Need advise on Atrix broken screen... - Atrix 4G General

Hi All....I shattered my screen last night on the swings with my kid..
Anyways, I have the best buy geek squad protection plan and they cover accidental damage.
The thing is, I am unlocked, rooted, CM7'nd...
Im wondering if my warranty will be void once I bring it in for unlocked BL?
What do you think the chances of my warranty becoming void is?
Maybe the better alternative would be to replace the screen myself and save the warranty for when I REALLY need it? (for something that I can't fix myself maybe)...
Im thinking that they might still fix it, but cancel the remainder of my warranty because of the BL being unlocked..
Thanks.

I don't think the protection plan that you actually spent money on will be void. Also, based on my own experience, people who work at these stores have no idea how to identify an unlocked phone, so you can fool them easily if you flash a stock rom before sending it in.

Thanks for your response...
With Best Buy Geek Squad, they send it in to Moto for repair (per the sales guy).
Also, my BOOTLOADER is unlocked, therefore when I boot my phone it states "Unlocked" across the top... I think that alone voids any warranty's right?

I would reread the protection plan. If it plainly states accidental with no fine print for them to easily back out of it, I recommend backing out on your phone. With a truck.
I voided my warranty and your mum.

Why? So I can get an all brand new one? I think they still have to send it in to Motorola technically "for review"

Good luck reviewing a phone that has a car run over it.

Yea I'd recommend breaking the screen even more so they can't see the unlocked message when they boot it up lol.

Burn a few papers and give them to the warranty guys saying that you burnt it.

Hate to be a mood killer but when you unlocked your bootloader it clearly stated that it will void your warranty... if you can't handle your responsibility of breaking your phone maybe you shouldn't have taken the chance... its like building your house in a flood zone and trying to collect flood insurance when it happens... its people like you that drive up the cost of insurance for those that actually are "grown up" enough to accept the consequences... IMHO

When i got my insurance plan I asked if it would cover me after I unlocked the bootloader and the at&t rep said yes. Dunno about best buy though.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium

I had to send my unlocked phone to attention for warranty exchange. I flashed 1.83 then did the update to gb through the PC from motos site. It removed the unlock message for me. Might be worth a try for you. Took like a hour or more to do the update though.

two probs with phone

My phone was rooted and running a lag fix and was working fine untill i saw a cool theme that i wanted. I tried to flash it but it bricked my phone enstead. I was able to get it back buy following some instructions using odin. I got it back but without avitar, sims, and media hub. Now it also restarts over and over when i have my wifi on. I turn wifi off and it stays on. Is there a fix for what is going on? and is there any way i can get back avitar and the media hub. If not im going to take the phone back. Its not rooted anymore so it should not be a problem. What kinda of warrenty does to phone have i bought it the day it came out?
you get a one year warranty against factory defects. just call t-mo and tell them your phone keeps boot looping. they'll send you out another one in no time

Maybe people should take responsibility for their actions instead?
Can I just go to tmo store and get a replacement or is it something I need to call on

If you're past the two week grace period you can go into a store, but they will just order one for you there. Even with insurance they won't hot swap you at the store.
Use Odin again and QUIT MESSING WITH YOUR PHONE. Why are you all encouraging the op to get a replacement?

You did this to yourself, YOU are responsible! don't try to scam T-mo into giving you a new device for something YOU did.

You would be committing fraud which is a crime. Anyone who advises you how to do it would also be committing a crime.
How about you ask how to fix the problem and I'm sure people well versed in Odin will walk you through the fix.
Thanks for helping to drive up the cost of the phones, much appreciated. You VOIDED the warranty by rooting it, deal with it, not expect the rest of us to subsidize your phones.
do people not read disclamers? the devs clearly tell you that your phonw might blow up, so take responsibility for what you do to your crappy phones and man up.

Will t-mo replace defect unit if you bought it from ebay?
people REALAX. I went to tmobile and told them what i did and they said the root that i had done DID NOT MESS WITH THE WARRINTY. And that i should have brought the phone in before doin anything to it. I have INSURANCE and I will get a new phone tomarrow. Now the guy that helped my had the same root on his vibrant and that he would not have done it if it did mess with the warrinty. So I come on here for some help and you guys toss me under a bus. I never said i was going to LIE TO TMOBLE i would not do that. I still had to pay 130 bucks any way.
Yea, so suck it you war mongers. LOL

Your friendly neighborhood tmobile hacker boy may have taken it back but the policy has always been very clear that rooting your phone will void your warranty. Regardless of whether they took it back or not, the fact remains, you broke it and you want someone else to eat some of the responsibility for your actions.
I told them that i was the one that messed it up so i did not lie to them. I filed a claim with the insurance and they said as long as the type of root that i did was a small one that even though i messed it up there concearn is the warrinty of the phone. its not like all of you are these saints. I did nothing wrong. The insurance could have declined the claim but they did not they just said that i problably should not do it again and that if it did happen again for the same reasone that they would reject the claim. So i did not have any friends at tmo or the insurance. So im all done with this now. Beside all of you have rooted any way so let my say that i hope it does not happen to you.

Root and liability....

Ok, so we all want root access, and we're willing to accept the penalty for it. Loss of warranty. I know why HTC/T-Mobile won't give it to us, cost of repairs for the dishonest ones who eff up the phones then send them back. I for one would register my imei with them for root if there is a software issue that fries the phone I'm effed. Why not do this, gets rid of the liability for them, root for us. I know there will be some that say, but the hinge, etc. those should be covered, a it's not a cause from rooting. Like HTC did with the Nexus for those with the unlocked ones.

Additional legal hurdles and database maintenance that would cost money.
They would have to monitor all the devices and push that data to the carrier so that they were on the same page. That would be expensive.
So then we all pay a small fee and they call it a dev phone and we get beta updates, and "tryout" updates first.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Htc blocked out root to cut down on having to spend money on repairing phones that poeple messed up. Simple as that. They will not change a lock down phone to unlock because you paid a fee. The nexus one was under google mainly so htc said ok it can be unlocked but we will not cover it. Also unlocking the bootloader the way they did made it easy to tell if you modded the phone when the went to repaire it

Asurion.. claiming lost instead of damaged

If I claim damaged to asurion will they make me send in my phone(bricked)? vs.. claiming lost phone I can keep my original? .... is this cheating?
Cheating? No.
Insurance fraud, a criminal act? Yes.
is me bricking the phone covered legally? If I tell them I messed it up will they cover it?
Un-brick it....seriously. There is enough information on this fora to fix 99.9999999% of all problems with this phone. Stop being lazy.
Well.. I've got an galaxy s 4g.. so not so easy..I've been fairly persistent in trying for about 3 days.. problem is no .pit file available. I've tried everything.. get a couple tar's to load about 95 percent but fail right at the end. I do have an extra tmo phone i can use for the time being but the sms4g forum is a very small group compared to the vibrant community here. I know something will probably come out in time but the way things look on our board it could be some time.
You're in the wrong forum...
It is insurance fraud....get F*cked if you are trying to "beat" the system. You knew what could happen if you played around, and now you want to wash your hands of it. Have patience.
I mean you could tryv and play the pitty game and say "i master reseted it and it broke idk whats going on?!?" Then hope they dont find out. And if they do say you have no idea what they are talking about.
(waits for trolls to say zomg thats wrong!)
I use swype so expect bad grammar and errors
Zomg that's wrong!
Insurance don't care what you've done to the phone as long as your willing to pay the deductible.
Its warranty repair that's void by rooting

In that case, I'd say they also don't mind raising the rates for everyone to cover all the extra payouts caused by these sort of folks. Sure insurance goes up every year but if you think this irresponsible behavior has no bearing on that then I must strongly disagree.

Broken devices are still worth money. A bricked phone can still be reflashed by the manufacturer and resold as a refurb, or components from it can be reused on other damaged/broken devices.
If you report it damaged you have to send the device back. Lost, you don't because you obviously don't have it. Stolen, you don't, but you'll need to provide them with a police report # to get a replacement.
Well I struggled a bit with this.. but bottom line is I had no intention of damaging the device.. kinda like if I took it to a water park and it got wet...or when I take it when I go jogging I know I'm at risk at dropping it. It's not like I damaged it on purpose just to get a new one. So I made the claim and was honest when describing the damage... it said I needed to call them for them to research my damage more.. so I called and they didn't ask me anything.. just where I want the new one sent. They also told me I had the option of sending the damaged one back or not.. if I didn't that Tmobile would charge me another $30 dollars. I specifically asked her if I wanted to keep it for future problems like glass breakage or something else and she said it was totally up to me and just to remember the $30 dollar charge.
So tonight someone posted a .pit file and of course it worked and I'm back up and running so tomorrow I'll call and let them know it started working again and will send the replacement back and hopefully get my $130 returned sooner than later. THanks for the replies.. was good to get some feedback.

*BRICKED* Atrix 4G MOTO Replacement"

Recently a few weeks back i had messed with my "atrix" a little to much and ended up HARD BRICKING My device from reverting back 2.3.4 to 1.83 sbf file etc and i sent to Motorola and they send me a replacement unit.. Reason i'm posting is because apparently they replace if you have a hard-brick they did for me.
why is atrix in quotes?
Tell
What do u you tell them
I had the same thing happen and I told them that it screwed up doing the ota update.
They didnt see the software and how long did it take for them to send you a new one
They saw that it was updated to 2.3.4 but still sent me another phone. It took about 3 weeks to put it in the mail and get it back.
The fact u were the able to brick with all the warnings is astonishing. I worry less about moto honoring it as I do AT&T. AT&T looks for any reason is drop their end of agreements u pay for.

Isn't just a bunch of Hispanics in Mexico that repair the phones? I'm guessing they probably care less or really even know about all of that stuff.
Careful... warranty is notorious for putting "znrp" soc code on your account and next bill you will see $150 charge for equipment returned damaged. if they check it that is... seen it before at work... just saying.

Thinking about using insurance to get a better phone

So, I have Best Buy mobile insurance, which I pay 10bucks a month.
It's been almost a year, since I bought it with Epic 4g, so I was thinking about using 120$ I spent.
I just read the article about Nexus S 4g getting new 2.3.7 upgrade, so that flared me up a bit about using the insurance to get rid of Epic 4G.
I saw a lot of people few weeks back, whom had full bricks caused by a beta Bonsai rom. I know that those people went to Sprint stores and got new/refurb Epic 4G. Although I think this is 100% user's fault, some people got their new phones for free. So I am thinking about doing that similar thing.
I am trying to get that same rom, or similar and just brick my phone and bring it to BBM. The worst thing that could happen is getting the refurb epic. But I think even it's a refurb, it would still be good as new. This way I can resell epic as new, instead 1 yr old with scratches/wears.
What do you think? Is it just too evil??
I wouldn't rely on it...but if i was trying to brick my phone I'd just check clear bootloader in odin.
Oh really?
That simple to hard brick the phone?
I didn't know ODIN was that dangerous
Best Buy insurance gives you new phones. Usually takes 2-3 business days to get it and they take your old phone. You will either do without, use their loaner or reactivate an old phone. They pretty much don't care why your phone is broke.
Never realized xda supports insurance fraud, this thread should "probably" be closed... just sayin

Came here to say this. When I signed up for BB insurance, they said as long as you can bring it in they will replace it. It can be run over by a car and smashed to bits, no problem. But if it is lost or stolen then you're SOL. So yeah, if you want to get it replaced, why not just drop it in some water or toss it as high in the air as you can and watch it shatter on the cement? If you do that, please record it so we can all watch. hahaha

this is not insurance fraud. this is one thing insurance is actually for. if you break your device, wether it be in a fit of rage, or a pure accident, you pay a deductible, return the old equiptment, and get a new one. everybody wins including bestbuy on keeping your premium payments, their 3rd party insurer, who makes the deductible, you for getting a new phone, and the circle of insurance goes on.
No deductible with Best Buy.

even nicer. i guess thats why its 10 bucks instead of 8 like sprint. i was just saying, this is how indemnity companies make thier money. there is a formula, and they know what they are doing.
hey, i think the better thing about sprints insurance, even though there is a deductible, it covers lost and stolen.
Yes so that has to play into.your insurance decision...are you clumsy, a flash addict (brick), forgetful or in a bad neighborhood...lol.

they do aggressively tell you how to take advantage of it. they did went over it again for me when i bought my tab. "If you drop it in water, make sure you run over it with your car and bring as many parts of it as you can." "Uh, ok."
Insurance is the biggest fraud ever invented in our world.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
haha thanks for advices!
If "accident" happen soon, I will definitely use the insurance. But the process looks more daunting.
They also told me that no deductible / accidental damage coverage for the phone. But I did some more research and found that there is a small print, where they have to send my phone for repair. So it takes them at least 3weeks to decide if it is repairable or not. I think their deadline is 30 days, which after that I can be angry at them and they have to give me a new phone.
I found many experiences with BBM insurance is bad. Almost all of them had to do wait 3 weeks.
Although I have retired HTC Vogue, I don't know I would happy without Epic for a month...
haha

So let's say I'm tired of my car, I want a new one. So I torch the current car to the ground, and you're saying this is not fraud because this is what insurance is for?
They changed that. Sprint phones are now part of Rapid Exchange. They just order you a new phone. They were all set to order a new one for me for the PRL issue but the day I headed over there was the same day Sprint fixed the error in their network.

Talking about forcefully destroying a phone to exploit an insurance process IS insurance fraud. Saying you are going to "stick it to them" because they "stick it to you" is just as ridiculous... because, guess what. You willingly pay for a luxury item and you accept the charges they want to charge you.
Just like Kodeen said, insurance is NOT a future phone upgrade service, just like how car/home insurance is NOT a future car/home upgrade service. Just remember that if you start exploiting the system, you are part of the problem of rising insurance costs AND revisions of insurance policies. I just await the 1000 threads complaining about how horrible Sprint/Best Buy is because of insurance process changes.
But if you have no decency, I guess what do you care??

Yes. If he lies to make the insurance claim, then it's fraud.
If he goes into Best Buy, says he bricked his phone on purpose, and they're ok with that and give him a new one, then it's not fraud. Maybe they would be fine with it, and that would allow him to sleep at night knowing that he got a new phone honestly. If he says he was "clumsy" when he wasn't, or makes up any other untrue but somehow justified-in-his-own-mind claim, then he's lying and committing fraud.
Personally, I agree that $10/month is too much for insurance. That's why I chose not to get it. It's not like anyone makes you go to Best Buy to get their insurance.
playing by the rules is harder , u u d d l r l r b a b a select start makes life easier with the new hotness phone. Business don't go by morals but mear profit.
