Well, I need to be honest, I'm not high on Asus's support. Figured I'd share this with the community since it's amusing, but a bit of an eye opener as to what kind of support you will be getting if you contact Asus.
I called Asus today because there is a small wedge between the frame and the tablet (it came like this). It looks like I could probably push it in, but I'd rather not risk breaking it and REALLY be screwed.
The guy asked if it was OK if they reinstalled the software. I asked why and he said in the event this is a software issue, that they would need to re-image the device. So I asked how could a physical defect be caused by software, and he said they sometimes find that issues like this are caused by software.
I can post pictures if necessary, but I was just shocked that Asus would say something as silly as that.
Unless of course... the Transformer literally is a Transformer...
Asus tech support is not the best... I had really bad experience with my graphics card last year. So I just gave up and sold the graphics card on ebay. I hope that I won't have to go through their support on my TF.
Mike
Well contrary to these few unfortunate experiences, I sent my TF into Asus last week on Wednesday, it got to their Support Site in TX (I live in NY) on Friday the 13th. I had the SOD issue that some others are experiencing which was really just a dead backlight. I just checked my RMA status and it said "Repairing" then about an hour later I got an email notification from Asus saying my TF shipped today.
This seems fairly quick turnaround for fixing my TF. Hopefully I get it back without any issues. I'll keep you all updated.

You were probably talking to a front line "tech support" person. Universally these people have standard scripts that they must adhere to. They have to get you're OK on these things because it's on the list not because they acutally think that software could be causing a hardware defect. On the other hand it could be a real transformer and they just haven't told us yet and are waiting unil it has a chance to infect all of our other household electronics and rise up against us.

I used to work in Tech Support when it was more domestically based. I'm familiar with the scripts.
I also had to deal directly with support in India when I worked as a field tech, so I'm well aware. Some companies are better than others. I'm not sure if it's better script writing, better training, or what, but Asus's had to be some of the worst.
Just be prepared for it. I'll be sending mine in 1 week from Tuesday when I return from a business trip / small vacation. I'll let everyone know how well it goes and if my unit comes back "different".

ASUS support has been perfect for me... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1083184
I'm still fighting them trying to get them to provide a shipping label (dust behind screen). Although they ask about the software thing because some people send their unit in password protected.
But yeah, I'm waiting for a supervisor to call me back. God damn India.
I'm trying to RMA mine at the moment, for a defective PSU and case creek.
They have asked for pictures of the problem........
I sent them an e-mail almost two weeks ago about some of the problems most of us are experiencing....and I never even got a response lol.

I just registered my Transformer online and their site was embarrassing.
It really can't cost that much to have a decent English translator...
I mean, when I finished it said something like "Registration is success!"
Wow, nice.
I know Asus reads these forums. As an Android Platform developer, they seem to be doing the right thing, with 3.1 coming out.
Considering this tablet was originally going to be released with Froyo on it, then upgraded to HC, I had a feeling they'd be down with the updates (yay for 3.1 in June).
If you never have to call support, you'll think Asus was the best company ever!

ICS coming to Transformer and Slider "early december". Asus have sold 1.2m Transformers since it launched in April, and are ontrack for 1.8m for the 3/4 of a year of 2011...
Not too shabby at all. Whilst all the media have been talking about Xoom and Tab, it seems consumers were actually buying Transformers....
well. Im one of those people. Jurt bought one and im very happy with. And was looking into xoom and tab.........but transformer caught my eye
Me too
I bought 2 of them. First one was a B80 and I really wanted to root it so I bought another one that is rootable. This one has the dock, which I bought with the first one. USB ports and another MicroSD slot. Gotta love all that extra space and I love extra options. Then, updated right away so the support is there. So I switch from my IPad 2 to my Transformer but only when the transformer is recharging. With the dock, I'm not on the I Pad very much at all any more. Can't wait for the Prime!!

Interesting. The numbers I read were 3.2 million total Honeycomb tablets. So Asus has over a 1/3 of the market? That makes the 3.2 number seem low. What about Zoom and Samsung? I wondering if the other 600k were going to be Prime's or if they plan on fire sale-ing the TF1 when the prime comes out. I've been shopping for sub $300 tablets for my wife. Current candidates are Fire, 80 G9, Ideatab A1. I would love to throw a Transformer into the mix (or give her mine and get a Prime ).
Why would anyone else wanna get the other tablets? Sounds like their companies don't give a crap about their customers.. hmm.

Apple spends about a quarter of a billion each year on advertisement and public relations. If a company like asus wants to catch up, they really ought to spend more on ads and PR.

I don't think ASUS has any desire to "catch up with" Apple, nor any delusions that they could. In fact, that's what's stupid about the whole thing: no company NEEDS to sell as many tablets (or any other product, really) as the iPad 2--they only need to sell however many is necessary to get a return on their investment.
ASUS is clearly happy with the number of Transformers sold, or else they wouldn't be making such a huge push with the Transformer Prime. As long as they sell enough to keep making them, I'm happy.

+1 on that.
Here in Holland I see Samsung doing a lot of ads.
Asus could sell more if the general public would be more aware of the Transformer.

Bought one Slider for me, here in Brazil, asus doesn't make advertisement at all and it was really hard to find the tablet... found more often only iPads, Galaxy tabs 10.1 and 7 and xoom. Some time ago I found Transformer but didn't find the Keyboard, only in sites like "mercado livre" (Works like ebay)...
It's annoying that they don't advertise.
I use mine often for work and when traveling, and tech illiterates ask "hey, is that an iPad?". I explain mine is ASUS and runs Android, and they always reply "never heard of it", and look at me like I'm crazy for buying it. Then they tell me they're probably going to buy an iPad 2 for $700, despite not knowing what it does, what the differences are between tablets, and completely oblivious to $400-$500 tablets that are newer, more powerful, and expandable.
Not to mention, once ICS hits and merges Android phone and tablet software, Android devices will outsell Apple by the millions and devs will focus a lot more energy on Android tablet apps.
I just bought one too
The new prime's design isn't really to my liking. The price for a transformer now doesn't hurt too, it has dropped to a reasonable level. You prolly need to give prime some time to sort out the initial issues.

A word to the wise, there are pros and cons with the "waiting" thing. Generally the new tech is jumped on right away by the geniuses that frequent here like hungry wolves. Once they crack and root a device, they move on to development. When the company patches the exploit, the intensity of finding a root solution precipitously dips and continues to do so with each iteration of hardware and software. (The companies fix the original exploit making it exponentially harder if not impossible to beat). If you are in the front door when the device hits, you will undoubtedly be able to root it, and it will stay that way for the life of the product. Just something to think about.
There are those of us who jump right in and get the latest tech and enjoy it and enjoy our lives immensely, and there are those of us who wait and wait and always do without on the chance that something better or cheaper will come out.
Those are the types that usually have nothing new and nothing to enjoy.
In my book your a long time dead so i am going to get whatever i can as soon as i can and have the pleasure of using it.
A friend of mine is earning over 40k a year yet always goes for a cheap option.

That's only the tip of the iceberg, they can only talk about their legal/moral advertising.
Both Microsoft and Apple spend many more times that on less ethical forms of marketing, like:
Employing "gamers" to stand outside stores in midnight launches to "buy" consoles and games..
Employing armies of viral marketeers to monitor forums and blogs and praise/defend their employers products.
Holding blogs and news sites to ransom for good press with their advertising budgets
Inviting blogs and news sites to lavish launch parties, all expenses paid trips to Redmond/Cupertino, Free Xboxes at E3, free Acer Ferrari Laptop with Vista..

Someone want to tell him he can already USE it..... He makes it sound like a power-on password. If anything unlocking the bootloader will REDUCE functionality, as it would almost certainly mean you would no longer have a secure device that could rent content, any unlocking would remove DRM keys.
Both my devices are rooted with unlocked bootloaders, however I don't DEMAND it, I research the products and buy the ones that allow it (or have leaked keys). Had the Asus not had the bootloader keys leaked, I would have bought something else (Xoom for eample). Let market forces dictate, not dumb Facebook and mediastorm bullcrap.

Indeed, methinks mommy and daddy didnt ever tell these idiots 'no'.
However, whilst i dont really appreciate people whingeining so much about this, no doubt the prime will get its leaked bootloader key sometime soon. Patience it seems is fast becoming a uncommon virtue.
The thing that bugs me about this whole bootloader thing is that pure Android devices like the Nexus range dont have this and google have said they dont approve of it but cant do anything about what other manufacturers do in this regard.
Some of the comments are a bit stupid and obviously by people who dont even know what they are talking about .
Regardless now anyway as Asus have announced they will provide an unlocking tool.
This is also good for TF101 users on SBKv2 as im damn sure they will also allow unlocking this too.
Great result i think !!

And the same internet crybabies will be launching a campaign to try and shame Asus into allowing them to have a unlocked bootloader AND be able to rip the DRM from video rentals, they will also force them to make the next Asus Transformer 3 also have an inbuilt coffee maker and toenail clipping facility.
I hate how the internet and social media gives a vocal minority an overinflated ego that allows them to blackmail companies to conform to their whims.

Sorry, but I have not felt the need to engineer a social media ****storm like you lot have arranged, where a vocal minority are pretending to be MUCH louder than they actually are.
If you really dislike locked bootloaders, then Tegra2 and Tegra3 platforms are not for you, as they are ALL locked using the same 128bit AES key, as it's part of the NVidia chipset.
The only tablet I am aware of that uses Tegra2 that allows unlocking is the Xoom, if you feel that strongly, don't buy Asus, but Xoom instead.
im sorry but im sure the group of people who want their devices unlocked is not a small percentage from the research ive done on android a good half of android owners are likely rooted.
the people who dont root are usually, not always but usually the people who dont know how or what it is. for your average joe user a locked bootloader means nothing now at least,(if we allow manufacturers to continue to take administrator rights away from the owner the owner will have no control what runs or doesnt run on their device). most users who are technically knowledged in computers are against locked bootloaders even if they dnt feel rooting is neccessary with asus' device(they did a good job at adding the features that were lacking due to a locked device)
ANYONE who sticks up for locked bootloaders on any computer or personal device doesnt have a clue...manufacturers are taking away your rights to do whatever you want with your device. there has already been federal judges state that changing software on a device should not void a warranty. if the tools that should be available are available then software problems can be fixed by the consumer but the manufacturer would lose money from people that would just maintain and repair their devices themselves. im sorry but it is VERY VERYimprobable that software of anykind can damage hardware. i dont think it can at all unless the tools to completely wipe a device and reload its software are non existent.
these manufacturers are only concerned with money not the customers at all. these decisions are made with greed as the driving factor.
and obviously the community that wants the rights to their devices must not be small or asud would have paid no attention....and htc who is now unlocking their devices heard that communities requests as well.
and very simple with a locked bootloader the manufacturer can put any tracking, or spyware on the device they want and the users wouldnt even know. that alone is enough to say no....i do agree with those who say if you want an unlocked device the buy a different tablet and i agree, and i think if that happened then companies like asus sales would definetly fall and companies would see and react to it. i believe this is one way to get manufacturers to listen to the community.
but when i bought my transformer i was told by commercials the salesman, and the android specifications and just the fact its open source, that my device was open sourced and developer freindly. an open source software that run on a locked device is just an oxymoron i guess that the word anyway.
i do feel honestly i was mislead to a degree and in the future i will not purchase a device until i confirm i get full administratir rights to my device. and i hope all other android users do the same..i absolutely love my asus and i would hate to have to make my choice on rights to do what i want with my device rather than the specs and quality of the device.
any device that has files i cant see change or remove is not truly my device its whoever has controll of it letting me use what they deem is ok.
and the low blow to americans was uncalled for but id have to say we are raised from birth believing we have the right to freedom and that includes our devices, and i really dontr think thats wrong what i do believe is wrong is anyone who accepts their freedoms being taken from them and then stcking up for the one who is taking those freedoms away. talk about silly
i really have no intentions of upsetting anyone with this and it is a general statement not directed to anyone other than asus really, im just stating my opinion and i believe thats another right we have. no one has to agree with me and i dont expect them to EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO AN OPINION. without being attacked for it
Sure enough Asus came through with the requests!

Hi, I saw some post on ASUS UK and ASUS Northamerica Facebook, that ASUS canceled the ICS on the TF101, because of lack of resources with the ongoing ICS problems on tshe prime.
Can somebody confirm this, or is it just a rumor?

Samuel Müller So sad, ASUS stopped ICS development for the TF101. Yesterday I called a ASUS Service Centre in the US, after been switched a few times, I got a service technician on the line. On my ICS questions he told me because the trouble with TF Prime they have no resources left for the Original Transformer TF101.
After the ASUS ICS announcement for the TF101 last October, the release was postponed many times and ASUS Singapore told the customers, that the prime and the TF101 get ICS the same day. Then it was postponed again to mid February and again to February/March. ASUS stopped the ICS adjustments for the TF101 in the middle of January. They where not able to handle both transformer, because of lack of resources then they stopped the ICS port for the TF101 completely. I don't think "Samuel Müller" speaks on behalf of Asus and neither does a random service tech.
I won't believe any of this until it's confirmed by Asus themselves in an official way.
Also, I find it highly unlikely that they would cancel ICS. It's supposedly almost done and the backlash would be huge.
Just another guy getting his couple of minutes of internet fame. Moving on ...
I don't think Asus is really that stupid (well, I've learned that there really are stupid people.. but still..) to lose customers over a "lack of resources" ? I'm sure they'd lose more resources in not pushing an upgrade which should be somewhere in their cost-benefit analysis. In any case, let's not forget that Apple is a master at marketing, and that this is a perfect opportunity to strike at one of their competitors.. I'm not saying that these guys work for Apple, but if I were in Apple's company, I'd be telling my marketing team to go run negative publicity on Asus (discreetly, because Apple must be seen as above the rest and therefore does not need to market against people) because this is an awesome opportunity.
This **** better not be true. Its not our fault the Prime is a POS.

It can be good news too, I can finally sell it without wait to the update.
Asus probably snagged many 1st time Asus customers with the TF101, by having some longer term support for the TF101, it encourages you to try them again in the future when the TF101 is ready for being replaced. Most people own their devices for many years, and are not the gadget obsessed junkies who change device at 6/12 month intervals.
So I am hoping this rumour and speculation is not at all true. Otherwise this is highly likely to be my first and last Asus product.
Come on people I can't believe you guys are falling for this crap. Some joe bloggs posts some crap on the us fb page and you lot take it as fact.

Good stuff is still worthless if you have no love from the vendor. Mark my words, asus does not care about it's past customers, only seeing them as potential future revenue, that's why the newer, shinier stuff always gets the upgrade, but the older stuff (same general chipset, not that much different), screw those guys, time for them to upgrade. It's the exact same greedy corporate mindset that apple has.
I took a risk buying the Transformer, but now i'm wiser for it. Definately won't be buying ASUS stuff again soon, and my next tablet/phone will probably be a Motorola.

HTC first, now ASUS, I hope ACER will join the bunch.
You're new here, aren't you?
Never expect anything positive from Acer and thank whichever god or gods you believe in should they accidentally actually do something positive.

Woweeee..
But i to agree with you about acer.I think after the device is no longer valid it could maybe happen..But even then i do not see it. They are always answering Absolutely no.
I find it interesting that SO many people trash Acer, yet, apparently, purchased their products. Since I've known Acer to be very consistent in their products, support, warranties, etc... for years... I wonder why these people would have purchased an Acer product in the first place. Perhaps they all received them as gifts. Surely, anyone who thought SO little of a company would never give them their hard-earned cash for their products.

Heaven forbid we have the entitlement to do what we want with our devices! Acer would never change how the bootloader worked after it went on the market.
It would be impossible and never a thing that happened.

You are so right. Man, I wish acer had done something positive. Creating the A500 was an awful, shameful thing to do!

I think this is all wrong..
most of us Love the A500 . its hardware and True ability.well ability we would have if it were not locked.. BUT WE CAN NOT STAND ACER'S POLICIES regarding how they treat there customers
I think the above best suites this situation.. For me anyway.

Let me offer another prespective...
Iconia vs. Ipad = $300 (There or about)
Iconia vs. Transformer = $50??? (plus or minus)
Iconia vs. Galaxy or Xoom??? Dont even bother
I was able to root in a few hours thanks to the tutorials in XDA's dev section and dont particulary care for anything stock.
Based on the price differences of tablets with comparable hardware I think we should be quite happy with what we have. I bought my tab on boxing day at a price point that I did not expect to get ICS for.
Why the gripes folks?
Since we have nvflash, we can run even custom bootloader; so there is absolutely no security on the device. Right now the process is a bit complicated, so you have to wait for stock bootloader with working fastboot oem unlock

yes i have been watching the work in your Dev thread. and also on the on acer tablet users website. There seems to be a built in unlock method with icon type screen. So if wHhat i read over there is true Acer's Push of ICS To the a200 has a built in unlock mech.
So it looks like acer has been watching and listening.
I think moving forward a lot of manufacturers will be making the bootloaders unlockable. Mostly because it's a way to compete now. A lot of people say the "average user" doesn't care about or doesn't understand root, updates, ROMs, etc.
In reality there are probably just as many "power" users as "average". Guess where a lot of them go if someone makes their hardware more open. Locked down hardware becomes undesirable. That's sales they don't get. That's recommendations they might not get. That's a strike against them in reviews.
Money might be what's moving this but I'm certainly not complaining. If it turns out the developers and engineers behind these companies understand where we come from, that's even better.
I Agree it seems to be a tread to unlock them especially on NON Contract devices. I can kinda understand if say you get a 400.00 device for 125.00 attached to a 2 year contract how the Carrier has a right to restrict that device to there Services only. But after that two years when the device is on its way out. They should then Totally unlock the device..
with the above said NONE OF that should apply to the A500 . A501 if you bought it on a contract subsidized with a lower price to stay with the company They have right to lock .. THIS i believe is the force behind Manufactures locking devices. Either pressure from carriers . or locking them as a incentive to get carries to use there device.as well as they think it says them tech support dollars. The tech support dollars saved .Well i believe they loose as many Tech savy customers a dollars saved.
I so hope they just allow unlocks for all devices
Link is actually for the Transformer Prime TF201
Just wanted to point out that the official tool linked in the original post (remember that post? It was about the Asus TF101? I know it didn't have to do with Acer so you may have forgotten...) is actually only available for the TF201 (Transformer Prime) running ICS. There does not appear to be an official unlock tool for the TF101.
Yeah it need to be unlocked it like have a PC without a bios

Who are "we"? I sure as hell don't have it. Lots of people don't have nvflash. For us the TF101 is as locked down as they come.
Only releasing the SBKv2 (and v3 and v4 and v5 etc) keys or unlocking the bootloaders is acceptable.
Yet Asus has yet to release anything at all.
Colour me disappointed.

"We" are those who own an a500. Welcome to the iconia a500 general forum.
BTW the transformer, being a tegra device, does indeed have nvflash. Seems its useless as pointed out below. Forgive my ignorance.

Indeed it does, but unless you have a secure boot key version 1 TF101, nvflash does not work . What the above poster is talking about is that most of the current TF101s on the market have secure boot key version 2 and up which means nvflash is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
