Battery life is based on you personal usage, how much your personal radio is cycling through radio bands, the ROM and the kernel... There is no way for anyone but you to tell how things are going to work our on any ROM... Flash away until you find what you are looking for and stick with it! Or you could always buy an iPhone...

Agreed, stripped down vanilla aosp is gonna be great on battery life. Not my cup of tea though, best battery life ive found is miui, royalginger and cm7.

[ROM] (v1.2.9_r2) CM Nexus Gingerbread 2.3.5 - Faux123 [Aug-07-2011] has had very good battery life for me and good performance too; easily beats stock sense.

TDJ's MIUI Rom has been my daily driver for a while now. With setCPU profiles I have gone almost 2 days.
Proof- as you can see, right around 18 and a half hours I plugged in for about an hour. That's it. So roughly 1 day 20 hours.

This one here was a day of heavy use and calibrating my battery. Had everything on...GPS, BT, Wi-Fi etc..

How do you get such great battery life? I'm using TDJ's MIUI ROM as well, but only get a maxmium of 20 hours (I barely use my phone).

That answer depends on so many factors. What apps you have and how often they access or sync the network, distance from cell towers, signal strength etc. I also have some great profiles setup in setCPU as well.
I've been testing and experimenting for years. Just trial by error.

Let's see:
3 Homescreens
Facebook sync is OFF, gmail sync is on (contacts + gmail)
GOWeather widget in the homescreen, as well as a picture frame widgets
I do not have ANY cell signal where I live...
Everything turned off besides WiFi, Rotation, Lock, Vibrate, and mid-brightness
WiFi calling is on
I do have an MIUI theme (the Phazon one)
Lots of apps, but I barely use them and none of them need constanct connection to the internet.
Always receive MMS is enable (have no idea what this does)

Just like CBConsultation, i've managed to get way over 1day on my phone running on MIUI, so that would be my first choice, then next would defiantly be Faux's AOSP ROM as a close 2nd. Even though I haven't used faux's rom recently due to the powers of the dark miui preventing me from switching w/o guilt. I've almost reached 2 days once, but I use games and other apps that suck up juice, so that's not happening. I use my phone as a phone, my ipod touch replacement, psp replacement, smartphone, gps, bluetooth thing, and what not. And I am overclocked but at the same time i've lowered the volts thru to negate the extra power drain of 1.4GHz as my max-and I use the new ondemandX governor, not sure what's new in the x version but I like it.

I use 3 homescreens as well. I now use Simi Clock for my clock and weather and set to sync every hour. Before I was using Beautiful Widgets. I have Wi-Fi on all the time as well. Rotation is on, brightness set to usually 25 or 50%
I use my own custom theme [dark themed and minimal the way I like it].
I use FB and have it and Twitter set to 2 hours. Gmail always on and syncing 12 labels. Lots of apps but no connection required unless it's open/running.
My MMS is set to always receive. That means that you can receive multi-media messages [like pics] any time.
Just takes time to mess with all your settings and apps. Kernel and governor makes a difference too.

Aosp FTW
Try Cm7,Royal Ginger, Generation X (my personal favorite), or one of Faux123 awesome roms with he made from scratch with out cm7 source code-but if you like sense but want 22+ hour battery life try Royal Glacier (stock sense) Royal thunder (thunderbolt port) or Royal Senseless.

Blah. I've tried them all and they can't touch MIUI. Seriously, I really have flashed and tried all of those and MIUI is the best when it comes to battery. CM7 would be second as I used that for a long time as well and got great battery life on it. But the others IMHO are not nearly as polished or as good as MIUI.
MIUI is a fluid user experience. Every aspect can be custom tailored to the way you like it. Most if not all those other Rom's are basically the same old same old. Sense to the core.
Don't get me wrong, it's OK but sense framework is inherently bloat prone and slow. All the sense Rom's just don't compare to the fluidity of the entire UI of MIUI.
BTW: if you decompile AOSP you will find that even that is based off sense. Like the G2X. It was supposed to be pure Android when in fact its core has sense underpinnings.

Rom with best battery life

I'v been searching for this topic, and cannot find anything. Hows your battery life on this phone and how do you make it better? I heard CM7 is amazing, but I love Sense to much to give it up.
Try ice glacier I just started running it and its just like sense without the bloat, and with some optimizations. I get great battery life with ice glacier paired with SetCPU.

IGv1.1.6 seems much more stable and using less battery than IGv1.1.5. Haven't setup SetCPU yet as I am just cURLing close to 8.1gb apk.lib archive. Let me be finish ill thoroughly test it, but seems better than before.

Yeah, that'll be my next thing to set up, I haven't even downloaded setcpu this time around. Very impressed with getting this much life out of it though, when compared to stock barely getting me through the workday.

CM7 = CyanogenMod 7 (AOSP2.3.1/Gingerbread) ATM its still under alpha and many things needs to be worked out as I use to flash it nightly before IGv1.1.6 its still under RC so wait for the SR if you want it to make it your own stable rom.
my experience so far..
MIUI i get 1.5 days on a single full charge....
evil's desire hd rom id get about .5 days on single full charge, needed a charger.
both had setcpu with just the screen off profile and set to 1.5 ghz oc...
im sure CM7 has pretty good battery life.
BTW for those of you who is saying you get this and that show me screenshot of your awake time don't matter about what you get on uptime.
Battery was at 56% when I shot the image below. Phone is stock and unrooted. It's my wife's, mine doesn't last as long since I'm always playing with it. I'll root mine (maybe) in the future when I get sick of all the bloat (already there).

You saying you OCed 1.7GHz and ran for 16hours? LOL no way man and why do you need 1.7ghz? ATM my SetCPU scale profile for mCPU is max: 1.6ghz/avg: 1ghz/idle: 768mhz and I get around let say 16-17hours. But no way are you getting 16hours running it at 1.7GHZ native unless thats your max on demand or something.

XDA app took 2% of your battery... I love it!
I would also have to vote for CM7. I've tried every other rom and CM7 is best on battery and its also the BEST ROM out there all around!
I have a combination of the stock rom from t mobile and Gr8gorilla I just finished the mod yesterday and so far so good on the battery life.

Ice glacier v1.1.6 with granks kernel v.05 always gave me around 18 hours, and I'm on it pretty good. I'm on CM7 build #16 and its giving me the same if not better than the glacier setup. I use setCPU on both.
i'm on CM7#19 and i am getting good hour usage. i have BT and GPS on always and i'm still getting like 12-15 hours per on good use. along with crappy signal at home so i'm happy.

Ice Glacier v1.1.4 (includes Gorilla's v05 kernel), SetCPU to overclock to 1401 MHz (Performance) and to underclock (when screen is off) to 368 MHz (Powersave).
I make anywhere between 15-70 minutes worth of calls a day, so some days are better than others. Heavy Facebook, SMS messages, XDA, Engadget, etc. Consistently getting 15 hours of battery and my best to date is 1 day 9 hours 5 minutes on a single charge...

I usually get over 24 hours with moderate usage everyday!
If you check the attached picture, you'll see that I got like 1 day and a few hours on that charge! Then I was learning how to take a snapshot of the screen and the phone was charging in the mean time...
but after that 1 day and 4 hours or so, I still had around 29-30% battery left...
how did you take that snapshot of your screen?

Yeah, I'm a big fan of "lean and mean" so I use Screen Shot a lot (by GikSoft). If there was an icon in the Notif area for ShootMe, it looks like it's gone now; and I don't see an option to enable/disable it in ShootMe.
Someone might laugh at it, but I went ahead and started a "How To Take A Screenshot" thread for our forum...

It's such a simple thing to do, but so many people ask how to do it. I figured a separate thread would help keep other threads from filling up.

Is there any advantage to setting it to underclock to 368 instead of 245? I would think setting it to 245 would conserve even more battery life...?
No disadvantage other than when the CPU ramps back up from the screen being off. I just wait about 1 second before unlocking my screen, but I'm a little OCD about my device performing as smooth as glass. Even though I know WHY it's a little slow when ramping back up, I just don't like to "feel" it go slowly.
I've been watching Faux's thread and I really dig what he's doing, how transparent he's being, etc. The performance coming from screen-off to screen-on is supposed to be a smoother with that kernel and what he's done to it.
I love my ROM and the way my device performs, so I sort of don't want to change a good thing. That being said, we all know why we got into Android in the first place.

I'm running Yoshi. 3.9MFlops and the only thing that is sometimes glitchy is the keyboard. I use Swype beta and it seems a bit more unstable than the swype that comes with t-mobile's OTA 2.2 rom.
I'm using yoshi and it's great. I'm tempted to try out beatmod. Which would you consider faster? What I would like to have is the fastest ginger rom. Would you suggest another one?

BeatMod Rocks..
Hi All,
I have used all the three Ginger ROMs
COS-DS... has too much customizations, everything working.. but its slow now n then, if you try to open contacts or want to call or message its very slow then.
except that its pretty stable and clean.
Yoshi -I think this is much faster ROM then COS-DS, except the USB thether won't work and i need it most for my desktop. Stable and Fast but the Problem is the RAM is always full (says 0 bytes free..) oops.
BeatMod - i started to use this ROM only recently and everything works.. fast and stable. The CM parts are missing but extra parts does its work and the default CPU speed is 595Mhz. , 25Mb of RAM is always free atleast so pretty fast and stable. The thing is i can run ANGRY BIRDS on this ROM.. tried on the other two but unsuccessful...
So my vote goes to BeatMod.
Keep up the work.

Almost pure aosp as well...
With yoshi, you have to enable compcache and/or swap manually during install (and then setup comcache in the OS settings)... they're not enabled and on by default.
For those with A rev boards (rev A and 1.2) ram is not an issue with no comp cache or swap (I have 100MB free normally).
I've been using yoshi now for a while and I have yet had the urge to try something else. New version coming out soon too.
Battery life with BeatMod
I am using BeatMod Ginger version 2.2, Today i tried to test howz the battery life and here the results.. and i am quite surprised..
GPS and GPRS was on..
See for youself.
surprised about what? Not seeing anything noticeable except that your battery power looks half drained or more in just 19 hours of what looks like not really using the phone at all.
Sitting idle i would expect the phone to have about 3-4 hours per % of battery power. so you should still be well in the 90+% battery power range
well, the point was tht with previous ROMs yoshi, COS-DS and cyanogenmod. i was getting like 6hours even in idle.. yes, the problem is battery its almost dead now(its the original battery came with phone)..
Even if i keep idle by mrng its dead before alarm with all the 3 ROMS mentioned above. So i was quite surprised with the BeatMod results.
I don't mean the other ROMs are not good, I do appreciate the authors/owners of the ROM for their hardwork and making us keep our G1.
If you have your cpu set to 122Mhz when idle (even better if you have a profile set to make it 122 all the time when screen is off) , turn off 3G , turn off wifi and set your screen brightness to 25% or less then your idle battery power should be well around the 400 hour range. Profiles and widgets can be used to turn and modify those things when you're actually using the phone so it's not slow and useless
Even without some of those precautions (i dont have profiles for cpu freq scaling and i left 3g on) my battery is down 3% in 10 hours... so still around 300 hours idle.
R u still using the G1 Battery if not which is the best battery in market ( ebay or Amazon) for G1 which can come atleast 10hours with heavy usage.. ( music, GPRS, GPS and browsing).

dont remember the swap size setting that came up during the flash, but said yes and works very well.
after getting all set up, fixed permissions and did a final reboot before entering into daily driver operation. its possible i left somethings out
phone has NEVER...(echo...) been faster or more stable.
One vote for Yoshi and my end user tinkering (ha ha)
Running Yoshi RC7. (problems with RC7.1 and 7.1.1) Still, my phone's never been snappier and I'm happy to have Tap Tap (even if it's at 3 fps at times) So there's one more vote for Yoshi.

Best battery life ROM?

I'm trying to deal with cm7 but little things are killing me (battery life stinks even with extended battery, I watch my battery fall with the screen on, it's good when it's not though. Constant problems with my lock screen freezing, etc). I'd like to find a rom thats 100% stable, aosp is preferred, but not a must. Any recommendations?
Thanks

I alway found CM6 and Miui 2.2 roms to give great battery. Not sure if you were looking to stay with gingerbread though...
Cm7 just isn't as good as cm6 that's all I will say. My battery life on cm7 was not so great. I switched to miui for the first time yesterday and my 10hrs turned into 15hrs already with 50% left. Usually in about 10hrs my cm7 is on about 10% left. I actually have a pic to prove it lol.

With CM7, I usually get 12 hours to 50%, 18-20 hrs to 20%. If your battery life is that bad, I would try calibrating that battery and checking for wakelocks.
Also, try decks gingerbread which is based on CM7, but gets better battery life. You can find it under the thread "yet another AOSP ginger ROM."

With CM7, I usually get 12 hours to 50%, 18-20 hrs to 20%. If your battery life is that bad, I would try calibrating that battery and checking for wakelocks.

+1 to this, I get great battery life with Deck's
I installed cm6.1.2 and so far all is well. I don't really have any reasons to stay with ginger bread, the only thing I even noticed from it was the screen off animation. I rarely use 4g, so its not a big loss on that. Any recommended kernels for cm6.1.2?

I'm all about Tiamat
Destroyer v 2 with savage zen kernal and I can make it two full days with mild-moderate use. Heavy use will still make it all day. By far this is the best battery life I've gotten.
When I switched to Tiamat I started getting great battery life on CM7. I can get 18+ hours on it, easy.
can you still use CM7 themes with decks?
I get 15 hours with cm7 SZ kernel with moderate use
When I check the batt stats in settings, "phone standby " always has over 50% someone knows why?
This has been looking good and it was just updated this morning with no issues..

Buy 5 batteries then you will never be out of power.
CM7 (every nightly) and latest Tiamat. I leave BT and WIFI on always, without *trying* to preserve battery, and I easily last from 7AM to 7PM with no charging... running pandora for at least an hour in the morning off WIFI, and some in-car BT Pandora streaming... no 4G use, and tons and tons of texts and internet browsing. Same use on other kernels would have killed my phone in 4 hours easily. I used to be able to watch the battery indicator drop. Sense ROMS were pretty bad too.
Whats wakelocks?
Deck's + Tiamat = win

I suggest finding a kernal for your rom. Tiamat is a great choice.
Also, are you coming from sense? If so, resetting your battery stats might help.
I've had great luck with Vaelpak 3.2 rc1 and rc2, both with there stock kernel and 4.3.2 CFS SBC HAVS MORE. I mainly use my phone for texting and Facebook. On a typical day of moderate texting, Facebook and a few hours of calls I'm getting roughly 16 hours. If I use juicedefender and setcpu I can stretch it out even more. Vaelpak 3.2 is a non-sense rom and is very stable. Out of 4 or 5 roms that I have used this is the most complete and full Rom were everything works. Been using vaelpak for over a month now and haven't found anything better...
Evo 4g
Vaelpak 3.2 RC2
This has been my biggest struggle so far as well. Finding a rom that is both useful and does not kill my battery...I just rooted last weekend and so far have tried at least 5 roms looking for the one that I really get along with and like the looks of, etc. All I cal say so far about roms and such is trial and error...keep flashing till you find one that fits.

Experiences with MIUI

I thought that I would give MIUI a go since I have read great things about it. I have been using CM for a very long time now, so I wasn't expecting to be blown away.
Overall I am pretty impressed with a few caveats. The interface is very nice and I especially like how the notifications drop out of the bar up top, like when you get a text message. I don't need to use handcent anymore to say the least. The built in theme manager is cool and overall the think the menus are easier to use then most roms.
Anyways, the main issue is speed and battery. I read great things about speed but I just don't see it. The homescreen lags, apps are slow to open, and things always seem to lock up on me. I didn't restore from titanium backup, I started fresh. I'm running Savaged Zen 2.2 as my kernel, but the speed seems sluggish no matter the kernel.
The battery life isn't as great as it was on CM7 either. I can barely.make it through a day on MIUI.
Any tips for improving performance before I leap back to CM?
I would stay with Miui for a couple of days and I guarantee you that the battery life will get better, also I would try using tiamat, or godmode kernel they are great.

How do you change your kernal and which is the best?

Download kernel.
Put into root directory of sd card.
Boot into recovery
Nand backup (because you never know)
Wipe cache and dalvik cache
Flash kernel
Reboot
Evo HW 003
MIUI 1.5.27 with Tiamat 4.0.3 sbc
Cut Corners theme
Miui is awesome but the lag just kills me. I've tried every kernel out there and nothing changed lol.

Just flashed miui last night, wanted to see what it was all about. Took me a lil bit to get everything set up but now it's running smooth for me. Lovin it except battery life is killing me, unplugged it just 15 min ago and it dropped 30 percent. Ill probably run this for a week or two then nand back over to synergy or kingdom. Overall though I love the menus of this rom and all the different settings.
Battery dropped another 8 percent in the time it took me to type this.

Try using setcpu with the tiamat 4.0.5 kernel. Maybe your cpu is constantly pegged at its highest frequency so its killing the battery. With set CPU installed I had my Max at 1113 and min at 384 running smartass; I easily got 24 hours with moderate usage. Also download spareparts from the market and make sure your end button has the phone set to sleep.
Here's the free setcpu for xda users.

Here's the tiamat kernel.

I've used many kernals (mostly CM and MIUI) as they tend to have the least amount of clutter.
I've been very happy with MIUI (been on it for over 5 months) when I used to flash a new rom almost daily.
I've found MIUI (more than any other rom) has "finiky" issues with installs.
If you've not done it, I'd recommend doing a complete wipe using Caulkin Format All and Format Temp, fresh install of miui (reboot 3 times after you install it, helps get rid of some fo the chinese crap), flash a kernal of your choice (i've been rocking tiamit 4.0.5 sbc) and then configure your phone and set it all up.
I love the fact that you can have folders on your home screen (that show the icons of the content) however, it doesnt hide your status bar (I think it's stupid to have the clock show twice).
I use launcher pro and folder organizer ( available on market) and love it.
I have a very minimalistic layout with everything grouped neatly.
if you've not used MIUI, try it! Stiff is amazing!

Tiamat 4.0.4 is the best i have used on MIUI. Savage have never been smooth for me. Overclock to 1152 and it rocks.

Everything seems to work just fine for me with the latest update. I haven't tried Navigation, but my GPS locks almost instantly, so I suppose it would work just fine. It seems like GPS is the biggest problem.
I still have the bug where the automatic brightness doesn't work correctly. I have just set the brightness somewhere and forgot about it. It seems to work correctly for others though. Guess it might have something to do with the kernel though.

Another easy way is to use Kernel Manager from the Market. He has all the most popular kernels listed there. It is a breeze.
try tiamat kernel 3.3.7 which seems to work the best for most people or try the latest one which is 4.0.5. I'm using the latest one with vipermod which is a tool to lower voltages and it's great.
