Just realised that mt on ginger rom is slow until some system apps are removed. For example Maps, gmail, email...
As far as I know some of those apps are always in memory and other apps just dont have enough ram to run.
Example: I was using System app remover to uninstall loads of useless apps from GC 7.4 and every time uninstallation process would finish Sys app rem. would restart. That stopped when I deleted Maps and some other apps.
You can see it when surfing the net and using tapatalk in thevsame time. Tapatalk will go back to favorites, and browser will reload the page when opened, insted of just showing it up immedatly.
Those things never happen on Froyo roms and I think that Froyo ram management suits more to our device.
I hope I was clear, I will explain further when I go on the pc.

Edit: Probably Supercharger script would solve this, but as I failed first time I'm too f***ing lazy to try again

It's a fact. Ginger is smoother in "animations" like pulling down notification bar, keyboard etc...
But Froyo is better for multiple apps.
I'm also experiencing these problems also. My home app is also closing after opening a message from lockscreen..

Yes, ginger is better on animation stuff, but about multitasking, since our X8's RAM is lower, the multitasking experience is worse than froyo
Im just wondering if its the RAM problem, then why it runs well on froyo than gingerbread?
I noticed that some applications spend more memory in GingerDX compared to the FroyoBread such as keyboard, dialer, FroyoBread (app).
Isnt by default dialer, settings, keyboard are always in background? Its a system process so I guess it should always running. Correct me if Im wrong.

Some applications such as Fancy Widgets also spend more memory in GingerDX after boot (15MB vs. 10MB in FroyoBread)
I see so it is really dependent on how many application installed and running in background, i noticed poweramp also eat much memry.

The problem is, thats not just launcher pro its had the modaco RAM hack to move data to NAND. To do that you need root, and when the memory fills up the phone crashes.
If only Samsung could sort this properly in an update this phone would be tops. This whole lag issue is putting me of upgrading from my desire . I really want this phone but there really shouldn't be this issue

Yes there is one hidden thing here: If you have lots of heavy programs like some games, some navigation progs, google earth, you must keep those heavy programs in the old location. I did exactly this - moved to NAND everything except Google Earth, some Gameloft games and navigation. So now I have really fast phone, all my programs, and there is still plenty of space on NAND memory.

What exactly is done to optimize Launcher Pro? Seems to me like the OS got optimized and Launcher Pro is just taking a ride on that performance gain.
This smells like a bull**** ad for Launcher Pro. Does it perform any worse running the vanilla home screen? I seriously doubt it. I even doubt the performance difference is very apparent comparing to TouchWiz.

Thats my video, but not my topic - and the name of the topic is a bit wrong Actually you are partly right - speed increase came from apps data on another partition and memory settings, however Launcher Pro performs faster than TW Launcher even with this optimizations. And I don't see any point in advertising Launcher Pro since its completely free - and even without ads as I can see.

Ofcourse there's a point in advertising free stuff. It sets the bars higher for the commercial stuff.
I don't see how a launcher can start apps faster than another? The "performance difference" I noticed when comparing Launcher Pro to TouchWiz seemed to be the transitions, not the actual loading of apps. While it adds a slight delay, it has nothing to do with performance. TW is a "smoother" experience than Launcher Pro, which is what I like about it (and which is also why I forgive it for looking way too much like iOS).
Would be interesting (but the time needed puts me off the idea ) to make a true comparison of the huge amount of alternative home screens available.

Could you post the steps for this?
The posts about this at Modaco are getting confused, with everyone sharing is way to do it.
I've done this with all apps, but without any games or major apps.
I think you have the best solution for this, just moving the most common apps to NAND.
Thats awesome!
I too would love to know the step by step for this...
Am i to assume with only the common apps moved the 130mb cap causing the phone to crash will never be reached? or?

I posted on the MoDaCo forum on how to do this for Google Earth, it assumes that you followed all of Paul's instructions in the thread (the original data is backed up to data.bak) and that you are familiar with using adb.
adb shell
su
You can check the amount of space utilised by your applications in the /data/data directory by doing the following:
cd /data/data
du -d1
To move Google Earth out of the way
rm -R /data/data/com.google.earth
ln -s /data/data.bak/com.google.earth /data/data/com.google.earth
Disclaimer: If you are uncomfortable doing any of this, don't do it!

Quick question: I am assuming that if you install something big, say Google Earth AFTER you have done Paul's mod, you will then have to move it from dbdata/data to data/data.bak and link it to /data/data from there. As it will go by default to dbdata. Correct?

In my experience, using applications and mods don't work well for me and don't seem to ever have a positive effect on my phone for performance/battery.
One thing I will tell you NOT to do, and it is a common thing, is use a Task Killer. They don't help improve battery life as some say. It's actually argued that it makes it worse.
You can try turning JIT on, and if it's stable for you, then that is supposed to help performance.
(Settings > CM Settings > Performance > Enable JIT) Requires reboot.
A must have is collins_ph battery tweak, getting ridiculous battery life with his tweak (100 or so hours)
Few of my favorites, chrome to phone, voice actions and adb wireless
I do use task killer but autokill is off, I use it when an app freezes
+ 1 on chrome to phone and voice actions. And it's not froyo our even root specific, but awesome drop is a must have as well, I think anyways. Also, I couldn't live without swype or google voice.

+1 Though I'm not a big poster on these forums, I read constantly everyday and am ALWAYS tinkering with different roms, kernels, settings, etc. First and foremost, are you using CM6 or CM6 RC1? I would suggest RC1 if your not already on it. I have been on and off the task killer bandwagon but currently don't use any kind of task management. I don't feel its necessary on froyo and have had good success without it.
Flash google gaaps if you dont have them already if you need gmail and such.
My must haves are ROM Manager, Wireless tether, Beautiful widgets, Chrome to phone, Handcent and as for a browser I use Xscope. X scope is nice cause it has a decent file manager built in, a task manager,(Which I dont use) Download-able themes and a bunch of other goodies as well. OH And I cant forget doodle jump! LOL!
I also am using the Decad3nce V8 kernel but unless you know what your doing I would stay with the stock kernel.
Some have had luck with collins battery tweek, although I have not, (Probably cause I'm not smart enough to set it up! LOL!)
I have used Jit on and Jit off but I haven't really seen much of a difference. I don't think we really have the hardware to make good use of Jit. Although I have google ****s Im kind of a minimalist when it comes to my Hero so I dont like to add too much crap on it!
Good Luck!
chrome to phone is awesome. I use it all the time to send directions to my phone for navigation. Although I haven't used it lately AppBrain is very useful. I don't like ADW Launcher, so I have Launcher Pro Plus,I also installed Beautiful Widgets and Extended Controls which make my homescreen look good. If you can find the apk for fancy widget it also replicates the HTC weather clock, but is no longer in the market.

Send web pages, links, text, directions to your phone from your computer - comes in handy when you don't use adb like me and you can send threads of whatever you are wanting to download... or if you're reading something before work and have to go you can send the link to your phone, etc...

Check my Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fds9eccI9OA
I did a FR before flashing with Kies, and after flashing. Also did a clean install of all apps and settings and a cache wipe.
maybe 50 pics, 50 mp3s and 100 apps and 4 widgets running.
This video was taken just 15 minutes after a reboot.
Do people consider this whining?
EDIT: Spend 6 minutes looking through the video. The lags gets worse and worse.
That is the worst lag I have ever seen, I understand if you are upset, for me the lag is 1-2 second pauses now and then.
Was it as bad on 2.1?
Looks bad. Anyways try getting rid of the batt app that lets you know of the batt percentage on the notifications tray. I got rid of mine and the phone is much quicker.

The icon is just the alarm clock.
Ending all apps does not solve much. The lag returns almost immediately.
Was this lag meant to be so, i mean is it intended to blame the phone? I'm sure this is not normal, and have never seen lag like this. Mostly its 1sec (i know many complain about this) but blink twice and it will load

Not to disparage what you're experiencing there mate but I flashed JP6 yesterday and I can honestly say so far it's been smooth sailing even without any lag-fixes, as opposed to when I was on 2.1 just prior and things were about the same as what you've got here. Hmmmm, the only thing I can think of (and this'll probably sound silly) but you might want to try without a SIM in it. I remember people with Milestones having damaged/faulty SIMs which would cause their phones to slow right down.
Also, sorry but I have to admit I got a good giggle from the fingers tapping at ~4:30 :3

It depends WHAT you are running. In your movie you say stuff like "wow, 5 apps running", but widgetlocker for instance I know slows the phone down a bit.
The number of apps means very little (I can make a computer lag by encoding a video and messing around in photoshop too). It's what you are running that matters. Maybe you should try to work out which applications are causing issues (there is a good reason why I got rid of widgetlocker though).
Anyway, this thread should be closed as a dupe. It doesn't warrant it's own thread, as you aren't a celebrity, and other people have already posted video's onto the existing threads.Your case is no more important than the others.

Wasn't running anything after fresh boot. The video is from first screen taps on this freshly booted phone.
EDIT: Removing Widget Locker does not help... Tried that.
here it's unbelievable stable(jpk+oclf+4wks+120apps), guess it was a wise choice not going jp6/m.
But why are there 5 apps active? I have several active widgets but they don't show up as a regular process(es) here.. I'm sure that my phone would lagg too while running 2 games, 2 web browsers and navigational software on the background. =/
I doubt it was acting like this from flash off right?

Well.. That's my point.. Your apps must be doing something that is sucking up your CPU... because I'm running Messaging, Launcherpro, Jabberoid (not listed in active apps), sipdroid (not listed in active apps), and a live wallpaper. I suspect that your apps are possibly running a few things not listed in task manager.. Also, are you running custom widgets (I'm not using any, which might be adding to the jumpiness). I also only have 50 apps.
I have noticed your app list contains MANY custom widgets..
So, I suggest working out what specifically is causing your issues. But I can honestly say I don't get lag like that on my phone..

Well, the apps "running" in task manager are only the six most recent apps. I am only using 4-5 widgets on this video. I have also tried without any widgets. Same problem.

You guys should check out this script V6 SuperCharger !! HTK & BulletProof Launchers!
I'm not sure that many of you know about this script... I recently ran into it.
XDA Thread Link. It's called V6 Supercharger. If you wanna read all the nitty gritty go for it. I'll just tell you what to do for those that just wanna jump to it. It is developed for the Milestone, but memory configuration works about same.
Get this file right here and rename it so as to remove the .txt extension (it was added to allow upload on XDA).
Now move that file into your SD card.
Open up [or first download if needed] Script Manager.
Run the script that you have in your SD card, and be SURE to check 'Run as Root' as WELL as 'Run at Boot'.
When the prompt comes you can read the different presets there are. However, I strongly suggest going with just typing 2 and press enter. It will fix your current memory groupings and put your default launcher as priority 0 with apps and stuff at 2 [meh not exact but something like that].
Then it will tell you to reboot after all the scrolling of text. Do, so. I swear I don't ever get a single lag spike anymore.
THANKS zeppelinrox
(I had nothing to do with this script, just referring you guys to it).

I wonder if this will fix the launcher lag on Virus ROM B .1.1 someone try it out and post back results.
Yeah, I'm interested in the Launcher part, because regardless of Android version or rom, ADW and LP always freeze on me whenever I restart the phone.
It typically fixes itself after a force close so it's a not a huge issue, but it'd be nice to get rid of it.

Messed up my stuff a bit. Had to undo. Oh well.

read throught the OOM (out of memory) mappings within the script and try a different memory range. I would say try option 1 or 3 then... But there are 3 others with less aggressive groupings.

1. Open Settings>Developers Options>Force GPU Rendering(enable it)
2. Kill all the background apps(long press Home key and swipe all away)
3. Restart the phone.
You will surely notice a bump of improvement.
Recognizable improvements in: Facebook, Twiiter, Whats-app, XDA, Gmail etc...
Let me know if it worls!
Cheers!

this just hides the most recent apps. it does not kill any background process

Besides, most (if not all) apps that appear there are cached and they are not actually running. Exceptions are some apps that insist on having useless services running all day (for example, facebook, eats around 7-8mb RAM while doing nothing). The more cached processes you actually have, the faster these apps will launch so it doesn't make much sense to go and kill them all.
Unix works the same way. Currently on my computer with 8GB RAM running only Chromium and Pidgin (an IM app) it says I am using 6573mb of RAM! Is that possible? Well, I actually use 570mb but the rest are all cache. Since unused RAM = wasted RAM, it caches disk files I use all the time for faster access. Nothing is lost and you gain some speed. I am pretty sure Windows does the same too, at Task Manager under the CPU/RAM graphs is a small box with RAM usage, I remember it saying 'Cache' there too, but it doesn't add it to the 'Used' RAM counter so you think it's really really empty.
What does enabling Force GPU rendering do to the battery life?

Restarting the phone would clear all the background apps anyway

Did not see a difference. But it's not smoother though...
Problem is you will break apps that aren't yet ready for hardware acceleration.
Facebook performs much better

maybe can make some unstable apps, maybe it's better to wait for all apps support ics and their "api"

I want what you say to be true, but there are some apps that aren't just cached but actually have background services running.
When you go an flick them off that apps list it doesn't just free up the ram from the cached activity but also the background services that were spawned from it. With some of the apps I launch it's noticeable if I clean up those old activities first.
try aosp+ by androiduser and flash eugene's icup kernel. you'll be surprised that speed is comparable to gb
Any difference you'll notice should be just placebo =]
Well this was a misleading thread. Whole bunch of nuthin.
The best way to speed up ics is to flash vhgomez's 1.2 or Crossbones rom, along with Eugene's Speedy3 kernel.

Not true. Op is correct. Swiping them DOES kill the process.
Flashing a different kernel increases the speed alot. I'm using eugene's ICUP speedy 3 kernel and it's really fast!
