I am in Canada on business and just picked up a thrive, I have been drooling over the damn thing for a few weeks now. HDMI port, GPS sensor sold me. I live in the US, and wondering, are they the exact hardware, or should I swap the puppy out when I get back to the states?
Also, verision is 3.1.03.5.0003 if that matters. Also, not rooted yet as I do for all my android devices, as I have to do more homework about this sleep of death thing.

Hardware wise they are the same. OS wise they are not. You will need to root and install the 0032 OS load to have it up to date.

Thanks, I am actually checking out the root right now, might as well flash the ROM too as soon as I can find a image online.

No brainer for me really, unless something truly revolutionary comes out of MWC (and you never know, HTC hasn't announced anything Tegra based yet and I am sure they will) then this is the phone that will finally make me ditch my Hero.
Anyone else as impressed as I was (and more importantly still impressed now the dust has settled?)
EDIT: Obviously I will be plumping for the 3G GSM version as our useless networks can't even do 3G coverage properly, let alone 4G
If it is released on vodafone UK then yeah if not no all the other networks suck. I'll just stick with my galaxy s.
I really like the look of it, butI am dubiuos to how good the webtop will be. What would be interesting if, we managed to pehaps mod it to be more of a full version of linux, pehaps ubuntu with a terminal
Think im still going to wait and see what samsung has up its sleeve with the next galaxy s, but i doubt its going to be released as quickly as the atrix so i might just jump ship to moto. Im sick of the stuttering/lag on my captivate.

It looks like my next upgrade, too. I was looking at buying a Revo to stream media to my upstairs TV, but this will do the trick perfectly!
Now I just need it to be a cheap upgrade with vodafone after April and I'm sorted

yea, I'm definitely hoping the brilliant minds of the people here at xda will get ubuntu running rather than that custom webtop software.
Definitely getting one! Heres to hoping that the bootloader is unlocked. Oh please let it by unlocked!!
going to try to get from At&t without a contract on launch day.
don't want to give up my unlimited data plan
please motorola do something similar to HTC for the bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
please please please
I've got 2 upgrades saved up 2 of them on launch day for me! 1 to sell, 1 to play with

Yup, I'll definitely also be rockin' it with the laptop dock!
Unlocked bootloader = instapurchase
I'm gunna be getting one when upgrade come around and I hope they could mod webtop to ubuntu or put the ubuntu webtop feature(if achieved) in a ROM like CM7
You can put a check by my name, im getting one xD.
One question i have one of the old 5gb data plans, if i use an upgrade to get this phone will they force me to change my data plan?
I'd love to get one, but I'm on Sprint. To be honest, I think this is the best Android phone out there right now
If the price is reasonable and HTC doesn't come up with something similarly amazing in the mean time i'm certain to get one.
There's several things that give me pause about buying this phone.
1) AT&T. The probability of getting Android system updates seems low.
2) Motoblur. Hate it.
3) Locked bootloader.

I am going to wait until the Summer to pick one of these bad boys up. That should give the dev community time to get the ball rolling with this device.
since we have CWM recovery, i wonder if we can just flash the official update from 3.0.1 to 3.1?
i am afraid to test as we do not have any original sbf to restore to if something goes wrong.
i open up the update and don't see any radio related files, i guess it might be safe.
any ideas you guys?
i have rooted my xoom, is there anyway i can dump the whole thing as a backup, try the update, and if something goes wrong, restore it?
the-update-is-for-US-xoom-it-will-not-work-here-we-are-not-cdma.
I get fed up of repeating this sentence like a drone, I think I'm going to make a quick text.
bloody motorola... what so different in that?
can't they just do something similar to what the Nexus S is, where they are all compatible?
i don't see any hardware difference apart from the radio.
( i am referring to wifi xoom).

Motorola is American, America comes first, so we have to wait. Unfortunately they seem to be one of those c ompany that doesn't deal with their international customers very well and so we have no information.
I think the real difference is that the American XOOM is a G.E.D (Google Experience Device) so they get direct google updates, where ours is not, so we have to wait on Motorola.

I understand that the hardware on the UK/EU wifi version is the same as the US version, while the software is different. Is it possible to load the US software onto the UK hardware and make my device a G.E.D.? If we're going to get dicked around like we did with the Droid/Milestone, then I might just return it and buy an iPad 2 (for all their problems they do seem to get that they are selling a product to a global audience).

Hardware is the same, I'd do exactly that with the Wifi Only and just install the US images, then you get the updates like they do. We can't do that with the 3G one though because their 3G is CDMA and ours isn't so there are some differences that make it impossible for us to just use their images.

And to do this do I need to unlock the boot loader?
As far as I understand all I have to do is firstly factory wipe from the settings menu, then enable the debug USB option, plug it in to my PC and follow the commands listed here? Or is there more to it than that? I've been a happy Nexus One stock user so I've never really bothered to learn any of this stuff prior to this.
Heya there! Seems like I'm one of the unlucky ones who got a 2.2 Transformer. Is there a safe way to install one of the 3.1 roms on those? I don't just want to go ahead and update the thing with like, Primordial, because it might break it if the partitioning is different.
I would keep it as is or sell it on eBay. That is a RARE tablet!
It might be rare, but it's pretty unuseable as a tablet. That's not really helping me. And I don't think It'd sell any better than normal ones on ebay, it's after all well known what's inside the system by this point.
Apologies. My answer was not helpful to you.
I do not think that you will have an issue just taking the leaked HC 3.1 and just installing it over your 2.2 install. Be sure to do a Nandroid backup first.......and if you are able to....post it here for the devs to play with.
Can anyone else confirm that this will not harm his tablet?

yes, it is possible. not sure if it is public yet.
Wait, some of these TFs come with Froyo? Lol, seriously? I hope I misunderstood that.
Some (I think 5 are known by now) did indeed. It's an early version of Froyo that has a lot of apps for testing the different hardware of the transformer preinstalled, but is otherwise... Well, Froyo, not Honeycomb ^^
Also having problems installing it here... I figure I need to somehow replace the recovery, so I can use cwm, but I can't figure out how to do it. This Transformer also comes with a Fastboot option, so maybe there's more to it.
I can assure you that you would probably pull more money for it on ebay than you would for a regular transformer. Not to mention, several people who purchased tablets that had 2.2 on it were contacted by ASUS and we given the option to replace it and I think they got some kind of bonus for turning it in. I can certainly imagine they don't want their in house programs leaking out to other companies or the public.
Return it to the retailer or call Asus.
You're not the first that posted about getting 2.2.
It's useless, don't bother selling it on eBay, they charge 9% for things over $400+ and PayPal charges 3%, It's really not worth selling it.
I believe the current one is coming from google/motorola, but that's the wifi only model.
I have the 4G model, and afaik verizon would be releasing it, because it has their reputation/name on it
I also know this is a 'GED' device, so google supports it
so who would it be that would deliver ICS?
because if it's verizon, I don't think the 4G guys are getting it this month, but if it's google/motorola, I assume it can be within a week or so...
Chances are, it has to pass through Verizon for rigorous testing before being delivered OTA to thousands of users.

It will come from Google. Verizon will sign off on it, but it will come from Google. There seems to be a misconception around here that only the WiFi Xoom is a Google Experience Device (GED). Not true - the 3G/4G Xoom is as well. All updates have come from Google.

That's what I originally thought, as well, but, I was told only the wifi version is a GED earlier today. It was my understanding that all US versions of the Xoom were GED. If so, then maybe there's hope we'll see it sooner rather than later. After all, they have to do a soak test, right?

All US versions of the Xoom are GEDs. If they weren't, Moto would have been able to use a custom kernel to enable full SD card access, like they did with Xooms in other countries. I'm not sure where the misinformation came from that only the WiFi Xoom is a GED. That's not the case.

So it won't be long before us 4g guys get it too. Unless Verizon had to test it out before signing off on it...

No we're not. How quickly people forget that the VZW Xoom was first to receive the 3.1 update. VZW generally turns these GED updates around reasonably quickly.

I know. I'm just being highly sarcastic. Let's hope we see it in the next week or so. Of course, it'll likely get released while I'm traveling for work next week. Guess I'll throw the dev tools on my work laptop...."just in case". I really do hope we see the official update soon. Would like to compare it to the AOSP roms.
Apparently its not as easy as we thought ;-)

For the longest time I kept my Xoom stock. For a small while I put the tiamat rom on. But I eventually went back to Stock. With ICS, the advantage over stock HC is pretty immense and I wanted to make sure that what ever ROM I installed with ICS was fully functional. This is the primary reason I went with EOS. Their ROM is virtually fully functional. It also has additional functions like others have mentioned (OC, use of SD card, etc.) Anyway, this is one of those times where I really feel that the ROM developers have come through in a big way. The biggest bug I have found in one of the nightlies was the dictionary issue but that has since been resolved.
The way I look at it is this, with my 4G Xoom I either need to have the best ROM available or be fully stock, none of this in-between stuff.
just in case no one said it who cares !

I was going to try this, but I got worried that I would brick my new phone when I saw the firmware is different. Chainfire's method uses XXUAMD2 firmware. My Build Number is JDQ39.I337UCUAMDB. It is close, but not the same.

they want someone stupid to try it out instead of them and report their success or failure first lol
im sure most people dont even have this phone yet because its not out. Mine does not arrive till tommorow
I thoiught I saw a post in the Development thread that this method does not work - I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that is the case, unfortunately. I have faith that Chainfire of someone will get us rooted soon enough - (hell, I don't even have my S4 yet - won't arrive until tomorrow
But - Unless I had seen someone else had successfully rooted using any method, I do not think I would even think about being the first one to try it. lol
How long before the AT&T source code is released? We should be able to get a work around once we have that.
This will be my first Android phone that didn't have root before it was released, and I've bought nearly all of them on release date, taken it home, and rooted it before doing anything! I won't be selling my SIII right away since it looks like I'll be using it until we get a successful root out of this sucker....
Getting mine on Saturday if all goes to plans, willing to help test as well! I have 60 days to return it if it breaks, hahah

Yea i can't officially switch till root. S4 just arrived. Will see if I can get some root on here.
Just got mine an hour ago. Apparently, thanks to AT&T, the bootloader is locked, which could complicate the root method considerably
