Hey guys I just rooted my play and wanted to test out wifi tether on my ps3. I turn it on and it works fine but then the built in hotspot turns on and then it turns of disabling my 3g connection. Any help?

What tether app are you using, if any? What carrier are you on?
Wifi tether 11 verizon
Sent from my R800x using xda premium
I didn't spend a ton of time on it bc the Play is my son's phone, but I couldn't get wireless tether for root users to work. I ended up downloading Barnacle Wifi Tether free from the market. The only downside is it creates an ad hoc network instead of an infrastructure one, but it works like a charm.
I got both but neither work for ps3

If you use the Uk firmware on a R800x then you can tether and mobile hotspot using the stock tether and hotspot in settings and you wont be routed to verizon's page, it works great
Im working on editing the verizon firmware to use the built in tether/hotspot without being routed to verizons page.

Any luck? I can't tether on verizon for crap
I recommend Barnacle for Game Console, and EasyTether for computers.
When it comes to gaming, Barnacle works very well, I live in a village built in the middle of a cornfield and I get all bars on Black Ops for Xbox. I'm going to try it on the Wii soon, I had to restore my Wii's NAND because some cIOS I installed screwed the network up.
EasyTether is best for Computers because it uses the USB Debugging mode.

I've tried both Barnacle and Android wifi tether, but neither seem to work with my iPad. Has anyone found a way to get either application working?

Tethering is not yet functional on this phone. It apparently is going to require a customized kernel.
Barnacle with the correct settings works for the most part on my ipad on 3g speeds. But still not able to get youtube or netflix.
So what settings are you using? I was only able to get non-3g.
Use channel 6 and make sure Skip wpa_supplicant is checked. Works mostly fine for my iPad. Can't really stream anything but I get decent page downloads and can do e-mail.
I'm using Barnacle after rooting and it works with both my macbook pro and the ipad. Using the specs in the Barnacle thread
Barnacle and iPad (iOS 3.2.1) wi-fi only. Works great.

Barnacle Legacy works. Why can't we get WiFi tether working yet or Mobile AP?
Alright, thanks for replying. I'm still having trouble with Barnacle, so I think I'll try the legacy version.

No version of Barnacle is working for me after updating today.
Is there a way to have our Xoom connect to the wireless tether ad-hoc instead of having to uses native 3G mobile hot spot app on fascinate. I know when I had the galaxy tab someone made a wpa.supplicant (think that's how it was spelled) file to put somewhere in /system/? So it could connect to phones using wireless tether.

Only if your Xoom is Rooted can you connect to Ad Hoc after a minor hack.
Root your phone and use wireless tether 3.0
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
As everyone else as said before, the only way right now is through rooting.
Root your phone. It's easier and you can share with things other than your xoom then.

Have any of you been able to connect to an ad-hoc connection with a xoom? Most of the connections have been made through handsets that do not use ad hoc mode.

What "minor hack"?????
His phone is rooted already if hes already using the Wireless Tether App from the market.
He just needs to install the newest beta which has infrastructure mode instead of Ad-Hoc, and the Xoom will identify it without any hacks on the Xoom.

Thanks for the input, but these apps are phone specific. I'm well aware of the wireless tether apps, both for root and the experimental 3.0. I've tried just about everything out there and can't get the Xoom to see my CDMA Hero running AOSP 2.3.3. Even the bluetooth tether will not connect. My laptop sees it fine, my Xoom sees an EVO that uses wireless tether. I'm afraid I may have to ditch the old Hero...
You have used 3.0 pre 4¿ that's what works for me
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Thanks again, pre 4 errors out. It does not support cdma hero. I'll b looking into settings on the Xoom now.

I tried to tether with my evo using hot spot and wireless tether with no success. It works on my laptop but not on the zoom. Has anyone got it to work on zoom using evo? If so what settings?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
A friend of mine tethered off his stock evo just fine, no issues. Dont know his settings though, but since you can only select the security type, cant be much.
Works fine for me running xoom and evo unrooted. The xoom can't tell the economy from any other wifi but my second settings are just a standard named wpa2 set hotspot. Dhcp on, always in. Everyone in a while the xoom freaks out when the evo swaps between 3g and 4g but at worst in disable and re enable wifi and I'm fine. My second switches often since we don't officially have 4g in Columbus Ohio even though I have had signals most of the time since like last August.

Mine works perfectly tethered to my Evo running CM7.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Not sure if this was resolved, but I tether off of my EVO regularly, running CM7 stock.
OP, what setup are running on your EVO?
Swyped from my EVO
From what I gather, CM7 on the Evo has infrastructure mode wifi tether by default so Android devices shouldn't have any problems seeng the SSID (as opposed to Adhoc).
Also, the latest wifi tether version (direct from the code.google.com website) now does infrastructure mode, so you shouldn't have any issues as well.

I am running my 2.2 rls5 and I cannot get it to work. It seems to be a issue with the ad hoc network. I have tried several wireless heather apps including barnacle and others. Nothing works. May have to take zoom back if I cannot tether.
I tethered my XOOM to my EVO running CM7 RC4 just fine and dandy. No problems here, move along.
Im not using the Evo but the Samsung Epic.....WAY better phone, screen is 312x better, no HDMI out but the qwerty more than makes up for it.
The biggest downside I am finding is that using the FREE wifi apps, rather than the paid ones, i find it difficult to connect to my Sprint data network on the Epic with my Xoom. I am able to connect with my Epic to the Xooms network, but it only has 1gb and it costs money to go over. I have unlimited on the Epic, but I can only tether with Mac and Windows, and some odd distros of Linux that use older wifi network managers that were compatible with ad hoc networks......No luck getting the Xoom to connect the Ad Hoc only wifi hotspot that I am able to get using free third party apps.
Using the paid app works fine, but not with the app called Wifi-Tether, or Wireless Tether.

Are you using a paid tethering app, the official included tethering app, or a third party free app that requires rooting? Are you specifically using "Wireless Tether"?
If not, then its not really relevant to the OP.
Ok so wen I turn on wifi tether it also turns on the built in wifi and then returns it off.
When it does that, built in hotspot and wifi say error. Can anyone show me alternative wifi tether apps?

I am assuming you are using Wireless Tether.
Ya, it doesn't work very well. I am using Barnacle Wifi Tether, it broadcasts ad-hoc but it works
Fortunately I also use barnacle but it doesn't work with ps3

Wow. It's just a question, and honestly, I was wondering the same thing as him. You don't need to get butthurt over this.
hey all,
I recently got a nexus 7 and I want to tether my sweet, sweet verizon 3g to it with my xplay, but none of the apps I try work. Barnacle doesn't even show up in in my n7's wifi networks list, and the Google Play release of Wifi Tether for root shows up but my n7 never connects and the app inevitable encounters errors on my xplay. Anyone have good recommendations?

I have the AT&T Xperia Play version and not rooted. I use a free app called FoxFi to Bluetooth Tether (Bluetooth DUN) to my Nexus 7. On my Nexus 7, I have PDAnet Tablet app to catch the bluetooth tether. Works great and easy to setup!
Hope this helps

I ran into that exact problem with wifi tethering in foxfi, too. Still looking for a fix
From what I can tell, bluetooth works for a basic internet connection (web browsing, etc) , but you can't do anything that requires a "wifi" connection, like downloading apps or streaming from google play services like music. It's a blessing and a curse, because it doesn't provide a full networked experience, but it saves you from potentially running through your data quota on intensive tasks which, if you have a 2GB plan like me, can be handy

I'm grandfathered into a Verizon Unlimited data plan, Once I got rooted I downloaded Barnacle Tether ( for free ) and set my phone up as a WiFi hotspot. Tested it at school back in the day and people had no problem connecting to it, had an iphone 4 and an iphone 3GS connected at the same time.
Can't you just turn the phone into a WiFi hotspot from the settings?

Nope, no such feature, and the root free tether apps require you to buy a tethering plan.
...Barnacle Tether... Install it.
Settings ----> Wireless and network ----> tethering and portable hotspot?
Yeah I agree with KindaUndisputed. I have that setting too and have used it before to let my friend download apps with his phone because he's got no internet.

Actually, after flashing CM9 RC2 I know have those features! Tho I haven't used them yet cuz like I said, I use Barnacle tether.
Bluetooth tether sounds like an interesting concept tho, I'll have to test that out one day.

Its not locked out it just tells you you have to pay for it. But after that ruling by the FCC maybe they will stop this, I don't know.

They did, FCC made Verizon pay 2.5 million. So now there's no extra charge unless you go over the amount of data you signed up for.
