Thanks a lot Carphone Warehouse.
Well,
I lost my my imei for the default one of 0004 etc. Yes, it was my fault for messing around with the efs folder and not knowing what I was doing. I did not think it was that easy to semi-brick a phone with no known way of getting my imei back, seeing- apparently-it is hard coded in the phone. No imei = no phone calls, as most of you will know. Anyway, I thought that if I put stock ROM on, it would rectify the problem. Ha! Forget it. After that I used a jig to reset the count. I then rang Samsung to tell them that my phone crashed whilst on kies update. Oooo, Liar! They told me to take it to CPWH as they are the repairers. What? I took the phone to them. They said they had had a few sgs2's in with the same problem- I wonder why???-any, they said they would repair the fault...NICE!
Went to collect the repaired phone, repaired my arse, they just shoved the stock ROM on; they are bright, just like me. Took the phone across to their engineer and he said it would have to go back to Samsung. Did it ? No. They said that Samsung refused to repair it because.......it had no imei. Lol. Liars. They did not even ring me up, like they said they would, to say what was happening or if it had been repaired. Well, I collected my brickette from them and took the drinks-mat home.
I rang Samsung and told them what had happened. They said to send the phone to their Glasgow repairers- Regenersis. The phone has been returned to me now . Imei is correct but they had to repair the phone by installing a part......Eh?
So, you can get the phone's proper imei back but do not take it to CPWH, they know nothing about imei's.
I cannot beleive that it is so easy to ****-up ones phone just by deleting the efs folder. Since then, the Revolution ROM guy, Leo, has added emei backup to the addons in his ROM market app.
Thanks Leo.

Not the correct forum at all for a rant, but have a hunt around in the general forum - there's a post from a chap who had the same problem; I'm prtty sure he ended up being able to re-generate the correct IMEI for his phone by pushing a parts of the /EFS folder from another person's SGS2?
If I can find the link I'll post it here.

This is a clear example of not reading anything at all.. lol
glad you got it sorted.
You can't recover your own imei without a backup, using someone else's efs folder will land you with the generic imei or the other person's, and changing the phones imei is illegal.
Best bet if you don't have a backup is to get it back to samsung asap.

Oh, wrong thread, I got mixed up, my mistake
Of cause you *can* restore your IMEI, but as in that thread you need to find someone with the know how to edit the correct files, and unless you are lucky, you wont find someone.
If not in part due to legality issues.
Theres still no easy way for the average user to fix there imei without a backup so I stand by my comments
ok, i'm curious. if you copied someone elses efs folder, have you essentially cloned their phone then? you wont get their calls as that's down to the sim card right?
so what is the imei for?

I believe it is impossible to use someone elses imei because it is hard-coded into the hardware.

Take it to an outlet for whatever the network it is connected to. It will say at top right of lock screen and on the sim of course.
It has no sim card so i couldnt tell which network it is on. It is unlocked because its open to any sim. Iv tried different sims and they show the provider in the corner

just root the phone/update firmware on it, which should allow you to factory reset it.
factory reset, through recovery will get rid of the lock pattern.
edit: I believe you don't need to flash anything. Power on device holding the Volume Up + Home + Power button
Thanks guys ill give it a try

Not so sure about that. If it is reported lost or stolen then the IMEI will be blocked and all that it will be useful for is a MP3 player. Hence my advice to go to a network shop. Any one will help and check the phone is not blocked.

I feel sorry for the owner that lost the phone, and did not report the IMEI as being lost or stolen...
that'll be my very 2nd phone call if i lose my phone
the 1st phone call will be used to located the lost phone
Flash a new ROM But you can give it a factory reset (hold VOL UP + HOME + POWER buttons for a few seconds)

I would find a SGS too
it's weird how many people "Find" SGS lately...
Honestly, on an etiquette POV, I wouldn't help anyone who "found" an SGS to unlock it... But rather help him find the owner.
thats what i was thinking...glad its not mine
I have spent nearly three weeks trying to find the owner. i handed it in to the police station but got it back two weeks later because it didnt get claimed. Which you would know if you read the earlier posts in the thread. If i lost my phone i would check the police to see if it had been handed in like most ppl who are bothered bout there phone. What does that tell you?

Hello
I have posted something similar in the thread where you told us not to unlock the bootloader if your phone is highier than 11W29. But unfortunately I didnt read that thread and I have now a dead phone and my phone´s date is 11W46 (I know I messed up big time here). So my question is: Can I do anything now? Should I look for help with ppl that have the JTAG/RIFF box to resurrect my dead phone or just go to the shop and ask for a new one?
The problem is that I am not sure if my warranty is lost this way and if they will give me a refund...
Please give me back the hope of brining my phone to life again :´´(
If you have tried to unlock the bootloader you have rooted your phone. If you have rooted it you have broken the warranty so im sorry about that.

Go to shop and say that phone was dead at normal use! If in repair center will find that you brick phone by yourself you will pay some money. I was bricked my daughters phone (11W35) and take it to nearest mobile phone workshop (not SE warranty), phone was be repaired in 1 day and that was cost 15 Euros.

there isnt a way to find out if the phone is rooted as long as it doesnt open and there isnt a way to open it(they will change the motherboard or replace your phone), so it doesnt matter
@stamatis16
Great news for me . Thank you for sharing that. I could go to the shop then and just tell em the phone died. Thank you guys a lot for the optimism I ll do my best to bring it to life again
Just take it to the shop and say that you put your phone to charge and since than it cant start

Hello again...
after 3 -4 weeks I finally got a call from the shop and they told me that the phone is ready to be taken. So I did. Never had to pay for anything .. they just told me the mother board was switched. Such great news.
now
I am thinking of putting the GingerDX ROM on my phone .. Why shouldnt I do it ? Are there any problems I should know about it? Anything to tell me?
P.S.
Sorry for double post

At the risk of showcasing myself as a total moron, I thought I'd share with you my experience of sheer, unadulterated stupidity before anyone else makes the same mistake.
I've been rooting my Android devices for a long, long time without any problem, until now.
I installed a ROM that didn't agree with my N7100 and needed to get my phone back into a working state. Having only Macs at work meant I had to use Heimdall rather than the Windows-friendly Odin. Heimdall isn't quite as easy to get to grips with and couldn't handle the factory images I was throwing at it, so in a desperate attempt to fix this, I inadvertently deleted all of my EFS data...
...and I hadn't taken a backup.
A local 'backstreet' phone shop couldn't fix it, and Vodafone charged me £100 (as I'd invalided the warranty) to replace the motherboard.
So it's not only a silly mistake to make, it's an expensive one, as this 'experienced' rooter discovered
Whatever you do, never, ever delete, re-partition or reformat the EFS partition on your Galaxy Note II!
You have been warned!

apart from this it has caused issue on my device and pc, my play store was unable to download any application untill i factory reset device.
on PC side even after uninstall sw it was giving me some dll error. and had to reset my PC too.
I've seen a lot of efs repair apps, and I don't really see how any of them can possibly work at all. If the efs is deleted, you can't magically return it. That would be the same as having an app recalling a forgotten password without having anything to do with it beforehand.

Yes, it does seem as though screwing up your EFS is a bigger deal than I thought, on account of the fact that the only way they could repair my handset was by replacing the mobo. I tried so many supposed 'fixes' before dropping my handset into the Vodafone store and sadly none of them worked. On the plus side, even though I 'fessed up, the helpful people at Vodafone logged my fault as "device will not reboot" in the hope they didn't spot it was an invalidated warranty job... but they still found out
Anyway, hands up... I'm an idiot!
always backup your EFS folder into external SD card just to be on the safe side

Ok...thank you for sharing the experience...**** happens even to the brilliandest of minds!... I have a crusial question though... I had the warranty running, so htc service repaired it for free, changing the mobo! GOD! What happened next?? I couldnt unlock the bootloader (even with their official way) and root my phone! Such a huge dissapointment! SO, my question to you all guys is, if for some reason I got changed my note2 mobo, will I be able to root it again? Thank you all in advance.

i guess i did because its working but the man took out my sim card and the phone is off... im going to catch him when he will connect to the wifi.
maybe tomorrow... never lose hope!
maybe other options?
Human always smarter than machine. Samsung got a disadvantage which is included built in recovery. He can just simply boot in and factory reset everything. Or just remove all accounts that in your s4. Let's pray for the stealer is stupid.

You will be lucky if the thief has not factory reset the phone. Especially if you set pin to unlock, he will surely factory reset the phone.

Yes I this there is a notification telling that device "is found" ... but you can't prevent anybody from flashing a new firmware.
On your box there should be an IMEI number (or on your receipt) and IMEI is a bit more difficult to change so maybe you have a chance to trace it in some other way.
What about plan b from the play store?

You can set sim change alerts in the standard s4 settings aswell. I only found out the other day and it can be set to text a friend or family member.
Hope you manage yo yrack and get the phone back, too many low lifes in the world needing to steal someone elses hard earned money/phone etc. Is there no way of having the imei blacklisted? Keep that as a last resort if it can be done, as far as I know soon as its blacklisted you wont be able to track it at all

You can have the imei blacklisted so the phone will essentially be useless. You arent getting it back anyway. Might as wll keep the thief from having it.

first of all, he stole it from my bag.
second of all, if he flashes a new firmware or disconnect from my samsung account ( or even a factory reset )
can i know it? or it will just stay offline for ever?

If he just reset (factory reset), wipe data or flash a new firmware, IMEI may survive.
So IMEI tracking is your last chance.
I don't know this company http://www.trackimei.com/ but maybe worth a try?
Some other info HERE ... and HERE
BTW I could imagine that he sell it to some innocent person ... knowing it's a bit to hot to keep for him self
Dear community,
Recently I found a Samsung Galaxy S5 on a football pitch, while playing. I'm living in the middle of nowhere, so i decided to wait for somebody to call it. There were no contacts or something like that, only 2 pictures of some strange stuff:laugh: Now I've waited for 2 weeks, and nobody has called the phone or anything. Now I decided to keep the phone. I factory resetted the phone and deleted all data and cache, it's completely empty now. My question is, can the phone be tracked by using findmyphone even though I've resetted it, or do I have to install a new Rom on it?
Sorry for my English btw
Cheers

At this point I don't think phone can be trackable, if you waited for 2 weeks that was enough time for them to tracking it down if phone was set up for some kind of tracking app. Have you checked the ESN/IMEI? may be reported as lost now
Would be interesting what strange stuff was on the pictures. Was the phone part of a crime? Were it nude photos?
We will never know because you just deleted everything.
Depending on what was on the phone I would have brought it to the police or to a shop of the carrier used (if found with sim card). They could have found the owner within minutes or at least a few hours.
Despite that every phone has a so called IMEI number which can be tracked down independent from the sim used. You can change that number if you know how but there is a high risk of hard bricking the phone. And in fact I hope you hard brick it because you just deleted someones phone without trying to find the owner.
Have a nice day.

So you're trying to prevent the real owner of the phone from tracking/finding his own phone?
Guys, it's been 2 weeks since he found the phone, he said he didn't get any calls, is not like he found the phone this morning and couple hours later he did a reset. If he is telling the truth

2 weeks don't make a difference. This is not right. He could still try to find the owner. And at least not try to prevent being tracked. Too sad that you support such behaviour.

Yeah... if the owner wanted his phone back, why didn't he look for it? 2 weeks not even a call!
Depending on where you live like in UK the network could sim block it if the owner decided to by calling their provider meaning it couldn't work on any network, so if you ever decide to sell it just remember there's always that risk.
I smell some fishy fishy business. How plausible is it for OP to find a phone with no contact/log/message list whatsoever?
I mean, not even a single text message?
Then OP would like to modify the phone to prevent it from ever being recovered. Sorry buddy, you won't find assistance here.
Classic symptoms of a "I illegitimately acquired a phone, and do not wish to return it!"
The phone is trackable through IMEI. Your local telecom commission has the power to block usage from the phone rendering it useless to you.
Well, if it has a Sim card in it, it should display what carrier network it's on...take it to them or the police. Doesn't sound like you tried very hard to find the owner or you stole it.

Well you did a factory reset so i guess you had the intention to keep the phone.
Finders keepers???

two weeks....Two months or 2 years won't matter...he isn't the real owner of the phone...and trying to blocking it from being tracked by original owner is the part that I have a beef with....He needs to turn it in tot he local police station and they will decide to give it back to him after a while that it's been unclaimed. He doesn't have the legal or moral authority to decide when he's gonna magically turn into the owner of the phone.

And what is the police going to do? nothing. They are busy resolving REAL crime not trying to find the owner of a lost cell phone, whom by the way may not even filed a lost report

Yeah... because in the real world you find a phone and you waste time and effort to try to find the owner, when the owner doesn't even care.
Around 80% of my contacts doesn't memorize their own number, moreso memorize other people's number which are already saved in their contact list. If he doesn't make a backup (gmail or not) he won't have any way to contact his own number. He can probably return the phone and sim to the carrier and they will contact the owner.
I'm saying that there is no real effort on his side and he clearly has intention not to return he phone. If there's a will, there's a way.
Report it as found at the local police and at the provider and wait if the owner will claim it.

I have to agree... doesnt matter how long its been. It matters what you've done to find the owner. The most obvious thing would be to get the number/carrier off the phone and take it to one of their stores as they can easily look up the number and know who it belongs to
