Hi all,
This is my first post here, so please bear with me. I'm running CM7 stable and tiamat 4.0.1 currently.
I'm have two main problems:
1) Gmail sync. I've tried most of the tips I've seen on this forum and others about clearing the cache, resyncing my Google account and re-installing the app. They all amount to temporary solutions as my phone just doesn't seem to sync with my Gmail account. From what I remember, wasn't there some sort of setting in either "Accounts & Sync" or the actual Gmail app itself that lets the user determine sync frequency?
2) WhatsApp push notifications. I received a message at 12:22AM and did not get a push notification until 7:22AM. I've poked around in the settings as best I could and don't see anything about sync or even push notifications beyond the basic pop-up and style settings.
Aside from Spotify, these apps are the two I use most on my phone. I've searched tirelessly for the past 2 days for a solution to this problem to no avail. Any and all help/recommendations/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No, Gmail syncs with push automatically, there is no setting to change this.
As for your problem, it could be one of two things. One, could be a bad signal or 3g outages in your area. How is your signal all day at home/work? Does this same problem happen on wifi? The second possible problem is it's just a problem with your rom/kernal. You could try flashing back to a stock from for a few days and see if it clears up the problem.
My signal has been consistent since rooting.
I haven't tested it out while on WiFi; I'll give it a look when I get to my home network, but if that's the case, is it indicative of a problem I could address that would make my Gmail sync over 3G?
And seeing as how I'm still very new to all of this, is there a specific Stock ROM/Kernel combination that you would recommend in terms of stability/reliability? I tend to get really lost and confused with all the posted ROMs.

My Gmail sync is busted. I am not getting incoming emails nor sending outgoing mails. When i scroll down my old emails, at the point where it starts to load more older ones, I instead get a message "No connection" and "retry" button. Retry is unsuccessful.
When i go into the data and synchronization setting and manually try to sync the gmail, I get a 1-frame-flash on the bottom which flashes me a message saying "Sync is not currently experiencing problems. Please try again later".
I then add a secondary gmail account and it syncs perfectly!! But my primary one doesn't work! I can't remove my primary account and re-add it unless I do a factory reset...which I don't want to do.
I've tried a reboot and it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas?
I've got the same problem today. It seems that it's a server problem.
Server problem, even though a secondary account synced fine?
If I'm not the only one...then that makes me feel better.
I have this issue with WM
I use Google sync with WM device (My N1 should arrive tomorrow) and have had a similar (if not exact) problem. When I receive a mail from a specific sender ([email protected]) 90% of the cases it breaks the sync. I also sync that same account via IMAP on a secondary account in my WM device - just in case.. syncing every 30 minutes.. (that sync works fine) so I can use the IMAP account to delete the problematic mail.. and then, once deleted (or archived if I use the web interface) the problem is gone.
Try to find if there was a mail message you got that caused the problem. it is probably either the last synced mail or the one just after that...
Update:
The sync fixed itself this morning. It started syncing nonstop for a good hour (I'm on ATT Edge too) and I wasn't sure what it was doing, but the end result is I can now get my emails and notifications again.
On a separate note, I also noticed that now in my Gmail app, I can access every email dating back to 9/11/09. That's hundreds of emails. And If I scroll all the way to the bottom, there's no more loading earlier conversations, so 9/11/09 is the farthest back I can access my email without searching.
Does anyone know that there is such a limit to looking into past emails? Also, Anyone know why it doesn't just expose a 15-20 emails at a time like previously? Is it because once the email is exposed, it's cached somewhere and I don't need to load it anymore? If so, I'd love to know where I can delete this cache.
Some other members have experienced a similar issue with no sync. They fixed the broken sync by doing this(and this is how you can clear that cache as well)
Setting->Apps->Manage Apps-> gmail/gmail storage->clear data and cache(if you can, on my G1 I can just clear data, no cache shows)
You will probably just want to clear the gmail storage one, but doing both probably wouldn't be that big of a deal.

On older versions of Android, we could clear the cache on all Google apps... but this isn't available through the Manage Applications screen in 2.1. Not sure why Google took out this feature.. Previously if Gmail stopped synching, we would clear the cache and it would start working again. Hopefully this doesn't become an unfixable issue with 2.1.

They took it out? That sucks! Can you do the clear data at least? And I could swear I read someone with a Nexus One had this issue, and cleared the data or cache for gmail and fixed it... maybe it was in the G1 forum, starting to get confused following both at the same time.

Aha I found it! I may be an Android noob but I can still be useful.
Within Manage Apps, click hit Menu > Filter > All. This will expose all the native apps as well and you can clear your cache till the cows come home. I just found this a minute ago and cleared out my cache for my Gmail, default browser, and Youtube. That felt sooooo good, since I'm such a storage nazi.

Rad! I hadn't even thought to hit menu and see what I could get, lol... Good find.
Thank god! I was this "-" close to questioning my sanity! Thanks a lot uansari1! You will be getting a bill for my thearapy sessions to recover from this.
I debated if this belongs in Q&A or General, I think General, but mods please move it if I'm wrong.
I'm running the latest CM6 nightly. I have been flashing almost nightly (skipped few nights here and there) and this morning I decided to completely wipe my phone first before flashing latest + gapps.
I've gotten everything set back up and am noticing some different behavior with the stock E-Mail app. I have an Exchange Activesync connection for my work e-mail. I have server side rules set up on our exchange server that move specific e-mails to specific folders (completely outside of the inbox, but within my mailbox, obviously). Up until this morning, if mail came into one of these other folders, my phone did not notify me (this is partially why I have them set up this way, that and for organization purposes). After wiping and resetting things up, however, if a message comes in (never even hits my inbox) I get an alert for a new message. If I goto my email it's (obviously) not in my inbox, I can of course goto menu/folders and find the e-mail that triggered the alert in the appropriate sub folder.
I don't believe I'm overlooking any options to disable this, and am kind of curious why it suddenly decided to start behaving this way. I know some people have complained in the past that the email app doesn't work this way, myself however, preferred it the "broken" way.
FWIW, I already own Touchdown. I preferred it to the stock email app for the longest time, but once the stock app got the few options I was forced to use touchdown for, I switched back to stock. I know I could fix this issue by just using touchdown, but I'd rather just keep using the stock app if I can.
Anyone else seen this or have any suggestions?
Edit: nm, found the git commit responsible for this new behavior. Perhaps we will get an option to disable/configure this before cm6 is final.

I didn't. It's a new "feature" you could push email.apk from an earlier Rom (rc2 should do it) or wait and hope it becomes a customizable option. I'll proly end up pushing an older apk myself tomorrow.
I have not made any changes to the settings but all of a sudden my phone is not consistently syncing with my gmail account. It only syncs every once in a while and it does not sync all the unread emails.
I have tried a reboot by taking the battery out.
Can anyone think of anything else I can do? Thanks in advance for the help.
Have you checked your Account Sync settings (Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync) yet? Any errors? Sometimes you'll see a red splat letting you know an account can't currently sync. Usually, this is just a temporary issue.
I'll wait to speculate anything else until you can post more info about what you're seeing in your Accounts & Sync settings.
No errors. No ideas.

Man, we're going to need some more info. Did it ever work? What does "once in a while" mean? There's no such thing as random...
It's worked for the last 4 weeks perfectly. My phone was getting gmail faster then the gmail app on my laptop.
Yesterday I received 25 gmails but it only synced one of them. Hmm, I wonder if it could be the new gmail "priority" email thing since the one email that did sync was a friend and the others may have been ads. But I don't see a setting for that.

Yeah, I'd look into that whole Priority Inbox thing. I'm not using that at all because I just don't need it - and I run my own business and still don't need it. It sounds like something "superficial" is at play here. If you weren't syncing you'd truly just not be syncing - or would have errors in the Accounts & Sync area.
As far as I can tell, the whole Priority Inbox thing is managed server-side - i.e. I don't see an option for it within the Android app. Considering no one else is having a similar issue (and those who are using Priority Inbox know what to expect, so they aren't seeing an "issue" on their phone), I would suspect a setting/configuration/option as the problem; and not an actual problem with syncing.
Keep us all posted though! What users expect from software and what software actually does, are two different things...
Thanks for the help. I don't think I did anything to resolve the problem. It just started working again. Maybe it was a gmail thing.
Thanks again.

I've noticed similar behavior once in a while.. i found that unchecking and rechecking the mail sync checkbox in sync settings will temporarily resolve it.. and it doesn't happen very often.
I've always thought it maybe had to do with me toggling the gsm only/wcdma gsm auto settings as I go to and from my house and/or the combination of manually turning mobile data on and off (all battery management exercises) so I just leave mobile data on now (still have always on data off.. this was going to be my next thing I tried if it kept up) and it seems to happen less often but still once in a blue moon it'll hang..
I also use priority inbox but haven't had any other evidence that led me to believe that this was the culprit.

Hello. First off let me say I have searched this forum for a thread relating to this issue and was unsuccessful so if by some means I overlooked it, I apologize for a replicate.
Anyway, I just purchased my KF yesterday and love it. However, I noticed today after turning it back on that my previous settings for email were no longer sticking. For example, I had set my email to fetch PUSH but it went back to manual. I don't know if this has something to do with the wifi or what but I'm curious so I can keep it from resetting.
*EDIT* For clarification the email account I am speaking of is my Gmail which is an IMAP server type.
Thanks for any help on this issue.
-- I plan on rooting the KF if it means I can keep my wifi from shutting down once the Fire goes into sleep.
** It seems to of been the already installed email app that was the issue. **

Nice. Well, I have no idea what is going on. I have set my email setting to PUSH and each and every time I turn off the device and then restart it, the settings go back to manual
And I even performed a factory reset. Thanks though for your reply. I hope I can get it taken care of soon. I hate nothing more than exchanges, esp. when the device itself now is top-notch...other than this email setting debacle.

Misread your post.
I have not set mine to "push."
I have 7 pop email accounts, so probably doesn't apply to your problem.
Yeah, I'm referring to my gmail (IMAP) account.
-- On a side note, however completely related to the subject, I notice my browser bookmarks don't stick either. I will delete many of the pre-loaded ones, put a few of my own, and after reboot, notice they are no longer there as well. Reverted back to all the old bookmarks (that I deleted) and none of mine.

No help here, either.

^^ no worries. Thanks for your replies anyway
Anyone else having this 'issue'?
I'm guessing you're talking about using the stock Kindle Fire email app connecting to your Gmail account?
My advice initially would be to sideload Google's apps on there and see if you have the same issues.
Failing that, I would probably do a factory reset, and start again. It shouldn't take you very long to set everything up again.
It's a weird one for sure, but then I never used the built in apps!
If you're only using gmail, I'd recommend just installing the gmail app, then using quick sync settings from the market to make it sync automatically, if that's what you want it to do.

Thanks to you both. You were both correct. It was something to do with the email client.already on this device. After using gmail app the settings stay in place perfectly after reboots. Thanks again I apprecaite your help.
Hi everyone,
this is probably not an issue related to the OPT, but I wanted to make sure whether other users are experiencing this as well. Since a couple of weeks ago, my Gmail is no longer properly synching my emails. Sometimes they come in in time, sometimes I have to sync manually. I already found lengthy threads on this topic in the Google support forums, so this seems to be a problem that started with a recent Gmail app update, as other users are experiencing it as well.
Are any of my fellow OPT users also experiencing this? It doesn't seem to be a general synching problem, as other apps don't seem to have an issue receiving push notifications.
Cheers!

Thanks, I have tried this multiple times already. I even did a complete clean reinstall of the system. It's not related to that. Also, the bug that Gmail doesn't communicate with the server properly when deleting an email has been occuring continuously for months, and there doesn't seem to be a solution to this.
I also got the same problem - on CM13 and Oxygen. I think its an Google Bug.
Me too. Stock.

I reverted back to the stock version of the app, though I'm note sure whether in OOS 2.2.1 this version already contains the bug. We'll see.
