HTC EVO 4G on Boostmobile - Voicemail Notification and Wifi N - EVO 4G General

This post is explained in plain English for everyone to understand what i did.
After being on this forum for years, i decided to post some information which i haven't found to be explained anywhere in details about some issues that i came across regarding voicemail notification and connecting to a Wireless N network.
If you are one of thous guys that want to use the stock rom, like myself, then you may realize that your Voicemail Notification won't work with 4.24.651.1 version IF you had your phone previously flashed on Boostmobile. Unfortunately i couldn't find any fix for the voicemail notification to work properly, there is a work around for this to work.
Apparently the voicemail notification works perfectly with the Odexed or De-Odexed version 4.22.651.2 which can be downloaded here. I personally tested both of them and the voicemail notification works as it should on my flashed HTC EVO 4G on Bosstmobile.
Now, here is something that you should know. IF you decide to download & upgraded to the stock version 4.24.651.1 Odexed, De-Odexed or from Settings/System updates/HTC software update/
4.24.651.1 your voicemail notification will NOT WORK ANYMORE. Whatever changes are made in 4.24.651.1 through the upgrade process brakes the voicemail notification for flashed evo on boostmobile.
This is only for thous that have an Wireless router that use Wifi N aka 802.11n . If you use B or G router you don't have to read this. This only applies for 802.11n.
Wireless N issues that i came across while trying to connect to my router are as follows:
I have a Belkin N F5D8233-4 router which has 802.11n support and works perfect with all my laptops that use the WiFi N technology but i had issues to connect my evo even before i did any change to this phone. The issue is that when i have selected on my router the b+g+n and the SSID broadcast name is turned off the phone will not connect for nothing. If you really don't want to broadcast your SSID from your router, by changing to 802.11g or in my case "g" with the SSID broadcast turned off the phone will connect without a problem. I personally don't like to use the 802.11g especially because i have to wait long long time to transfer large files on my LAN between pc's. So, after looking into downloading the driver for my evo on 4.22.651.2 version, i installed successfully through the zip file, turned my router back to b+g+n, but again - i couldn't connect. At first i believed that i didn't install properly the Wireless N driver for 4.22.651.2 version, but after i reinstalled couple times, i decided to play with my router.
What i found out is that, if i turn ON the SSID broadcast the HTC EVO 4G will connect successfully at N speeds aka 802.11n. Which means that they way how was the driver coded, it can't connect to an N network without the SSID being broadcast.
As far as the bandwidth frequency i left it at 20Mhz only and everything works as it should.
To check if you're connected at 802.11n speed go to Settings/Wireless & networks/Wi-fi settings/ and click on your network. A window will open, and if you see anything bigger then 54Mbps, then you're using 802.11n speeds.
On the above link you'll also see the "Kernel - HTC#1 and18-2 (may04) w/ Wireless N Enabled" which is the driver for 802.11n that works for me, after going through all these issues on my flashed phone.
I hope this brings some light for thous that still struggle with this type of problems on stock roms.

A wireless N fix is already available for 4.24. It fixes all known compatibility issues with 802.11n connectivity.

I'm not really sure if it's my router or not but I've tried that driver on 4.24 de-odexed stock rom and still won't connect to my router unless the SSID is broadcast. Also, for a flashed evo on boostmobile, the voicemail notification won't work at all with a stock rom on 4.24, only 4.22.

(SOLVED) Problems with Belkin N Wireless Router

Ok I have search a good bit online surfing the net, and 3 calls to Belkin 3 calls to T-mobile and nothing. Now my wifi works everywhere else, and my labtops connect just fine to the router but it seems like the Belkin N has something blocking it (even tried a shadow with original ROM and would not connect). So I took all the security opitions off along with the firewall and it still failed to connect. If anyone has any solutions or ideas I am willing to try. Thanks guys

It is set for B/G/and N. And i dont know about the mac security set-up. But I have tried setting it to just G or B and N and nothing. Tell me more about this mac security set-up.
There is nothing wrong with your phone. The shadow/juno has an internal wireless card that only supports b/g wifi and it's currently not compatible with n radio signals. It will work perfectly with b/g wireless networks. So, if your router has a b/g/n setting, set it to that, but do not set the security settings into a newer format, stick with wep2 or wep and it should work with no problem. If you leave it on n setting only, the internal wireless card in the shadow will not support it. You also have to remember that n wireless is not that widely used and its barely catching on. Many new electronics are still being made with b/g internal wireless cards because they are widely avaliable and come in smaller sizes suitable for phones like the shadow. Currently n wireless cards are fairly expensive and i doubt it will be made avaliable on phones anytime soon as cost would be too high for manufacturing. Hope this helps.

i have the same problem
d*mn!
has anyone sort this thing out yet?
i have the same issue using stock TMO's ROM...
Just for the sake of discussion, I'm assuming that all of you have T-Mobile Shadow phones that work fine with other wireless routers or public access points? Any problems when turning on security settings on other wireless networks (those that you or your friend can manage)?
If the problems persist with other wireless networks while using your Shadow, chances are that your Shadow's wireless card is faulty, which is not unheard of.
Please comment on your phone's status.
Also, which model of Belkin N router are you all having problems with?
All N routers are typically backward compatible so setting them to mixed mode (B/G/N) would not affect the Shadow's Wifi capabilities.
AC, there's never a wep2...I guess you meant WPA & WPA2.
scenarios
First scenario:
Home
NETGEAR 802.11g/b WIRELESS ROUTER WITH WPA-PSK
RESULTS: fine.. shadow is working great on TMO's and erofich's rom
Second scenario:
GirlFriends HOUSE
NEXXT WIRELESS 802.11g/b WIRELESS ROUTER WITH WEP (cheap stuff)
RESULTS: Excellent, shadow is working fine on both roms
Third Scenario
MACDONALDS ROUTER
UNKOWN ROUTER WITHOUT SECURITY
RESULTS: FINE... Shadow gets connection.
----------------------------------------------------------
Last Scenario
OFFICE
Belkin N-Wireless Router F5D8233-4v3(01) with latest firmware update
Result: No way to get Shadow connected. Even WIthout Encryption, MAC address control off, B & G & N bands, UPNP Off, but my laptop does get WiFi Connection (just 11g compliant WiFi card)
Just to point out, I have the same problem with my Belkin Wireless N router. In the office, I can jump onto our Netgear Wireless N router without a problem. I also have no problem jumping onto any free McDonalds networks, the networks at friends' places, or the free network in the CambridgeSide Galleria out here near Boston. This is definitely not an isolated issue. Nobody with a Shadow can get on my home network.

I have an HTC Touch that can connect to other hotspots, but not to my home Belkin router. Sometimes, if there is another connection available, it can see the router, and says that it is Available, but cannot connect; other times it won't even see it. I have checked for firmware updates, but I have the latest. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Save the settings.
- Click on the "Home" link at the top of the screen.
Internet Status should show "Connected" on the top right hand corner of the web page.
If the problem persists, please get back to us with the following information:
1. Type of connection provided by your ISP (Is it PPPOE, Dynamic or static).
2. Name of the Internet service provider (ISP).
3. Version number of the router. You would find the version number on the bottom of the device. It would be a number in a series of thousands with a prefix “ver.”.
4. If the internet connection is stable on the computers using the router?
5. If the HTC Touch detects and connects to other networks in the neighborhood?
Lilburd, if you need further assistance please feel free to write back to us and we will be happy to assist you.
Regards,
Belkin Technical Support.

The same happened to me. I also have a Belkin pre-n router and my HTC Tytn wouldn't get wifi, no matter how or what I tried. I read your comment yesterday and, although the no-so-great new firmware check utility on the web interface said there was no new firmware available, I checked the USA and UK sites, since the Spanish site doesn't even show this router anymore. I downloaded 3.01.29 from the USA site and now my HTC Tytn is getting wifi at last. Thanks a lot, you saved my day.

wifi signal, but no internet.

Hi
I just received my htc hero, and I really love it.
The only problem is, is that when i try to browse the web it doesnt load webpages. My WiFi is signal is good, i even removed the WEP key but still no succes, and on my old iPhone I can browse the web using the same WiFi connection
Does anyone know what the problem is?
Mike
Can you use the internet on your pc? Is your router setup properly?
yep everything is good..
does obtain an address ??
yes its 192.168.1.101
also if connected, select the menu key and hit advanced, make sure its not set to a fixed (static) address unless you need that.
I have mine set to 14 channels too... not that I probably need that...
i did that and it is not static also set it on 14 channels but no effect
well i had that issue when i just got my hero phone. everything was fine, signal was excellent, dhcp was ok , and it even got an ip but there was no data connection present. The only solution was to update the router's driver. In my case, it was a d link 524.try that too. ( just to precise that i had no problems with my previous phones with the router)
Another thing is to try setting the router to g mode only.

what type of router do u have? u might want to search for a hacked driver for it. o know for a fact that u can find a lot for linksys.
try to connect to other AP's just to confirm that the problem is a compatibility issue bet ur phone and ur specific router and not the phone itself.
I got the same problem.
at home it works great with the router.
But at another router by my girl,
it connects to the router but the Internet doesn't work.
Sometimes it works for about 3 minutes.
I couldn't find the problem and her laptop works great
with that router.
The router is a Sitecom Wl-173.
Do you have the same router?
I am having a similar issue. It will work for a few minutes and then although the router signal says good I get no data coming through.
This is only a recent development though as I upgraded from a Linksys WRT54G router to a Linksys WRT160NL (which is Wirless-N), now I know that the Hero doesn't support N but the router is set to mixed mode as I have more G devices than N in my house so it should still work fine.
I will try tonight though swapping the router over to just work in G mode and see how I get on.
Its been suggested that the stock Linksys firmware on all models has issues with the Hero, which is why my old router was OK as it was running Tomato firmware instead of stock Linksys.
I guess I'll just have to wait until a 3rd party releases one for the WRT160NL
I had the same problem with my D-Link 524, i changed it to a netgear and internet has worked perfectly on my Hero since. It is a problem with the D-Link firmware and how it communicates with the Hero.
I had a similar problem with my router. What did it for me was to disable all security stuff (WEP / WPA) AND access control (i.e. define which devices may connect to your router). Then try to surf via hero. If surfing works, switch back on security stuff, surfing should still work. At least it did for me.

The wifi-stack in the kernel on the hero doesn't work well with many APs. With D-link I've found problems when the boxes run in 802.11n with b/g compatibility. The results are best with the AP locked at 802.11g.

I think it is the G2 version, yes. It does say G2 on the label on the back of the router.

Can't see new Belkin N+ router

Ok, so I bought a new wireless router and my hero refuses to pick it up, Belkin N+. It saw my previous linksys wrt54g just fine. All of my computers and my iphone 3g see the new belkin fine also. I am running modaco 2.0, have tried all the other roms also with the same outcome. Anything I can do here? Return the router? smash my hero? jk

2 Things:
1. make sure you are broadcasting a B/G singal not just N.
2. Delete all of your existing "saved" wifi networks off the phone, anything you have previously connected to. then reboot. Seems like Redneck had an issue like this.
The router is set to allow b,g,n. I dont have any networks saved, I've flashed several different roms. As I said my iphone picks it up, so I'm gonna say it has to be a problem with the hero being the only thing in my house that won't see it.
Try changing the channel the router is broadcasting at. Maybe its too high for the Hero
channel 1, 20/40Mhz
well I switched the router to only broadcast in b/g and now the hero picks it up. The whole purpose for the new router was "n". so what gives? All my other "g" devices including computers and again my iphone work on "g" even when "n" is enabled. y not the hero?
I also haven't been able to get anything to install from the market since yesterday (the reason for trying to get on wifi anyway) Been flashing roms to try to get my standard apps to install and/or connect to wifi. Nothing. this thing is really asking for a flight into the woods.
Ok I gave up. turning off "n" on the belkin was the only thing that made the hero detect it. All other "g" devices work with "n" enabled. Ended up just setting up the old linksys as an access point for just the hero to use, what a waste.
do you have any N devices? if not then having it on won't help the speed of your network, only cause problems.
bmr34, i have the same router, and my hero doesnt see the wifi connection when the router is in B/G/N mode either. really irritating seeing as my notebook actually has N...
disabling N was the only solution for me, as i have no other router...
I know it's not much, but i have an airport express broadcasting BGN and my hero can see it..so maybe its your router?
What security protocol is being used on your router?
I have found that I cannot connect to a WPA-Personal and AES wifi. However, the newer WPA2 and AES is just fine. Also, TKIP works just fine.
i'm thinking that it might be the security settings, running mixed n,g mode fine here on belkin N+, ill check my settings and report back
Please do, as am having the same problem, Hero sees n+ in b+g mode only, not b+g+n.

Sorry to dig up an OLD thread, but just in case someone runs across this in a google search, as I did, then here's what you need to do:
Under wireless > security (in your belkin n+ setup page), set your authentication type to WPA2/PSK ONLY (not WPA/PSK + WPA2/PSK). For whatever reason, that's the issue that's freaking the Hero out.
If, for whatever reason, you still need to have the dual option for WPA/WPA2, I was going to use the guest access portion to dedicate to the Hero (as I really don't need to try to connect to the home network via mobile).

Wifi router working for anyone?

I have a vodafone uk hd2 and have been really impressed with it as a product. I have not had any luck with the supplied wifi router software, I go through the minimal setup and press start and as far as the phone is concerned the router is up and running, the problem i have is that neither of my laptops can see the router.
Has anyone had any luck using it? Is it possible that vodafone have disabled it somehow?
Alternatively so i can manually add the router does anyone have the following details that would be setup automatically;
wep in use? is it 128 pass phrase or 40/128 key?
open system authentication or shared key?
im guessing the wep index would be 1?
Thanks
Search .. it was discussed 10 times already.
Thats as maybe but none of the several threads have a real answer as to why some people have it working and others dont. It also seems that the functionality can be effected by soft reset which isnt ideal at all. Also i havent been able to find any of the above original settings that i asked for in the threads hence the post.
Works for me
Hi,
works great for me - just have to make sure that you're not connected to WLAN with the HD2 when trying. Disabling WLAN, then starting WIFI-Router does the trick for me.
Good luck !
I am on vodafone and wifi router works perfectly for me. It worked when I had the stock 1.43 rom and it works with all the cooked roms I have used since.
i did notice it only works with 802.11g not with 802.11b devices like PSP or some other phones..
Is that really the case that it only works with 802.11g devices? Im fairly sure my netbook isnt new enough to have 802.11g and as such probably wont see the router. Has anyone found a way to get the router visible to 802.11b devices?
Wonder if u have enable the N band function . I think Wi fi router will not work properly when it is enable. I did numerous testing with my laptop and iphone . When n band is enable on HD2 , Iphone can surf net thru HD2 but not the laptop . When n band is disable , device can connect no problem ..... So , to get wifi router to work , just have to stick with g band until someone can solve the issue .
Just to add on my previous post , I tried using WMWIFIRouter , also come back to same result ....

The N band doesn't work anyway on the HD2.. better turn it off.. just because there's a parameter in the registry doesn't mean it works..
I have a N router at home and while it looks like it's doing N and it states "auto" instead of 54mbs, it still connects to the narrow band channel on the router..

N Works. I have a Linksys WRT320N router that can operate on N only, and the phone connects fine (at regular 2,4 ghz, the new 5 ghz doesn't work). Didn't speedtest.
I tried the standard sharing prog and wmwifi router (different versions) and can only, with a lot of effort, get my laptop on the net through the BT of my HD2. I have the N tweak on. Also did the trying in range of the router.
Any chance it's the computer you are trying to connect with? Tried with my work computer, but couldn't because our Dells have computer to computer(adhoc) connections locked out for security. Does the wifi router function show up as adhoc or access point?

ok, now try and get N speed with only one antenna...
Ok Ive got a similar problem with the wifi router and vodafone
everything works hunky dory wifi router turns on, computer connects all is good only when i try and access a website i get a http error 403 forbidden message as if voda have restricted access i have no idea how this would be possible though.
Ive tried many site same result and many browsers chrome, safari, ie, firefox and opera
same thing
the strange part is that tweetdeck and skype work while the browsers don't
HHMMM
anyone else experienced this problem
As I'm on O2 I was quite keen to flash a new ROM to get the wifi router working as they did the dirty on us by ripping it out of the 1.43 they shipped it with...suffice to say that I'm not overly impressed with it after the couple of trials I've made using 1.66 ROM as the speeds its capable of generally fall short of what you get if you simply connect it via usb and use data sharing..bear in mind that I've only tried it twice so far and as such I may refine my opinion with further trials in different locations but as I was hoping to avoid repeatedly connecting leads to the usb socket it's a bit of a blow sooner or later, wear and tear will be an issue to think about.
my findings
had a play with the router, just to see and initially thought it wasn't working.it connected, but wouldn't pass any data.
25 minutes of my best network technician skillz later still no joy... that is until I remembered the laptop has a fixed ip and default dns server address set. as soon as I set them to automatic, bingo, fully working.
did a speed test from the laptop (mobilespeedtest.com) and got just under 900kbit over 3g. winner!
The connection only shows as 802.11b, but that's fast enough for the 3g connection so no worries.
the only down side is that it's adhoc, so the wifes n95 doesn't see it..but then again thats possibly a blessing In disguise!
EDIT as mentioned by the poster below, I had three connections present, (wap.o2.co.uk, mobile.o2.co.uk and paymonthly.o2.co.uk) and the router wouldn't work on them all, though I forget now which it would and which it wouldn't.
I never tried with 1.43 O2 ROM, but after flashing to 1.66 stock rom I just tried this.
For some reason I have 3 internet connection options:
1) Pay monthly contract
2) o2 active
3) mobile web
My standard connection is "mobile web" so I tried this first, and my laptop couldnt see the HD2 as a WIFI router. I then tried the "pay monthly contract" option and it worked straight away.
Now under my Notifications screen under O2 3G UK, I have two connections running, and the download speeds running the same as my home broadband due to the HSPA connectivity available through the phone.
Anyway, I just thought I would share this with anyone it may help.

[Q] Focus doesnt find wireless-n network!!

On the specs it says the phone supports wireless n (802.11n), but when i go to settings and search for networks it wont show my local wireless n network, is it the phone or just wp7 that currently doesn't support wireless n?!
No problem with wireless N here. But WP7 doesn't support hidden networks. Make sure your wireless network is visible. Also not clear is whether or not the phone can connect to 5GHz band.

This is one of those unusual known software issues. The phone is capable of n, but the mediocre wifi software/interface the the phone is packaged with has no options to enable it. This is set to be a first round fix. Chalk this up there with the no hidden SSID's support right now.
There is no good reason as to why your phone cannot do this now and you probably could go into the diagnosis panel and figure it out, but that is not the users responsibility.
MS must have a great reason, but it is not readily apparent.
Yeah my router does 2.4ghz G & N plus 5ghz N; so it connects but it would be nice to know what it is connecting at. I am sure it doesn't do 5ghz because that ssid is not found as an option but it would be nice to know it is connecting to the N 2.4 and not the G.
It doesn't support 5ghz N. I had to change my router back to 2.4.

Or you can just let it connect to 2.4 11g instead. There is no benefit for it to be in 11n other than burn your battery faster.
My router is set on 5ghz wireless n, so i guess that's why the phone cant show the ssid.
