I saw this on another thread but nobody had answered the question. I checked my bootloader and it says my device name is Herring not crespo what's the difference?
[Edit] I have been running all the rom's that say crespo 4g and have had no issue
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Wow! Never noticed that. I've had my nexus s 4g sence lanch. My bootloader also says Herring. My guess Samsung or google use this code name to differ between the cdma/wimax and gsm versions.

Definately the most logical answer because if you look everywhere the ns4g is referred to as crespo 4g I noticed it when I saw it in another thread. I've had no issues thus far though. When I saw it I had to turn my Phone off and load bootloader to check lol

All nexus s models say herring there.

My guess is "herring" is the name of the board used in Nexus S and "crespo" is the codename of the phone used by Samsung.

Yes - the crespo is the GSM version, crespo4g is the CDMA device for Sprint.

The board used.
Edit for clarification since this seems to be a rather unknown concept: The board and the device code name for builds are different entities with different uses. The board definition is what you will use for your defconfig to compile the kernel. The code name will reference all of the specific build parameters when building a full AOSP rom.
Nexus S
Board: Herring
Code Name: crespo (GSM) crespo4g (CDMA)
Nexus One
Board: mahimahi
Code Name: Passion (GSM)

Be sure to check out the BLN app. BLN Pro. I believe there is a free version as well.
Stock MMS I think may require an app or modded MMS to use BLN. It does on the GS II I believe.

Don't be so quick to discount what the community is able to do. However, the kernel source may be needed to get it working properly on our hardware. I'd just say don't hold your breathe for it, it can be a lot of work to port code, just look at cm6.

Same, I don't see too much to complain about on stock. It's light, responsive and fairly stable. I'll root it eventually of course though. I'm sure there are too many under-the-hood options that I'll be dying without before long
My only complaint seems to be random data drop outs. Is that a known issue or wtf is going on lol

Have you actually looked? I mean...if you can be bothered to figure out how to root your phone, surely you can quickly peruse the Nexus S forums for the tons of information on the ICS roms currently available.

Koush has a rom, no 4g yet, also has a twitter with less ICS related posts
Drew Garen has a rom, for NS3g, drewgaren.com (his also includes soft buttons)
beezy kickstarted it all with this rom over at androidcentral only for the 4g
kwiboo has version 2 out. nexus s 3g and 4g supported, reported wifi issues when wifi disconnects, it's recomended to use v1 for now. v2 has updated music app with some hardware acceleration
