Possible to fit new SDCARD without re-flashing? - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Have flashed my HD2 with the latest Yuki/Xbox mango ROM (great jobs guys BTW).
Long story short, it's running with my 2gb Sandisk SDCARD, and works well.
Is there any way to change the SDCARD to my 32gb class 2 sandisk without having to totally wipe the phone and start again?

long answer - YES - but you need to do a hard reset and allow the phone to boot with the new SD card.
you will have to reconfigure all your settings etc, but will still be at 7720 (or whatever your at right now).
Be warned though that you stand the risk that the SD card might not be compatible... only trying it will tell you if it is or not...

Yes i did actually, the previous implication by starting again was to start loading the whole ROM from the beginning... I am simply pointing out that you don't need to start fro scratch....
So no, it's wasn't a random post, although i must say that's what yours appears to be....

ha, your right, on your first post i mean, i suppose its down to individual Interpretation of the question, to me, if i setup a device then "wipe" it, its akin to a hard reset which is what your suggesting but you would lose all user customisation, which was my take on the question.
2 sides, same coin

Thanks for all the replies =)
I guess I wasn't crystal clear in my original post - sorry for that
But I meant without having to re-flash the ROM. Don't mind reconfiguring the phone but having to re-flash the Yuki/Xbox mango ROM each time would be a PITA because it takes so long.
So looks like it is possible to fit a new SDCARD in the HD2 with WP7 Mango if a hard reset it done. But I might add for completeness from what I've discovered is that it will only work if the new card is 'liked' by WP7.
Trying to fit a card that WP7 doesn't want to play with will cause WP7 to burp during boot telling you that the storage card wasn't recognised. first few times I got that message I did a whole ROM re-flash to no avail.

[Solved] Reboot WP7 auto hard resets....

So after I flashed WP7, everything works fine. But whenever I turn off the phone (long press end call key) and open it again the next day. All my settings are gone (i.e. Hard reset without me doing anything). Also same thing happens when I change my regional settings and click that link to reboot my phone. Why is this? Hope someone can helpme out.
EDIT:
EVERYTHING IS WORKING. Data is saved after reboots.
Steps:
1. Flash WP7 like usual WITH SD card inserted
2. Wait for WP7 to load up.
3. Physically REMOVE SD card from phone.
4. Restart phone
5. When phone is booting up (white HTC screen). Put back in the SD card
6. You should then see the WP7 setup screen.
I hope this helps out other people who had similar problems with stock hd2 2GB SD card.

sorry for the stupid q, but do you have an sd-card inserted into your phone? cause it seems like you don't. wp7 uses sd card for some off system files.

i bet its not compatible, this sounds like the shipped 2gb card and i had the same problems like many others with the shipped sd card
-> have you got the first start steps?
i think no
remove your sd card, go to settings, info and reset your phone
after this everything will work (until your storage is gone)

[Q] Dev for ability to flash from SD card?

Hi guys, sorry if this is a dumb question but havent had my coffee yet.
Im just wondering if anybody knew of any development going on to be able to flash WP7 from SD crad via MAGLDR?
I think this owuld be a great addition.
I'm at work at the moment and was going to flash WP7 as im bored and realised I didnt bring my USB cable
Since WP7 format your SD during installation process, I think it's impossible ^^

Yeah, the way wp7 uses the sd card would make it very difficult to find a way to make it work.... there's probably a better chance of them figuring out a way to boot wp7 directly from SD (which given the fact that wp7 uses the sd as main memory anyways, performance would probably be the same with a good sd card if the figured out how to do this.... I would love to have android on NAND so I can use clockwork, but I don't want to give up the ability to boot wp7... especially after reading about the multitasking ability that is going to be added with an update... their doing multitasking like WebOS did it, with playing card looking screens that you can scroll through... it looks great)
Not really true.
WP7 only formats your card if it hasnt already been formatted. When ive been trying/testing dual boot in past, I had a pre-formatted WP7 card with WP7 partitions already on and after flashing it didnt format. Well unless im not remembering correctly and dreamt it.
So its probably just a matter of magldr support for it. Unless its a limitation of only been able to perform the partitioing via PC-DFT/USB-MAGLDR flasher.
I do agree though, the coming possibility of running WP7 from SD would be great. Its bit like when we first got Android (me back on Blackstone), ie have your secondary OS on card and primary on NAND. I slowly started to use Android more and more and then just started booting into it by default either manually or via bootloader, then eventually on NAND. I cant see myself getting rid of Android for WP7 any time soon but it would be cool to be able to play with it without having to resort to putting Android back on card.

Furthermore it's clearly stated in most of cooked roms and installation tutos topics

Fook knows then, Im sure I managed to use a pre-prepared card without it flashing it at some point, Ill have a go later and see if I can replicate what I did.
Anyway, this doesnt really make a difference because im sure somebody could come up with a modded version that bypasses SD format/check etc.
Will just have to wait and see.
IMO flashing without formatting would be awesome especially to avoid reinstalling apps and reconfigurating system everytime :/
Let's be patient...

hmm, odd, not sure but perhaps an SD card issue?
those seem to be the root course for most issues perhaps this is another one! get a different SD card and give that aa shot, dont spend money you dont have because there is a chance that card might not work either! so if you have one kicking about give that a shot...just a thought, it might not be it but its worth a shot.
thanks but I think SD isn't a problem. It worked well for almost a month.

Not saying you are wrong, bit maybe you should consider the fact that it could be your SD card. WP7Cdoes this weird format called RAID to hour SD cardcthe first time you boot it up. This allows WP7 to use the SD card as the internal memory for the phone. This is the same of a native WP7 device, yes they use SD cards for internal memory all of the current ones do. Anyway this format is bad enough on a SD card, but you add the fact that it is constantly being read from and wrote to. This can kill a already overly used SD card, or a cheap sub are SD card.
His right, don't rule it out until you can rule it out! SD issues are huge and can attack at any moment, my own experience is that if I delete some music, approx 200mb it allows windows to use a certain portion of the card for system usage, it will crash and restart, didn't get this for months until I filled up the card to the point windows wanted to access that space, filling it past that space corrected the problem oh an my computer can't detect any issues with the card so its nit a case of being faulty, its a case of not meeting the spec needed for wp7 on that portion of my card
But problem is that it heppened after I installed WP7 even if I changed it for Android.
I'm sorry I forgot to mention that the last time it heppened I was usnig android NAND.

quite a significant oversight not mentioning Android does it as well!
lol
ok, well i suggest you flash back to a official standard WM6.5 ROM, that will erase the HSPL/SPL and MAGLDR, if its still happening then its going to be a hardware issue with your phone.

Only flashing a official Windows Mobile ROM by SD will revert HSPL back to SPL. If you flash via RUU you will have to use HSPL 4 to revert back to SPL.

1) I've read other's who have had a similar problem. Search the forums. I believe it has something with residuals from previous ROMs. Try task29 before flashing.
2) Seriously asking this???? You use Zune to put content on to your phone! WP7 works through Zune. Have you not read any of the "how-to install WP7" write-ups and the requirements for syncing with your PC?
It isn't any different from what you did with WM6.5, just a different interface.

I didn't look at the links, but it basically has to do with how WP7 formats your SD card. It can be reformatted in a way that reflects the size of the card. I can provide you with more help if you'd like.

ah yes, sorry bit of an assumption made there! you will need to hard reset and install again, or reflash, its up to you, on the positive side, with only 200mb storage you'll not have lost much. your activation code if you have one should still work

The Hd7 will become king of the hill once they crack it wide open, theres little difference between the two of them but the HD7 with its more vibrant screen does look a bit better. I still long for the day someone can get WM booting of an SD card, via magldr that is. however in saying all of that, dispite the HD2s drawbacks i still think it has the edge at the moment, purely because there is little that wont work with it, but least you gave it a shot. Good luck with the HD7

i guess thats one of the issues that has to be dealt with then using an os not designated for the device, there will always be quirks and issues
well if you would have read what your doing when installing windows phone 7 you would have known that this happens.
windows phone 7 doesn't support sd cards, thats why the card is formatted when installing it and you have only 200mb left. the rest of the card is in wp7s discformat and you can use it as your internal storage.
so when you farmatted your sd card to get back your 16gb as fat partition you deleted system files of wp7 that were on the card. that's why this error occured.
if you would read the instructions in the rom threads and the stickies you would have known all this. everything is clear and easy when you inform yourself before starting with something and there are a lot of threads explaining everything in detail.

SD card isn't recognized.

After attempting to follow the confusing steps in the xbmod-yuki rom my phone froze mid-update and my sd card spazzed out and now my phone says there is no sd in the slot when its in there....I can't connect to computer either.
SD Formatter can't even detect it.

Sorry, yes. I installed WP7 Mango (XBmod-Yuki rom V2), SD card was formatted and locked. I removed WP7 without knowing this would happen, and now I can't get the card to be recognized in Windows, Linux, OSX, or any of my other devices that support MicroSD. Been searching for a fix, but it looks like I'll need to find a Symbian device to format the card.
After I posted before, I was able to reinstall the original WP7 rom and the card was recognized after a hard reset, but I'm not having any luck getting the unlock cab to work. Actually, now, after trying to send the cab to my device, restarting with the card in the phone or doing a hard reset results in the phone just not loading the OS.
Sorry for being long winded, but I'm just about out of ideas. Thanks for any help

The way I fixed that is an aweful thing to do, but it worked.
1. Flash to stock Windows Mobile 6.5 (with locked SDcard in there)
2. Task29
3. Install MAGLDR
4. FLASH WP7 (still, with that same SDcard in there)
After it's flashed, do not update, but take the card out and stick it in a card reader (hell, even the magldr >> usb storage function works).
Windows will detect 200 MB on that card. Format it with SDformatter and it will be good again.
Note: That specific card is not compatible with WP7 MANGO, so don't try to use that ever again ;-)
It took me a week to figure this out, but i successfully managed to revive my 8GB Sandisk Class 4 card, which I now will use in my camera instead of the HD2
Hope this helps!
AWESOME!

I'm going to try this, but I'm wondering which WP7 Rom you flashed. I originally was using the Yuki Update rom, then once all the badness happened, I flashed to a much older one, then back to Yuki. However, in each of those cases, I never got the 200MB partition. Anyway, I'm giving this a shot, will let you know. Thanks!

Hey again all,
It's possible there's something else wrong with my card at this point. I tried Krewsia1nl's method and it seemed like it might work, but I still never got any additional partitions that my PC could recognize. I tried it a couple of times, 12st with an older WP7 rom I found in the HD2 WP7 dev section, and 2nd with the original Yuki rom I was flashing. Same issue in both cases.
What I did find is that I can see the card in the Yuki rom after flashing, BUT if I restart the device, it freezes, I have to remove the card to be able to boot it, and when it reboots, it tells me I must insert the card to continue. Great...
This also poses a problem with unlocking the card in WP7 with the unlock or partition cabs. To install them, the cab sender restarts your device. Once that happens, my phone freezes and I have to remove the card. All subsequent attempts to reboot or reinsert the card are met with either nothing recognized, or an error (It's also important to note that I can only see the card on first boot after following Krewsia1nl's method-if I try to hard reset with the card in, the phone just keeps freezing).
So, for now, that's where I'm at. I'm going to try the UBCD Killdisk method and I'll report whether or not that works, in case anyone finds themselves in this particular, sinking boat. Killdisk Method is here:

Thanks again for your help, all. Love XDA <3
Killdisk didn't work either. Guessing my card is fried, but I'll still try a Nokia if I can find one.
I also tried to install Yukis Mango 7720 but not with good result.
Does this 7720 work in any HD2...
Ubuntu doesn't do anything if you add your WP7 SD card to reader.
Win7 shows that you have "Removable Disk" but if you try to access it Windows says "unable something....".
I thought that I have also two fried SD card because this 7720 testing.
But Nokia E51 format successfully both cards )
i have an old Nokia 3650 and a few cards that mango has ruined. Now if I can just find the plug for the nokia......wonder if it will format them ?
Just got my 32 class 4 SanDisk in the mail. How do I release the card in tmous hd2 and add 32 to set up dual boot droid. Reflash from start.... Awww lawd! Took all night! Can I hard rest with no card and do it with cabssnder to partition card and card unlock and party with rum tonite?
Sent from my HD2 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Btway.... Xda devs and forum participants could teach the worldwide manufacturers a thing or two about the way it's done. Thanks to all.

Can you tell me what SD Card did you manage to unlock?
I tried an E63 for my Sandisk Class 4 32Go unsuccessfully
What an absolute disaster the BTTF Yuki rom is...It is inevitable, most will lose their sd cards, it cost me $45 to replace. Could we put a BIG warning up for these roms, GUARANTEED to destroy your SD card? Because it will, at some point for sure, you will reload the rom and that's when the fun starts..AVOID AT ALL (cough) Costs...

You are completely entitled to your opinion and to post it here.
Many people have successfully upgraded to Mango and have not posted here at all.

I'm sorry, did not intend to knock the rom, the rom is excellent, the concern, it will ultimately cause you much duress as to the sd card at some point, that's my only point. Not many folk expect to lose the sd card after installing... and reinstalling...yes, there are work arounds, but, they entail, much ado and worst case, nokia.kodaj devices...there should be a MASSIVE warning as to SD card...yes, the small print offers cabs and tinkering to avoid the 'lock', but most of us don't expect any such chicanery.-)
