What the post above you said. Root the phone, install your choice of tether apps, go to town.
I have a cheap Virgin Mobile account - $25 a month unlimited data. Rooted, installed Wi-Fi tether, done

go to any country outside the US
get any data plan
enjoy free tethering on your pc and on your tablet.
or install any wireless tether app. those are available on the market, but you need root.

Wireless tether

I rooted my Droid X and got the wireless tether app to work. My only question is if I use my phone to tether will any extra data charges show up on my account? I have the unlimited data package, but I don't have tethering on my account.

you will not be charged using the Wireless Tether app. Assuming you're refering to this one http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
That's the one. Thank you very much.

Ya it works great as long as only one device is connected. However with mine other android phones can't see my wifi as an option, but laptops work fine.

Thats because it is a Ad-Hoc type of wifi. There is still a known problem with windows 7 and ad-hoc networks though (you have to re-establish the connection every time you want to use it on the pc). If you are running xp/vista, you should have no problem reconnecting every time.
There ARE hacked versions of the Motorola Hotspot app that will allow true, non ad-hoc, Hotspot functionality, while still not having to pay for the package. I am using it on my X with Fission 2.1 ROM. TeamBlackHat released it.. search and enjoy.

Do note that VzW can still see your data usage (how much used) and data rate (I THINK they can see this), so they'll have a good idea that you're tethering when you're not supposed to (contract violation, essentially) if you do this too much.
If you're sneaking around VzW to use tethering without paying, then do it sparingly when needed, not excessively... unless you want your contract terminated and other penalties assessed. This isn't the same thing as voiding a warranty, after all. You're essentially pirating bandwidth from them by doing this. Not that I have much of an issue with that, just warning you so you know that they do take this seriously.

Mobile hotspots a no go.

I have been trying to get mobile hotspot to work on 1.83 to much disappointment. I have it rooted, I tried gladenabler, and I have even installed gingerblur as last rom it removed the verification altogether.
This time it is just not going away. I have also selected =false using root explorer for that one value that was listed in a previous post.
I am not on att I'm in another country with no tethering restrictions.
Any help would make me very grateful.
Thanks in advance.

Can't edit from my phone but in an update to what I wrote earlier. Editing the build.prop file actually worked but required a reboot.
In retrospect I should have thought of that but it wasn't listed in the op.
So, if you are also getting this problem
Follow the directions on this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057665
Then REBOOT AFTER.
Should be golden.

On your APN type just add tether after default. So your APN type looks like this APN type: default, tether
Mine works...I live in Malaysia

Wifi-Tether Android
Just use http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Once you rooted and enabled side-loading install Wifi-Tether android , that works for me
I actually have an employee plan so 40 for unlimited and tethering but if you add the apn u can also use barnicle wifi tether. U can't find it on the market (anymore/F-u too att) you'll have to Google but it is better than using my included option in network settings. I have also used the open one on code.Google.com and has been great. I love my atrix and webtop and lapdock but if I had a chance at getting it all on tmo or sprint, I'd jump ship. Making Google hide apps from it's own users? Wtf? If I were sprint I'd be praying att buys tmo because everyone would run to sprint. If I didn't have said plan, I'm not sure I could take the abuse they give their high paying customers.

I'm sorry, new to this, but what's wrong with using an app like 'barnacle wifi tether' to create a mobile hotspot?

You could also take the SIM out (or put the phone in airplane mode) and search via Wifi to find a tethering app on the market...

Sideload Barnacle or download PDANet
yea I use an unlocked AT&T atrix on Rogers and couldn't get the hot spot to work either. Just downloaded the android wifi tether from the market and it works fine. No need for the built in one.

The OS built-in HotSpot for free? Nope, not gonna happen until root and BootLoader unlock and we can flash a custom ROM.
However, there are a few programs that can do data sharing (tethering) without root, which do it in a method that it is not the same as the hotspot so it doesn't trigger the need to subscribe to the hotspot feature. I believe EasyTether has touted that, but it is for Wired/BlueTooth connections only, and not as a mobile WiFi hotspot.
All in all, if you want to use carrier provided features on a stock build, be prepared to pay for the privilege. Just be glad you are grandfathered into the unlimited plans.
EasyTether works great but you need the USB cable plugged into your PC and you need to install the EasyTether app on your PC also. Its $5 on Amazon App Store.

Wifi tether

Hey guys I just rooted my play and wanted to test out wifi tether on my ps3. I turn it on and it works fine but then the built in hotspot turns on and then it turns of disabling my 3g connection. Any help?

What tether app are you using, if any? What carrier are you on?
Wifi tether 11 verizon
Sent from my R800x using xda premium
I didn't spend a ton of time on it bc the Play is my son's phone, but I couldn't get wireless tether for root users to work. I ended up downloading Barnacle Wifi Tether free from the market. The only downside is it creates an ad hoc network instead of an infrastructure one, but it works like a charm.
I got both but neither work for ps3

If you use the Uk firmware on a R800x then you can tether and mobile hotspot using the stock tether and hotspot in settings and you wont be routed to verizon's page, it works great
Im working on editing the verizon firmware to use the built in tether/hotspot without being routed to verizons page.

Any luck? I can't tether on verizon for crap
I recommend Barnacle for Game Console, and EasyTether for computers.
When it comes to gaming, Barnacle works very well, I live in a village built in the middle of a cornfield and I get all bars on Black Ops for Xbox. I'm going to try it on the Wii soon, I had to restore my Wii's NAND because some cIOS I installed screwed the network up.
EasyTether is best for Computers because it uses the USB Debugging mode.

Suitable Tether App

hey all,
I recently got a nexus 7 and I want to tether my sweet, sweet verizon 3g to it with my xplay, but none of the apps I try work. Barnacle doesn't even show up in in my n7's wifi networks list, and the Google Play release of Wifi Tether for root shows up but my n7 never connects and the app inevitable encounters errors on my xplay. Anyone have good recommendations?

I have the AT&T Xperia Play version and not rooted. I use a free app called FoxFi to Bluetooth Tether (Bluetooth DUN) to my Nexus 7. On my Nexus 7, I have PDAnet Tablet app to catch the bluetooth tether. Works great and easy to setup!
Hope this helps

I ran into that exact problem with wifi tethering in foxfi, too. Still looking for a fix
From what I can tell, bluetooth works for a basic internet connection (web browsing, etc) , but you can't do anything that requires a "wifi" connection, like downloading apps or streaming from google play services like music. It's a blessing and a curse, because it doesn't provide a full networked experience, but it saves you from potentially running through your data quota on intensive tasks which, if you have a 2GB plan like me, can be handy

I'm grandfathered into a Verizon Unlimited data plan, Once I got rooted I downloaded Barnacle Tether ( for free ) and set my phone up as a WiFi hotspot. Tested it at school back in the day and people had no problem connecting to it, had an iphone 4 and an iphone 3GS connected at the same time.
Can't you just turn the phone into a WiFi hotspot from the settings?

Nope, no such feature, and the root free tether apps require you to buy a tethering plan.
...Barnacle Tether... Install it.
Settings ----> Wireless and network ----> tethering and portable hotspot?
Yeah I agree with KindaUndisputed. I have that setting too and have used it before to let my friend download apps with his phone because he's got no internet.

Bluetooth tether sounds like an interesting concept tho, I'll have to test that out one day.

Its not locked out it just tells you you have to pay for it. But after that ruling by the FCC maybe they will stop this, I don't know.

They did, FCC made Verizon pay 2.5 million. So now there's no extra charge unless you go over the amount of data you signed up for.

I saw some users report FoxiFi was not workin on Verizon, I set foxifi up on my Dads stock non-rooted Droid Pro and it works just fine. It should work on our R800x's as well. .
