Brief history. My wife has a G1 and apparently she has not been able to download apps for sometime now. When she took it to Tmobile for them to check out, they said,"you must have downloaded a corrupt app from the market, we're sorry, but we can't fix it. Meanwhile, she was not allowing me to root it, and possibly finding a solution. So now, we got her an HTC sensation, so I can have her phone to play with. My quest is to fix the phone to prove to my wife that I know more than your local Tmobile rep. With that being said,"What do I do?" JK I know where to start, I just wanted to know if there is any relationship between the G1 and this corrupt market issues as I spent most of my time in the Thunderbolt forum. Thanks in advance.
do you want to root it? or just wipe it out? you can do many different things.. not sure what the relation is with your market not working

Root and wipe, basically just make it right again and to show my wife the benefits of rooting. Before a complete wipe though, I would like to see if there is any validity to this "corrupt app" and "not fixable" statements made by Tmobile reps. My first roadblock seems to be the sim card, I don't have one, and can't find a way to root w/o it yet.
Options-
-Use my wife's current sim card (its a 4G sim now for her sensation, will it still work), but she would probably have a hissy and not let me use it
-Use my sim card from my Tbolt (which requires an unlock code)
-Find a way to root w/o a sim all-together
I am sure with a little more investigating, I'll find a way to make it work.
Why not just boot to recover and wipe?
Turn phone off.
Press and hold "HOME" button, press power button, keep holding home.
When it gets to the "!" screen, open keyboard, press ALT-L.
Then press ALT-W (W is for Wipe).
When finished, reboot.

yes try that first!! see if you can get it to work... you will need her sim just for a second so you can get by the google sign in... than if you connect to wifi you can remove the sim, ad if you still want to root the device follow this guide here...
[Guide] (8-18-11) G1 How-to: Root, Un-Root & Everything in-between
you can do this whole guide pretty quick, and you only need to use your wife's sim card for 1 second... just to sign into google once you get to 1.5.. than you can give it back to her and do everything via wifi, let me know if you need some more help..
Done, finally! This might have been super simple for any of you to do, it took me a total of about 8 hrs to get where I am, which is successfully running cm5.0.8.
This process was made more difficult by not having an activated sim card, and not being connected to wi-fi to even set up google.
Using adb I found a way to bypass the google setup when you have an "expired" Tmobile sim card inserted, but to use adb I needed usb debugging enabled, and I finally figured that out.
Now to hopefully make this long story shorter, I am now flashing whatever rom I wish to run on a phone in which Tmobile said was not fixable.
The phone is, in fact, way better than any stock g1 could be.
The current rom runs great on it, (I aslo run cm7 on my Tbolt), and all market apps download and run correctly, to the contrary of what the Tmobile reps said.
Well, I guess I'm done. If nothing else, I said I could do it, and I did it.
Now maybe a little respect from my wife.
Well, the TMobile rep succeeded where it matters to their manager, they sold your wife a new phone!

My still under warranty 6900 has a totally black screen. I can see that the backlight is on- it is the actual lcd that is black and the phone will receive calls. (I can't see if it goes to bootloader since the screen is black) Presumably, this has nothing to do with the nsfan6.5 ROM on it.
Verizon CS told me on the phone that if they sent me a warranty replacement then found it to be water (or physically) damaged, they would "have to" bill me for the RETAIL value of the phone. She gave me the option to take it into a verizon store to have a tech first OK the replacement to avoid this possibility. He OK'd it and is should be here shortly.
Is there a way to get it back to stock rom while not being able to read what is on the screen? For that matter, is this even worth doing or will VZW not notice?
PS- I'm trying to decide what ROM to put on the replacement phone- Android is tempting but I think I'm going to wait for the smart people to finish getting stereo bluetooth and standalone GPS all sorted out. I'm sure I'll play with it on the SD card in the meanwhile. Thoughts?
I realized I should add:
On the phone I need to send back, I have the bell (complete with ugly blue start up screen) 3.42.50 radio and whatever nsfan 6.5 build was most recent back then.
To accomplish the flash, I also have a 2gb microsd card (with reader) and have downloaded the stock verizon rom.
Also, the touch screen appears to work (vibrates on touch) however, no amount of guesses with random screen touches could get the phone to connect with activesync or tether (sadly, the last type of connection I made was as a removable drive). In other words, things might not be where they are supposed to be on the screen so telling me to tap at pixel 120x200 (or wherever the "next" or "ok" button might invisibly be) may or may not work.
thanks again!
Enter bootloader - Hold Camera and Power and soft reset.

LOL, thanks. I just logged on to say I'd figured it out. It finally dawned on me that 10 months ago i'd noticed (or heard or something) that you didn't need the active sync connection going if you entered bootloader first.
Fantastic. Many thanks.
Just in case someone reads this trying to do the same thing: I saw elsewhere that you need to run imcoke.41 before reflashing with stock ROM so that's what I did.
Correct?
I think you need to run the .40 unlocker, not the .41
.40 is supposed to be overwritable, .41 is not
I've been using .40 before I send back my phones. When I flash the VZW ROM it usually errors out the first time, then you follow the instructions on the screen(pc) and it takes the second time.

You're right. I'm hoping it was .40 that I used and just wrote .41 here. Regardless, I already sent it off.
Hi,
A couple of months ago my power button completely stopped working on my Nexus One. After a bit of googling I saw this was a common problem for some users.
I worked around this problem by using the Trackball Wake feature in CM6 and when I actually need to turn on the device I use the "battery in & out while plugged in" hack.
I want to upgrade to CM7 and as usual I'll have to do a complete wipe. This will cause the "trackball wake" feature to go back to default which as I recall is off.
I'm also worried about various problems during the install that would require me to boot back into the bootloader which is impossible w/o a power button...
Any suggestions?
(Except "get a new phone". I'm in Israel and new phones here ain't cheap. a Nexus S for instance costs about 1000$ off contract.)
Thanks.
1) Buy a new power button board from eBay and fix the phone / give the phone to someone to fix.
2) Talk to HTC customer service in US (or where you bought the Nexus - I guess from Google?), open a ticket, ask for replacement phone, open account in advance on www.usaddress.com or such, give them the usaddress account address, send them the phone marked with your ticket number and S/N, document yourself sending the phone, wait till you get the phone by mail.
There is nothing much you can do. If you get your ROM to crash before ADB daemon starts running, you won't be able to get to recovery - and bootloader won't help you.
P.S. Don't upgrade to CM7 just yet. It's not nearly stable enough, and it causes most launchers to crawl.
There is a button to reboot into recovery directly on cm6

He's talking about a case of FAILED installation.
I don't see how you can't do it, but in a very rare case, yes it could end up bad.
Just make sure you check md5, and most people have upgrade w/o wiping anything at all. Even if you do wipe it, just flash everything and the first time that you boot up, go straight to enable trackball wake.
You can get into fastboot no problem, and from fastboot you can boot into recovery:
fastboot boot recovery.img
(or whatever your recover file is named)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yes, if he's fastboot-oem-unlocked, then it's a possibility.
Thanks a lot!
Fixing the power button is too much messing with hardware for me, and fixing it costs about 80$..
What I'm basically getting is that in the ****ti case I do have some error during installation I'm screwed but that it's a rare situation...
Would you risk it?
I'm seriously considering selling it (2nd hand hi-end phones go for about 400$ in Israel since buying a new one is much more expensive due to taxes) and having someone from my work bring me a new Nexus S (I work in a startup that also has an office in NY)
BTW, I called HTC regarding this problem and they've said that rooting / installing custom ROMs voided the warranty... Is that not the case?
Thanks.
If you ask me - CM7 is nowhere near completion state, and I kinda regret moving to it. Mostly because of launchers that don't support Gingerbread yet (both ADW and LauncherPro lag like hell with 7 screens), because of wonkiness (can be cured with Dewonkifier app, but still annoying), and because I need to compile it myself to get battery percentage. If you use GO Launcher or don't use many screens, don't mind installing Dewonkifier, and don't mind not having battery percentage - you can install it.
Read multiple threads about warranty on XDA. I've recently got my friend's phone exchanged, in exactly the same setup as you have (office in US).
You shouldn't need a power button using Clockwork recovery. Best method is to install Rom Manager. It will install the latest Clockwork 3.0.0.5 and allow you to download CM7 stable as well as GAPPS.
It is pretty fool-proof.
Later versions of Clockwork only use the trackball for selecting and use the back button; I think you can also use VOL+/- to go back also.
If you want to be safe, download several roms to your SD card. Perhaps CM6, CM7, and whatever else. That way if one rom fails, you have another option.
Clockwork also has the options to mount the SD card directly from the recovery menu, so you have the option of downloading roms on your PC and transfer them over to the phone.
I have Verizon so I don't have a sim card but I want to get past the "No SIM card. Emergency calls only" screen so I can play with the phone before I sell it.
I tried touching the four corners, I tried typing stuff on the emergency dialer..any ideas how to get into the operating system?

Actually if anyone has a clue how to do this it would be much appreciated! I just got one but my AT&T dealer line isn't active yet so I don't have a sim card that is provisioned yet, and Motoblur keeps giving me a "Motoblur is Busy" error message so I can't even access my old motoblur account or make a new one >.< Please if anyone has any idea whats wrong help us out!
Supposedly, you can't make this phone get past emergency dialing without a SIM card, and then all it will do is require MotoBlur signup before it goes any further.
Supposedly.
But there are boot options, if you boot the power while holding the VOL- key. Explore at your own risk, one of those might hose the phone. Supposedly, at least one can do a complete factory reset.
Just sign into your motoblur account and it'll let you use the phone. Connect to wifi if you have it to get pass the motoblur screen. Press menu and some options will pop up including wifi settings.
Hope that helps.

You can't even get to the MotoBlur sign in part, you're stuck at the screen saying no sim card.
I got my atrix on release day but am waiting for my employee line to become active so I currently have bi connection. What you need to do is take any sim card from a friend or an old one. Put it in the phone. Connect to wifi and do the blur log in/sign up. Then you are good. It'll only work on wifi till you get it on whatever carrier you're planning on using. But it's better than nothing.
My suggestion would be to get a friend who is on att to go into a store and say his sim was lost and they'll give him a new one and deactivate the old one. Use that old one till you have service of your own.
Good luck

Figured out a solution
I figured out how to get past the SIM card requirement by playing with the boot options. The phone still requires you to register for a MotoBlur account, but I can live with that.
1. Load Boot menu by holding the Volume Down button while starting the phone.
2. Press the Volume Down button until the option "Boot Android (NO BP)" appears at the top of the screen.
3. Press the Volume Up button to select this option.
4. On load, the phone will bypass the No SIM card screen, but will ask you to register a MotoBlur account. You will have to connect to Wifi and either create a new account or sign in to one that already exists.
Luckily, this process only needs to be performed once. It looks like the phone remembers this boot option for next time
I have a at&t unlocked play 4g working with my tmobile and the at&t 2.3.3 has bloated apps they installed. I found a website that has a stock 2.3.3 firmware for an r800at and install it onto the phone with flashtool, now is this a vanilla 2.3.3 gingerbread or is it going to install the same way the phone is now with all the at&t apps n stuff?
If not what will be required to install a stock android vanilla 2.3.3 or even the new 2.3.4 onto the phone and Im not rooted btw just unlocked. Thanks

The 2.3.3 R800at FW I found has all the AT&T bloat. Just install the generic 2.3.4 R800a FW and it will add features (screenshot, tethering, etc) get rid of all of AT&T's bloat including some of the games (it will add Tetris and Bruce Lee but get rid of Tbloxx My City and SIMS 3). Sony Ericsson's bloat will still be there but it is MUCH more manageable.

I got it from the "Xperia PLAY Super Compilation" thread on these forums and just used Flashtool to load it. It couldn't use cellular data until I manually entered my APN settings (it would fail to get it automatically and suggest going to Sony Ericsson's website), so you may want to write them down or back them up with an app first. You do not have to be rooted.

When you say cellular data you mean the internet right like having a data plan on your plan right? If so... I dont have to worry about that since I never had any data plan yet
Why does the stock at&t firmware pick up data plan? Why not the 2.3.4? Thanks Again

the stock 2.3.4 FW meant for the r800a does not have the APN settings for the AT&T r800at which is why you should use a apn backup app or write them down.

Yep, but it does go online and try to retrieve them. Supposedly, it can only do this over WiFi without APN data in the first place but I have tried that and it still fails. Also, when it attempts it without WiFi, you can see the HSPA "H" logo appear in the status bar for a moment and it *IS* online for that moment even without APN settings (you can load a web page if you request it at the instant).
Now, I think I finally figured out why it was sometimes saying that it wasn't connected to the Internet even though it was and was successfully loading the page even while the error was displayed: When you back up and restore APN settings or flash from 2.3.3 R800at to 2.3.4 R800a without wiping user settings, there are TWO APN entries, only one of which works. The first one is the one I needed to delete. I couldn't select it anyway (radio button would always go back to the second APN settings entry). I first tried deleting the second one to force selection of the first and I lost all data until I restored my APN settings from my backup again.
Ok so I just followed the " Little flashtool tutorial" guide from " Logseman " on this forum and just flashed my 2.3.3 USA play 4g at&t r800at to the latest north america 2.3.4 r800a firmware.
I got 2 questions:
#1: After the flash the flashtool said in the log this:
"For flashtool, Unknown Sources and Debugging must be checked in phone settings."
What does this mean and do I do this?
#2: Also I notice when the phone is on the locked screen the tmobile word at the top right corner under the time is there but when I unlock it to the home screen the tmobile word goes away, is this ok for this new firmware? The gingerbread 2.3.3 alsways displayed tmbole word all the time. Thanks
One more question I also notice when doing a cold turn off and back on it even takes longer for it to boot compared to the at&t branded firmware is this normal too? Or maybe because it was the very first boot and it was arranging files and such? Thanks
Sorry more questions where is or to get the xperia games icon that was on the home scrren with the stock at&t firmware. I know if I slide out the gamepad it auto opens it but sometimes I use the icon without always slideing in and out the gamepad?
Not a complaint just want to learn if its a reginail thing to specific roms or something but when i go to xperia play and then more games it has all or some of the games in the list that the stock at&t rom had but this one even has more games I never heard of and some are free. why is this? thanks

The debugging is mostly if you want to root right away or do things over the ADB interface. You don't have to do it.
How did you get it on T-Mobile? Unlock code? Unlocked bootloader? Mine only says AT&T on the lock screen. It does take longer on the first boot as it creates cache files and such. It saves space in your status bar.
The icon has been renamed from "Play Games" to "Xperia(tm) PLAY," which doesn't quite fit in the portrait mode. Find it in the app drawer and make another shortcut to it by holding on it a second and then dropping it where you want on the Home screen. The "More Games" section changes all the time. The Bruce Lee game is new. I used Titanium Backup on the AT&T ROM to backup TBloxx My City and SIMS3 and reloaded them on the generic FW so I have all of them showing in my launcher.

Yes the very first boot took long but now it boots fast like normal.
I unlocked it by removing the battery and peeling off the white sticker and then on the bare circuit board theres two contact points that that you use a paper clip and touch both contact points with each ends of paper clip after of course you straighten out the paper clip first, then while holding u plug the phone to the computer usb port for about 10 seconds and that will unlock a locked xperia play 4g.
And yea the tmbile wording is at my locked screen it just goes away once unlocked to home screen, but I thought if I remember right the stock at&t rom had that t-mobile wording all the time.
Thanks
came in to help but everything seems answered............pctektgg check your inbox
I beleive for our phones there isnt any unlock codes, you have to do the procedure that I did.
After removing the white sticker underneath the battery, lay down the phone vertical/upright but the back of the phone still facing you/up.
Then turn the phone to the your right so the phone will be laying sideways.
Then while looking down at it sideways look towards the top left corner area of the green circuit board you will see gold contact points area, well right there theres 3 little circle gold contact points in a row, well the ones you want to touch/jump is the 1st and 3rd one which the 3rd is the last one. Dont worry about the middle one.
What I did was have the usb cable plugged in to the pc already before doing this, then used a paper clup to make like a u-shape then used it to touch the contact points.
So I first make sure the contacts are being jumped/touched and hold for about 10 to 15 seconds but after about 2 seconds into it being jumped/touched I plugged in the usb cable into the usb port on the actual phone and keep holding like this for about the 10 to 15secs i mention above.
Before doing all this make sure your windows has the sony pc companion installed and the drivers for your phone are working within windows and such.
After doing this pop in your sim card and put battery in but dont put sticker back on yet and battery cover, If you still get the sim unlock pop up, do the steps couple more times, if it doesnt work then you will need a special tool to install on the pc for this procedure to workl then. Heres the link where i got the unlocking procedure.
try these free steps incase they work before buying it for 25 bucks or so. If my steps are confusing then yea I would just buy the procudere from this website I give you and you'll bne good to go. Just dont waste time trying out different websites for a code cause there isnt any.

PS: You do this all without the battery in, only after you want to try to see if its unlocked you put battery back in.

Yea I think your right about a setool program because I just looked at the email that unlock website I mention here sent me a link to download the software and instructions to do the procedure I explain here and with that software running and when finally plugging in the phone to usb cable of the last step then about about that 10 seconds of holding the jumper on the 2 contact points the software pops up with a windows saying "unlocking done".
I had my wife plug the usb to the phone side since I was holding the phone and paper clip with my hands, thats when she told me about the pop window saying its unlocked.
The software they give you even has a youtube video built in into the software to show you the exact steps involved and they use tweezers instead of paper clips.
I was just hoping this will work without that tool software but I guess not.
Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum. A while back I found a phone in the gas station bathroom that I was working at. I kept it under the desk with a note and of course the camera watching it in case it disappeared without a customer picking it up. No one ever came for it and after 2 weeks (company policy) I took it home with me. Anyway, I've just been using it on my wireless internet and playing games, however my phone contract just ran out on my crappy verizon old flip phone and I want to go to straight talk and use this one.
So, I bought the Straight talk byop kit which includes a sim card for the phone, however, the SIM card that's meant for AT&T phones is too small for this one for some reason, however the TMobile one fits in it perfectly fine. The problem is that it's a tmobile sim card and I'm sure you all know that I need to unlock the phone to get it. So, last night I spent about 4 hours searching for ways to unlock it. I see it's possible to do it for free using the system settings phone codes, but the code combinations don't seem to work for me.
*#0011# - When i key enter 1 it doesn't do what the video I was watching says it's supposed to do.
*#9090# - Restarts my phone after I hit the what I'm told to.
There's another I tried however, I can't remember the code, it takes me to the debug menu, however option 6 isn't there to give me access to phone options or whatever.
So, I gave up as my laptop battery started to waiver around 10% and went to sleep.
Now, today, I hopped on and attempted to figure it out again, but got bored really quick, stumbling accross the same stuff I tried last night, so I tried rooting it thinking that getting admin access to my phone would make option 6 appear when I entered that number. I was wrong, but hey, I successfully rooted my phone so it's cool.
Anyway, I just want the SIM card to work. I really don't care if I have to unlock my phone or whatever, I just want my phone to be able to make calls. So if unlocking my phone works, please help me, if there's a way to get the super small AT&T SIM card to work, then that's be great.
I'm sure you need some of my phone info to help me out so here we go.
It's a Samsung S4 on 4.3 firmware, rooted. It's an I337 and the baseband version says I337UCUEMK2.
If you need any other information to help me out, please feel free to ask. I tried calling AT&T already btw, they said without a phone number they won't provide me with an unlock code.

I honestly don't understand 90% of the words in that post... Is there a post or article that'll teach me the basics to rooting and unlocking? I'd really love to do custom roms and everything. I honestly thought when I rooted my phone it'd give me admin access and the hidden system management options would become open to me.
Anyway, hope you can help, my wife is getting on my case about getting it unlocked. If I don't have it done tonight, she's going to make me add the straight talk to a different phone instead of this one and I really don't want to use a cheap piece of junk straight talk phone.

I'm doing research on getting a custom rom installed right now, I'm looking at Carbon ROM. I guess I have another question, is there any roms that give me full access to system manager or whatever it's called when you enter those numbers?
Okay, I made an attempt to use your walkthrough, method 2. I went and downloaded odin, and tried to flash the mdl modem however they don't exactly explain in the walkthrough how to do that, I figured I'd take a hit at it and went to do it and odin says it failed.
Is there a walk through I can read through to find how to flash?
I'm not sure what safestrap is, I can't find it on my phone and google only brings up droid ones for me as far as I've seen. It sounds like if I get the mdl modem on my phone that because it unlocks the hidden options in system manager I just have to do that and use the system manager walkthroughs I've seen to go ahead and unlock it.
EDIT: Okay, I got safestrap installed, now I'm just trying to figure out how to get a different modem installed, any help there? I'm looking and asking around but I'm not seeing anything.
