[Q] advance restore data - Epic 4G General

I flashed the urban regeneration rom and then did an advanced restore. when i booted it gets stuck at the starting animation, but behind it i can still use the phone, i know this since i can power it down by guessing where to touch on my screen. would it be doing this since i saved my data while using touchwiz, then tried to restore it on a rom that doesnt have touchwiz?
thanks

You might have just had a bad flash/restore. Id try reflashing the rom then doing a restore again to see if it still has the same problem.

Can you hit the home button and select a different launcher? If that doesn't work then a reflash is worth a try. We were unsuccessful on Bonsai to restore from nand in any way going to EH17 trials. Data had to be restoed with Titanium.

Nandorid process for the epic?

So I'm new to this phone and I'm unsure about its backup process and its restore process. I come from the moto cliq phone and that phone had a different custom recovery that in my opinion was better.
With this clockwork recovery unless I'm doing something wrong I get force closes left and right when I do a rom restore. So what happens is I completely restore the rom and as soon as the phone loads into it everything will give me force close warnings which in return never let's me fully load in, making the restore crap! Because I have to start fresh.
So could anyone here tell me the proper process of backing up my rom/ restoring, using this clockwork recovery? Or is this a known bug? Rom I was using was EE 1.2.9.
Thank you for any sorta help.

I can't tell right off, because EE is updated now, but is EE 1.2.9 a froyo ROM? Some apps will FC because they are NOT for froyo. If you did the backup from eclair and then flashed to a Froyo rom you may see those FCs.
You might try booting into clockwork, wiping the cache and user data and system, then doing an advanced restore and restoring just the data. But again, apps that are not supposed to run on froyo will fc.
Also, it sounds like you can re-load everything fresh with too much hassle - you've had lots of practice by now - why not try flashing a new EE ROM like 2.0.0.01. Follow the instructions and FLASH the DK17 modem. Then you can reload your apps from the market and do an updated nandroid/clockwork backup.
EE 1.2.9 is the rom before the froyo beta drop that he did. When I do backups everything goes smoothly, but when I restore and I just hit restore a rom it seems to restore fine, but the min I pass the load up screen all I get is force close for everything.
I don't know if I'm doing my back ups or restores wrong or if maybe it could be the rom? But somehow I doubt its the rom. I'm trying to figure out if there's a procress to backup or restore that I'm doing wrong?
All I hit is back up when doing my nandroid and to restore I just hit restore, I didn't do advance restore. Any tips?
Thanks for the reply.

Are you using a theme? Any time I have tried to restore a theme it has caused endless force closes.

So at some point your phone is runnign with NO fc's? And then you back up and restore to test the backup, and suddenly you have FCs? You should not get FC's from restoring a nandroid backup that you had just made from a flawless ROM.
It's possible that one of your resident programs is conflicting with the others - if you go into settings, applications, running services, do you see anything there that perhaps should not be there?

You're exactly correct. A perfect example is right now I'm running EE 1.2.9 with no force closing problems with all my apps installed and everything is running smoothly, I made a back up and then wiped my phone completely of everything.
Then went ahead and tried hitting restore, everything seemed to have restored because I got no errors in recovery but the min the phone loaded into home screen I get errors like "launcher pro force close, beautiful widgets force close." And so on.. I've clicked over 100 times force close and everything seems to give to me force close errors renderng my phone useless, after the system restore.
So I had to start fresh again and just reinstalled everything and everything is working fine. Weird huh? I don't know what I could be doing wrong.
Thanks for the help.

You need to do an advanced restore and only restore data. Basically you flashing a 2.1 rom over a 2.2 rom this will break things. Since you are going from 2.1 to 2.2 your best bet is to reinstall all your apps from scratch or use titanium backup to restore your apps. You are bringing in data from 2.1 to 2.2 that shouldn't be there that is why your getting fc's.

I'm not updating to 2.2 yet. This all is happening on 2.1 using EE 1.2.9 (eclair.) Which doesn't make sense to me at all. Unless something is wrong with clockwork recovery?

[Q] 2.1 upgrade to 2.2 advance restore data

if i upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 can i do advance restore data, so i can have all of my apps and homescreans like before?
thanks
Any help...I want to upgrade tonight. Thanks

You can try it but I recommend a fresh install instead of restoring. You might run into some problems and force closes. It varies for some people. You can always update to 2.2 doba NAND backup and then try your restore of data and if you have problems just use your restore you made and manually install them again. I personally only restore when I'm on the same android version. Good luck
This is stupid...but is there any way to get my saved data for my games back if I fresh install them...in particular the Sims 3.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I honestly don't know I've never played games on my phone. Do you have to login on sims to play it? I'd assume if you did it would probably still be saved.

I have this problem with the game "ninjas live" i loose all of my save data unless i flash backup restore, I need a way to get my same data back on a new rom. titainium and any other backup app does not restore the data on ninjas live like a clockwork restore. But the downside is force closes from the clockwork restore.
Titanium backup.
Ive also done the advance restore through cwm for data after odin flash many times and no problems.
worse case odin back and restore then use titanium b/u.
It does not require a login...but i guess ill update to 2.2 do an advanced restore data and if it messes up ill do titanium backup and if all fails start all my games over
This has been my biggest beef with all the ROM updates/changes as well. There is not an easy way to backup your personal data and restore it without massive force closes here and there...oy vey. Lots of experience with that on my G1
Is there any dev's working on handling this issue right now? Would hate to do it myself....
updated to the quantum rom 2.7 with ext4...did an advanced data restore, and everything is fine so far...no force closes yet...
If you're as lucky as me and a few others. Try just runing the 2.2.1 update.zip. It will keep all your games saves, apps and homepages as they are. But the risk you run is that it might run buggy. I guess its a 50 50 shot.
You might luck out, like me.

ROM Manager question

Ok so I DLed ROM Manager to my epic and hit "back up ROM". I now have a backup with todays date under the Clockwork mod folder on my SD.
1. Am I all backed up? If wiped phone and re flashed I could get my angry bird levels back?
2. If I switch to a different ROM, can I still use this backup?
3. If I do restore, how do I do it? Thru CWM?

In my experience with Rom Manager, it doesn't work with the epic.
Backup your apps with Titanium backup.
I suggest doing both rom manager and titanium backup
Just in case.
If you go to a differemt rom you could restore all apps in clockwork by going into advanced restore under cwm and choosing to restore only /data however with some roms that's not recommended and could cause issues. If you restore the whole backup through cwm then it would overwrite whatever rom you have loaded.
With titanium backup you can backup just individual applications and restore their data or data and the app itself so as someone else said above that's your best bet.

Backing up with rom manager is literally backing up with clockwork mod. ROM manager just reboots the phone into cwm and makes the backup there. Clockwork mod backups have always worked for me.
When I tried to use ROM Manager it wouldn't work properly. Someone a while ago complained that booting into cwm with the app causes errors. I wouldn't rely on the app at all if I were you.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Manually boot into cwm and backup, the app doesnt work properly. I tried backing up a rom and it said it was backed up after 10 seconds. The rom file was 3 mbs...the backup should be near 100, if not more.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Gotta add my cold water here. ROM manager has been less than useless for me, screwing up things every time I've tried it.
Stick to backing up the entire system from CWM, and a full backup via Titanium to have access to individual apps as needed. This has always worked for me, and many others here.

So if I ODIN my phone with a new modem and flash a completely different rom, I can still restore with a backup made with a different ROM? Thanks.

Technically, yes, but it is not recommended. Restoring data when moving between roms is usually when errors start happening. Also Rom manager does not work with the epic so there is probably no data in the file it created. You would have to boot into clockwork mod and backup from there.or use titanium backup and then restore just the apps when you switch roms.

Just my 2 cents...everyone here keeps saying to use Titanium, give Mybackup Root a try. Its free and has a good UI. Titanium seems to make it more complicated than it needs to be.
Other than that, the other posts here are correct, it doesnt matter what ROM you are running when you make or restore a backup, apps and their data will transfer and restore just fine, BUT like stated by others, system data does not always play well between ROMs and in my opinion you are better off not trying to restore that when you switch between ROMs...has given me more than one headache.
+1 on MyBackup Root. I find it to be more user friendly and just as effective as Titanium as well. I make a backup of everything (apks, data, photos, system settings, etc) at 4am everyday while I'm asleep. I plan on sticking with ACS so this is just a security net since they still do not use journaling. However if I want to try a different rom I can always choose to restore only the apks from the backup file.
The epic has not gotten rom manager support yet so it doesn't work and cwm can fail if you are switching between cm7 and acs cwm will give you a md5 mismatch so I had to re flash acs then restore data. So use titanium to restore apps.

viperrom losing apps

hi im new to the forum and have a quick question. i just flashed viperrom 5.0 yesterday and everything worked great and really like the rom. only problem is when i shut down the phone and restart it i loose all apps including the market. ive tried reflashing it again and its doing the same thing. this is the only issue im experiencing so far. thanks!
Are you pulling the battery to shut the phone down? i think Journaling is turned off which can cause data loss.
no just turned it off no battery pull. i also noticed that when i restarted the phone usb debugging came back on. is this normal? how would i solve the journaling issue? i just flashed back to eb13 for now and its working alright. sorry im fairly new to flashing roms so bare with me

Not not normal. I would re download all files and flash again, with starting with Fresh EC05 with ODIN.
i cant use odin cause im on linux so i have to flash through cwm everytime. but i did switch to ec05 today. i did notice that when i flashed viperrom one last time i restarted the phone before sync'ing with gmail and it kept the market upon restart. but when i synced gmail and restart i lost the apps including the market again. thats when i got real confused so i went to ec05.
in case it's caused by journaling being turned off, here's what I would suggest:
1) get the ROM installed (like you did previously)
2) get your apps downloaded and installed (as you did previously)
3) DON'T restart the phone yet....
4) after getting all your settings/apps setup
5) boot into clockwork mod and do a complete backup.
6) after making a backup, boot the phone. .if it's missing stuff.. don't worry..
7) boot back into clockwork mod and do a restore. Restore system/data, etc..
by doing a nandroid restore (step 7) you will enable journaling.. now when your phone boots back up, you'll have all your settings in place.. and you shouldn't lose them after a re-start (check it and see)
Hope this helps (if it does, hit thanks )
Journaling is on in the viper rom, but making a backup in cwm after you get it set up is a good idea. Also using an app backup, such as titanium, will let you restore your apps while on if you notice them missing.

i wasn't sure about Viper.. I use ACS and journaling is off by default but I like the piece of mind from journaling so I got all set up, did a backup, then restore LOL..
tomato tomatoe
Step 7 above is not a good way to turn on journaling. I've seen instances where some partitions have it and some don't. Best just to get a rom that has journaling on in the first place. Please also keep in mind that with journaling on it really slows down your system. You might not notice it now, but if you have been used to running ext4 for a while it will seem like molasses some how got in your phone.

not to start a debate, but all the posts/advice that I've seen in the fora here have suggested that doing a restore will enable journaling..
I am currently running a nandroid restore and have been running the same for the last 2 weeks and I have no molasses Although, running ACS, maybe my phone is too "frozen" for the molasses to run out hahaha
YMMV..

[Q] "com.google.process.gapps message wont dissapear

Hi everyone! I recently decided to install the 4.4.2 rom on my Galaxy Note 3 N9005 and I didn't like it because it obviously was buggy as ,entioned in the thread. So I wanted to go back to my nandroid backup which I had made before installing the rom. It all went right in CWM and no errors, so I rebooted my phone and got stuck at the glowing samsung logo, so after many fixes and things I tried which didn't work I flashed a pre-rooted stock rom for it and it all went well. I managed to restore to my nandroid finally and then I unlock my phone to find a "com.google.process.gapps has been stopped" message which wont go away when I tap "OK". It just comes back and gives me one second untill it comes back again. I really need help since I need my phone for work, I have tried reinstalling all the gapps, wont work, I have tried reflashing the stock rom and restoring my nandroid again, I have tried deactivating "Downloads" in the app manager but that wont fix it either and finally I have tried clearing the "app data" for all my apps but again, no luck. If anyone would be able to help me I would appriciate it very much. Thanks in advance!
You're probably gonna have to go back to complete stock. Grab your stock image and flash via odin, boot it up and see if it gives you the error without installing custom recovery and your backup. That way you'll know where the error lays.

Forgot to mention but when I return to complete stock there isn't such a message, only when I restore to my nandroid. I also tried restoring from an older backup which I had made like 2 months ago and the same problem remains, "com.google" message is still there. Any suggestions or should I just start over?

Sounds like a dodgy backup or it somehow got corrupted, I'd start over to save any headaches for future reference -- It's a headache I know, but safer I think. You could hang five, see if anyone else chimes in with any other ideas though

A nandroid backup is simple but monolithic. Most people also use Titanium Backup for the ability to restore selective stuff, or to restore to a completely different model of phone.
I had same issue
Bith titanium and nandroid restore.
Well only way to save your self. Completing wizard of first startup with feeling google..
And just restore user apps and data with titanium except google stuff..
This is the only healthy restore method so far i know that gapss.com keeps kool

So I somehow managed to go to settings and disable Play Services with the one second time line that I had before the message appears again, and the message stopped. So it must be something with Play Services. Since i'm new to android (and the Note 3 is my first android phone) I want to ask if there is a way to maybe reinstall Plaay Services?

Hi, there! I just got almost the same issue like you. Once update to custom 4.4.2, any nandroid backups which worked right before getting GAPPS' FC constantly. :crying: Try double wipes, flash 4.3 gapps full package, stop&restart android download, uninstall google play store update, etc. nothing can fix it. Only way stop the popup error, is flash stock rom. But, consequently, lose root access, even with the same method that rooted the stock rom before. I'll heard some guy said the 4.4.2 has different partition from 4.3 or older android rom. But don't mention how to restore the old partition way. So, hope anyone can help us out, thanks a lot.
