Running 2.3 and it's great...except I REALLY liked the edit function of the 2.1 default input where you could drag the words to the right spot from a larger dialog box. Fat fingers make it tough to position the slider in 2.3. Anyone know if this is possible? Or if there is another keyboard that uses the same edit function?
Thanks.

Hi I'm currently using PocketCM Keyboard which is better than the default but a bit frustrating when having to use !&- etc as you have to switch to numbers then to exclamations...
I was wondering if anyone have found a better keyboard (perhaps like the iphone with everything on the one screen) but still takes advantage of the screen size?
JetMouse, you know you can easily customise the layout of PocketCM Keyboard to suit your needs? It's as easy as editing a text file to control which symbols appear on which buttons. Since I did that it's easily become my favourite software on my Touch.

No I didn't know this - can you run me through how to do it?

I use SPB Keyboard (the new one, version 4.0) with fullscreen mode. The non-fullscreen mode is pretty much iphone-like. Don't know if it's "better" - to my taste the stock one is just perfect in all respects except for lack of support for Russian, which I need. Unlike most other keyboards, it has arrows which compensate the absense of the dpad on the device.
Sure thing:
Connect your PocketPC to your computer so you can browse the contents of the device.
Browse to \Program Files\PCMKeyboard
Copy English.layout (or whichever one you're using) to your computer's desktop
Make a backup of the file, just in case
Open the live file with Notepad
You can see four lines labelled keyboard_layout_#=
Edit the characters in those lines to change the symbols on the keys in PocketCM Keyboard
Each of the four lines contains a complete template for the keyboard. Rows are separated by the \n (newline) combination
There are some shortcuts to create special-purpose keys:
\2 seems to be uppercase
\1 seems to be lowercase
\b is backspace
\M is the symbol/text toggle button
\N is the enter key
There is a way of including smilies or combinations of characters on single keys, but I can't remember how. I also can't remember how to edit the row of quick symbols you see if you hold down the '123#?' button
Once you've made your changes, save the file on your computer and copy it back over to the PocketPC.
You'll need to choose a different softinput thing and then go back to PCM Keyboard to see the changes.
Don't forget to save the file somewhere in case you upgrade to a newer version of PCM Keyboard.
My favourite keyboard is Tengo. Allows very fast and forgiving typing. You might like to try it. I hope it works on Touch HD cos I have not got one to try on yet.
They have a free version, a commercial regular version, and a commercial thumb version.
the best keyboard for me is touchpal from http://www.cootek.com/
so many improvements

I just tested it, yes it is 100% compatible.
I love this keyboard, but I am trying to get it to run using the Dutch language. It is so blazing fast and accurate in English using the suretype layout, it's not even funny. I SWEAR I cannot type faster using a hardware keyboard, simply because of the fact that it is just as accurate, has big enough keys to type blind, and you don't actually have to depress a button so... works for me
Still stuck with the trial version though...
Only thing that I still gotta get used to is switching keyboards using a finger slide, I just keep pressing buttons instead of triggering the slide really cool function though as it saves button space and basically is just cool to show people
Thanks for the tip people!
EDIT:
Got my own language it in it now, easy... Also really easy to switch languages... Just pull down the ABC key and pick one. This does reveal some non-skinned ugly winmo buttons though, even while the rest of the keyboard is Diamond skinned.

Completely Agree, it is very usefull, Fast and easy to use Keyboard
TouchPal
I would at least try the demo of this. I personally prefer TouchPal to a Blackberry hardware keyboard. I am serious. The seplling correction and word prediction is simply amazing. Completely altered my view of software keyboards.
BTW- I am 6' 2" and weigh 220 with BIG hands, and Have been happy with TouchPal since the first Touch.
Hello everyone!
I have a question about input text editing (for example while editing text messages to correct a single word). I have tested couple of keyboards for my X8 but no one seems to add that feature and right now i don't think that it is keyboard specific feature. On the stock ROM, Gingerbread and default input keyboard in miniCM (which is not qwerty, that's why I am not using it) editing single words while writing a text message is easier because of input-selecting-arrow thingy which is not present on any other miniCM's keyboards and makes it difficult to select a text. Is it any way to install it on miniCM as well? I will attach a picture so you know what i mean with those 'arrows'.
Thank you!

I guess that feature is only in GingerBread ROM 2.3, I hope I guess right
Well, I hope that it is NOT true. Even stock SE 2.1 had a decent text editing for single words/letter mistakes. It's really pain in the ass to precise place a select for word editing .. espacially with big fingers
Well, the whole problem is with placing the courser at a correct place, then you can hold the input space and choose "mark text" and you will easily mark the text you want to delete
Graveir:
Yes! Placing of the cursor in the right position is really hard for me. I suppose there is no option to add the method used in stock eclair rom or gingerbread?
I am on Kingdom Stock 3.0 Sense RSL1.1 and I was dragging my finger across the keyboard and wala! It swyped....did HTC make It's own swype style keyboard? Or? I don't have swype anywhere on my phone. So did HTC include swype style input on their sense 3.0 keyboard or am I insane? Its pretty sweet...

haha yea they did its called htc trace
Radical man
wish we could get a version without the arrow buttons. makes buttons too small.
Trace does work nice though, just tried it. Deleting swype lol!
yea it does work pretty well. I've always liked the idea of swype but hated the landscape keyboard. SlideIT has a good idea thats a slideable switch that toggles slide and abc.
seems like there has to be a way to get rid of those damn arrows. Is there a flashable zip or an APK we can try to mod?
I'm use RLS2 and I don't see that. Did you have to take Trace out?
I'm on RLS2 for Uber kingdom. I tried out trace but I dont think it works as well as swype. 1) When you trace a word then tap on another word (not the original suggestion), it will not automatically add a space when you start tracing the next word 2) there is no easy way to correct words once you've started tracing a new one (swype allowed you to double tap on any word to look up its suggestions) 3) The arrow keys on the stock keyboard make it a lot harder to type on.
I tried installing swype on uber kingdom (I'm using the swype installer that I have saved from titanium backup and downloading the latest swype) but I keep getting an error message saying that my version of swype is configured for another device. I can type on the the swype keyboard but I can't swype on it How did you guys get it to work?
HTC trace,maybe
Sent from my Optimized Inc using XDA App
I've tried RLS 2, 3, and 4... I don't see an HTC Trace option anywhere... am I missing it?
(I am in swype beta, so I'll probably stick with that, but I'd like to try Trace regardless)
I've gotten so used to Swype and all its quirks and know how to get it to do just about anything. I think I'll just stick with it.
Anyone else find that when you reboot your phone you have to un-select Swype and re-select it as input method or it won't recognize any words?
if you could supply an apk, you'd be my hero
Hi guys!
I have a question about the SGS2.
On the latest version of my OLD HTC with rooted ROM Reflax it has arrows under the keyboard.
While the SGS2 doesn't have a trackball/pad, I would like to have a keyboard with arrows so I can go back/forward/up/down in my characters in my text.
Before the SGS2 I had the HTC Desire that one has a trackball/pad.
It would be awesome if someone know an app, or would develop one for me and other people!
(Sorry for my bad english grammer, Im not the best with it..)
Greetings,
RedFeather
AFAIK the stock keyboard doesn't have this option but I didn't use it long enough to discover it. Try 'Gingerbread Keyboard' on the matket by Steven Lin which is free or Perfect Keyboard which is paid but lives up to its name. Both have the required option if you swipe up in the space bar.
Regards.
Thanks, and i see this is placed in the wrong forum? How to replace it to Q&A? (New to XDA)
Someone else got an option?
Smart keyboard pro as the ability to put arrows on the keyboard.
Used it on my MIUI roms and worked great.
In Settings you enable or disable it and with a HTC skin it looks exactly the same.

hmm sounds nice.
I saw it in the market, it is paid. Whats the difference with the Trial version?
And else, do you have the pro version .apk for me? (A):$
Swype
The built-in swype keyboard has the ability to show arrow keys.
To get them you need to swipe from the swype-key (bottom left) to the "sym" key.
Hi
Is it possible to change keyboard in CM7 to phone keypad ??
it is really difficult to send message with its default keyboard...
tnx
Yes of course you can, just download one from market then go into language and keyboard settings and enable it. Then bring your keyboard up and long press on text screen and change imput method to new keyboard.
Alternative is to remove latin.ime from system apps and replace with other keyboard.
Big buttons keyboard is quite good, used it for a while but stock is more responsive and the new ics keyboard posted in apps and themes thread is awsome.
