storage error - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

can somebody help me please i followed everything step my step in the tutorial ..but when i flash i get the htc booting screen and it comes up with "storage error the card seems to have changed use the card that came with the phone"..
TRIED A HARD RESET several times but nothing changes i used a sandisk microsd card and i bought a sandisk microsdhc class 4 card will that work?.. do i have to reflash from the beginning again with the WM 6.5 or what do i do thanks.

It sounds as though your SDCARD is not compatible with WP7.
You could try taking the SDCARD out and flash without it.
When you get to 7392 do a reset from the Settings->About screen and put the SDCARD back in as it reboots.
If you still get a storage error it probably means your SDCARD is not compatible.

ok thanks for that i am using the new yuki rom...A few questions do i have to flash from the beginning again with the new sandisk class 4 microsdhc card i have will my hd2 take it. or do i just reflash from the magldr 1.13

Just finished installing that ROM myself, and had a few SD card issues.
I would try just removing the SD card, then re-flash the ROM from Magldr.
If you still have issues without the SD card, then go back to the beginning of the process and flash with original WM6.5 ROM and go from there.
I tried with a 32gb class 2 Sandisk card and had trouble. Your class 4 Sandisk might work, but then it might not. It's a lottery as to which cards work and which don't. There are threads about the best cards to try, but even then you have to hope to luck that it works for you.

Ok thanks for that i will try it out .. so have you got it up and running ..

Yes new ROM from Yuki/Xbox up and running - well worth installing!
I had a lot of problems with the installation, partly because I was unfamiliar with the process, and partly because my SD card was not compatible with WP7.
What threw me was that I have 2 SD cards, a 2Gb Sandisk and a new 32gb sandisk. The 2Gb card worked perfectly but the 32gb one gave me storage errors. The 32 gb sandisk worked fine with WM6.5 though.
So I spent a lot of time with the 32gb card flashing to mango, re-flashing, formatting etc... In the end I determined from this forum that the 32gb Sandisk card just wasn't liked by WP7.
As it happens, I couldn't get the ROM to install with the 2gb card in the device, got all kinds of odd errors and freezes (though I didn't get any storage errors). So I removed the card entirely, flashed up to 7392 then did a reset (via WP7 phone settings->about->Reset your phone (not vol up/vol down method) and inserted the 2gb SD card.
All went well from here and am enjoying the new ROM! It can take a fair bit of time to get it installed properly due to SD card problems and the complex install process. But stick with it, the new ROM is awesome!!!

Yes, took the card out before I installed the Yuki/Xbox ROM, put it back in after updating to 7392.

Good to hear

can't get pass 7403, just before the "big" update that's about 200MB
obviously without the card is impossible because storage space is to small (50MB)
with the card I get storage error, through CAB update version
or timeout through Zune, which tries to go directly to 7712
will try with a new 2GB card instead this 16GB. seems like there is no card problem concerning storage space (because the space is usable even if you installed without the card), but how Windows boots off it. Maybe there is not enough read/write or it needs to have some other type of partioning.

The same problem, got Trancsend 8gb sdhc card (damn it), flashing rom is OK, but while trying to update (even via Zune from 7004->7008) got loop reboot. After many tries ypdated to NoDo (with unplugged SD card from start), but after NoDo there is no possibility to update with unplugged SD card. Got "Storage card not working" message. Hard-reset (not from WP7 but from MAGLDR or VOL buts) even do not work. It is impossible to do reset from WP7 because no way to get to the settings->about screen Tried also 1GB card (not sdhc, but SD), the same thing. No way to update
Any ideas how to resolve this problem?

Based on my experiences I'd say that your card isn't compatible. You should be able to do a hard reset and WP7 should recognise your card if it's a good one.
Do you have a known good SD card you can try?

Double checked both cards. After Hard Reset, if there were no other problems, the WP7 recovers card and no more error
but the updates are not installed (update process from NoDo 7392 to 7403). After second restart it destroy SD Card structure and then WP7 loads with error, so the second part of 7392->7403 is aborted. Is there any way to prevent this bug?

[HD2 / WP7] SD card not detected?

I'm not sure if this is a common problem or not. There seem to be a lot of SD card issues, but the descriptions don't seem to apply to me.
I'm installing WP7 on the HD2, and everything works except that when I look in the available memory, it says there is 170MB (thereabouts) of storage space available when there is an SD card inserted. This card was present on the initial boot, and is the one that originally came with the HD2 - a SanDisk 2GB.
I don't have the restarting issues that others have seen, so I'm not sure if this is a symptom of the mysterious unsupported SD card issue?
hi,
Did you read this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912904
Partially, but I find most people there are having problems with constantly rebooting, or similar problems. I don't have these problems, just that the SD card isn't being used. I also have a wifi problem (always Searching) which I've read is SD card-related but I don't know if that because the SD card isn't being found and utilised, or that the card itself isn't supported.
Never mind. I tried another card (8GB SDHC, as opposed to the 2GB SD) and that picked it up straight away so it looks like it was just a case of the SD card being unsupported.
Hope this proves useful to others also.
What steps did u take when "trying another sd card" I have the 16 gig which i did NOT 1rst time boot with but did have interesting glitches i.e. wifi and reboots..
I tried Hard resetting with it in but to no avail. Hopefully there is still hope for my existing card as I am going to attempt a full 1rst install with it in but maybe you could post the steps you took when getting the new card to work
I powered off, inserted the new SD card, booted into MAGLDR and reinstalled Windows Phone 7. I believe the SD card has to be present on the first boot, so I reset may work, but I reinstalled just to be sure!
After installation and the first boot, the new SD card was recognised and used (as confirmed by checking 'About' in 'Settings'). Hope that helps.

"damaged sd card" message

Hi all.
I have a 16gb micro sd card class 2 (sandisk).
Yesterday the message "damaged sd card" came on my notification bar.
I tried to format the card but i got no luck. With every i use i got errors (gparted, windows native tool, ubuntu disk manager).
So i bought a 8gb micro sd card class 4 (maxell) for replacement.
Sadly my htc legend doesn't accept this card neither...same message.
This time i'm sure the card is ok...because it works fine on any PC/Device i tried (including my girlfriend's samsung spica).
At first i though i might got an usb brick...so tried
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
with no luck...then i tried flashing another rom (aliba's Cyanogen 6.1, SuperBler V4)...same behaviour.
with dispair I took my girlfriend's 2gb microsd (sandisk) and tried this time with success!!
So 2 gb sdcard works.
8 gb not.
what do you suggest, crappy new sd card? or my phone got problems with sdhc?
What's brought all the old devs back?!
I've never seen that kind of behavior before... Hmm...

errors bring us here!
I can add one more to the solving puzzle:
in recovery (S-OFF) i can mount the card but while coping/reading it gives me I/O errors and than i have to reboot recovery to let it read some more (till a next I/O error...)
!!!
I'm Experiencing the same proplem. Yesterday I got the same error message "Damage SD card" I cant go into clockwork recovery mode to format SD card, I get the E:faliled to open/Sdcard/update.zip(no such file or directory). Its a 4GB Sd card and Im running CyanogenMod-7.0.0.-RC0-Legend-Kang....

I'm waiting to try a different SDHC card. I think it's related to bad quality sdhc.
I was able to format the SD card via PC recoverywindows.bat...so far no problems but who knows maybe in a near future I will probably get the DAmage SD card message again.
I had the exact same thing myself a while back. Although it probably won't help you, I took it out and cleaned the contacts (no doubt superfluous but you have to try everything, right?) and put it back in (twice), and it worked. It's been running fine for months now

without trying to sound too cheeky, your card is compatible, try another one, there is no working list of cards, its blind luck

troubleshooting:
Majority of problem during update are caused by SDcard
try different model to be sure.
you can install without sd until build 7392 try if you have big problem.
then insert sd and hardreset.
Do hard reset after all update if you have freeze or any problem
(When Magldr show WPH LOAD 12345 GO GO GO Press Vol+ & Vol- then after the new screen press VOL- twice.)
NOT all SD Cards are compatible with WP7.
If your card isn't compatible with WP7, it won't be used for data storage &
it may cause random reboots, freeze & update error.
It very recommended to use SDHC 2Go minimum.
Use a good quality SDcard for best performance .
Some SDcards are not compatibles but very few, for other the microsoft drivers are not good in versions before 7392
So if you have any problems with SDcard after first 7004 flash (boot in loop) or can't upgrade 7008 do this:
- Flash the rom without SDcard
Or if you have already flashed remove it and do a factory reset
- After system loaded, update to 7392 without SD card
- After booting succesfully 7392 go in settings/about and reset the phone
- When phone reboot insert your SDcard
- You will load system and the SDcard should works well now
- Continue to update to 7720 but this time with SDcard

GREAT tips... i started w 7004 with card in.. after reset it goes continous load indicates my 4GB class4 is not recognised.
Reflash with XBMod 7392 without card and all went well. Reset the phone, while started to boot i insert the other 8GB Class2 card and it works!! Now my ext storage is at 7GB!!
Going for MANGO w the card in and see how it goes....

[Q] Nook wont recognize my SD card

I have a 16GB SD card that I am trying to use in my Nook and for some reason when I go to storage the card is not showing up. When I reboot the Nook I see the SD card come up in the bottom left hand corner for a second and then it is gone. Does it need to be formatted to work in the Nook?
The question implies that the card is not formatted. Yes. It needs to be formatted to work at all. What brand is it?
The card is a Sandisk, should I format it with any certain format? If I put the card in my computer I can put stuff in it no problem but the Nook is not seeing it for some reason.

You were the one asking about your SD installed system and having problems and wanted to upgrade to a sandisk. So now you have your new card and you are having problems. You need to tell us more about what you are trying to do. Are you having trouble after you have burned a new SD image to it, or are you having trouble seeing the virgin card when booting to whatever system you have on emmc? Which is what system by the way? Stock or CM or something else?

Ok I originally put CM7 on a older 16gb SD card so I could boot from the card but I found the performance to be slow. I then decided to wipe the Nook and start over but this time I installed CM7 right to the Nook instead of on the SD card. So now CM7 is running on my Nook as the only ROM. I then took that original 16gb card and wiped and formatted it so it was blank and decided to use it for extra storage on the Nook. The problem I am having is the Nook cannot read the card. When I put the card in my computer it shows it as a blank removable drive so I am a little stumped as to why the Nook won't read it.

And you wiped and formatted with your PC which is running Windows? Which version?
You really should format it with the Nook, but if it is not seeing the card, I'm not sure it can do it. Go to storage and see if you can. If not try formatting on your PC with a card formatting program (from sandisk which I think you can get on the web) or another PC.
Since your original card was already sandisk and you were having trouble running the SD install on it, I suspect something is wrong with it. It may be defective. But maybe the formatting software from sandisk can revive it.

I assume the nook is finding the card, since it looks like the mounting notification occurs. What does it say in the storage settings exactly? No sdcard or the wrong storage space?
If the sdcard install was working, even if you found it slow, then mounting the card doesn't sound like the issue. You can format the card in CWM if you believe that the formatting is wrong.
If it says the wrong amount of storage, you may have checked the swap emmc/sdcard option.
Did you format the card as FAT32 or ntfs? It needs to be FAT32.

When you insert the uSD in the PC, how much of storage does PC recognize? all 16GB?
Either way, try to format it with MiniTool Wizard
Ok It looks like it is only showing 14.9GB. I tried formatting it in Mini Tool and this is what I have after.

I just remembered some problems I was having a while back trying to make a larger boot image for the agnostic SD installer. If the partition image was not just right the nook would not see it. It has to do with how the Master Boot Record (MBR) was written to the card. I think if you restart with mini-tool and create a whole new partition, it may revive the card. That empty space before the partition looks fishy to me.

Also... if you're using a computer's internal card reader it may cause you problems... try an el cheapo USB card reader/writer.

No SD Card detected however .. (please help)

Hi,
(Strange problem - OS does not detect SD Card however Bootloader does and loads ROM from SD Card)
I have a strange problem from this morning. I had WP7 mango installed which was working pretty ok apart from a few restarts if the bottom part of phone got warm/hot, so I kept it in from of AC (This idea usually works with HD2)
This morning, WP7 gave an error saying it can not detect the 16 GIG SD Card, I reformatted SD Card using Nokia phone/FAT32 and re-installed WP7 however it gave a message saying No Storage Card present.
I have also tried installing WM6.5 but that too doesnt not detect SD Card.
On top of above, strange thing is that I have installed 3 different version on WM6.5 stock ROM using SD Card method (pressing VolDn methos while powering phone up to boot load ROM from SD Card) and it works perfectly fine however the OS does not detect SD Card.
Has any body faced this problem and have a solution?
Or does any body know of a solution to this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Ash.

We're all too surprised you managed to flash using a 16gb SD card.,,, normally anything 8gb or larger won't flash nbh files, so your problem is pretty strange.
I lost the shipped 8GB SD card more than year back and since then I am using 16GB SD card with HD2 and it worked perfectly.
Does OS like WP7/WM6.5 uses mount in some way to have card and contents available? If so, can it be mounted using MAGLDR or CWM, since the bootloader which IPL can read the SD Card.
Cheers,
Ash
indeed this is a baffling problem. can't think of conclusive reasons why the tri-color bootloader can see the sd card but OS (WM6.5, WP7, Android) cannot!
i am assuming you have just ONE partition on the sd card...? can you check and tell us the format of the filesystem, i.e. FAT or FAT32...? i think FAT isn't even possible on a 16GB card...it will likely be formatted as FAT32, but lets check to be sure.
Hi ASCIIker,
Many thanks for your response, the SD Card is FAT32 formatted. I have tried both 4gb and 16gb cards but WM6.5 says No Card found.
See screen shots attached. I have also attached screen shot of version showing Stock ROM flashed earlier today using SD Card.
I am not too sure, could it be some thing like mounting of SD Card under these OS's or under SPL which is not able to mount these SD Cards,
The problem started when phone was running WP7 Mango 8107 but it used to crash if it got hot and re-boot on its own, may e one of those automatic re-boots, the OS unmounted Sd card. When I looked at it in the morning, it was showing an error message of no storage card present and the options available were emergency call and shut down. I tried re-booting it 1-2 times and it still showed same message and then I tried loading WM6.5 from SD Card using LEOIMG.nbh which worked and left me confused.
I have also tried USB Mass Storage option of MAGLDR 1.13 however that doesn't work either.
I have never used CLk but I can try that if there is a way to access SD Card using USB with it.
Any suggestions for reviving it back are welcome.
Cheers,
Ash

It is worth a shot but i suspect you it still will not detect the SD card. Just click on the HD2 guide in my sig and scroll down to post #3 and look for the section "Updated version of clk with CWM built in" and click on the link that takes you to the download of that version. Then the bottom of post #1 and read the section "Flashing cLK via SD card". This will have clk with Clockwork Mod installed on your device. Then boot your device and hold down the home button at the same time, this will boot you into CWM and theb select "Mounts and storage" then select"mount USB storage". If you do not see the contents of your SD card on your computer then it is not working. Make sure to try "install zip from sdcard" as well. Just see if it reads the SD card that way.
Also I take it from your posts that you have tried otion #4 USB Mass storage in MAGLDR. So like I said I doubt CWM will see it in mass storage either.
Seeing as WP7 uses the SD card for the internal memory and is constantly using the SD card reader on the device at high speeds. It may just be a case of the SD card reader not being operable with the OS anymore. I mean it has to work at a certain speed level I think for the OS to be able to use it, and maybe the bootloader does not require that same speed. Or it may just be a case of the reader not being able to mount the SD card as read and write both still so it just will not mount it. Like I said these are just shots in the dark. But if it is a problem with it mounting in either read or write it could cause this problem I beleive.
Hi T-Macgnolia, thank you for this detailed reply. I was able to install CLK using SD Card method however it does not recognize SD Card nor does it mount it. It shows an error message - see attached screen shot.
I was wondering if a faster SD Card like Class 6 8 GB would make any difference to current state.
Cheers,
Ash

if you're getting the same behaviour with all your cards, then its likely to be a problem with the phone, and messing with this class of that sized card is probably a dead end. (thats not to say you shouldnt try if you have cards available, of course!)
To my mind its gotta be one of two things
1 - some problem with the sd controller, that is allowing low level access to the card, so flashing works, but not allowing the higher level drivers full speed access to the card, in much the same way that a PC accesses the hard disk much faster during a normal boot than it does with a 'safe mode' boot.
2 - a virus/glitch/witchcraft/wp7/other has corrupted all your sd cards in some fashion.
Just guesses, of course.
Good luck.

I agree with Samsamuel completely, it seemsit is something wrong with the SD card reader/controller that is not letting it read the SD card at a higher speed. Or something really strange and funky has happened to all of your SD cards. But I feel it is the first thing and not the later. If you want to try another SD card, as odd as it sounds, I suggest you try a lower class SD card like a class 2 if you can find on. But then again you may already have one and already tried it I do not know. One thing for sure it seems like a hardware issue and not a software or faulty SD card issue.
I had this exact same problem, in the end I ended up going back to original leo Winmo 6.5, then starting over with HSPL - Magldr - CWM - Android (though I guess WP7 will work too).
I don't know what caused the problem, I just put all these anomalies down to the bad nand blocks on my device.
I'll also note that mass storage in Magldr has never worked for me and still doesn't, the drive mounts but crashes on transfer of any files, but within CWM and Android it works now.
If you have exhausted all other options and have not already tried this then it maybe worth a shot. Good luck.
Thanks michael-jb,
I have tried all these options. I have tried installing different WP7 again though, which I will do tomorrow or day after.
Cheers,
Ash
