I'm on DJ Steve's steak droid v1.9 and it came with Swype. Now I want to upgrade Swype, but to do so I need to first uninstall the existing one. I've tried uninstalling from the Apps list like any other program, but this one does not have that option. So, there must be a way to manually uninstall it from Root Explorer.
How?

There are 18 other threads that show up if you use the SEARCH THIS FORUM button from this page and type in "uninstall swype", maybe there is an answer there?
Sorry, but I HAD searched. From the XDA app on my phone. The search results were/are vastly different, and don't provide a solution. I had assumed one search function was as good as the other.

Just use a root level file explorer and use the software's built-in search to find and manually delete all the Swype files you find.
As I recall, there are about 5-7 files (library files, etc.) you need to remove.
Done.

When I browse XDA from my phone I use the stock browser so I never encountered that problem.

This probably works... Use Titanium Backup to delete unwanted 'system' apps. If you backup the old version of Swype before deleting, you can restore it if you don't like the beta.

Anyone know of a free alternative to root explorer??? I suppose I could take the time to rm -r all through the terminal emulator... but that would take quite a while....

if you want a file manager astro is good. if you want the frills of root explorer, then get it. i prefer just using astro for file manager, and adb for everything else, but x users cant have custom recovery, and most x usere so not have adb set up.
and easy root methods are good for people who are not good with adb, but since android IS linix, you and the shell will cross paths evwntually.
ps. sorry if i came off strongly amd made lots of typos.

Here's a very easy way to gain root access to your Nand HD builds. Some have mentioned something called z4root from the market but every time i put that in search it couldn't find it. What i DID find was an app called Super Manager that works like a charm and has many functions such as task manager, apk manager, file explorer, and app back up. What you want to do first is go to settings(where you can access just about anything..shake capture, full screen mode, font size..etc.)then go to 'enable root function'. After that, you'll be able to go into root explorer..and enjoy.
If you can't find them on the market, you can always find them HERE
hey thanks lude. that page must have eluded me cause i had no idea it existed..probably because i never really checked the android only pages. i usually hovered around the hd2 android pages.anyways,thanks.i have one question for you..i hear allot about busybox but i'm not exactly sure what it is..or the magic behind it. could you explain?

Basically it gives you additional unix/linux commands so you can deploy different tasks at the root level. Similarly, it's like having a registry editor in windows for you to slice and dice around.

Not working
So I thought that liberty 1.5 did not have working swype. I managed to delete the swype.apk, and now I can not get swype to re-install.
Is there an easy way to do it? TY
Either restore a NANdroid backup if you have one or you'll have to SBF. I got rid of the preloaded swype and loaded the beta since it is a newer version. I added the extension ".bak" to all the necessary swype files that way if I need to get them back i can.
I think I got the beta version loaded, but I get a swype force close message everytime I restart my phone. If I boot into bootstrap and install liberty from .zip again what will happen?

If you install liberty again you will get swype back, but it will overwrite any modifications you have made since.the initial.install. use the liberty toolbox to do a full app/data backup and just restore it.after you reinstall liberty

Adam, im noy sure if this is the version of swype that comes on the X, but if not, please dont post links, as XDA can get in trouble as swype put out an order/notice to not distibute versions of swype beta's or releases not originally intended for certain devices. Just an fyi, and my apologies if this is the correct version! Just didnt want you getting in trouble with swype or xda

Thanks for providing good guidance. Standalone Swype APKs were specifically forbidden in Swype's correspondence with XDA. The only legitimate way to provide Swype is as part of a ROM per said correspondence:
Inclusion of Swype in ROMs for devices which come with Swype preinstalled, where the version of Swype matches the version distributed with the device and all licensing mechanisms remain intact, and where the user is not infringing on any third party copyrights or other intellectual property rights or violating any third party (e.g., a device manufacturer or carrier) terms of service;

I have cleaned up the linked thread and moved this thread to General.
So the previous method of #*#*307*#*# no longer worked after I went through downgrading through 3 freaking ROM versions just to have 340 build on my streak. I was PISSED! Some research uncovered the following:
With either ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro (I did it with LP) - Just press an open area like adding a widget.
1. Choose "Shortcut"
2. Choose "Activity"
3. Scroll the resulting list. There will be an EMList entry, under that and EMList installer and an EMList uninstaller.
4. Choose the installer - Click the new widget and the screen will flash & return.
Now go look in the app draw for EMList. The tool has a entry near the bottom (#30) for "App Security" - Update Unknown Resource Property Toggle that on.
Now go to settings, applications... There it is! The entry for allowing Non-Market Apps has been returned.
5. Jot a quick email to AT&T. Subject line = "Bite Me!"
Use these "Engineering Mode Tools" use with caution. If you **** up your phone randomly trying stuff, don't blame me.
UPDATE: As pointed out by KRAD in post 3, the best way to unload the Engineering Mode Apps is to type *#*#308#*#* on the keypad. Don't forget to reboot after that, and the apps will be no longer in the App tray.
You sir, are freak!!!! Have been sitting for days to find how to figure this thing out, THanks alot
can't get rid of the icons one i enabled it... made a shortcut to the uninstaller and it says it can't run.
did this instead in the dialer.. and it worked
*#*#308#*#*
may be easier..... just use superone click and then restart

uninstall swype using system app remover or Titanium backup.
go to http://beta.swype.com/
You will notice it says the new version will not work if swype is already pre-installed on your phone by the manufacturer.
If you try to install you will get an error.
Use astro to navigate to the root directory of your phone. navigate to /system/lib/ and delete libSwypecore. I believe that file is put in place to prevent you from using a new/updated version of swype.
Proceed to follow the link that was emailed to you when you registered on beta.swype.com.
I was able to get a swype board working with dk28 by removing the original sype stuff manually and copying in the new stuff.
I just installed it, it doesn't ad much feature wise, but it does perform very smooth. Its more accurate and stable than the stock Swype.
Here is how to install it.
Go here on your computer and register for Beta:https://beta.swype.com/android/create/
After you register, delete Swype from your phone (must be rooted). Go to system/app using RootExplorer and delete Swype.apk. Then go to system/lib and delete libSwypecore.so
Next, go to https://beta.swype.com/ on your phone. Login and download Swype Installer. Launch it when its done, and follow the on screen instructions. It will ask you to login and license Swype.
Once this is finished, enable Swype, and you are done!
And yes it does work as i'm running it now.
Does this mean I'll have to reinstall the beta over and over once the trial runs out? And what exactly does this update do different than my current version?

Yes. Betas expire and then it becomes a perpetual nuisance. Experienced it with the Moment and am glad to have a stock version.
I am not saying doing it is bad. Some people don't mind and I am not judging anyone's actions as negative in that regard. My personal choice is that I'm tired of doing that.
