Guys, i was about to give up on my service provider (3 hutchinson) content, until i learned this:
The pack uses a few of the current 3content providers such as Scoreboard, Sports Tonight, Fox, and adds the SBS Live TV streaming which will be released close to the opening of the World Cup.
Not everyone would be up streaming live TV considering the live games would be between 11pm 7am AEST, so the exclusive video highlights would cater those who can watch them the following day.

And so i need a few things:
1. I need to somehow make my lovely universal, appear to be one of the "approved" 3 phones, so that, it doesn't just kick me out, like it does at the moment, when i try to access certain services, and say "your device is currently not supported".
2. I need to be able to stream RTSP from within Internet explorer. I've tried downloading Real media mobile and all that.. but can't get it to budge. This is needed!!!
Please guys, any advice, i'm willing to try, because with work and the time difference, some games are going to be extremely hard to watch, and this service, that 3 will offer, just sounds incredible, and i can't bare to think, that my new super phone, which is flat out amazing in everything, except it's not offical approved by 3. 1. Has been solved. My phone is able to connect to all 3 services now, with no problems, since using Opera 8.6 mobile. For some stupid reason, i was using mini (the java version) and it was giving me a very hard time. The mobile version is much better and works a treat.
However, i still can not work out, how to stream RTSP files to save my life.... anyone please!!!
I may start a new thread tomorrow, based purely on RTSP streaming, as i think it's a fairly important issue, and in it's own thread may gather more attention..

Today at the Google IO keynote, Google announced the new features that Android 2.2 code named "Froyo" will introduce. Android 2.2 will be available via update for the super popular HTC EVO 4G phone this July.
One of the many improvements that Android 2.2 will bring is better performance when running applications. They have made improvements to how applications are compiled that allows apps to run more efficiently, which ultimately allows the applications to run faster and smoother than ever before. Android's web browser Chrome, has also been improved with a 2-3x javascript performance boost using the V8 engine which allows web apps to load a lot faster with Android 2.2. During the live demonstration using Sun's standard Spider javascript test, Chrome on Android 2.2 out performed the same phone running Android 2.1 and even outperformed the Apple iPad running Safari!
Google also announced that Android 2.2 will improve the Chrome browser by adding better HTML 5 support which will allow the browser to utilize features of the phone that were never possible in previous Android OS versions. These new features include the ability for the browser to utilize the phone's accelerometer in web based apps such as Google Maps to change the viewing angle instead of having to use on-screen controls. They also demonstrated how HTML 5 will allow you to use the phone's camera in web-based apps such as Google Buzz to take a picture and share it right from your web-browser! To top it off, Android 2.2 will be the first mobile operating system that will have native flash support. With Android 2.2, the Chrome web browser will have full Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support to allow you to view flash-based websites, play flash games, and more! This is something that not even the iPhone is capable of doing!
While many smartphones already support push notifications to receive email, instant messages, and other notifications instantly. Google is taking this idea to a whole new level with their Cloud to Device messaging API. This new feature allows users to send commands to their Android device to launch applications, perform tasks, and much more. For example, if a user is viewing Google Maps on his desktop computer, with one-click in his desktop browser, the phone will automatically launch Google Maps and open up to the same location that was being viewed on the desktop browser. This is going to be really useful for users who need to quickly switch from their desktop/laptop environment to their phone in a moments notice!
One of the most exciting features for our readers is that Android 2.2 will add a feature that turns your Android device into a portable hotspot. This feature will create a WiFi network that provides internet connectivity for up to 8 WiFi-capable devices using the 3G or 4G mobile networks. While Google didn't say if this will require an additional monthly fee for a tethering plan, we suspect that this feature will require the tethering plan on your phone which is usually an additional $30/month.

If you are currently an Android user, you know how great Google's voice search is for searching the web using your own voice. While their voice search feature is already very good, they demonstrated that voice recognition has improved since Android 2.1 as well as a new feature that uses Google Voice called "intentions". "Intentions" is designed to work like a personal assistant, if you say "Call Fifth Floor Restaurant" it will search for the restaurant based on your GPS location, find the phone number for this restaurant, and automatically place the call for you. In Android 2.2 Google Voice also will have a voice translation feature that will translate and speak almost anything you say into another language. This is going to be a must have feature for anyone who travels frequently!
There are also going to be several updates the the Android Market Place including:
Automatic Updates - The ability to have all of your applications automatically update when new versions are available, instead of having to choose to manually update each application.
Google's Auto-Fill Search - Uses Google's Auto-fill search to guess at what you are trying to search for as you begin to type in your search keywords, just as you see on Google's web search.
Search within application data - Now allows you to search within application data such as financial documents, office documents, spreadsheets etc, so that you can find your personal information more quickly and efficiently!
Install/Move Apps to SD Card - With Android 2.2 you can move large applications to the SD card to free up internal memory, and you can even configure Android 2.2 to automatically install large apps to the SD card when internal memory is low.
Desktop Android Marketplace - You will now be able to access the Android marketplace via your desktop on your web-browser. From the desktop version of the marketplace you can view your Android devices, which apps you already have installed, and purchase applications. If you have an Android 2.2 device, when you purchase apps from your desktop, they will be automatically pushed & downloaded to your Android 2.2 device via 3G/4G connectivity without having to tether via USB to sync the application to your phone!
Google also announced a new feature to Android 2.2 that will allow users to access and stream their entire music library from their desktop computer or media center device to their Android device via WiFi, 3G, or 4G! Google has partnered with Sprint & HTC to provide the new HTC EVO 4G to all the developers who attended the Google IO conference. Google said the HTC EVO 4G will provide consumers with the best Android experience possible with it's 4.3in screen, 8mp camera, HDMI output, and most of all the first phone to use 4G technology to provide speeds up to 10mbit/sec!

I doubt it will be in july, froyo may one out publicly and be pushed to the N1 in july but not to the evo, because of sense UI.
I would agree with July as some have mentioned that it might be released wth Froyo 2.2 on June 4th. Since that timeline is very near a July push is more than welcomed news. It's kind of like having a 1.5Ghz processor now instead of 1.00Ghz I think the improvement is going to be spectacular.

Ummmm, "second half of the year" can be July, or it can be December. It doesn't mention anywhere that it's going to be July.
Judging by past HTC updates, I highly doubt it will be in July. And if HTC does get it, you can be sure Verizon/Sprint etc will be taking it before it goes OTA and disabling the built-in tether, delaying it even longer.

2.2 should run fantastic on the Evo hardware. Doubt the update will be allowed OTA on Sprint as soon as it's available from Google, if history is any teacher.
Hopefully WP7 takes a lesson from both Android and iPhone: regular OS updates that enhance functionality on a MOBILE platform.
Either way, whenever the update gets pushed down, it will be a good thing.
Well i doubt we will get the update in july, but engadget said HTC released a statement saying most 2010 phones will get the update. So n1, Desire, Incredible, and the Evo. Most phones by htc in 2010 have ran sense UI so i dont think that will be as big a problem now to get the update, not as much as Sprint pushing it to the Evo will be with the built in teether. engadget.com/2010/05/21/htc-most-phones-launched-in-2010-will-get-android-2-2/
I think the EVO will get priority from HTC since it is essentially their "flagship" device.

Let's say there's a two or three month delay between Evo release and 2.2 availability - will 2.2 break ROM's created since the 6/4 release? Or any other apps?

Technically it should be pretty soon.
I believe the reason it took so long for the Hero to get 2.1 is because it was coming from 1.5 or 1.6 (I don't remember). Since HTC already has 2.1 running with Sense, upgrading to 2.2 with Sense shouldn't be all that difficult considering the bulk of changes are under the hood and have no changes made to the UI itself.
I wonder...what makes Android upgrades more difficult: changes in UI, or under the hood? Any developers out there that can chime in on this?
I think the major problem here is the carrier. I'm sure OS upgrades have to pass some internal control on the carrier, which explains why Nexus One users get updates immediately.
Nexus One got it so quickly due to the fact it didn't have sense UI. Like a computer getting upgraded windows or MAC or Linux, its easy to upgrade the OS but when you have UI its more difficult to keep everything working properly. And it would be a stupid move for HTC to not have this ready for Tue EVO 4g a few weeks, NO days after its released on the N1 !

I believe the UI is the biggest problem. Look at CLIQ or Hero or xperia's phone. Also coming from 1.5 Sense to 2.1 Sense is probably a lot more work coming from 2.1 Sense to 2.2 Sense.
HTC offers the updates on their site I believe, not sure if it has anything to do with the carrier.
This one might, as 2.2 enables tethering and hot-spot capabilities. I'm sure carriers will have something to say about that - they have so far.
2.2 isn't as huge an upgrade from 2.1 as it was from 1.5 to 2.1. 2.2 Should be out a lot quicker, as i doubt sense will have to be updated that much
Devs - I have been following the android development here on and off. I feel I've had enough of WM 6.5 and want to jump over to android. I have been doing lots of reading lately, but am not getting answers to few questions - Please let me know if android supports the following, I'm continuing my research as well
1) Exchange support: My office e-mail is also synced to my HD2. Does Android allow this?
2) Geo-tagging of pictures
3) Do we have any equivalent of Microsoft myphone? It feels good to have all data backed up to the cloud each night.
4) Twitter / Facebook - no worries here. official apps available
5) Compatibilty with MS Office apps? Can we view/edit excel, ppt's and word docs?
6) RSS feed readers? I use the one that comes with Sense
7) Facebook / Contacts integration
8) What is the best way of exporting PIM data (appointments, messages, contacts) from WM and importing it into Android?
9) Do we have complete media support? I have a good collection of songs and movies on my phone now. Also, does android support hardware acceleration for movies like the HTC photos app does?
10) Does GPS and the digital compass work? does the Google maps app on Android make use of the GPS receiver?

I have just installed my first android rom and I don't think you are going to get all you are hoping for. Most things work, depending on which build you go for but as I found you only have about half the functionality you get from WM6.5 - not because of the operating system, android is very slick and pretty, but it's the software you've accumulated over the years that makes the difference.
I think if I spent a few weeks accumulating all the apps then things might get close but android feels a little restrictive after so many years using WM.
You are best off trying it, it will run alongside WM with a little effort.
Upgrading to another ROM & radio is your first step, I'm using the latest stock 3.14 with no problem. Format a fresh SD card and start to load it, make sure all your WM apps are shut as windows exits very fast.
I have to say that the browser in android is the best I have ever seen on any device, flash works, videos play, browsing is almost the same as a desktop - it makes WM look it's age.

2. I've never really used it on Darkstone's FroyoStone, but it's part of the settings in the camera, and it activates the GPS.. So I guess so.
3. I use Gmail. It syncs mail, contacts and calendar. Really haven't searched for anything else, since I used gmail in WinMo.
4. You said it, man.
5. No idea.
6. Plenty on the market, and lots of them are free.
7. Works like a charm, and imho better than WinMo.
8. Again, I used Gmail. It doesn't export messages, but that didn't bother me.

10. Yes. I'm having a feeling that sometimes my digital compass is acting a little weird, but I'm not sure. Maybe its my sense of orientation thats a little weird
I must say that I feel the exact opposite of boomboomer, android doesnt feel the slightest restrictive to me. The android OS as a whole took a couple of days to get used to, but the plethora of possibilities available just in the android market seems just awesome to me. I spend two days on finding the equivalent WinMo apps on the android market, and stumbled upon a lot more awesome apps in the process. (Even found my beloved Chuck Norris app!
But I do agree on the browser. It really is lightning fast!
You can use Sprite Migrate to move contacts and anything else from WM to Android. Ill post the steps later is necessary but you should be able to just Google it.

Okay. I've made the jump. Installed the stock 3.14 ROM followed by the darkstone froyo build. Everything's good so far, still setting up everything ....

Don't hesitate to post your feelings about it when you get used to android... I loved wm, but use android on my hd2 for months and honestly I can't go back.
My first tips are:
don't use a task killer it will be counter productive
Use an alternative home, launcher pro is highly recommended
For a business use, calendar widgets like pure calendar and pure grid calendar are very readable and customizable
Titanium backup is able to backup all your programs and their data on your sd card. You can after upload them in a dropbox account. Indispensable in case you have a problem or want to change build
For editing office files, the best I found is documents to go. Give it a try its great.
The only drawback I found is that you can't sync your notes with onenote. There are some great apps for notes that can sync to cloud like catch but I prefer use a simple text document with the powerful search features of the file editor Astro.
Oh for playing videos rockplayer is free, and play all kind of videos without a glitch, even with subtitles if you want.

I've started to encounter the data corruption issue...missing files some of them appear in the "lost. dir" folder.
Another issue is with the data connection...it drops intermittently ans I have to switch on the airplane mode and then turn it off to restore the connection.
Any thoughts?
Overall, it has been a fabulous experience. It would be wonderful if HTC released an official rom for the hd2

So after all the hype, the troubles getting an activation code, and then installing WP7 on my HD2, I sit here waiting for my Android DesireHD Nand build to finish re-installing on my device.
I thank the community so much, as I was so obsessed with getting WP7 (i've been a fan of Microsoft's os since my dell axim days) that I was even planning on upgrading my contract early just to get an HD7.
But the truth is.. in which way is this better than WM 6.5?? After two minutes in on this OS i sat there thinking to myself: "Really!!??" Oh wait this is how the dude who made the new Windows Phone commercial got the idea...

It just depends on what you want to get out of it.
Android may work better for your needs now, WP7 with a bit of development may work for you better in the future.
I tried android for a few months a while back (the SD card builds) and liked it initially but then I found it couldn't do everything I wanted in 6.5. The lack of an equivilant to Softmaker was important.
Granted WP7 cant do anywhere near what 6.5 could (lacking of decent office apps like softmaker) but it does what it does very well. Right now i'm enjoying the ride - It reminds me when I first started palying around with my SPV C500
i had very poor expectations, im a heavy WM6.5 user and i ran Android of SD as a general intrest but since ive got WP7 ive found myself thinking, you know what, it works, it works well, its quick and i dont have this urge to mod the crap out of it.
The only thing WP7 on HD2 lacks is a decent camera app.
Above that, i suppose there is a couple of programs i need from WM which is a real pain, i really think that WP7 needs some kind of advanced mode, every day joe via the carriers wouldnt need it but a hidden setting could open it up for us, that way MS keeps its image, its identity to the world and we get that wee bit more freedom we all want, that setting would apply to business users that may need more access, and again, by checking that option MS removes all responsibility from anything that goes wrong, everyone wins!
Most people just want a phone that just works and it is easy to work with. And I think WP7 is very easy to use, and will appeal to the masses.
Need to say more??? wp7 is easy to use, user frienldy and....AWESOME...
I also love Android because you can customize it, many apps and more! But there is something with wp7 that makes me horny!
Just stick around with WP7 and i think it wont dissapoint you!
i have to agree with most of the positive comments here ... i only tried wp7 out of curiosity and just because our beloved hd2 can!! i was pleasantly surprised at the speed and usability. i love the nice clean interface especially the mail client. sure it lacks a lot of apps at the moment but surprisingly i the angry birds withdrawal symptom went away faster than i expected and i'm finding it hard to go back to android even though i do have it on as dual boot.
Actually the only things I really miss from WM6.5/Android are:
1. Choice of browsers. IE Mobile is fine but some sites are not dispaying properly. Opera usually fixes this in WM6.5 and Android.
2. Some sort of Skype, but I guess this is coming soon to WP7 anyway.
3. Ability to attach any sort of file to e-mails. I'm still to figure out how I can attach and send a PDF i downloaded through the browser
Other than that WP7 has many pluses:
1. Excellent e-mail client. By far the best out there on ANY smartphone.
2. Best Office experience out there.
3. Mind blowing games
4. Very neat and clean interface.
5. It's fast and furious.

Yeah I agree with most of this.
WP7 is slick, and i really like the basic functions.
WP7
+dialer/txt/email
+Zune
+presentation
-slow to load apps
-hardly any apps and the price of apps is high (no skype, no Nav, no flash, no XDA)
-having to reload apps, (no multitasking)
-browser isn't recognised as mobile a lot of the time
- that tile list is going to get very long once more apps come
Agreed. Nice, clean and simple. Reminds us that it doesn't always have to be about 300 different (mostly unnecessary) apps and all the other bells and whistles but a nice simple and effective interface. Wasn't too sure about it at first but it's definitely growing on me!

Is there any solution that's working for WiFi tethering? Is there a multi-client IM app? I also would prefer that there was a better way than through the browser to access gmail and google voice, but I doubt we'll ever see a native app for either of those.
I may load it when I have a couple of days to play just for general interest though.
You don't need a "native" Gmail client. Outlook handles Gmail more than fine and delivers it as push mail if you wish so. WP7 syncs also with Google Calender and GMail Contacts, so switching forth and back between WP7 and Android is very pleasent as all your contacts and appointments are instantly there

More customization (backgrounds, ringtones)

Poor contacts management (no groups, no favorites)

I love WP7 and am sticking with it. For me, there is more pros than cons. Everything Windows phone does, it does right. MS just needs to bring us the stuff that WP currently doesnt do
I have been using WP7 since it was made available for HD2 and I love it. Very fast and clean UI.
I agree with everything you have here. Its actually kind of nice to have a OS that just works. I haven't restarted my phone in almost 3 wks now. Microsoft really needs to step up with their Bing turn-by-turn directions and new hardware. If HTC comes out with better hardware for Tmobile soon I will definitely upgrade to windows phone 7.
Wp7 is ok but it really needs a better browser! I'm back to android only because of missing flash and the bad browser experience
Edit: the locked down OS is another no go for me. I need usb storage and teetering.
I prefer WP7 over Android because it offers proxy setting right out of the box. To me Android is just a fancier Windows Mobile. And I quite like the smoothness of IE though I wish it would handle more than 6 tabs.

Absence of some apps (Zinio, proper turn by turn, flash) - they are coming, and I understand, that this is normal with new OS:
I love WP7 and am sticking with it. For me, there is more pros than cons. Everything Windows phone does, it does right. MS just needs to bring us the stuff that WP currently doesnt do

I <3 WP7 forever
I have recently bought a Samsung Vibrant (T959) and being new to the Android universe I have been doing quite a bit of head scratching. Before you jump to the conclusion that I am one of those that just refuses to do research when faced with a problem (and resort to spamming help forums with threads like: “how do I make a call?” or “I know my phone is ON but why is my screen BLACK!?!?!?!?!?”) or that I am simply a dumbass, let me say that I since flashed to Trigger ROM 3.2 on the suggestion of (and with help from) the all around awesome fellow s15274n, and am learning more about the Android system every day. I believe that most of you will be familiar with the saying, "you can't go swimming without getting wet," (or similar paraphrasing), but it seems to me that in the realm of Android moding the saying goes a bit different, "you can't get wet without jumping in the deep end."
Now that I have "jumped in the deep end" at the nudging of s15274n I have a much better understanding of flashing, ClockworkMod Recovery, ROM Manager and more, however in the case of downloading flv and swf file I have run into so many dead ends that I am starting to wonder if I really am just a dumbass. I have searched Google and xda without much success, some people mention Download Crutch (the last posts on this were dated late 2008) and some replied that the abilities of the aforementioned program are available in Linda and Astro, but after downloading I can't figure out how to make them actually "download" anything. I know there is a way to download stuff from YouTube, but I don't really surf YouTube that much. On my PC I use Orbit Downloader for ALL my downloading needs (if you don't have it, GET IT!), but I can't find something similar for Android.
Before I close I’ll fill you in on my situation. I have a Samsung Vibrant (3G). I am running Trigger 3.2 and have Flash 10.3 and a number of Flash “Players.” I am on the $30 a month T-Mobile plan which only gives me only 30MB per month, I can get a “unlimited day pass” for $1.50, but after the first 30MB the data rate slow so that video streaming is impractical to say the least. I would like to be able to download a movie or tv show (or mayhap something even less PG…or even R) using wifi to view later.
I suspect that there is a way to do so and that I am just missing something very fundamental as there are almost no recent threads on this and some people seem to imply that they are doing it, they just don’t say how.
I know that this is probably just a wee bit long for such a noobishly simple question, but hours of frustration have left me with some issues to work out. While I am on the subject, has anyone been able to watch megavideo without being redirected to that STUPID F%^&ING game website?
In closing, I find Flash withdrawal to be quite drag and I would be eternally grateful help getting my fix.
