I haven't checked the bands, but I suspect you may only get Gprs/edge, no 3g.
Also, the telstra rom if its still on the phone probably doesn't have the data settings for your network. Find and download connectionsetup.cab and install, or move to a different rom.
If the 3g bands don't match, changing rom wont help,, you will only ever get Gprs and edge.

Go read the stickies at the top of general, Wm 6.5 q&a and rom dev threads. Remember, telstra is the same as regular, as far as roms are concerned. You can use hspl 3 and 4.

HTC Hero Telus - BASICS

Ok, got my HTC Hero Telus, but am kind of overwhelmed by the root and terms used.
Can somenoe just briefly fill me in, what does ROM actually mean and do?
I've been searcing the forums, and found a bunch of updates for RADIO on the Hero, what is this for? What are these updates for?
What's best way to start rooting, and how to learn all these ROMs, Radio, and other terms?
THANKS!
Welcome to XDA!
A ROM is the operating system on the phone. It's called ROM because it gets installed to the phone's "Read Only Memory." There are custom ROMs to replace the stock one, you'll find those in the Hero Android Development forum. This forum also has plenty of posts about how to root/flash your phone.
The radio is the firmware that goes into the phone's radio device. Generally it's best to have the latest radio version installed, currently it's the JU version found in the Official Radio ROMs link in the Hero Android Development forum.
As far as the Telus Hero itself is concerned, there are a couple threads about it in the "Hero General" and "Hero Q&A" forums. Any common problem should be tackled in one of those threads. I think I was the first one to root a Telus Hero (unless someone kept quiet about it) so I've been through just about every Telus-specific issue that has arisen. If you go through those threads and still have questions, I'll be happy to help... but please look through the forums first.
EDIT: Start on page 2 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576826
Thanks for the response Craig, you definitely cleared it up for me.
I'm using the TELUS hero on AT&T, so is there anything different regards the root and radio update process because I'm on AT&T?

That shouldn't make a difference to the radio/root flashing process... However, I have no idea what it'll take to put an AT&T SIM card in a Telus Hero. I know it can be done, I just don't know the steps since I'm using mine on Telus.
Also, a lot of the issues that show up in that thread I linked you to are Telus-specific, so that might not help you as much as I originally hoped.
Good luck!

Using the phone on AT&T is really simple. Nothing like the complicated steps you have to do to goldcard/downgrade/root the phone. I'm using a white Telus Hero on AT&T, and didn't have any problems.
One question, though. How'd you buy it? If you bought it "unlocked" from a website like ImportGSM, then all you have to do is open the back of your old phone, take out the SIM card, and put it in the Hero. If you bought it on eBay, had somebody in Canada ship it to you, or bought it yourself from a Telus store/Best Buy/etc., then you need to unlock it first. You can get the unlock code from a number of websites, thought you'll have to pay for it. Then put your SIM card in as above and the phone will prompt you for it. After you put in the code, you're good to go!
If you want to use the internet or MMS, then there's actually one more step. You have to put in the APN settings, which tell the phone how to access the network. They can be found in the forum somewhere or by Googling for "AT&T APN".
Ya I'm using it on AT&T works fine, but I'm trying to root it but not having any luck!

Oh, ok! Sorry, I can't help you there. I'm waiting till I've got some sort of backup of the firmware that came on the phone (Or some other official upgrade meant for the North American model) before going through the process to root the phone & load a custom ROM. Just a personal preference

This is a common issue, unfortunately as discussed here:
http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/windows-phone/f/90/t/1466.aspx
I am not sure if you can even do this when you are locked out this way, but try a hard reset, in this manner:
Start the phone with end key AND Both Voume-Up and Volume-Down Pressed. You should get the uption to hard reset the phone.
If not, and if you do not have HSPL, I think a warranty return is your only other option.
I think hes talking about HSPL... Said it wont even turn on. CORRECTION: HSPL AND radio.
OP, Did you try to install a new Radio on your phone?
yeah ur right
icant turn it on

Guessing ur mobile is T-mobile HD2
U dont unlock it using hspl 2... I presume you need the unlock code from t-mobile after u submit your proof of buying (retail purchase).
After it accepts ur sim card (airtel, vodafone, aircel, BSNL etc etc...) then you hspl2 for using custom ROMs which u find in this forum.
I am having t-mobile hd2 and using it for 3 months in India with vodafone. No problems so far.
Good luck
Else use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668347
As im in India i cant go back now to usa to get the unlock code.
are there any other means

No Network after flash

Hi,
I successfully rooted my Nexus S 4G and flash it with with the gingerbread-ns4g-deck.
Everything worked fine so far. Mod looks great.
But I do not get any network service after the flash. It seems the phone is not recognizing the SIM card at all. Normally it asked for the PIN number after a reboot.
Now it doesn't. Also I have no option to choose a network manually.
I tried flashing different basebands (radios) and kernels.
Still no chance.
Thanks for your help! I live in Germany and have a Vodafone contract by the way.
All the best
GB
Nobody with an idea on this one?
Is there by chance an option where I can activate the SIM through entering my PIN number?
What should I do (install) to at least go back to the original firmware?
Thanks in advance.

No problem man. It's pretty hard to brick these phones, I've even seen someone flash a CDMA radio on a GSM but they still fixed it... not that I suggest doing that!

Not I'm aware of. HD2 is specifically for T-Mobile and ATT is on the different band. I'm sure the phone will work fine, but I don't think you will have the full features.
But flashing any ROM and changing the APN would work I guess.
Good luck
I have an unlocked HD2 and I'm using the ROM in my sig (it's a link) I'd recommend that one, it's just superb and the chap who updates it (Tyween) is really on the ball and releases a new version every so often so that the latest updates are always available.
It's not so much the ROM that'll dictate how well your carrier will work, but the radio. Have a look around, there may be one that works especially well with AT&T
Thank you I will copy the values you have in your signature
No worries I hope you have as much enjoyment out of it as I do

Can you tell me what your internet settings are?
Hi all,
........
..
.
There are so many ROMs available, and there are two options for an HD2, SD build and NAND Build; SD implies just copy paste on a the ROM on the SD card and you are done to boot. And NAND ones are a little hard to install but good on the long run

MMS and Mobile Data configuration settings were automatically downloaded to the phone when I plugged in my AT&T SIM.
It basically configured itself.

This may be a noob question but in order for me to use the HD2 on my ATT acct. Does the rom have to be an unlocked rom? Or do i have to mod a file(s) on the phone/sd card.

Nope, just install it and go. The phone does have to be sim unlocked in order to work on AT&T though. I have Rafdroid Froyo on my HD2 and it works great on AT&T.
OK i finally understood how to add nand android to the hd2 and i have tried 2 version niether of them recognize at&t as a network. I went to available settings under networks and and it gave me at&t as an option but when i selected it. the prompt Registering on at&t then it said unable to connect to this network at this time try again later
is there another setting i should be changing do i need to re enter my sim unlock code if so where do i do that

[Q] MB526 no signal

Hello,
after a succesfull rooting attempt on my motorola defy+, i seem to get next to zero signal. (root tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1595013&page=9)
Is there no single way to restore the phone to default, without all the rooting? i really regret messing with the system and i wanted it the same way i bought it.
Or atleast get a perfectly fine signal as i did before the flash.
My location is belgium, and i have no clue what baseband setting it would be or wich sbf file i need to fully restore :C
Match your base band to the network your using with this. I would have try central Europe first.
You probably had DFP231 so my best guess would be using this sbf.
Second guess will be using this one, all from here.
Thank you

I thank you allot for helping me find the right things. i reflashed everything back to stock.
However, Wich sbf file would be for belgium? it's western europe. these others work okay but the baseband doesn't seem to do well, my signal for 2g and 3g are very poor now. is there absolutely no way to fully restore back to this device's original stock? the one i bought in belgium?
and the marketplace keeps crashing on either of those SBF's.
on the phone box you should see the baseband you had when purchased, it will help if you check your carrier name and baseband.
Maybe you had the France retail version, being also a French speaking country.
If you using Mobistar than the frequency for 3G is 2100, which should work with the current sbf.
Try removing the sim card and back again. restarting once or twice. sometime it need relearning the network.
Look in setting, "About", "Status", you should see the signal strength. Good reception is in the scale 51-100dBm.
113dBm-No reception.
Here's a sticker on the box, i'm not sure wich says the baseband.
i appreciate your help.
It says your original sbf was setup to 900/2100 Wcdma and 850/900/188/1900 for GSM. Your current sbf should work just fine.
If it's not working then install the French sbf, Orange France is using the same as yours original sbf.

Indeed, Proximus use the same frequencies as Mobistar.
Go to settings, Wireless and Network, Mobile networks, Operator selection, Serch network. See if you can find Proximus. If you do, click on it.

Once again i thank you greatly. You have helped me out so well. I added 3 thanks to your account

I'm glad your phone is usable again but from what you did your phone apparently can't work on 2G.
I would have use that sbf and see how it's working, now that you can always go back to the current one.
Anyway, enjoy your Defy.
