I don't want to get into the details of my upcoming presentation, I'm not in sales. We're looking into potential tools in my workplace. I need suggestions for reasons why the Evo is an ideal smart phone. I've already outlined the obvious (Android's apps, large screen, 4G, fast...) and I DO NOT want to compare it with the iPhone.
I'm looking for bells and whistles (because of my target audience), things that other phones can't do--stupid cell phone tricks like, using your laptop remotely with your android device, that sort of thing...
I just need a few suggestions... thanks.

Presentation you say? How about HDMI?
Plug your phone into a massive projector or TV.
Then play a video on youtube about some features and you're good.
Also mobile hotspots/tethering means people can connect to your phone through wifi and use your 3G-4G internet on any device.
It has an err kickstand.
If you really wanted to you could run a desktop operating system on it, though you would need to root..
8MP camera for great still shots in ample lit rooms.
Some cool games in the market.
Of course theres flash!!

if we're talking stock unrooted, i really like the intergration sense did with contacts/facebook/twitter/gmail. i also show off the kickstand (it gets more oooh/aaah reactions than i expected).
tethering and a good cellular signal (lol you'd be surprised how many people ask me that) also comes up.
Show them Proxoid and explain the free tethering if they root.
Get a copy of LogMeIn Beta (it's floating around on here...) and show it.
Qik/Fring video chat
Google Voice
Google Maps + Navigation (If any of the people you're showing to are travelers/sales, show them the turn-by-turn navigation on the BIG screen, for free.)
SwiftKey and Swype
Voice Dial/Search
Gesture Search
Show them all their Google stuff syncs to it (email, contacts, etc.) so if they lose their phone, it breaks, whatever, they still have everything important.
Dropbox (Very useful for sales, doing presentations and whatnot)

How about voice-to-text feature.
Show them the screen; all 4.3 inches
if they are iphone users, show them you can install an app from the sd card without rooting your phone, the turn by turn is good to show off, facebook intergration, high quailty youtube vids,

All kidding aside, the kickstand is a huge one. If you're in a 4G area, big seller there, notification LED for missed calls/texts/emails/etc, front camera, HDMI if you have a good TV there.
Take off the battery cover and show them the MANLAND hiding inside!

Ok, PhoneMyPC is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. That is an intense app. Thanks, I'd never heard of it. I'll try it tonight.
RemoteDroid - use your phone as a trackball keyboard to control your computer on the same wifi network, useful for powerpoint presentations etc (it's also been recently open sourced)
USB webcam - although in its infancy, allows you to use the evo's camera as a webcam on your pc. Its choppy, but it works if you're in a pinch.
Touchdown - An email client with activesync support for exchange accounts, one of the only mail apps that allowed me to access mail at work
Rockplayer - Plays a variety of multimedia files without the need to recompress, simply drag/drop to sdcard and play
Astrid tasks - An open source todo list manager that you can schedule notifications for, also has a widget for easy viewing of pending tasks.
PureCalendar - Self explanatory
Gmote.
With Gmote, you can use your phone as a remote control for your PC or laptop, including using it as a keyboard if you want. I use it often for PowerPoint presentations.

Cool apps not found in market and some great unknown apps that are in the market. You'll get some cool ideas here as well as download links.
Don't forget to highlight Google Maps & Navigation...as it's hands down the best maps GPS application out there BAR NONE - and it's free.
A few people also mentioned this, but the text-to-speech integration is also insanely cool.
And Swype (or really swapping out any stock keyboard) is a nice touch, as most phones are locked to a single input type.
If your phone is rooted, it also wouldn't hurt to use ShootMe or the other screenshot app I'm drawing a blank on ATM...I believe you can even remotely display the phone interface on a PC, which does wonders for any kind of presentation.
Then there's the cheese - games, live wallpaper.
I bought my TF as a toy/media consumption device but I'm finding more and more reasons to use it for work. Especially after enabling ad-hoc wifi to connect to my HTC HD2.

No war stories yet. Considering droid/tablet apps for the fed govt. The platform is gaining ground now that the feds are contracting with Google for cloud services.
That's strange, I didn't have to enable ad hoc WiFi to tether with my Droid Incredible (running CyanogenMod 7.0.3)... but it was terribly slow and the Market was basically unusable. I wonder if that's why?
Using Splashtop (well, MyCloud) inside my LAN for work purposes... No war stories, really.
I have apps for web development (mostly putty and some text editor with ftp access) ready in case I have an emergency situation when I'm out of home. But never had to do it yet. It wouldn't be easy because I don't have the keyboard dock yet.
Working in IT I've found myself using my TF101 for 75% of my work. With tools like LogMeIn, Wyse Pocket Cloud, Overlook Fing, andSMB, SharesFinder, ASProxy and Connect Bot I can basically do everything I need at my clients right on my tablet as long as they have a WiFi AP.
The only thing that is seriously lacking is serious Office document work. I've tried the 4 major Office suites, and yes I paid for all of them, Docs2Go, Office Suite Pro, Quick Office Pro HD and the included Polaris Office. From my experience, Polaris Office is hands down the best of the bunch overall and its good that it was included in our TF101's but even with the best android tablet optimized office suite editing and generating serious documents is cumbersome at best. It takes me almost 4 times the amount of time to copy an invoice, rename it, edit it and send it out even with the keyboard dock.
So I still use my ThinkPad for serious office document work, printing and to connect to devices via serial ports like Cisco and FortiNet network devices.
Now if devs can get something like Ubuntu to dual boot on our tablets then the Office document problem is solved with OpenOffice and if drivers can be made for USB ethernet and serial adapters to work with Honeycomb then I might just sell my laptop.
I had purchased the TF for 1/3 play, 2/3 work, when on the road - thinking I could use it as a secondary monitor for my thinkpad using idisplay. Fact is, idisplay's refresh rate is worse than I thought - it is virtually unusable (mouse moves way too slow), but still I'm using it to view my emails, to-do list, or specs for a project...
Yeah I use it all the time, I didnt even buy it for work reasons, but I found that it makes my job a lot easier
I work as a marketing assistant and its my job to document the production and make production instructions to the products my company produces.
So I bring my TF down from the office to the warehouse and make articles on our internal production wiki and take pictures. I couldnt use a regular laptop since I have to be quick and agile and walk around and between the machines we construct.
Working with my TF works SO much better than running up and down with papers.
I write a lot for work, so I am planning to use it as soon as I can get the docking station (not readily available in our parts yet).
How did you manage to connect it to an adhoc network? Or did you find a way to establish WiFi tethering in the AP mode? I am still at loss for this issue.

I am kinda using it for work as I have my corp email account setup and my EVO does native tethering.
I have a blue tooth keyboard coming tomorrow for typing longer emails/documents.
I just need to get VPN Connections working for my offices Cisco VPN so I can RDP to servers and desktops via 2X.
I use Dolphin HD as my web browser and it does a great job over the stock browser.
Citrix client - how is your experience
How is your experience with the Citrix client?
I have it installed since I got the transformer with intention to use to open our work applications. It works, but it takes extremelly long to establish the connection (5 minutes) until the application is fully opened. Its not the network problem. I hit the same Citrix server from a laptop and use the same wifi, it works reasonably fast.
The issue is only with the connection time that is so long, once its connected, it works pretty well.
If I hit it from our internal network, it runs like crazy-very fast.

The initial connection for an application is something about 15 seconds to our unif. Once it is running, there is no more lag. You might want to look into it with your IT department and/or citrix. 5 minutes seems much to long!

Hi Kovla,
you need a modified version of the file called wpa_supplicant - then push that file to the right directory on your TF and set the correct permissions.
I followed these instructions and they worked perfectly for me - I used the third method listed. I have a rooted device - I've also done this using root explorer instead of adb. the modified file is attached to the thread.

My experience has been exactly the same as yours. Slow to conenct but then works fine. I haven't tried it internally because when I'm on the internal work network i don't need a tunnel.

I have noticed some typing lag in certain situations. Email and documents have been fine but typing into the browser sometimes gives me a small slow down. This did seem to get a little better with the firmware updates and then a little better again when I flashed Prime 1.4 - but that could be unrelated.
I take mine to work since we have software on our network that doesn't allow you access to certain sites (based on keywords I believe). Simply tether to my Inspire 4g and away I go!
Yes, I use mine at work...
to listen to tunes! Will also be using it to test HTML5/CSS3 websites for Androib tablet devices, and that other iOS (shudder) thing when I get some down time.

I hear your pain, we use Lotus Domino at work too, however we have IMAP enabled on our server, so that with Kaiten Mail makes it usable. Still waiting for Android Lotus Notes Traveller which I believe is very good. Ask your IT manager.

Been a long time since I posted here.
I don't use my Nook as much as I I could or I think I should. I think the main reason is that I haven't been using apps which sync across devices for fear of ruining the very good battery life.
What are some good apps which integrate with say Chrome? What things have you found useful? Do you toggle WiFi on and off? If so do you then need to hit sync or does that partial wakelock reciever for detecting that WiFi is on and off do that for you? Or will this app keep trying to sync even when there is no wifi?
I think if I start using something like ReaditLater again (tap button in chrome, sync and then read on Nook)... I'll probably use it more.
Also, pulling apps off Google Play and installing the apk was better for battery but I can't get the apk extractor websites to work anymore. Did anyone have a workaround for that?
One more thing, I have been using the latest Cyanogenmod and I notice it comes with PrivacyGuard. Now, the interersting thing about that is that PrivacyGuard now has options to block autostart, keep device awake and wake up device. So this could be useful to put in a ROM, or something like it, bearing in mind the nice battery life we get. Or, maybe have 2 modes - one with everything disabled for hikes, and another for use at home where a charger is handy and the auto sync is more useful.

Yeah, Renate NST's adbsync program is definitely going to be your best (and really only) option that fits your description.
Thinking about it, there's probably more efficient ways to do it.
For example, Evernote, Unified Remote Full, Wiki Encyclopedia Offline. I don't think Pocket (formerly ReaditLater works anymore very unfortunately... that was my favorite thing)
But of course, getting these things working on the older Android now could be difficult. How do I get the apks from play these days now the various website extractors don't work?
And ways to automate adbsync. For example, have it as a schedule in the background along with adb connect to your Nook. But remember to give the Nook a static IP on the WiFi by assigning via MAC on the router.
If you save pages as .pdf and automate the sync that's good but browsing pages as pdf isn't great.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before but you can access Evernote through the web interface. Probably similar for OneNote too.
A browser I heard is good, possible better than Opera now is NakedBrowser and the apk is available from the authors website.
I found a way to get the apk is to find an old phone to install too and then use an apk extractor app. A desktop extractor would still be better

The problem with advanced is that I have to wake up the nook, turn on WiFi and then hit my sync script on the desktop. Because of this I only use it if I have a lot to read, like a full book. I envisioned using it for just reading lengthier forum posts and white papers.
A start I think is to disable the screen saver.
Next will be to put enabling WiFi and keep awake while charging, and then disable after a period if the user fails to cancel and it's unplugged.
If you know how to do either of these things please let me know.

Actually there's a fix for tasker asking for a .jar. So it should be possible tonautomate connecting to WiFi and adb WiFi. Just a matter of getting tasker license or something else. AutomateIT won't run.

My Nook is currently out of commission, but I know at one point I had Pocket running (while it was still called ReadItLater), so there might be an old apk floating around that works. Alternatively, you can setup Wallabag, which is the same thing but run on your own server. Between that and a feed reader, I had thousands of articles to pick from whenever I picked up my Nook. It was quite a delight.
Also, there are a couple of wifi saving tools that can be found in F-Droid. If I recall, I used one called Battery Fu to have my Nook connect, force a sync, then disconnect once every few hours. It worked quite well.

I looked up wallabag but when I try to install every version back to 1.6 I get the message 'older SDK'. I guess you had an older version... but I don't know how far back i have to go.

Is there any way to use the NST (rooted) as an external monitor, instead of the original monitor? (not duplicate or extend the display, but rather - replace it)
I'd want to use it with a PC and/or android phone.

That's a good question.
Err, if you mean as a general screen for another device, I don't think that's too practical.
If you mean an independent, secondary status screen for another device, ok.
Do you want to push graphic bits to the NST? That's not particulary efficient.
Do you want to push data to an app that will format it?
Do you want to push HTML to it?
Do you want to push over ADB? The USB gadget exists already.
You could use port forwarding to talk to an app on the NST.
You could use shell commands, just don't use any Java things or you have the load of Zygoting.
You could use WiFi, either through ADB or just through sockets.
You could use a USB HID gadget.
This would be in some ways the most elegant.
It would allow your non-rooted Android master device (or Windows box) to automatically identify and start its application.
NST does not have configfs or sys.usb.config, so it's not as simple to write your own USB gadget.
Still, it should be possible.

I purchased the device, having read how easy it is to root and all, and only when I got it and started actually doing, I realized that there are hardly any apps that work on it anymore (if I could just run Instapaper, Google Docs\Sheets, Chrome, it would be the perfect thing for me). So now I'm trying to come up with alternative ways to get the device to do pretty much what I want it to do.
I'm also open to other suggestions for how to use the NST for these purposes.
Screenstream from the Google play appstore will stream screen images from an Android device to a web browser, works on my note 8 to my nook glowlight plus. With a mouse and keyboard you might get what you need.

Hey, I have a similar question and perhaps @Renate NST can help me here?
I'm using my NST as a Standalone monitor to display a PHP page with some information about our house. Temperature etc values that I get from a raspberry. The PHP reloads itself every 60 seconds.
My problem at first was, that the screensaver at one point started. I have solved this with @Renate NST answer from a couple years ago.

So the screensaver doesn't fire, BUT at one point, and I haven't quite figured out yet, at what specific time that is, the internal browser just can't get the webside anymore by itself and displays the error message that the webside is not available. If I reload this webside, by clicking on the nook, manually, everything works fine again for some period.
My guess is, that there is some timeout for the WIFI or the general internet connections or that the internal timeout for websides might be to short.
I have not yet found a setting in the settings.db that suggests, I could change this behaivor.
Anyone an idea? That would help me alot because for the the NST is the best information screen that I could think of.

btw: I have tried to integrate a simulated mouseclick via JS into the webside, but that didn't help.

Hey,
thx for the fast answer but I might have misscommunicated something.
The Rpi3 is my server and works like a charm, so I don't have to change anything there. If i connect with my phone or my laptop the display webside will just reload "forever" like it should.
But I want to use the NST with it's internal browser to display that webside continously during the day. So there must be something within the nook that is idling of the connections.
I thought it might be WIFI_SLEEP_POLICY_NEVER but I cannot find that value in the Nook settings.db.
btw. Can I safely remove the amazon appstore in the nook? I never use it and I cannot kill it with Relaunch

Yes. I believe a long-press on the app in ReLaunch will offer "uninstall" as an option. I think.

Hey renate,
thx for the advise. But what would that accomplish to the complete seperate NST System. The RPi is always on and always hast the internet conncetion without any problems whatsoever.
What I need to know would be how to keep the internet connection in the NST alive.
for example: There is an always on, while plugged option. If I connection the NST to a power source the internet connection stays alive, but I want exately this option also, when it'S not plugged in.

I'm just saying that the RPi's with the built in WiFi had such squirrelly problems with WiFi that when they first came out I gave up and used a separate USB WiFi adapter.
Disabling power management is a good idea.
Are you sure that you're losing WiFi while the Nook remains awake?
Have you set the screen_off_timeout for a sufficiently large number of milliseconds?
Does pinging the Nook constantly stop it from disconnecting?

Hey Renate,
The RPi is not even connected via WIFI but via LAN, because the WIFI Interface just isn't fast enough.
No, I'm not sure that the WiFi connection gets lost, but's it's defintely something in the Nook that looses the connection. The constant pinging Idea sounds like a good shot. I'll defintely try that out.
So I have not tried out the pinging idea but after deinstalling Amazon Market (which i don't need) the problem vanished. Now the nook stays on and connected till the battery dies. Perfect. I have no clue why the Amazon market has an influence here, but I don't really care so much. thx for your help.

I wouldn't fixed NST to a wall and think that I have read here about app used here to do that job. Either someone is gonna fix TLS issue or maybe if we assume using NST as display it could be possible to use home Wi-Fi router or mobile phone as secure server or part of VPN that will negotiate TLS issue for NST. I always doubted slightly that NST can offer full internet browser experience but something in line of htttp web grab in reader mode might be good enough for some application. News (RSS), weather and I believe that maybe EPG TV guide are not impossible to accomplish. Only question about this remains will NST embedded HTML browser will be good for the job of showing the grab from web pages or is Opera in reader mode better for such job. Time to look up for a good web grabber...

Curl can often bypass SSL checks and grab web content. It runs on the NST. I've used it in a few of my apps. Whether the data it gets can be used by the app the blogger mentions is something else.
@nmyshkin that is nice idea! And seems exactly in line of what I wrote. I do not know is curl accessible from Android layer. I pondered the same thought more in line of trying to use port of Lynx to Android I have seen someone did although who knows is that possible to do on this version of Android?
I've written a status app (that I never use).
It polls two different servers for JSON info and displays it using regular Android graphics stuff.
It uses Retrofit for polling.

Hmm, you got me thinking about this stuff.
There's the whole let the Nook poll some data service and display it on a web browser sort of thing.
I don't really need or want that.
I was thinking more of like as a status output device for a headless Raspberry Pi.
No, not as a terminal, more like status for a solar/home/whatever system.
The Nook doesn't poll anything, it just sits there waiting for text or graphics.
But here's the part I like, you don't use any WiFi.
You just plug your Nook into the Raspberry Pi.
Of course it has adb.
You can get adb for Raspberry Pi: sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb
Now you can set up port forwarding:

Then all you need is something on the RPi to connect to port 6666 and spit out stuff.
On the Nook you need an app to serve port 6666 and do display stuff.
I've already made a clock as proof of concept and it works fine.
You could just use text fields or compose a whole graphic frame on the RPi and send that over.
Heck, if you send whole frames you wouldn't even need to run the Android subsytem.
I could probably get that working on a Kobo.
A very sophisticated example follows.
It allows you to individually update separate fields.
These could be in tables with borders or labels or whatever.

You know, the thing I like about this is that the NST is the server.
It's a bit like running X11, but much more lightweight.
And if you want you can still run this over WiFi instead of ADB forwarding.
This electric sign app is really close to something I'm looking for. What I'd like to do is, instead of a screenshot of a URI, to take a screenshot of what I've got open in the device.
I'd like to use this with Google Calendar, and Opera Mini surprisingly seems to work with the HTML version. I think Opera Mini keeps the calendar updating with AJAX or something, so all I'd need an app like this to do would be to, when it's running, take a screenshot of what's on the screen right before sleeping and set that as wallpaper, then wake every X minutes, screencap what's there and go back to sleep with that as the new wallpaper. The end result should be an always-on, low power Google Calendar.
EDIT: For anyone looking later, I was wrong. Opera Mini does not keep updating Google Calendar, you have to refresh it manually, which makes this slightly more complicated...

Somewhere on the site there is a discussion of a setup that copies the current screen into a screensaver folder so that, for example, a map remains visible when the device sleeps. Search for it.

For plain HTML stuff you could throw something together with Webkit instead.
For the adventurous you could use the Google Calendar API

I tend to agree with you. As I already wrote above something akin to Pocket/ReadItLater and similar might be accomplished using simple web grab I presume and offline HTML browser. I have thought that it looks odd that beside "hidden" (and sadly for us practically unusable) browser NST have another HTML viewer. Reason for that might be it was intended to be used for B&N "browsing" through their shop that they periodically download to NST or maybe for presentation of e-book material of older type that was for all intents and purposes just web archived HTML page or perhaps for viewing magazines purchased through B&N.
In essence even epub use elements of CSS/HTML but that is another story. Maybe it could be possible to make some poor man Pocket like offline browser if we somehow find the way to cobble together parts of some RSS, bookmarks syncing, e-mail listing, forum/blog viewer and approach that me or nmyshkin proposed here. In my opinion hardest part if some web grab is possible would be to render it in usable form for this device. That mean turning of ads, flash/video, loading pictures only on demand (or better in on/off way) and show only text information. Now what "browser" is suitable for this is yet to determine. I know that very old Opera could turn off animation an pictures but as I remember it did that in such way that it didn't download them at all to save bandwidth. Maybe it could be somehow set to load web archives in such manner? Think about it as giving an command that some web page be "printed as epub". It might be to large task to accomplish. Pocket worked if I remember right in such way that selected page was sent to dedicated server which did the trimming part for user and allowing him/her to download that content on other device to be read later on. Here I think that if we could sync for example one of bookmark folders from a computer with NST and achieve web grab of those links in usable form we might have something. It is a matter for the debate isn't Opera mobile and style management already wrote on here in forum same or even better. Problem would be that page reformat/rendering would be tasked to NST itself and I am not sure if it is up to the task or am I capable to cobble such thing alone for that matter. Something flashed in my mind didn't Calibre had some news reader? If it does then I am inventing the wheel here. Still it would be nice to be able to have some even limited ability to open a link to a news story from RSS feed or a forum/blog we follow or e-mail listing etc.
For Calendar I hope that some kind of dedicated app combining Calendar, planner and to do list can be found to already exist for this device.

Thanks for these! The ersatz Google News is amazing in that even the external links are text-only! It makes my Google News app obsolete! Great with Opera Mini. Many, many things to look at there

I am glad that I have contributed with something useful. As have already guessed from mine posts in this thread I have contemplated heavily about what could be more useful for NST some text-only browser akin to old trusty Lynx or some rewrite/redefinition of working Opera. One thing lead to another and at first I thought to maybe open and disclosed source for firefox readability extension/addon ported for working version of Opera somehow is a way to go but as I always check all aspects of mine quirky ideas I stumbled upon this. It is poor man solution but as I remembered that you follow NPR and they have text mode only site felt obliged to mention it here.
In line with nmyshkin's idea of using curl if some information display akin to the one linked in the first post is needed does something like cron from Linux can be run on NST?
"Print as epub" exist as web form. Here is the result of that one. https://dotepub.com/ I tried to use online form there and results were mediocre but as I understand they also offer their API to developers etc. That I presume might draw attention from someone on xda.
In defense of the intended idea for using NST as info screen arguably touch technology it uses is best for those screens. Mine guess is that its deemed as such because it is most easily scalable from the currently available techniques. This also raise the question why B&N did not already made readers of much larger format like A4 paper size screen. Is the display cost really that high and prohibitive? On the other news rumors have spread that they have partnered with Lenovo not only for the new generation of tablets but also for new e-readers. Has anyone find some leek about possible specifications?

I agree. Cheap bastards! I can't say is that 149DPI good for LCD screen but is sub par for e-reader. They obviously targeted minimum resolution comparable to low resolution printing and hope to get away with it. Considered that I expressed criticism to level of development of current color e-ink technology being bellow resolution of NST by about 60% you can bet I find this to little question is does it comes to late for B&N. Still I am more interested about e-ink display device that rumor say is also planned but nothing is revealed so far.
