hi
i have bean having major trouble rooting my acer tf HTJ85B.US_epad-8.6.5.9-20110816 i have tried the live cd and many other ways. how can i root it? Thanks all
Is it possible that you have a b70 or a b80? Sometime in the production of the b70s they changed to a different boot loader, and atm you are not able to root. For example, my first b70 was able to root just fine, but the replacement b70 I got wont root.
check the serial...if it starts with B70 then there is a chance its not rootable yet. If it starts with B80 then its not rootable yet
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232612
Try this tool
i just got mine like a week ago and found out that its the latest revision mainly B80 hahaha..... soo if its brand new and it just reached the shop.....
Throw it in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time. At some point something will stop working.
When it does, RMA it back to Asus and they'll just exchange it for another.
Pray you get a different model.
....but yeah, I'm with a B70 and have no way to root. Really hoping this changes soon. I'm thinking about contacting Asus about it. They have no reason to lock this tablet down.

When I first got my A500 it took about a week before I got the 3.1 update..the weird part is I bought one for my brother at the same time and his got the update before mine did, even though I had been running mine for a few days before I gave his tablet to him.
I read that some devices were having trouble getting the OTA update, and had to manually push 3.1. Same might be true for 3.2.
KEEP IN MIND...
If you OTA to 3.2 you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT/FLASH CUSTOM ROMS!!!!!!
This is a known problem and has been so since 3.2 came out on the A500. Even if you root with 3.1 you will loose it with the 3.2 update. If you think/know you will eventually want to flash roms/want root access, just do it know. There are plent of roms running 3.2, and no real reason to run stock. You can always downgrade/flash stock if needed. Again, do not OTA to 3.2 if you want root access!
dam, well i just updated to 3.2 this morning using the the put it on an SD card and hold the power and volume method
I like the subtle changes but I'll probably make my way onto a custom rom when I get bored next
Does the method mentioned above work to go backwards?
And how come ppl are reporting running 3.2.1 but mine won't update to it?

See this thread when you're ready to go custom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
3.2.1 comes from custom roms, it hasn't been released for the Iconia yet. Pretty sure the roms are based on the Asus Transformer updates. I'm using thor2002's rom, very good one (tegraowners.com)
Good luck

3.2.1 was released a couple of weeks ago in Australia. I had it on my tab but went custom and am now searching for a way back cheers.
I'm another owner of the K1. I've had it for a while now since xmas and I do like it, but I cant get over the locked bootloader. I was hoping to be able to overclock it so apps for school would run nice and smooth but it doesnt seem to be happening.
Do you guys think I should hold onto it and wait for a root with recovery and hopefully some mods? Or just sell it and try to get a tegra 3?
I'm torn between this man because I have a beefy laptop so I dont need a quad core tablet, I just want it to be smooth. Kernels, overclocking and custom roms always did it for me in prior phones, now its like we're forced to upgrade every year
shoot me some advice

It has already been rooted. Once rooted you can OC all you want.
Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to make sure because the K1 doesnt even have its own category in xda.
So, this wont need a kernel to oc?

I do not OC, but have read links saying there are OC tools and all you need is root. So, you'll have to Google it knowing that you can get root and see if that's correct.

timmyDean,
Thanks. Im just hoping to not run into any problems with overclocking it. Ive rooted a lot of phones and overclocked them all.. even overclocked my pc. Since I started I cant stop lol. Its compulsive, i know, but there is a difference in responsiveness so it's not all my my head lol
I'm on A301_13_13_111209_US
Kernel 2.6.36.3
Do you know which method I should run?
Sort of confused in your development thread about using different blobs and updating with OTA.
Yup, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21309379&postcount=50
This will flash you directly to 13_13US rooted!
You're the man! I'll be attempting this tonight. Hopefully all goes well.
One question tho, if someone manages to port over cwm, will there be custom roms and so on for this tablet? I saw someone working on porting cwm, but doesnt look too promising.

CWM is already ported. I haven't tried it, but according to the developer it works. I have no reason to use it because there's nothing I want to load. I suspect it's just being used to make backups because I haven't seen any chatter on custom ROMS. As far as custom ROM development, who knows. In my opinion these Lenovo are 'junk'. Again, my opinion. Lenovo doesn't want you to modify their devices, so they make it hard to root. They want you to go to them for a custom ROM. We've tried that and it's a joke. We develop drivers and special drivers for hardware and develop several applications for vertical markets. Chances are, if you have a HC tablet you've got a driver buried in there that we wrote (our NDA keeps me from saying who, but I would say every make listed in these forums --if I were to guess). Our vertical applications cannot be sold as a solution to a fortune 500 company with us demanding they buy a custom Lenovo hardware. That has only worked with Government sales because the Lenovo suits convinced them that they are super secure.
Anyway, good luck

Thats some good info man. Now I'm thinking of rooting and throwing it up for sale as rooted and buying a transformer prime

Also, might I add they seem to want to restrict you and feed you a bunch of their 'bloatware'. A few months back, when they were in talking with our management team they said they were offering a complete solution hardware and software. They want to make money on their Marketplace applications, etc etc. I sort of got the impression they thought that was where the real money was and not in just selling tablets.

Now that makes sense. Theyll never release an unlocked boot
This sucks man..

One question before I go all the way with it, whats the procedure for updating with new releases? Best to wait for your releases?

New releases, go for it:
This is what I do:
1. Backup my apps because if the OTA knocks out root(#), you have to flash it.
2. I install the backdoor
3. I backup the su
4. I lock the su and backup su so updates HOPEFULLY don't break root(#)
5. Then I take the OTA.
6. After OTA, I reconnect and see if root(#) is still working. If not, I try the backup root(#). If they are both gone, then I hope the backdoor still works. If not then I flash back to where I was. I then ***** at Lenovo and look for a way to hack it.
Anyway, the backdoor and locking of su are in a script file you can run as long as you have adb working. 99% of the time su stays (because you lock it) or the backdoor works. Also, before taking the OTA you can usually download and see what they are changing. If it breaks root and the back door then what I usually do is pull it apart and build a custom system.img. Inside the OTA zip will be the boot.img. You can actually take it and 'cook' it in your kitchen adding root. Then you take the system.img from a prior release, mount it, and replace all the files with the ones inside your OTA. Make sure you account for blob changes if they are in the OTA. If there's a blob, then put it in the blob tool folder, extract it, and add it to the flash and replace bootloader.bin. Swear some more at Lenovo, and flash in your custom ROM. Now ad su and busybox, and superuser.apk. Use the dump tools in dump folder to build a new system.img. Replace your cooked boot.img with the original OTA boot.img and you're done.
TD.
Then ***** at Lenovo some more lol.
Thanks for the tips, Ill try the script if there is a reasonable update for it ie ICS.
For now the root worked.. flawlessly. Thanks for your work man.
I see lots of instructions for "re-rooting" an updated a550, and other options, but I bought my a550 new a month or so ago, did not root, got the ICS update this weekend and would now like to root it so that I can use a few apps that require root (like the cisco anyconnect client).
I hate to look like a complete Noob, but with so much information floating around out there, much of it for folks who rooted first while on HC, I'm having a hard time finding the information I need. Would anyone else who might found this information be willing to share? Hopefully accepting ICS on a device that was never rooted before does not preclude rooting this thing. I really like the tablet but would like it even more if I could connect to the VPN at work, and that requires root.
Hey there.
If im not mistaken, Sounds like you did the same as me and did not root your tablet on HC and went ahead and installed the official ICS from acer.
I also did this then went ahead and rooted it by this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546593
Worked for me even though others in that thread were having trouble last time i checked mine worked first time.
Good Luck
Hello folks I just bought the 32gb TF300T at Best Buy tonight. Got the price match via the "Office Max" ad for $349.99 plus tax...
Anyhow some questions.
I have rooted, rom'd, themed, ect... the heck out of my DroidX and am generally very comfortable mucking around in that territory but I'm reading various threads here and about concerning the permanent bricking of the TF300 if a person does something wrong. I'm used to being able to SBF & restore the DroidX if something goes amiss and bring the 'brick' alive again. That being said, I'm a bit squeemish at the moment to do any modifications with the TF300 but of course will be itching to nontheless... Mainly would like to definitely Root-Unlock(?)-Flash Roms. Any suggestions or particular threads to point me to concerning this? I've done a little looking around but there seems to be multiple methods discussed for even rooting and I'm a little uncertain on where to begin realizing this is likely a bit different than the DroidX.
Any recommendations as to "Must Have" apps and/or do most apps that work on the DroidX for example, still work on this tablet?
My uses will be for both work and play. A lot of web surfing, email, and media.
Any and all tips are appreciated! Thanks
Once you unlock the bootloader you should be good to go. Just make sure you follow directions and read up before you do anything new. Also just so you know once you unlock you cannot go back to locked and you will not get updates from asus. Currently I'm just going with it locked and rooted and I'm happy. Ics is so good already plus there aren't too many rooms out yet. Give it time though and once they start to roll out and I get sick of stock ill start flashing. I'm also holding out so that if anything goes wrong my warranty is still valid and I can get it replaced.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda premium
Howdy!
First off, nice buy, I do so enjoy my TF300T, and I'm sure you will as well.
As you prolly know from the cheaper price, Asus also used cheaper parts to build their tablets. Make sure the screen is free of defects, so you can return it for a new one if something goes wrong. It's a beautiful tablet as long as your luck is up and you don't brick it by mistake. My advice: wait a week or two. If you're happy, go ahead and visit this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1669827) for a cyanogenmod 9 port. The Nightlies are stable, I'm using it right now, but there are still issues with GPS and Sound, which will be fixed with time and patience.
You can root (if you haven't updated past .17 and don't want to install CM9 yet) easy by using sparkyroot at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526487 ))) But if you have, do some research, and you'll find what you"re looking for.
If you do, here's something to help you along: http://www.android.gs/update-asus-t...anogenmod-9-android-4-0-4-ice-cream-sandwich/
There's more, but you have to search for it! Google is your friend.

If I've helped you, please don't forget to thank me!

I second this completely. I'm on my third tablet. The first one had a dead pixel, and the second had a hardware defect where the touchscreen went crazy if I applied any amount of pressure to the left edge of the tablet. The second one took me a few days to figure out what exactly was happening.
Thanks for the replies! I did actually take that update from Asus last night after powering it up.
My Kernel version is 2.6.39.4
Wonder if I can even root now at this moment?
Thinking of holding out for now regarding unlocking as I would sooner keep it within warranty at this time plus it doesn't seem like there are any real perks in unlocking currently if the Roms & Kernels out now are still young in development.
I would like to root though if I haven't screwed up by already taking the update so I can run TB, ect...
Thanks again guys. I'm sure there will be many questions to come!
Yer very welcome.
I do recommend the updated build.prop, it's low-profile, but helps with things such as battery life and other optimization. You need root, however.

Thanks! I did get my root very easily per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689193
The thing is I tried to get the CWR via:
3. If you have root and need CWM recovery.
Why? Nandroid backups and restores. Debrick. Flexibility. Numerous other reasons. ( but no OTA)
- Step 1. Run the tool "1-Click Transformer Root.bat"
- Step 2. You'll be presented with a menu. Choose option (3)
- You'll have CWM Recovery

And was unable to as option #3 is simply "Quit" :silly:
I'm wondering if one needs to be "Unlocked" to obtain CWM recovery?
Anyhoo, yea, could you point me to this updated "build.prop" discussion and method for obtaining? Anything in particular to be cautious of when doing it?
Thanks!

You need to be unlocked for CWM. In relation to the modified build.prop AFAIK there isn't one made for the lastest firmware (.30), but here's the main thread for it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641219

It seems there are actually two for the latest firmware or am I reading something wrong?
Edit: Disregard the above. I just realized those are for the WW version and not US. If I'm understanding correctly... Whew, so much to be careful about.
So i have a 7inch HDX upgraded to the newest firmware....due to an issue i have a replacement from amazon with 13.3.2.1...can i do anything (ie: root, custom rom) with this or am i out of luck?
Thanks!
I'm assuming you're talking about 4.5.2.
You can only install Google apps for now.
Yes....you can root, install custom ROMs, and even unlock the bootloader on that version. Just do not let it update!

Oops, I must've read that wrong. I thought he said he used to have a device with 13.3.2.1.
i'm rooted and installed the Xposed framework stuff (and the module)...trying to figure out gapps and all that stuff while, instead of using a custom ROM, maybe staying with the kindle fire look/services for now...
Edit: playstore installed and working....but i seem to have no audio....cannot confirm if I had it before....any ideas (other than factory reset and checking audio)?
I just screwed my kindle
i was on 3.2.8 after a downgrade from 4.5.2.
I was greedy wanting more was running hdx Nexuse 1.01 safestrap editon.
now im hard bricked after flashing 3.2.3 bootloader upgrade in safestrap.
phoned amazon, they did troubleshooting nothing happened screen not awaken.
they will phone me back at 8.10pm to tell me if i get a replacement or not. if they do its a win lose situation.
i will possibly lose my downgrade and stuff and if they dont send me a new one, my tablet and tainted pride will be lost forever.

Sorry for your loss. Amazon will likely offer some type of remediation whether that be a refurbished unit or reduced price on a new HDX. When it arrives you can assess your options depending on what FW is installed. You already played the downgrade game so familiar territory. Fast forward a few weeks and you should be in good shape; maybe a few more grey hairs ...
Newbies take note - read before you flash! HDX bricks easy.

You took a file, which should be flashed with TWRP and not with safestrap.
TWRP does not work with 3.2.8
Yep, the 3.2.3 bootloader upgrade is done if you're on 3.2.4-3.2.6 (at least most easily) by first rolling back to 3.1.0 and then upgrading to 3.2.3., going straight from 3.2.8 the way you did was a guaranteed brick. Sorry man that's tough, the HDX is a really tricky device, don't let it get you down!
