I get tired of the battery life and phone running hot, so this afternoon I froze gmail and yahoo mail apps that I use and use sgs2's email.
Just notice that I can set the sync time, set mine every 4 hours.
Battery drains slower now and the phone runs cooler. The gmail and ymail apps wouldn't let you adjust the sync timing so the phone is constantly connecting thus per battery and heat.

anyway, for gmail the connection is not always on

I think for gmail and yahoo apps, connection its always on.especially yahoo..and the is no easy to set the sync timing.
With native email client you can set sync timing.

...
The gmail app uses push email which is 'always-on' but doesn't actually sync unless you receive an email. Therefore, battery usage is more dependent on how often you receive email rather than the fact that is is 'always on'
See: h t t p://w w w.pushemail.co.uk/
for an overview of how push email works.
My phone runs cooler without push mail, no master what the theory is. Sync every hour.

Here's the thing.
My NS4G when it's connected to 4G is great.
However, when it goes idle (which is most of the time if I'm not using it), I'm not connected to the internet at all. No puch notifications. No Gtalk messages. No Facebook updates. Nothing.
And it only wakes up when I wake it up.
this all sorts of defeats the object of having a contantly on connection, and I don't get the benefit of 4G, unless it's literally only to be used when I'm surfing the web ? Is that all it's good for on this phone, and the reaosn I'm paying another 10 bucks ?
Is there any way to increase the tine it takes to go idle ?
Hmmm... it should just be idle when no data is needed. We had another report from another user of the same problem. Can you send email to yourself and wait 10 min to make sure it doesn't work?

That is exactly what I've been doing all day. No emails. Gtalk goes offline. all get delivered when I connect by browsing or opening facebook. anything that required data.
Hmm there was a setting for something like that. I used it on my evo to conserve juice I just had to check my phone if expecting something important

Can u check in "accounts" in setting and uptop above all your accounts make sure background sync is checked

Look in the questions section for thread called 4g idle. That's the same issue.

is there a way to keep data connection on without it killing the battery fast
I have data on all day and battery lasts a whole day, it's usually on about 40% when i go bed
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Yeah, I've never turned off data.
Maybe with HEAVY game usage it might be worth it but for everyday use I like to stay connected.
I have ebuddy & Skype running and loads of **** set to sync every hour or half our and the battery lasts easy a day at work & most of the evening.
It's only when I'm smashing some heavy screen on time (4hrs+) that I'm needing a recharge.
If you are on a 4.0 based firmware, then if you turn the automatic network search off and manually set it to your network provider, that usually helps a lot.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
turn down your screen brightness.. if you bought the auto brightness app from the market it will definitely help... my battery lasts about 10-18 hours depending on the amount of games I get into in one day..

No matter which app I use for my mail, gmail or the stock android one, the notifications are just not consistent.
Sometimes I get them and sometimes I don't but my phone always tells me I have an email so I know its just the nexus 7 that's being funny.
I have checked settings for syncing and everything is on so does anyone know why?
Thanks.

WiFi connection good? Is your WiFi icon grey or blue?
Sent from my Nexus 7
Sounds stupid but you got push enabled haven't you? I made that mistake, or perhaps try the awake time of the app I once had mine set to push through the night and not be awake during the day
WiFi connection is perfect and I do have things set to push.

Hey guys I was just wondering does anyone know of a good email app for the note 3 with a nice looking Ui, that doesn't drain the battery like crap? I probably check my emails once a day. At the moment I'm using an app called evomail which has got probably the best Ui I've ever seen rivaled to ios, however it only supports push notifications so it kills my battery crazily fast?

Try this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.PM&hl=en_GB
K-9 Mail, as well as having the best functionality of any email client that I have found, has also had a recent UI makeover.
You can tell the mail clients to not push. I just use Gmail and set to pull every 30 mins.

As per the title, I am finding on a daily basis that I am only getting 14-15 hours Max.
I only have one homescreen with no Widgets on it.
I have 3 mail accounts, 2 are exchange, 1 Gmail.
No live wallpaper,
Been in a good signal area most of the time, send maybe 10 texts a day, very few calls. No music listening, no picture taking.
Phone is a uk phone d802 supplied by 3 but reflashed with generic open firmware to remove 3 bloat.
Any ideas what's going on or how I try to resolve it?

Don't know if this helps to see where problem is
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Might be an app sucking the battery or a bad flash. Try reflashing the firmware. Do a factory reset before the flash and one afterwards.
Also, install GSAM battery monitor.
Disabling knock on might help as well. However if you do find a solution without disabling knock on please let me know.

try regular procedure found everywhere on how to determine wakelock.
also check for battery unfriendly settings. like email sync settings, push is friendliest, check-in every minute keeps phone awake lol.
but most importantly, state what you do in these 14 hours. How many is the screen on. etc.

I think I can do this from the standard task manager can't I? Sure there is an option to stop services. Don't really use Google now so will not miss that.
Screen time on from my screenshot yesterday was 12% don't know if that's considered high etc.

Have two exchange accounts that are push and one Gmail set for every hour.
Generally just viewing Facebook, bit of browsing and 1-2 calls a day if about 5mins. Occasionally streaming tv services for about 30 mind.

Try turning off reporting and history in Google location settings. As helped my phones battery tremendously.
Sent from my VZW LG G2
yeah, set Gmail to push,
turn in settings locations off
in Google settings also
turn backup off,
reboot, check if settings were saved
install betterbatterystats from play or this forum. with that check kernel and partials. Google what they are and mean.
Also check deep sleep percentage in cpu spy. should be, pending you keeping awake around 95% in period off charger.
success
