Don't count us out yet for ics. - Epic 4G General

"After reviewing various factors such as system requirements, platform
limitations, and partner-related issues, we will consider upgrading Galaxy devices
to Ice Cream Sandwich. Specific upgrade plans will be communicated separately.
Samsung will stay committed to responsibility for its customers as much as
possible."
That was in response to the nexus s-comparable devices getting ics question.

ICS? For us? I know there's no guarantee but OH MY GAWRSH

Since we aren't on any type of EOL list I'm sure there could be a very good possibility, especially since our stock ei22 kernel is a heavily modified nexus kernel IIRC

You're completely right, just we don't use many things the same way unfortunately. But it's a positive nonetheless.

Its weird that we haven't been EOL yet. But I think I see why, a lot of my friends have been picking up the Epic for the cheap $99. Although one friend got the Stratosphere, which I'm jealous of, that phone is nice.

I honestly don't think we'll get ics. But if we do, it won't be till jelly bean comes out. Samsung has a tendency to repeat itself

EVO was easily replaceable as there are plenty of high end slate styled phones on Sprint. Epic on the other hand fills a niche. Honestly, I've noticed a lot of Epic users out in the wild lately. I used to never see anyone else with my phone and now it's been every place I go I seem to see another person with an Epic. Even at a year and a half old, it holds it own and even bests a lot of the newer mid-range phones out there.

To the novice consumer the Epic is the cheaper keyboarded style galaxy s2. The Og Epic never got much advertisement, but since the Epic Touch has a lot of people head in to check it out, see the Og Epic, are like "oh cool it's the same phone with a keyboard and cheaper" and bam, it becomes more popular then when it was released.

I am sort of in the same boat. In spite of SERO, opening a line in a family VZW account would cost about the same or less and I never go beyond 3GB of data use (that with double data promotion). Went to VZW store, played with the Nexus, but despite being well aware of specs, updates, ICS etc just did not feel that it was that much better than what I already have. Also, realized that I will really miss my KB, and the dev community is still in its infancy for Nexus @XDA.

A lot of my friends had gotten Epics and I was the sore thumb who went out and got an Evo Shift back last April. That phone went kaput on me and I decided to hop on the epic-wagon after using other ones first hand. I won't ever get a non keyboard phone, and the epic is the best of its class...Its the ONLY one of its class now. Sprint has no plans to release any other keyboard phones yet, which is highly disappointing. We might see one when LTE comes around, but...in the mean time, I'm happy that the Epic has such an awesome team of devs here (Things over in the evo shift forum really started to die!).
Long story short: Long live the epic.

I think the possibility of us getting ics is pretty good actually. It used to seem out of reach but now the hyped nexus update has been halted and Sammy is posting new rdf files, not to mention the increasing amount of epic buyers lately. If you ask me, I think the probability of us getting ics is higher than many think. Our phone will easily support it.

Most exciting phone at ces

I didn't follow CES as much as I wanted to so I'm wondering in your opinions what is the most exciting phone coming in 2011? I just saw specs for the atrix and I'm impressed. I hate at&t but when it cones out on March I might have to go with it. I didn't see where sprint was getting anything. Anybody jumping on the attic in March? Thanks for the responses.

sprint didnt really announce anything but there is a conference from Sprint at the begining of next month with another "industry first". so well see
Yea its a 1.2GHz triple core HTC Device running 2.4 and 2 1080 cameras that also works on sprints "industry first" 5 G network ......and YES u can F*ck iT.
Who cares about phones?
Sprint is getting David Blaine at this Febuary event... David Blaine !!! Lol
Maybe they got him cause only magic will get froyo on our phones.

And yeah the atrix is pretty much what I expected the Nexus S to be. Gingerbread had no business being released on a rehashed galaxy s. They shoulda just pushed gingerbread to all n1 owners (which was the point of getting that phone in the first place.) And then got 2.4 out on the NS or whatever nexus it would've been if they would've waited. Perhaps a "Nexus Duo" or something since they didn't want a nexus 2

Yeah, the Nexus S is gonna be a complete and udderly waste of google's time with the outs of the dual core phones with HDMI and an actual SD card slot. Not sure what google was thinking with the Nexus S, but I'm thinking they didn't want developers ****ing with their hardware with those kind of restrictions.

I wasn't aware that the numbers were this low. I would think that this would be something that Google would be concerned with because eventually this could hurt the growth of Android. Marketing is a powerful thing and if Apple and Microsoft are in some way able to get into the heads of the masses. You know how powerful marketing can be even when it's just trying to spread FUD. The company that I work for has BB as the "corporate standard" but because we purchased several other companies in the past year that standard has been loosened a bit because of the high number of iPhone users at the other company. There are only two of us in the IT Department that have Android and with what I see going on I still don't feel comfortable pushing Android. The first time there was an issue I know that my CIO would use it as the reason why we shouldn't use Android and that would be the end of that.

The devotion that Google has to the Nexus brand makes anything the Epic went thru irrelevant. I would definitely get the Nexus S 4G if it came to Sprint. I'm not concerned with dual core seeing as how my Epic runs blazing and handles games amazingly. It suits my needs just fine. But I might consider the Evo successor as well.

Id switch if I could do it cheaply. I am a year in almost of the 2 year with my Epic. If I could upgrade for like a hundred dollars I would in a heartbeat. Not paying 600 or more for this phone though out of pocket.
Hm there might be two variants of the gs2 one with sammys processor and the other with the tegra 2, any chance they hit the drawing board again with the "epic 2" in mind as one of those variants? Considering someone did a device search and came back with "D710" ?

check out my recent post from an old thread
I'm not quite at my 12 month point yet and got an early upgrade 'scheduled' for when i hit that mark..
now the new phone might be "WiThin" reach (pun intended)
WiThin will not have Tegra! It has Mali GPU and Tegra phones have GeForce GPU. I guess that means SPH-D710 is WiThin. Amazing that on Nenamark, the top 8 phones are GSII. BTW here's the link
http://nena.se/nenamark/view?version=2&device_id=593
It's SPH so it's definitely sprint and it's got Mali so its probably the GSII and performs like the other ones do on the test. Also, it got WIFI certified in May if that means anything.

I know this post is off topic, but I've read a lot of Epic owners who are contemplating an upgrade to the new Epic Touch 4G and I know a lot of you guys are holding out for a new superphone with a keyboard. I figured this might help you make a decision when it comes time to upgrade from the Epic.

I think the Verizon Droid Prime will be the one that has the keyboard. tfleming223 said that the "one" with the keyboard is the one that I prefer, thus if he's right only one of the Nexus Primes will have a keyboard. I speculate that Verizon's Nexus Prime will have a keyboard (if they don't get two versions) because the phone is being dubbed "Droid Nexus Prime" and the first (Verizon) Droid, which put Android on the map, had a built-in keyboard and it was hugely successful as some Droid 1 owners proudly rock it till this day.

For whatever reason, I had figured Sprint would be the one with the keyboard, but you raise a very valid point here in which 'Droid' is in the name, and they've had keyboards.
I think the deal about Verizon getting it first is pretty much fact and beyond rumor at this point in time, so how long do we think they'll get exclusivity on the phone? A few weeks? A month? Or will they just get the 'Droid' Prime while the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (or whatever it will be called) and they come out at the same time?

Yeah, I too would seriously consider switching. I have been a Sprint customer for more than 10 years, but with the end of the Premier program and my contract up for renewal in October, I would really consider it. People on Verizon at work get much better signal than I do on Sprint and just that fact seems to kill my battery life.

Why has the Epic not been EOL'd like the EVO?

Not understanding why Sammy doesn't just EOL the Epic. We already have the next gen out in the wild. And I'm thinking more and more each day that we will never even see 'official' Gingerbread.
Tired of having to keep checking here to see if official 2.3.4 is here and it never is and I crawl back in my hole and cry myself to sleep.
Don't know why I even care, my next phone won't be until the Galaxy S III hits the US. Flame away I guess.
Maybe because the epic touch was released after the evo 3d?

My theory is that this phone has a lot left in it. For a phone still running Froyo it can still hold its own against Gingerbread phones. This was one of the few Froyo phones to get skype video chat support (even though we can't use the ffc). This phone is. Damn good phone and now with LTE coming mid-2012 no one will want to give it up. Most people with an Evo have moved on to a new phone, Epic owners are still holding on. Plus compared to the Evo Shift this is the best andrid phone with a keyboard and no telling if there will be another. Just my thoughts

EOL was supposed to be October but at the bottom of the EOL it said *these dates are subject to change
Obviously they changed for the epic.
Probably because there aren't a lot of high end Android phones with a physical keyboard on Sprint, while there are plenty of ones without. It fills a niche. The EVO doesn't.
I hope this mean they will keep the epic 4g as a mid-range phone and extend its life all throughout 2012.

That article is from July. It could still happen but they changed their plans already...

With the top saying dates subject to chance. Apparently people don't read things in their entirety and just what they want to see.
revol.epic said:
ok you read into it that the chance meant the epic what about the chance meaning one of the other phones like the evo 4g? bottom line is that sprint did announce the end of life epic 4g which is what i said and that they listed it as october which is true. so i did report it correctly and sprint has not said anything to the contrary about it either, so oct is it...

Outdated list, sprint Has removed it from the list since then. Of course they announced it, but "subject to change" which it has. Here you go.

ok but i still stand by the fact that it was announced. however just because it was not on the other list does not mean anything. It could be that since it was announced no need to state it again or that perhaps sprint is only giving it a month or so longer as verizon is getting the epic 4g 2 (now not apart of the galaxy s series) so we also know that sprint is getting a version as well also not a gs2 or gs.

Actually they do need to restate them hence the EVO still being there. And the Stratosphere is going to be a galaxy s line phone, and sprint is not getting one.

Why would they list the EVO twice if that was the case? Back in July and recent. I understand where you're coming from but this absolutist end of the Epic mood you put into your posts is unneeded. There is no point in complaining, it's a phone, we're on Android. The OS and the phones move so fast that top of the line is end of the line in a matter of days to be figurative. It's not end of line at the moment. It will be but not now.

I know some were hoping for EOL so they could time their insurance fraud properly to get an upgrade instead of a replacement Epic.

Exactly. There isn't a phone that has replaced it yet. I require a physical keyboard for my day to day use of my phone. I have tried to go virtual keyboard and just can't do it. Kind of hard to type shell commands in with virtual keyboard without the frustration of wanting to throw the phone out the window kicking in.

The EVO is a piece of crap and the Epic is Epic.
I believe the Epic is Epic and the EVO is dull.
Even if it does get EOL'd...our development here will keep this phone on the map for a LONG time in my opinion!!

if we ever get gingerbread. i think their maybe a newer secret built that we dont know about. i am flashed to revol with working internet and text but mms is no go... tried it with gingerbread and ec05.... but the reason i switched is because of end of life stigma. but lets face it many devs have switched to newer duel core phones and the dev community for epic was good considering we had nowhere near the evo 4g community but people are moving on.

Yeah, I know some have moved on, but even without GB source right now, we still have some awesome folks out here STILL making improvements to EC05...when GB source gets here, I believe (hopefully) we will see the return of a few. I think this phone will be around for a long time! All my opinion of course ....

I still think it's a great phone. It does everything I need and I even run my business from it. I remember when the only way to update your OS was to by a new phone or hack it. So I'm not really worried about GB. I can't miss what I never had. Just my $.02
