is a quick flash of either screen when it attempts to boot then shuts off.

This is a longshot too try plugging it in and leave it for a couple hours or if somebody you know has a hero or og evo charge your batt in it for a hour or 2 then see if it is your battery or the phone. I remember reading somewhere if you completely kill those li-lon batteries it messes them up and possibly the phone too. You didn't run it completely down did you?
Edit: you may have to flip the hero or evo's battery over to make the contgacts match up,not to worry it'll work cuz I'm running my heroi 1700mha battery in my shift now.

Themikmik.com has a thread on battery calibration, one of the options is to pull the battery during bootup. This clears the battery stats folder.
Ought to see if your local sprint store has a battery you can test b4 you buy, may be that simple. I would avoid the full service stores, maybe a mall kiosk?

+1 You might want to try a different Battery. These batteries do not like being run all the way down to nothing. Had an issue once where I thought it was a rogue app running the battery down really quick. It wasn't, I had let the battery drain down to nothing one to many times. Fresh battery cured the issue. Actually got it from Sprint for free. Walked in said my battery was no good and they gave me a new one, no questions .

Issue resolved after 3 hrs at retail seems battery boost is all it. Needed so far although CSR tried to blame it on water damage. Saying litmus near USB port was pink which they refuses to show me when I asked to see It knowing that it's never been near moisture other then the humidity in the air. Let's hope this does it.

Water damage is their fallback answer everytime.. I've dealt with the same thing from Sprint. It's a bunch of bs.

Glad you got it sorted out. That BS about water damage is just that, BS. Been told that a bunch of times. Actually showed them it was BS. They opened one of thier own unused phones, and the damm indicator was red. Never been opened and red. Oh yea, sure it's a good indicator

Also, according to HTC, we should be completely killing the battery once a month as maintenence. Has this proven detrimental to the life of the cell?

No proplem, help when I can. No idea what a battery boost is . But as for killing the battery once a month. Well that's a whole different can of worms . There are different schools of thought on that. Some say it's really bad, because it kills the cells. Others say it's necessary to kill it in order to retrain it. Just Google it, but be prepared to read through a lot of info. Personaly ( IMO not that it means a damm thing ) I don't believe in the whole drain it dead phiosophy. But that's just my opinion

I used to manage batteries plus... Lithium ion batteries are the best because there arent memory gimmicks... It is not a bad thing to drain it down to 1 - 2 percent. I personally dont drain down all the way because I had an odd experience with my phone not being able to turn on (no recovery, nothing!) for about 2 hours... I thought it bricked somehow, so I let it alone for an hour on the charger and it magically (thankfully) turned on when I tried... It freaked me out so I never let my phone's battery die...
It is always a good idea to cycle the battery but the most imporatant thing to do with any cell phone battery is to charge it uninterrupted for 24 hours before using it...
