[Q] Need help with Heimdall - Continuum General

Hey can anyone help me use heimdall? I use Mac and i'm trying to flash the package from the link below to unbrick my phone. Thanks in advance!

Heimdall should work, but no guarantees on that. To flash via Heimdall, take the Odin image, remove .md5 from the file name, unzip, and input the appropriate files into Heimdall. zImage is the kernel, factoryfs.rfs is the system, and recovery.bin is of course recovery. If all else fails, throw the files on a thumb drive and use a friend's Windows machine. I'm Mac user, but I used Odin through Bootcamp to get this done.

Unzip... then untar... then follow pastorbennett's simple instructions.

Yeah i did that but i have no idea where to put those files once i untar them. Ill post screenshots of the UI later on but the problem is i have no idea where each file goes. Im using heimdall 1.3.0 frontend by the way if that helps.

here are pictures of the UI

pastorbennett is the only Mac user I know of with experience on this device... you might want to try dm'ing him... the Linux version is not even close to that.

im somewhat good with linux if yall need any help on ubu.

I'm good with the Ubuntu version of Heimdall... It's the OS X version we're dealing with here...

What version are you using 1.x.x wise? I've tried downloading 1.3.0 for ubuntu and it's the exact same UI as ntien has... it seems that it's not just pooapple (haha)
Where as the frontend that you show in pastorbennets thread seems a little easier to grasp XD
And I've also not been able to find downloads of the earlier versions of Hiemdall to check if the interfaces are different so i myself have had no such luck with getting it to work
We're in this together fellas!
Edit: apparently this is being worked out in another thread :/

Looks like I'm on 1.1.1 ... Not sure I want a newer version if the UI changes that much.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any success with Heimdall on Mac OS. Even when adb would recognize the phone, Heimdall wouldn't. I have a separate HD with Windows installed on it, so I switch HD's and use Odin when I need to flash anything that can't be done in CWM.
I also tried to use Odin through Parallels, but still had no luck. The phone was recognized as "phone gadget" or something like that, when in download mode. I've learned that when running into a problem with the Continuum, usually the simplest answer is the most correct: Samsung screwed up!

Downgrading to DI01 modem

So a lot of people who've used the all-in-one DI01 restore package have run into an issue where their phone appears in Windows as a CD drive, without access to their SD card, nor the phone through ADB.
One solution requires the user to reboot the phone tethered to the computer after which everything works properly - until the next time the phone is rebooted. If the phone boots while not tethered, it again appears as a CD drive upon connecting to the computer.
I have two questions pertaining to this issue:
1- Is there a more (or completely) permanent solution? Having to boot the phone tethered all the time is rather inconvenient.
2- For those wanting to restore back to DI01, can we flash the modem.bin file from the all-in-one package separately, and then just use the stock rom and kernel that have been available for months? All the modem.bin upgrades (DJ05, DL09) have been TAR'd, is there anything special to this? Can I just TAR the modem.bin file from the all-in-one package and then flash it with Odin like any other modem file?
Thanks in advance.
I believe the problem is related to the kernel. Has anyone with the problem downloaded/flashed a different DI01 kernel? Or tried the stock kernel from the thread with the other stock DI01 files (not the all in one package thread)?
The problem seems to persist even after upgrading back to DJ05 (modem/kernel/rom), so either it's something other than the kernel, or if it is the kernel, it's then changing something outside the kernel.
About my second question - if I want to flash just the DI01 modem from the all-in-one package, can I simply tar it and then flash it with Odin?
I had the same issue where I downgraded to DI01 and attempted to root phone. My phone wasn't recognized in ADB so i booted back into Mac OSX and sure enough, when i plugged my phone it would read disk not readable and couldn't access my SD card. so i just rebooted back to Windows 7, odin the DI01 package again and it worked again. Go figure...
Honestly, I think it may be more of a driver bug than anything else. Notice nobody mentioning these issues has had them in Linux.
Could be, everyone I've seen with the problem has said they're on Win7 64.
On the other hand, the problem only appears to emerge after using the all-in-one downgrade, so while it's possible the driver is contributing to the problem, something in that downgrade is setting it off.
Edit: Also, people with the problem have similar issues in OS X - the SD card being unreadable when the phone is connected, so if it is a driver issue, it's cross-platform.
I've seen it happen after upgrading to dj05 as well. The only thing that seems to be in common is os x, or windows 7. Very frustrating.

I have this problem also and I have Win 7 64. Maybe that's the common denominator? At least there is a workaround even if it is inconvenient. Hopefully a permanent solution can be found yet....... if there is any testing anyone needs done to solve this, let me know and I'll be glad to help.

I'd be interested in seeing a logcat of a device with the problem and a device without...

One other weird thing I noticed - after I downgraded my wallpaper went back to one I had a while back and I can't change it. It will say it successfully set a new wallpaper but its still the same one. The only thing I can change it to is a live wallpaper. Any other ones, from any wallpaper app or the gallery, just won't take. Any thoughts?

Just a FYI that I used the"all in one" revert to DI01 and my PC still recognizes my SD card. I have Win 7 64 bit.
I reverted from the "all in one DJ05" that loaded the stock VZW bloat ware system.
So not everyone has this problem.

Interesting - I wonder what you did differently. The only thing that jumps out at me is that you used the all in one DJ05 first and I didn't - when I did DJ05 and DL09 I did them all individually. Not sure if this would make a difference.....

I've done it multiple times too without the problem.
Thats said:
Code:
adb shell
dmesg > /sdcard/dmesg.txt
Then email that to me. Make sure the phone is plugged in, with the problem.
Ok I'm away from home without my laptop today but I will get that to you as soon as I can.

Here's a possible clue:
The people experiencing this problem say that when they connect their phones to Windows, it shows up as a CD drive. When they open the volume, all they see are some type of drivers and a bootstrap - not files that are on their SD card.
Sounds like what might be happening is that the phone is sharing the wrong volume or partition.

Quick rooting question

any way to root and install clockwork mod on a Mac?

If you mean to use a Mac to download the necessary files and what not - I've been there. I'm on a macbook, this drove me crazy when I first tried rooting my old mytouch 3g. Make sure you are using Firefox to download the files. If downloaded through Safari it won't work.
Don't know if that's what you meant lol, but hope it helped.
nah I meant what you download and run...the instructions in the development section is for windows...I need OSX based
Well, I rooted my phone with a mac...what exactly are you having trouble with? Aside from downloading the files and putting it on the sd card, I did it all through the phone anyway...
But I'm also not a hardcore tech guy, I don't mess much with ADB and what not, I just used the Unlockr's method...
really? I could have sworn when I looked at theunlockr, it was windows only
I used to have a MT4G, and it got lost. Just got it replaced, and now I have a mac (had windows before)...so now I'm starting back at square one.
Yeah I def just followed their method, using macbook...I don't think the instructions are really for one or the other...the files you need to download can be done via both pc and mac...all you gotta do with the computer is download the files and transfer them to the phone...after that, everything is done just through the phone...the video they show you is with windows, but the idea is the same. Just download the necessary files (use firefox), and then follow instructions, should work, it did for me.

Backtrack ubuntu linux on mb860 olympus atrix 4g

This is NOT native ubuntu, THATS why i wanted it. You can use CYANOGENMOD roms and this will just load like a normal app, or a normal terminal. Or in my case provide me with a capable server in my pocket. Thjs js so cool imo. Because i can run all the old perl scripts directly on my phone... People can use my little perl scripts right from my pocket! I like this!
I use android 2.3 but after i got it on 2.3 i factory reset, installed multiple other roms, including ICS roms and it all worked. But alot of cool features backtrack has to offer seem to require lots of reconfiguration on 4+. i recommend android 2.3 nutrino rom i got it all working godly on there. Without editing the boot.img once... Or rly anything..
This runs as an app and the app "changes" the "root" directory. So basically its a little hack, its not native ubuntu.
I heard people telling me my phone cant run arch linux or ubuntu and i beg to differ.
Here is the only link i used to get a full blown capable (whatever) in my pocket.
http://stuffresearch.tor.hu/?p=245
After your done. Download a vnc client app to use the graphical interface (startx X.org desktop)
After your done with that download a ssh server app (that way your ubuntu chroot will be able to navigate android filesystem)
The vnc server and ssh server do not need to route trafic to your lan nor internet.

After you got it on your phone i recommend... Unlocking ALL the arm repositories and deleteing the bloat packages cause you wont have alot of room.
I get 2gb of room for ubuntu apps after removing bloat.

perhaps this is what ppl were talking about when they said that to you? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2078919 not really sure, i'm more of a stock rom/cm rom kind of guy myself. Ubuntu is still too new for me on a computer for me to consider it for a rom on a phone
Thank you for link.
But I don't see what I can do with Linux on my phone.
What is your motivation to run it? What useful thinks you can do with it?

idk, that's why I stick to the CMs, stock ROMs, and other custom mod's along those lines.
I hope you guys read this.....
You can do almost anything you can on normal ubuntu... And it does not load unless you load it.
Honestly if you dont need ubuntu or a useful linux dont get it. But with this u can run linux binaries that are generally common.... And not just the tiny subset that busybox brings. But a giant giIant giant giant giant awesomeness
For example i love loading firefox and runnng the same addons that i run on my pc on cellphone.
I also love being anle to send my phone shell commands directly AND HAVE BINARIES that make that useful. (I can write perl scripts to automate it all now, powerfully)
For example you can run wireshark to sniff data.... You can really do anything ubuntu can do.
Usually downloading linux distros onto your phone *for chroot is very easy. But since backtrack is so big i needed an extra step which i couldnt find untill i read this link. I was very great-full to that guy. I hope he can help someone else thru me. Because i needed backtrack on my phone yes or yes.
I can now fully program using emacs directly on my phone (i connect a computer keyboard to my phone) but for me its always been a dream to have a real computer in my pocket that i can use to program and run real internet browsers and diagnose networks. Believe it or not i stay legal, very ironically
I know how nerdy that sounds, but theres a hacker in all of us, and this makes your phone a weapon.
Tbh most people wont even want this. But those who do will be so happy to know that they cAn hack the image to under 4gb and hence can run it on their phone. It just all works right out the box.
Just look at what ubuntu can do and if u rly rly want that and it works on the phone install this.
I think im going to do my own directions and make it two steps.
That way people will just click click and see for themselves what new things they can do.
THIS DOES NOT DELETE YOUR CM ROM. YOU CAN RUN THIS SIDE BY SIDE TO YOUR ROM, AND EVEN HAVEA. DUAL BOOT SETUP + THIS.
Its fully compatible to work side by side because ita a chroot not a real install

You have linux already on your phone. Android runs on linux. Thats why chroot is so easy i think
This is about backtrack ubuntu. Linux comes when you buy the phone.
I tried typing "what useful things can ubuntu do" into google
But that wasn't helpful lol...

This isnt a rom though. Im not knowledgeable in this area but i think since your running chrooted the android system still occupies the read only memory. I might sound dumb but i this is not in any way a rom. It fully sits in your REAL INTERNAL "sdcard" memory. Unless you load it ^.^ it auto closes when u close the terminal.. Atleast it shud
I believe that would be the case if you were to run ubuntu natively... Aka delete android.

If you had to Google something like that you probably have no clue what BackTrack means or what it is meant for and should avoid following this guide anyway.
Enviado desde mi MB855
Sorry for insulting you. But I have was programming nearly a decade before ubuntu even existed. It is a mere derivative, and backtrack is just a set of tools.
Google is powerful, you can hack with google. Googling what ubuntu is good for is perfectly ok imo, nothing to do with much.
Im NOT in IT... BUT I code 29 hrs a day average, atleast i try.
Si pensas que ubuntu esta correlacionado con la habilidad de programar estas en la ironia.
I dont see how any human would not like just having backtrack ubuntu on their phone ^.^
Even if i did not know already know all the tools.... You can just read... Or something ^.^
That guide was like 1 step from what i had done off the top of my head also... -.-
Not mean at all. But usually a programmer or someone in the IT industry knows what backtrack's purposes are. I am afraid I was just expressing an opinion in an open forum and didn't mean to come out as insulting or hurtful. Instead, I was trying to avoid you causing damage to your phone by venturing into the unknown. Calling someone dumb on the other hand IS insulting.

can you send me the full output you got when you ran bootbt? Maybe also the android VERSION and the bootbt source but first read bellow.
When you finish all the editing and you upload the /BT5 folder to your cellphone. are you sure your putting everything in the INTERNAL SDCARD. And also try moving all installed apps out of INTERNAL SD and into INTERNAL MEMORY. (I think i read somewhere somekid had to remove the real sdcard also... I dont see why lol, and i didnt have too.
Then you should just load up a teminal emulator on android and type: su and then sh bootbt. You said you did "sh bootsh" from adb. I did it from phone. But once the script runs it shouldnt matter where its invoked from so long as your running as root?
Try typing adb root first from pc.
Or type su first from terminal emulator on your phone.
To reply to mot.a.troll.... Im sorry im dumb and take suddle things like that as a big insult because i really dont think knowing about ubuntu or even backtrack. Is a requirement for this or for following that guide. I am damiliar with unix... Believe it or not. And i am DEFFINITLY not in IT, idk what "it" even means whaha. All i enjoy doing is programming when i was a kid in basic, and now 90% just perl all day (for many many years)
Ill edit my insult to u since your right, and its because im dumb and get offended. I wish i never even knew what ubuntu was period lol, but setting it all up manually is hard work and i just needed things working lol
I dont think the problem has anything to do with your linux distro or adb. Im 99.999999999% sure lol
Hacker ? Backtrack? *cough* , gentoo based linux for arm next time but nice effort.
Fyi backtrack really seems ok for live cd wifi stuff, but as phone had no promiscuous mode on wifi driver, whats the point ?
Just an off note, if u want linux on atrix this badly then why not chip in with porting ubuntu touch.

Sorry if me being a hacker offends you or your definition of it. Personally idgaf.. my current job basicaly implies i atleast write clever enough perl to make money lol...
And for your off note... This may sound very "ignorant".. but i HATE the owners of ubuntu. and hate how closed it is. I would never help them.
Also about the promiscuous mode, I wasnt even aware phones had no promiscuous capable wifi drivers... are you sure? Either way I dont see why you NEED it for the plethora of tools offered to you just by downloading an .img file.... I understand gentoo is alot better... but i have no time? This took me 30mins... because i literally copy pasted the commands and then waited...
use your brain? I could hack on windows, ios, android, ipad, unix, linux, pickyourfavorite here... hacking is an abstraction above the operating system imho *cough* *noob* ...and chrooting android PERIOD. gives OBVIOUS benifits.

My definition of "hacker" is someone that manages to create a tool or find a way to overcome an obstacle that wasn't supposed to be passed, such as wifi passwords. in this sense, just by using someone elses tools doesn't put you into the category of hacker.
I see chroot can have a benefit, but not by much as it depends on the android os. As 95+% of androids wifi drivers are closed with no promiscuous mode then the generic way of wifi hacking isn't possible. Correct me of I'm wrong but I'm going to assume that's why u want backtrack
Noob? Im have a ubuntu touch port up and running already and. With custom kernel this gives much more benefit over a chroot .

[Q] Installing Ubuntu 13.04 on Mexus 7(2012)

Hi guys, I can't find any recent posts to help me so sorry if this is redundant. I want to install Ubuntu Desktop (not touch) on my nexus 7. I downloaded a mirror for the image but i cant find the one click installer and have no idea how to push the files myself. I installed the Touch version to my nexus just to try and get an understanding of how it does it but it was way over my head. Thanks for any and all help!
If you have no idea how to push the files yourself, are you sure you are ready to attempt even a one click installer? What will you do if it fails?

Well to be honest, I figured out how to push using (sudo fastboot devices) all that junk got it stuck in a loop but then found out! If I download the bootimg and the IMG file I can pish both the first as sudo fastboot flash boot /path/.booting and the other sudo flashboot flash user data /path/.img suggestions are still welcome though. I took off the Ubuntu 13.04 and am currently installing LXDE might make a thread for people like me that want it yet.
multirom
I suggest you install twrp and multirom, then search for multiboot ubuntu, there's a thread round here wIth a handful of precompiled linux distros. This allows you yo keep android while enjoyong running linux.
Oh and I reccomend not using unity in ubuntu iy is terrinle and keeps crashing.
I have ubuntu permanently installed but very rarely use it. Lacks hardware accelleration, which is a shame as I think nvidia o[en sourced the tegra drivers. I dod have a little go at getting them running but failed miserably!

I found that installing just Ubuntu 13.04 desktop image and installing gnome or lxde and changing the swappiness to 5 or 0 works great. It runs great. No lag, i have been able to use it without any problems. Did you try that? As for the hardware acceleration I looked into that but seeing as I'm just learning linux and its programming I don't wanna try it. If anybody wants me to post how i installed everything to my tablet I could post the images and give a little tutorial if needed just to help
Ubuntu is a useless OS at this point.
Also....are Mexus devices really cheap? Like Sorny TV's?

[GUIDE...KIND OF] How to get Jodin3 working on OSX El Capitan

I just got my Tab S2 710 and was trying to get TWRP, rooted, etc. but couldn't get Jodin3 working in my browser or as a download while running El Capitan so I started researching. I didn't find a guide but I was able to figure it out, hence this post. I found a thread about El Capitan needing some files signed which the last Heimdall package (1.40) didn't have but someone created an unofficial signed package and when I installed it, everything worked. This is a kind of guide because I don't really understand why it worked, just that it did.
Download and install Heimdall 1.40 from https://bitbucket.org/benjamin_dobell/heimdall/downloads/heimdall-suite-1.4.0-mac.dmg
the install will fail but I don't know if the unofficial version is dependent on this one so I put it in here. The unofficial one below is less than a mb and this one is ~7 so no idea what's going on there
Download and install the signed, unofficial Heimdall 1.4.1 from https://bitbucket.org/benjamin_dobell/heimdall/downloads/Heimdall-1.4.1-Unofficial-Signed.dmg and install
should install fine
Download Jodin3 jar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2598203
updated link to go to xda Jodin Casual thread. Should work the same but I haven't tried it
the default app to open jar files on Mac is jar launcher so you should just be able to double click it and it'll open
Double click Jodin3 jar and connect your tablet. I won't go into an Odin guide because it's all over the internet and I don't really want to.
So that worked for me. I can't really help troubleshoot because I'm not sure of the inner workings but if someone posts a question, maybe another user can jump in
Nill
Download link is down
I put a new Jodin link in to an xda thread. Should work but next time give a heads up about which link you mean, had to try them all.
Thanks! Hopefully I can use this to fix my friends S6 tomorrow. Ill post back and let you know if it worked
So Jodin is running but I can't find Heimdall on my mac to open. Kinda an issue cuz I need it to get my PIT file

You should be able to open hemidall if you command click on it (two finger tap with touchpad) and click open - doesn't just open with a double tap
