Correct me if I'm wrong but if your the main line on the account you can upgrade after like 15 months or something. I've been eligible for nearly half a year and I got my dInc about a week or two after it came out. If you aren't the main line disregard this.

Well my upgrade is in January, but this might be my phone of choice. I would prefer an HTC, but Samsung would be second in line, especially if it's ICS.
I assume this is the Nexus Prime then?
Oh man I have an upgrade in March. Really wish I could figure out something to get an early upgrade. Gotta talk to my Verizon buddies haha

I'm virtually 100% sure you're wrong on that. I watch these things like a hawk because I'm always shuffling phones around. I usually get a new phone every 10 to 12 months, but more frequently when before I went Android. Been doing that for years now.

Basically, it sounds like the device is coming to Verizon, but it doesn't seem like it will be a "Droid" branded device.

Actually, they have different model numbers, so this might be verizons prime variant (a la droid incredible) for the nexus prime (nexus one).

time to negotiate with verizon reps so i can get early upgrade.... i dont wanna wait until january
Looks like there will be a Nexus variant headed to Verizon (Droid Prime?) and an actual branded Nexus headed elsewhere. Hmmm...

i said i'll stick to HTC and sense. i don't like the stock android look. i don't like motoblur, i don't like what samsung puts over it, and i don't like the stock google look. i enjoy sense the most. therefore, i wouldn't go for the samsung, i'd go for the vigor.
I just learned that the primary line on my account has an annual upgrade left over from the old system and I can upgrade whenever!

His join date is also a few years before Android phones even came out, so my guess is he could be rocking any number of phones. Not everybody on the XDA forums posts in the one they own in particular. It could have just been a Gingerbread curiosity in general and it came up in a search.

That would make sense (no pun intended ). After all the two new flagship products by Sprint are the Nexus S and EVO 3D so they'll want to push Gingerbread as a feature on those phones before they upgrade the Shift. I doubt they'll update the original EVO though. But in the mean time there's always CM7 and the other 3rd party Gingerbread ROMs. :3

I'm pretty sure the EVO 3D will become the new flagship product when its released this summer and over shadow the popularity of the original EVO. Even if the whole 3D thing doesn't take off its still a superior design and you can bet Sprint will be pushing that fact.

I'm pretty sure the Shift will get the next update or 2 as it came out recently. The EVO has been around a while though and the EVO 3D looks as if its been purposely designed to be the original EVO's successor. From a business standpoint it doesn't make sense to continue long-term support for a device that has been replaced. Its with that in mind that I say I doubt the EVO will get Gingerbread.

ICS is supposed to be a type of "universal" update that brings all devices under one platform to unify android instead of being fragmented the way it is. I was doubtful that the sgs4g would get it but after reading up on it it does appear hopeful that devices like ours will get the update as well.

Officially? I'm almost certain that's a no. Took them 6 months to give us GB and this phone is about to hit it's end of life cycle.
But unofficially, most certainly. Kmobs and Zinx have this phone, the two prominent devs in the CM team. So I'm highly confident that through them, we'll be amongst the first batch of phones to get ICS via CM8.
Just my thought.

Not sure about that because to me, T-Mobile has the worst track record of phones getting updates.
The myTouch Slide 3G was promised Froyo last summer but didn't get it till earlier this year. And you can pretty much throw GB out of the equation for that phone.
The Vibrant has yet to even have a GB leak while the Vibrant 4G gets GB leaks every month or so. Which is sad.
The G2 was supposed to get GB very early but are now just getting it. And its life cycle already ended a month or two ago so that getting ICS is doubtful.
And that's just to name a few.

You would think the company that first introduced Android to the world, would set an example for everyone else on how to update your Android's in a timely manner. Instead they are usually the last ones to do so or they'll release a new version of the phone that is updated, an scrap the older ones. The only reason why i'm still with then is,i have good connection at home an in my area, an I don't want to spend the extra money for a etf.

From what I was told (by a German TMO sales rep), they have a fairly long internal QA process to make sure that a new ROM works (together with any of their own additions). So it usually takes them more than six months after a new ROM has been released, before it is officially available from them. This is not only true for Android, but is also valid for Blackberry and WP7.
FWIW... We switched to sprint. Hated sprint cdma. And t mobile is hardly the worst track record, all the carriers have been about the same. I think verizon and the droid line up is your"worst"...

I can understand a 6month time frame to get everything working. I had the mytouch 3g slide, an that took a year an a month(not sure, maybe 2) to get upgraded to 2.2, they didn't even do an ota. It was either do it yourself via HTC or go to a store an get it done. I think that's pretty bad though, it took them that long.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.
Yeah... I don't see why they need at least 6 months. I mean it took CM's team like a little over a month after GB's source was released to get it to multiple different phones. Plus CM implemented their CM Settings as well.
I'm not saying it's a wrong statement, just wondering how a group of mostly college kids can beat big companies to it.

I say when they get ready to launch LTE. Although, I would like to see an HTC version of the Samsung Galaxy Note. Not really into the whole stylus, nor 3D. I just want bigger, faster, more memory. Want to get fancy, include a optical, non-digital zoom for the camera.
I think ICS will make my decision for me. IF the OG EVO can get an AOSP ICS build (with or without WiMAX) I'm going to keep it until I see how Sprint's LTE rollout goes. I'm gonna tide myself over with a Windows 8 tablet when they launch...

EVO was easily replaceable as there are plenty of high end slate styled phones on Sprint. Epic on the other hand fills a niche. Honestly, I've noticed a lot of Epic users out in the wild lately. I used to never see anyone else with my phone and now it's been every place I go I seem to see another person with an Epic. Even at a year and a half old, it holds it own and even bests a lot of the newer mid-range phones out there.
To the novice consumer the Epic is the cheaper keyboarded style galaxy s2. The Og Epic never got much advertisement, but since the Epic Touch has a lot of people head in to check it out, see the Og Epic, are like "oh cool it's the same phone with a keyboard and cheaper" and bam, it becomes more popular then when it was released.

Would be nice since im stuck with this phone for another year. Really wondering if its worth canceling now and jumping on the bandwagon of the nexus.

I am sort of in the same boat. In spite of SERO, opening a line in a family VZW account would cost about the same or less and I never go beyond 3GB of data use (that with double data promotion). Went to VZW store, played with the Nexus, but despite being well aware of specs, updates, ICS etc just did not feel that it was that much better than what I already have. Also, realized that I will really miss my KB, and the dev community is still in its infancy for Nexus @XDA.

gotta agree with kenny on ^^^ this ^^^ ... prolly better 2 just wait
A lot of my friends had gotten Epics and I was the sore thumb who went out and got an Evo Shift back last April. That phone went kaput on me and I decided to hop on the epic-wagon after using other ones first hand. I won't ever get a non keyboard phone, and the epic is the best of its class...Its the ONLY one of its class now. Sprint has no plans to release any other keyboard phones yet, which is highly disappointing. We might see one when LTE comes around, but...in the mean time, I'm happy that the Epic has such an awesome team of devs here (Things over in the evo shift forum really started to die!).
Long story short: Long live the epic.
I think the possibility of us getting ics is pretty good actually. It used to seem out of reach but now the hyped nexus update has been halted and Sammy is posting new rdf files, not to mention the increasing amount of epic buyers lately. If you ask me, I think the probability of us getting ics is higher than many think. Our phone will easily support it.

Especially since our devs started the work for them and got mtd working.

I think they'll still use bml on ics, so that won't help them.
Edit:samsung, not our devs.

This will keep me around the epic for a little while longer
