Now this is a handy wee app!
Check this out. Before installing this app get your hands on taskxp from the market (don't set it as your default launcher make your default what is already was). Reboot your device then click taskxp to check what apps have started (a lot!), also see the amount off free ram you have. But the app below actually works
Download the app from the link below. Disable user apps, and whatever system apps are starting (compare/check with taskxp). Reboot then check what apps have started, nice eh?
It took me just a couple of reboots to get it set up nice.
Note, stay away from installed apps all that does is uninstall.
Try it out, post here what you think.

Is there anyway to keep progrms from auto starting?

I was wondering if there is a way to keep all of these damn stock programs from auto starting and running in the background? I downloaded Advance task killer and I always seem tons of crap running I did not start.
Would the only fix be to flash a new ROM on it?
I dont mess too much with task killers, but I believe some can autokill apps that you specify when they start running. You can also remove apps completely via command line if you don't use them at all.
autostarts. it's .99 in the market.
Alright. But nothing free huh? haha. Even after I kill it, some of the programs will still start up in an hour or so.

are the programs that keep popping up necessary?
If not, remove via command line or be willing to taskkill it, if it bothers you.
also, autostarts has different environment variables (start up, connection changed, usb plugged in, etc.) to specify when to kill what apps (I'm not pimpin it, I'm just sayin its a good program)
Oh. Maybe I'll get it, I mean its only 99 cents I have to figure out how to buy apps. Thanks though.

Some applications are SUPPOSED to be running all the time. Others the phone starts up so that their response time is better.
Arbitrarily killing applications is a sure-fire way to crash the phone. If you can be bothered to provide a list of what you see, someone can advise you what to leave alone.

I use Advanced Task Killer (free version) and works pretty well on my phone. Some people say not to use one but have yet to see any evidence of why not to other than peoples opinions, so it's up to you whether or not you want to use one.

Mine works much better without task killers. No lags at all... And i tried many of them. It´s just my opinion, dude. You can find many threads about this to get your own: to use or not task killers.

edit: And I use ADW (last update) and 026 firm non rooted. No task killer. No startup manager. And everything is just fine.

I don't feel like writing out the full reason for why not to use a task killer.
Luckily for me, this link explains it nicely.
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
Once you give it a read, you can google around and you will find other sources which give you the same info in a bit more detail.
As for the widget problem? I have yet to experience it unless I am changing a setting on ADW (pretty much any changed setting under ADW settings will result in my widgets reloading). However, I never experience it other than that. I imagine the task killer is your problem.
Good luck!
Again, it is an opinion, but without ATK, I would not be able to fully use ADW. You can explain the logic about why one should or should not use a task killer. My own personal experience shows that my battery and phone performs better with the free version of ATK.
[Note: the link to the geekfor.me as posted by ^^ says that Android automatically kills tasks when more memory is needed. NOT true with the X10. That is why the phone re-starts from time to time. SE's own support site list this as an issue. Once I have started using ATK, my phone does not re-starts by itself anymore].

"Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when it’s done doing what it needs to do."
So why then does it leave tasks running when you close them, for example, if I use Meridian then close it, the app will still show in the ATK list, and remains there until I shut it down. When you boot the phone, it loads a few apps, that would remain there unless I use ATK. The first reply to the article sums up the experience of a lot of users.

Mine has never re-started itself without task killer.
I use Advanced Task Manager since I started using X10 with ADW Launcher. It was all fine at the begining. Then I reinstalled software and restored aplications (without settings) and started experience the same problem as OP. So I have changed some settings in ADW, especially paying attention to System Preferences and UI settings. I don't know excatly what I have changed but I do NOT experience any problems with ADW "restarting" after that. So in my opinion this problem is down to setting ADW properly, only.
My ADW was experiencing that as well and I enabled ADW Settings > System Preferences > System persistent
This seemed to fix it for me.
ATK and similar apps are a personal choice, I used ATK until late June but since uninstalled the phone had run smoother. But then, it's rooted and overclocked...
ADW is probably the best home, openhome and panda have issues and xxx too crashes too often

System Killing Launcher on every app launch!!

Hi!! I have a problem, I'm currently Running Darky's 10.1 with dark core 2.6... Everything is smooth and snappy, however the system keeps killing my launcher everytime I launch an application whether it be a game, browser, news app... Whenever I exit the app the launcher reloads and it makes the phone really really slow and laggy for 10-15 seconds...
I currently using ZEAM launcher, not sure whats causing this, i've been using this launcher since its launch and only had this problem when i was on stock froyo...
Any ideas what can be done to fix this issue...
Thanks!!
Same problem here.
I am on GigerReal 7.1.3 and the worse thing is when it you try to make a phone call and the bloody thing just restarts the phone every third key pressed.
I can only call using voice calling when this happens...
I am using LauncherPro but it also happens in Ginger Launcher and TW Launcher 4.5
Just out of interest guys, how much free memory is showing for you in Settings > Applications > Running Services ?
I am running stock JVQ and although the phone works fine after initial boot (with around 180mb free) this number seems to drop over time and results in any new application clearing any other app from the memory. This even meant that if I got a text message while using the web browser and replied to it, by the time I went to return to the browser it had to reload where I was from scratch. It was also clear that after playing a game and returning to the home screen, even this was having to reload and "redraw" again.
That in itself is a minor annoyance but eventually it seemed to get so bogged down the whole system froze with the "black screen of death" and I had to do a forced reboot. I'm aware, of course, that JVQ is not an official release so it's not fair to be too harsh on Samsung here...
I seem to have a lot of memory free. It happens after the phone has been up for some time.
I noticed that launcher pro was reloading the widgets every time it starts. Also i seem to notice that it happens when you dial a couple of numbers and it starts giving you suggestions from the contacts. So it could be contact related?

This is the same that happens on my system... The launcher just reloads all the widgets everytime I close an application... the amount of ram is always close to 243/337.. So its close to 90-100 mb free, which is enough i suppose... Still the launcher just reloads everytime an app is closed... Its really getting annoying...
basicly you must set HOME_APP_ADJ to 0 making home app unkillable =)
am not sure but probably do that
/data/local.prop -> add such line ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0
and restart - have not tested just pure theory (the .prop location)

Actually, putting the value as 1 worked better for me. My launcher so far has not been killed even once.
ya 1 should work flawlesly
0 is making it bulletproof/unkillable at any state
but 1 should be safest value
I think Spare Parts allows you to adjust the task killer's sensitivity. Maybe have a play with that and relax the settings.

Attached is an APK which adds that line. Make sure you're rooted first. I wrote it in the past 10 minutes, so it's very simple and might crash, but it did work for me.
Just install it, launch it, confirm root and then watch out for a small message. If successful it will directly ask you to uninstall it. Reboot, and done.
there is also ro.HOME_APP_MEM that can be changed to 4096
to follow other oom_adj=1 settings =)

Try changing the lowmemoty killer setting to something less aggressive. Your phone is trying to keep too much free memory so has to kill off apps.
Download Galaxy Tuner (using memory manaber option)and set the application cache values to the new samsung default as follows:-
fa=10 MB
va=16 MB
ss=20 MB
ha=24 MB
cp=28 MB
ea=32 MB
Make a note of your current settings in case it doesnt help.
You can also use Galaxy Tuner to set JEWE's file system cache
, settings are:-
SWP: 50
VCP: 10
DEC: 5
DWC: 10
DRA: 90
DBR: 5
These work well for me so give them a whirl, you can always put the values back to where they are now.
mate the problem is solved already - please read dont spam those juwe crappy values ok ?

Increasing app priority

Hello everyone.
I tried to use search to see if there's already been such a question, but came up empty.
I often use the stopwatch app on my Galaxy S, but the problem is, as soon as I open an app or two, the Android system kills the stopwatch process to free memory for new apps (my guess), eventhough stopwatch is still running. It happens regardless of how I exit the stopwatch, via the home button, back button, hold home and select an other app...
Is there a way to somehow increase the priority of the clock app so that the system doesn't kill it whenever it wants?
I use DarkyROM 10.3 based on JVR, but this is happening on any Gingerbread ROM I use, I tried several different kernels (currently using Semaphore 1.6.0bm BigMem version).
say thanks to all mem scripts that was used in your tkeme/rom/kernel =)

you cant make it bulletproof just like that you could try making whole group of apps bulletproof but that would make system unstable

I remember seeing an app that could do what I wanted though it couldn't save the settings.
Since I installed Semaphore 1.6.0 bigmem it all looks a bit better, will have to test it more extensively though.
yup think there is some app that can prevent app from killing, cant help tho gl
Go Launcher has the ability to "lock" an app, which prevents it from being killed. Not aware of an app that does the same.

It's not a virus. You probably installed an app that changed the settings for your search.
Open your search, then select the "settings" in the upper right corner. You can adjust your defaults search settings from there. Also might just see the app that changed it as well
Sorry. I thought the "A" in A500 indicated an Android tablet. It is Android, not Windows.
Funny...the concept of buying a Windows tablet is so unthinkable to me that it never occurred to me to consider that someone would think it was other than Android. LOL

Another thing you might try if you see some strange apps suddenly appear, or you get strange notifications, is go to the Market and install an "air push detector" app. Not neccessary to run it all the time, but on occassion.
Thanks for the tip! I will do that now. Still haven't found the offending app. Nasty little buggers.

Sent from my A501 using Alexandra III
Yep...have done that. Thanks!
My Comment is late in this thread.. And im sure you have it resolved..
But here is what i do to catch crap..
go to the market get advanced task manager app. Its tiny app and can be turned off to not Run in the background.. Once you do that it will not take up cpu or memory .
once in a while start it up and look at the apps that are running in the background. In the apps settings you can tell it to auto kill certain apps. This feature can be good to trouble shoot and find apps that have evil programming attached to it.
I will add be careful what you kill with it. If you open a app like the above and keep killing or set apps that you DO USE to be killed you will be fighting the built in management in android. IF Apps are in there that you know your running.If those apps you are sure is not the issue . DO NOT KILL Them they are just setting static for the most part. Killing them will cause cpu spikes as they will just come right back . Use the above mentioned app ONLY AS A TOOL To find rogue apps. not as memory manager app. Android does a great job with doing that if the apps will play by the rules..
Just wanted to add this to the other GREAT Replies you received in this thread. I believe most of the others who have applied use this or a similar app to week at ROGUE APPS.
Good Luck..
Thanks erica_renee...I'll take a look at it. If it's too complicated though, I probably won't be able to figure out how to use it. LOL Many of these apps have no instructions. The devs assume we all know how to figure them out. Not so true. I see "reviews" all the time from people asking how to use these things.
