Hi guys, I've been playing around with different kinds of RAM tweaks(scripts and apps available here in xda and in the market) for a couple of weeks now.
Then a couple of days ago, I finally decided not to use any.
Personally, I think my phone is more snappy, letting android system manage its RAM.
Considering I have around 100 user apps now, the phone is surprisingly still very snappy.
This is what I noticed on android RAM management, when needed more RAM for certain apps(let's say games), android will kill those inactive apps giving some more RAM for the one app you are currently using. Even those persistent apps(like mails, messengers, etc) will be killed to free-up some more RAM.
So I guess with our phone's caliber/specs and current OS version, we almost don't need those RAM tweaks around, same goes with those task killers.
My phone's current settings using doomlord's kernel:
launcher - go launcher(with only few widgets, less than 10)
i/o scheduler - deadline(system default)
cpu governor - ondemand(system default)
CPU min/max frequency - 245MHz/1.3GHz
app2sd - ext3 partition ~900MB(all user apps located here - 160MB used of the total 900MB)
but my dalvik cache still resides in internal memory - 170MB used of the total 380MB
Note that the above is the same settings I used when I was observing my phone with and without RAM tweaks.
So guys please share your experiences on RAM tweaks if it's effective or not on your current setup.
I have to agree, the old android you did need all that tweaking, but I do believe now you don't, just have to give time, the first day I got my arc I wanted to throw it in the Wall! It was the worst phone! But after one update it was 80% better, now with the latest firmware update another 20% and hopefully the next update will even be more better, I just wish that there was more memory

I'm using the V6 Supercharger. It's more or less a tweak for the default Android RAM management system. I kinda like it. While it does make the phone appear slightly less smooth in some rare cases, in general everything is more consistent. No more 4-second waits before the Messaging or Contacts app opens etc. Aside that I don't feel I need anything at all.
Stock firmware, stock kernel (never bootloader unlocked), rooted and Supercharged. 4.0 software!
Yup, I also thought that the default phone and messaging apps are quite slow so I replaced it with touchpal and gosms. Definitely for some default apps, it's better to use 3rd party available from the market.
Btw, I also tried supercharger before but I realized it is not suitable for my usage as I always have more than 32MB of ram(32MB is the default android threshold setting before it starts killing those dormant/inactive apps). The script is very customizable though so it might help those heavy multitaskers.

I get about 185 on virtuous. People complain about sense being a mem hog, but coming from a G1, struggling to keep 20 mb free, even having 100 mb free seems pretty luxurious.
MIUI let me have about 230 mb free at any time, but if I ignored the numbers, I actually didn't really notice any difference in performance. In fact, my average mflops and quadrant scores were still better in virtuous running the same setCPU profiles. I know that's kind of a kernel thing, but still, just goes to show that virtuous is no slouch, even if it uses a lot more memory.
Just my personal experience.

I have 233mb free running CM7 Build #11. I haven't killed all tasks though, just running as normal.

really good point.
when running normal apps (messaging, internet, settings, random ish) I have ~100, if i kill everything i get 175, but that actually doesnt help performance, because next time i open messaging, it takes a few seconds to load back up because it isn't in RAM.
I'm running virtuous and OC'd to 1.49 and it runs perfectly smooth with 100mb free. I can even keep a game like angry birds running in the background without it affecting system performance at all.
on phones that only have 20-30mb free, opening something new can cause slowdowns, but for my G2, there's no need at all to force close things that are sitting nicely in the background.
I have rooted my Asus TF, Put on the H 3.1 os, used Clemsyn Blades kernel, running very nicely. I have rooted it, and uninstalled crap like facebook, books, splashtop etc...lot of useless bloatware is out...However here is the problem........LOW MEMORY....This machine has ram of 1GB, and only 800mb shows, so almost 200 for the GI, and out of that 800, about 400mb is always used, despite using various app killers, I think we should be able to get it to about 200mb used? anyone know where so much of ram is bieng eaten
My question to you great knowledgeable friends is;
1) how to get rid of more useless apps eating memory
2) does using a different launcher reduce ram eating?
3) is it possible to achieve about 200-300mb consistent ram?
This is an awsome machine, I think more tweks we can make is super. I have a Samsung GS2, I have removed most of the stock stuff on it and set up my ownlauncher etc. It runs with amazing memory, 500mb free, and awsome graphics interface. Less nonsense.

If you haven't done so already you could use Titanium Backup to remove more stuff (including system apps) since you're rooted. I would advise caution however in case you remove the wrong thing. Perhaps someone else can post regarding which particular system apps are safe to remove, as I haven't expreimented with this myself.

He could just freeze them first and play with the tf a couple of days and if there are no problems, delete them.
Removing junk isn't a bad thing to do, but in my experience, app killers do more bad than good in android. Other than in windows, you don't need tons of free ram to run apps smoothly. Android has a great ram management that fills your ram with apps for fast access, and closes the least used/needed when another app requests more ram. So if you use an app killer, your tf will have more to do with restarting the apps you just closed and your performance will actually decrease. Google it and you'll know what I mean.

As i said before, much ram usage isn't necessarily a bad thing. It only eats performance if a running app is badly coded and doesn't give its ram free when required. Then you better kill this specific app instead of autokilling stuff. Well coded apps won't eat your performance, no matter how much ram is used.

300Mb oof ram are dedicated to Nvidia Tegra 2. For this reason you read "only" 700Mb. Maybe in near future we will able to allocate more memory than 256Mb to our Tegra 2
memory usage doesn't mean too much now if the app/programe is properly coded, when needed, android should be able to release them on the fly......
same goes to my windows 7 machine, it's got 8 gig memory but the free memory always remains under 500M because the system is using them to cache most recently used applications.
Constantly clearing memory will not help too much, and believe or not, it worsens both the performance and the battery life..
but again, android is not as robust as windows in the terms of memory management, so it's not a bad idea to occasionally take a look at the actual memory usage but just don't go too excessive...
Screwing around with app-killers is never a good idea. Are you actually experiencing issues due to insufficient RAM? I've never had an issue with RAM on my Transformer. Android is much better at handling its memory than people are, let it do its thing.
And for the record, RAM is there to be used. It's the fastest memory a device has, so the more it makes use of, the better. If something else needs more RAM, Android will flush out something that doesn't need it.
I think app-killers are one of the biggest issues with Android, in that people seem to think they're necessary. Unless you actually have some app that's misbehaving or has a memory-leak or something, you shouldn't ever really need to manage your running applications. Just leave it all alone for a while and see how you go.

not at all. The machine is fast, its very quick and loads things quickly. The only time I had problem is using logmein, it crashed and said out of memory...I was a bit perplexed. I cleared a lot on my SGS2, and it was much faster.
Let me know any ideas, otherwise, as suggested, I will see how it goes
From my previous experience with Android devices, it's nearly impossible to increase the amount of free ram. I've tried, and only found one solution that I'll talk about later.
This isn't a bad thing. Ram is not CPU usage, and ram is going to use roughly the same amount of electricity regardless.
What android does is fill up the ram with programs that you will potentially use. That way when you want to use the program, it's already loaded in memory. When you load another program into memory, say a game, it will close apps to make room for the new app.
If you really want more memory, the closest thing is a swap file or partition. I use one on my phone, and it helps a good bit. Don't know if it would help the TF101, since it already has 1GB ram.
If you are still set on more free ram, try a program like auto memory manager (there is also another program very similar, has a blue fish for a logo but I forget the name). This doesn't kill apps in memory. Instead it changes the the when android closes programs in memory based on how much free memory is available and the priority of the program. I used it before on my phone with pretty good success, but now I use a swap file instead.
Right now I don't use a swap file or memory manager on my tf101, sine it runs great without it.
Thanks for all your responses.
I think this article should explain how Android 2.x operates. Even though the article is not about Honeycomb (Android 3.x), I doubt Google has changed how it manages memory in Honeycomb.

unused ram is wasted ram
Froyo and Gingerbread for me is the same when it comes to free ram.

I think you have it backwards. That's only how much you have left... I could be wrong though. I want to get my panties in a bunch over the principles of not having gingerbread. But to be totally honest after flashing so many roms and testing so many different kernel combos and so on, I don't see the real advantage of having my resources eaten up so that I have a "CRT" screen off animation. I am an adult that needs a functioning phone. I heard way back when that 2.3 is more optimized for gaming. I haven't noticed a difference. Flame away though ye Vibrant owners....
I'm looking at the running tabs of the manage apps section and I have 120 MB taken up with another 210 MB free. I'm running Skype, kaokaotalk, Google maps, beautiful Widgets and Google voice on top of the OS and just opening up the app manager takes up 18 mb itself. In total running apps take up around 60 mb. The rest are cached. I don't think the apps are taking much memory cause they're in standby mode though. Gingerbread has been like a night and day difference compared to froyo IMHO. Much better ram management and faster switching between apps and all out performance. Try cm7.1 I highly highly recommend it. I just started using it a week ago and I'm starting to think Im an idiot for not trying it before. Along with the GPS fix and glitch kernel its much better than bionic 1.3.1 which was what I was using before.

Cm7 lacks hardware acceleration wich means scrolling suvks on the web and no 720p fladh vid playback... wich is something i need.
You can just use opera web browser for smooth scrolling and amazing web browsing overall. I don't know about the lack of 720p playback will check on it though.

You really have no idea how android software manages itself, do you? I'm pretty sure the software is smarter than you are at managing your apps.
Also, the more functions you add in software, the more space it takes up in both rom and ram.

He should probably install Android 1.1 if he wants to go back to managing his apps.
How is performance? People need to stop worrying about how RAM is being used unless they're OS engineers or at least know a bit about how memory management works. People did the same thing when Windows 7 was released because it appears to use more RAM, but overall performance with modern hardware and a good amount of RAM is much better than Win2000 and WinXP. Ideally the OS should use as much RAM as possible and swap things out when needed according to a memory management algorithm that maximizes performance, not free RAM.
Memory don't really matter unless u use browser alot an its annoying opening system panel an see 90 apps open >.<

I have about 220 used out of 339mb honestly I have alot of apps running i do a good amount of web browsing and i have a live wallpaper going as well and i have yet to reach a point where there is not enough ram available ...This is my experience with most GB roms i have used..
I honestly think the biggest problem when it comes down to lag is people do not give enough time to run in the software.. Think about when you flash between different roms alot is changing, in some cases even the entire file system is converted. I use Simply Honey 4 now and the first day it had a little hang up here or there.. now 2 days later nothing lags not even the browser.. This was a similar experience when i tried out CM7 and Malice... Just my opinion..

You're assuming that it's lagging because it's not managing memory as well as it could be, but you're jumping to that conclusion. The processor, the IO with the browser cache, lots of Flash in pages, etc. can all cause browser lag. Try setting Plug-Ins to On Demand so that it doesn't run every Flash advertisement on every page. Flash really bogs down the CPU.
The i9000 has just 389 mb ram available to users and hence often leads to lags and app closures in background, in addition to poor gaming performance(apps have to be closed by the game causing stutters and frame rate dops in the beginning of any game)
I was wondering if like ios it was possible for a rom dev to just allow core os apps in a rom and have psuedo-multitasking(freezing and unfreezing) like ios.The reason that iphone 4s, works so smooth and can play heavy games(like real racing 3) with 512 mb ram is because of their multi tasking technique.
At the moment,There is an option in developer options where you can limit background processes to none and purge activities as soon as you exit the activity.This is good for running games(as even the launcher and any other back ground app is closed as soon as u start the app allowing full ram for the current game).This is good for gamers but prevents any form of multi tasking between apps.
If this could be used in complement with freezing and unfreezing of background apps(like ios) then maybe this phone would not have any lag issues at all, even in future heavy os updates.
P.S : It's just an idea. I'm no dev but sure could use an opinion of one .
EDIT : A solution which works for me. Gamerzrom v4.0 has caching of apps pre-enabled. So no more apps killed in background due to lack of ram.
Or you could just use a task manager/killer. Es task manager is good.

Taskmanagers are not good and are conflicting with android LMK.
I'd also love to see stuff working like this. Instead of killing all the apps running in background, keep them "frozen" and restore their last state when opening, just like iOS.
And please, don't give us ideas like task killers, tweaks, overclock, bigmem and stuff.. That's NOT what I want, got it?

Agreed as task killers never worked for me, But to have actual freezing (of background apps only) there's greenify (available on market for free for root users only), and so i have enough ram(about 170-190 mb) to play heavy games without much lag.
But the issue here is to have proper multi-tasking without burdening the os. That is just like how greenify stores the state of the app in background and then completely freezes it, so it won't start again in background and yet open normally when needed(better than disabling the app/service) .If something like this could be extended to foreground apps.
If there's no solution possible, then just buy the cheaper version of iphone coming soon, if its expensive ryt now .
Thats a great idea but there's a problem today new phones come out like crazy i mean now you have phones with quad core processors and 1gb of ram new graphic gpus and stuff which make our phones too old and weak and most people dont bother with things like that because most of them just get a new phone sooner or later which doesnt really need this since they are strong enough to run anything and make it happen fast. So in conclusion devs dont bother with a project that big cause they will move on to different phones as you see they are cheaper everyday. Well over 25 million sgs1 have been sold, and all of them don't have enough money to upgrade anytime soon.
Also the need of such high specs is because apps run in parallel in background.If such a project to develop psuedo-multi tasking is started and completed, then there won't be any need of upgrading ur phone at all(even other low ram phones will benefit from it). But such a project requires great deal of work with how the system works internally, it will require great devs (which we have ) so maybe something can happen :fingers-crossed:.
I know that our phones are strong enough to handle any app one at a time(i disabled all background services possible and set phone to purge any activity as soon as it exits and set background app limit to 0 , using 439mb ram option in devil kernel with sick sky launcher), so i had upto 230 mb ram free when i checked it in settings app(which uses 30 mb ram itself) . With such a setup and oc to 1.2 ghz, i have been able to play real racing 3 with medium graphics(modded)(played at level of graphics of iphone 4) on my phone with almost no lag.
Yes the i9000 has sold alot but ive been looking at the dev section and people are moving on slowly :/ which is a shame. Our phones have enough power for now but for how long i think that at lot of devs will leave the i9000 which makes me sad but what can you do.

Delete bloatware,disable unnecessary services without disabling whole app with DisableServices app ( you can find it on google store,and it's free), install busybox pro and run RAM manager Pro, and last step would be to try installing soem custom Roms which probably could give better performance to you.
A good setup for gaming
For those people who want to obtain maximum performance from games, here are some tips which i have found over the 3 years i have had this phone:
1) The best kernel for gaming which i have used would be devil kernel (jb 4.2) , purely because of a 439 mb ram optionum amount of ram which can be found usable at the moment. This mode however disables the camera completely. Also it has options for overclocking.
I personally use the 439 mb ram option and 1.2 ghz clock speed for processor.
2) Try to use a debloated rom, and then try to use as less gapps as possible i.e. try to use the slim version of the gapps for the rom or install the gapps which u require manually. The gapps are not shown normally but under google services so u cant hibernate them with greenify. SO its better to not have unused gapps and features like face unlock ets.
3) Instead of using task managers, use greenify so that apps do not restart again. And try to hibernate all apps which u dont require. Apps like facebook, g+ and whatsapp are the biggest ram hoggers. Also beware of google maps cuz it does not hibernates(uses 30-40 mb ram)
4) Disable services like email exchange etc which are not used by you at all.
5)I have seen that restarting the phone helps get rid of some google core services, giving more free ram.
6) There is an option in developer settings at the bottom in apps section, set background app limit to none and also check the option "don't keep activities". Do this just before gaming and then undo them after ur done or else it will prevent any form of multi tasking.
7)Try to use light weight launchers, and no widgets(as these themselve are like an extra process which need to run in background). I am using sicksky launcher(uses just 18 mb). other options are zeam and lightning launcher.
NOTE : anyone using stock samsung rom (2.3.6), they should switch over to a custom rom, because samsung rom is completely not for gamers. most of the system processes are hard to kill , also total available ram is only (316-330) vs jb ( total ram usable is 390- 439). However if
u dont wanna change ur rom, greenify will still help, also disabling services.
Conclusion: I am using gamerzrom v4, with devil kernel using 439 mb ram option and 1.2 ghz oc.
I have had no lags in all temple runs (including oz), subway surfer and rr3 on medium graphics, nfs mw. normally using the above tips i have 180-210 + <ram used by settings app> ram free at any moment when i'm checking free ram in settings->apps->running (settings itself is a process and to see total free ram add the amount used by settings to free ram).
Also i have observed that the game devs(mainly gameloft and glu) have now begun to put our phone in low power gpu category(not totally incorrect for an unmodded sgs but not true if u have use the above tricks(especially oc and ram mod)).
so these games often can be modded for higher graphics (various mods on xda for games like nfs mw, rr3, asphalt 7, nova 3 etc) so they can be played with better graphics without lag. I have tried nfs mw mod, asphalt 7 mod, rr3 mod and they all work pretty good on medium(not available normally).
i would love it if more people share their tips on how they keep their phones going strong
Saw this Forum, Even tho im not a Samsung GS1 User, My Buddy has one and i recently gave him my ADJ Values that i use on my Xperia Play (same specs as ur device...) and he said he could do Gaming, Multitasking, and All sorts of more,
Here it is:
Code:
# Pro Gamer ADJ 1.3 By Pizza_Dox
ro.FOREGROUND_APP_ADJ=0
ro.VISIBLE_APP_ADJ=3
ro.PERCEPTIBLE_APP_ADJ=2
ro.HEAVY_WEIGHT_APP_ADJ=3
ro.SECONDARY_SERVER_ADJ=15
ro.BACKUP_APP_ADJ=7
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=6
ro.HIDDEN_APP_MIN_ADJ=3
ro.EMPTY_APP_ADJ=15
Also if u Wanna Keep the Home Launcher in Ram do this Instead of This:
Code:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=6
Replace with This:
Code:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
Oh and to apply them just copy to build.prop but make sure their arnt any other ADJ Values, then once done save and reboot!
Hope this helped,
Oh btw try VmLagTunner before Playing Games, Or install Permanently!

Yes the i9000 has sold alot but ive been looking at the dev section and people are moving on slowly :/ which is a shame. Our phones have enough power for now but for how long i think that at lot of devs will leave the i9000 which makes me sad but what can you do.

Well, our I9000s are almost 4 year old so no doubt that the development is gonna be worse, cause newer devices are being released.
Anyway, 4.2 seems to work bad on our phones so I really doubt that 4.3 will be any better. It just seems that the new JellyBean more performance than our phones can offer.
Sooner or later we all will switch to something newer

Take a screen shot of all the installed apps in ur list and also take a screenshot of the ram usage ... Let's see who conserves well .... Mention the task killers ....

I wouldnt recommend "adding" a Task Killer. Better tweak Android's native one to you likings using any of many Tweakers, or manually do so via Build.prop. It has been stated than Android OS does a great job at this. Task Killers will more likely lag the device and eat up resources/battery.

Task killer was actually useful back in Froyo days... Back then Android's memory management isn't that great and very prone to lags (I remember my old Froyo phone)
But seriously... we're now at version 4.4.x, no longer 2.2.x... Android has become more and more efficient and even now Kitkat runs on a 512MB RAM device.
If you worry about background apps taking CPU cycles or keeping the device at wakelocks.... Greenify helps... but the ultimate solution is to hunt down the app and uninstall it. It's obvious that the app dev did a horrible job.
+1
I agree...I use Greenify and it helps a lot, airdroid, and even camaras work in the background. I've debloated my Grand, Seeder, done some minor build.prop tweaks (manually): fling speeds, max events, etc, and I have no complaints. Many of those "tweaks" out there, is more 'Snake Oil' than anything else.
