What do you mean isn't gingerbreak a root for the iconia or is iconiaroot a program?

Yeah, they should sticky the iconiaroot thread as that is by far the easiest root method I've seen on any Android device I've ever owned.

There's a stickied "rollup" thread which has a link to the various rooting methods. All people have to do is read it.

Eh, I found the Iconiaroot thread before the roolup thread was started, so never even noticed it. Honestly, I never saw the rollup thread until you mentioned.

It's not like it's hard to find... It's the first sticky in the dev forum...

Make sure that the external SD is mounted and visible.

Black Screen of Death or root issue?
so im new to this whole root thing and i have to say im never doing it again, ive searched for 3 hours trying to figure out how to do it but wound up like a dog chasing his tail but in anycase this is my issue, i tried to do what someone said and put a zip file on my sd card and update it from the recovery menu,so i did the exact thing it said and the software was apparantly for my phone so i didnt think anythoung bad can happen if something didnt work....well turns out while updating it failed, shut off now when i press the power button the touch buttons go on and the light for the screen goes on but there is no image or function,my laptop wont recognize it,i did the battery pull probably thousands of times and everything else ive read and nothing works...so wtf do i do because this is some really frustrating ****...btw i also have a phone no one apparantly heard of its the huawei u8651t..any advice as to what i possibly can do would be appreciated,if nothing can be done then i have something to blow up with an m-80

Well, honestly, I have no idea what type of device you are messing with. You reference a phone all the time, and this is the Iconia A500 Tablet forum. I suppose you are messing with the Huawei? If so, you won't be able to find much help here.
It would be better if you posted in the proper forum if possible, or look at this thread;

Unfortunately, there is not a dedicated forum for your device, the the Android General Q&A may be your only option.

I need root for dummies

So far my transformer has been the hardest device for me to root. I'm not hugely knowledgable with computers but I've managed to root all of my other devices. Some were very easy like my old captivate ans some weren't so easy like my aria or the nexus s I had. I now have an atrix which i managed to root also. But when it comes to the transformer, wow, this thing to me seems to be alot tougher to root.
Maybe its just me, ive never claimed to be very bright but have gotten by with common sense and street knowledge. Neither of which are helping me to root this thing.
I'm not a quitter though, i will keep trying until I either get it rooted or break it trying. Its 3 am here, time for bed. Will post my issues later today and hope for help.
Thanks for your time in reading about my frustrations.

Did you see this guide (assuming you're on HC 3.1)? It's the only method I know of to root a TF.
[EDIT]: Alternatively, if you're in to installing custom ROMs, you could install this ROM via the nvflash tool. It's not hugely difficult and it'll root your TF in the process.

I wasin the same boat as you yesterday man. But i have lots of pc experience, but have never rooted anything before. After reading several guides and deciding to just leave my tf stock, I stumbled onto the thread that jon posted for you. It was really easy to do, and work exactly the way it was supposed to. Yesterday i rooted, flashed Netformer's kernel, and juiced it up with setcpu. All in one day! These started out being kinda hard to root, but now its pretty straight forward. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Im starting to realize thru reading some of the posts that windows 7 64bit has some issues with downloading apx drivers. Ive ran in to this issue while trying to use both methods. Ive read that quite a few others are having the same problem. I'm glad its not just me.
But if im wrong about this then hopefully i will get it figured out. Going to try my win vista pc tomorrow and see if that works.
Thanks again for your reply.

Did Acer kill the Iconia?

It just seems like they made it impossible to root , reverting back is fine I suppose and searching for other roms (which may or may not be stable ,use at your own risk) !
Ive seen some of the smartest people in XDA and I cant seem to figure out why other tablets using the same updates have been rooted but not the iconia ? The writing is on the wall for this tablet , expect to see a new version soon (just in time for Christmas)!
First, wrong section; you should know better by now.
Second, just because Acer have made it a bugger to root, doesn't mean the tablet is dead. It's absolutely useable without being rooted, and 99% of consumers don't actually give a monkeys about rooting, or even know what it actually is.
Hell, we get plenty of people on here asking what it is or what it's for...
New iconia is scheduled for Dec release but may get pushed back to january.
Interesting, you are posing that on XDA. We dont believe in Impossible to Root device. That is why people come to XDA; How to break what seem unbreakable or unlock what seem unlock-able. Just give some time, some genius will always find a way to kick some Corporate teeth in.
well wasnt it acer excuse not unlock the bootloader since honeycomb was not open source. I think that was one of their statements, so once we get updated to ICS maybe we all can start with a tweet assault on them again.
Not sure about u guys but I feel more comfortable recommending the xoom or asus tab just cause they are so open, same goes for those nook colors.

You should look at the older phones like the Desire and before that if you think its hard to root here, you'd probably cry at the thought of creating a gold card.
How people complain that a rooting process that takes all of 15 minutes and a couple of reboots is hard is beyond me. In 3.1 and below all you have to do is download a file from the market. In 3.2 you have to run one update file from recovery, install the aforementioned files from the market, then flash one of the ROMs from here - such as the completely stable completely standard 3.2 ROMs, or the excellent and completely stable Thor ROMs. If that's too difficult for people then maybe they shouldn't be attempting it on something that cost them £300.

LOL - that was exactly was I was thinking after reading the first post. I have got a Desire and rooted it with goldcard etc. - long before the newer and way easier methods were developed.
Yesterday I got my Iconia 501 with Stock HC 3.2 on it and rooting it was a real breeze
Seriously? Near impossible to root? This guy must be slow, because this was just insanely easy... been rooted for months and tried nearly every rom at least once, all easy as pie.

Same thing with the original mytouch. I had to use a gold card and there were no less than 3 times during the process that i thought i had bricked it. i may be permanently scarred.
There have been many times i have rooted other devices including the iconia that i went searching for more steps because it was too easy.
ya i have the Desire S too and waited for ages for it to be rooted, the Iconia only took me a few minutes, don't really see what the difficulty is, thought this was an old thread haha
ne too lol i was like...all i did was install an app, go to recovery, and flash rom ( give or take a few steps) and i did that the day i got it (sept 2011) and it took a few a mins, this thread confused the heck outta me lol

This is inbwrong thread sorry for my post all
I rooted my tablet right after I got it in May. Then when the 3.2 update came out, I went back to stock unrooted and ran that way until this morning when I realized I wanted to change my navigation buttons. Downgraded, rooted, installed CWM and flashed the rooted stock 3.2 and was back in business in like 20 minutes maybe. Would've been done quicker, but I had to pause to make some more coffee. Didn't even lose any of my data or apps. I don't know how you measure easy, but by my measure, its a cake walk. A cake walk where you actually win cake, instead of awkwardly shuffling around in a circle with strangers thinking that if you win it might all be worth it, only to have some snot nosed little turd walk away with the very cake you wanted, and you go home and weep gently into your pillow because you never win, and no one ever seems to see that all you want is to be loved, oh God, why can't someone just love you...sorry I digress.
lol i rooted mine like the first 15 minutes that it was out of the box. I don't like not overclocking

Back to the OT! Did Acer Kill the Iconia?
Here it is.... Plain and simple.... Acer is killing the the Iconia since they are taking their time to produce good accessories for it. Also, what were they thinking in giving the power adapter such a short cord?
Other than that.... I love my A500, and would not mind upgrading to a the Tegra3 version.

don't be sorry...
because you helped ME! i have a sprint galaxy tab and have not done anything with it since i got my gnote, so i have been searcing for how to root this thing...it did update once ota (i think--i have the whole set of tabs, and a captivate--it gets a bit confusing going from one to the other, i just tried using a non existent touch screen on my pc...) so i will try this. how did it go for you? mine is not activated thru sprint, i use it wireless only and cannot wait to get the sprint crap off of it!
You should already be on EF17 Gingerbread. Do this one instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161033&highlight=sprint
It doesn't matter if you are using 3G or not.
As I found out! I was getting frustrated until I realized that everything I found was going in a big loop to nowhere! Thanks for your input, i REALLY appreciate it, and will let you know how I do!
EDIT:
Just a quick question... Do I need to worry about these downloads to my pc as far as malware? I did download some files that came back as a threat with my anti virus - - files that were for ClockworkMod or even a whole kit to root a device (my tab--but i figured out they were for the version before the update that i have now) , but i think it is because it is software that roots android, and not because it is a real threat. I do worry about some of these download sites with the 'download' links all over the place... And only one of them is the file we need (i know how to tell the difference but still I can make a mistake - - My virus protection has indeed saved my ass a few times) any words of advice about this?
thanks again!

No, no need to worry, they are false positive.

I just accepted the install and it automatically gives an error because my phone is rooted and is running a custom ROM. The error screen is the exclamation point inside the triangle with the little android guy next to it. After you get this screen, just pop out the battery and restart. Biggoron(and anyone else on these forums) are not here to "tell us how to fix it". And if I read his post, I see instructions on how to stop the notification, what else do you want? It gets old answering the same question over and over again in different threads. Especially when all you have to do is scroll down page 1 or click on page 2 to find the answer.
If you do a backup and restore you will get the notification again. I have 2 Epics and have gone 5 days without notification.

Yep, it works. Accept the install, the phone reboots, you get a blue droid and an exclamation point. Now take out the battery, turn on the phone.. it took me to CWM where I choose to reboot system. Its back up 100%. This rom is awesome.
I agree, people need to read the other thread before posting. BUT, last I read, people are still getting the notification...including me. I've pulled the battery after the botched install and it took 5 days for the message to come back up.

Yes, indeed. I was working with a A100 that had some problems and kinda stumbled upon this. Didn't fully read. Any suggestions?
Well, it makes a nice conversation starter as a paperweight....
Seriously, your best bet is if it can reset to recovery, try an acer stock rom (the one your tab came with), otherwise jtag (haven't seen any mention of this in this forum, a lot in others) or return to Acer... It could be expensive...
Wish people would ask questions, before they did something silly.
Suppose no sense in asking if they got their UID number before they installed?
Rule #1. If ANY rom contains the file "bootloader.blob" stay away from it, until you get the right procedues.
Rule #2. ADB is your friend.
Rule #3. If you don't know what it is, or what it does, don't mess with it. Let the Dev's handle it.
No, I was actually in the middle of cooking out when I tried this. I can get it exchanged easily.
