Hi Guys,
Is it possible to enable skype video on Vega? I was using Corvus5 and now HoneyVega build 7 and vidoeo option was not available on any of them. Have you been successfull with any other ROMs?
Thanks,
Darek
I think this is because the camera is not enabled/not working at the moment.

Camera is working now, anyone know if Skype works? (my tablet is due to arrive this week)
If you check the other threads regarding Skype, you will find out that it doesn't.

If I do a search for the word "skype" on all Vega forums this is the only thread that comes up, which is why I asked. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else.
I apologise, it seems most of the discussion is over on the MoDoCo forums. Skype with video support has been released for Android, but it has been hard coded to only work with certain devices, and it is limited to Gingerbread (Android 2.3). There is a hacked version which opens up more devices, but so far no-one has reported it successful on the Vega. I have tried it on Corvus5 and can confim it Force Closes.

Like "dmarchant" said, the official Skype app doesn't work with Vega.
There is also a hacked version of Skype, but right now it doesn't support Tegra2 devices.
There are also some alternatives that somewhat do work with Vega:
- Yahoo! Messenger
- ooVoo Video Chat
Now that skype supports ics i wondered if that has any bearing on whether a version might appear for vegacomb? Im desperate to get skype video running on vegacomb for my mum. So any advice would be appreciated
Are there any skype compatible alternatives?
Thanks
Jonny
skype wont work on tegra2 tablets properly, the hardware is insufficient for its needs.
I use skype video calls on POV Mobii 10.1 with out a problem but i use vegacomb 3.2 honey comb rom the cuestion is what rom are using you.

If it's not a pirated app then you can post links here without problem (check previous post for a link to modaco forum).
But you need to make at least 10 posts on XDA in order to post links.
Skype video working, maybe just for me!
Hi Folks,
XDA member for a while but a newbie when it comes to Android (coming from WM). I recently acquired a Vega and getting to grips flashing different ROMS, currently running VegaComb 3.2 9n w/ Update 3. Best so far after trying Corvus5, CM7, Viewcomb and HoneyIce.
As you guessed getting SKype video calls running is/was an issue. I tried many Skype builds from 2.0 up, official and hacked versions but no joy. But after trying, testing and a beer or 2, I stumbled upon this trick. This worked again and again for me running the latest Skype 2.7 from Android market and the Vegacomb ROM mentioned.
1. If brand new installation, attempt to call contact using Voice call only.
2. After person answers, activate video camera (In-call menu > Front camera). It should fail (it did for me). Confirm with contact. If they can see you, happy days. If not, read on.
3. Disconnect video camera (In-call menu > Video Camera off).
4. After a few seconds, attempt to re-activate camera. Hopefully video call will now work as it did for me. And now the kicker...
5. After call, hang up and go to home screen/desktop and go to settings > Applications > Manage applications and choose your Skype installation. Force stop.
6. Restart Skype and repeat steps 2-4.
I tested this over and over calling my dummy Skype contact on laptop running W7 and also tried calling Vega. So long as it's a brand new Skype session i.e. force close and restart, it seems the video camera connect-disable-reconnect trick works.
Also if person is calling you after starting new session, it seems you can answer as video call and it may connect video. If not try steps 2-4.
I'm curious to see if others have any joy with this. I still don't understand how some folks have Skype working! Oh well.
I love Android by the way. I'm truly androidified
The version in post #13 above (dmarchant's post) works fine for me for Skype videocalls (vegacomb 3.2 9n, viewsonic 10s).

It's a very important option to publish a app, but i don't know if its a pirate app, i found it on another forum, and isn't a new version maybe it's a old version the vession that i use sucefully in video calls it's 2.5.4.162-21, i use this version aon my advent vega clone POV-MOBI 10.1"
Its very important if you decide install this version of skype made it on a clean S. O couse if you have a more recent version an istall this maybe you can have a error, another think to have in sigth its that you don't active the autoupdate to this app.
I hope that this little aport be usefull to you.

Ah, you're talking about Skype v2.5.4.162.
"dmarchant" already posted that app one post above yours.

It isn't available in the market any more on my Transformer, and it lists a very specific set of devices for said support. I wonder if there is a way someone can hack this into a working state?
LOL Skype doesn't support video call for android except for the Thunderbolt haha. And devs have been trying to port that over for months but unsuccessful so far.

No, there is an update today that changes the UI quite a bit and apparently adds video calling for the Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia neo and Xperia pro. I copied the apk over to my TF and it works, but no access to video calling functions. I am wondering if I can trick it somehow.
Holy ****... The OP is right.
Skype has been updated to version 2.0.0.45, which includes video calling for selected devices (Nexus S and several others). It's no longer visible on TF in the market, but I updated it on my Galaxy S. It works on SGS, much better interface but no video calling.
Haven't tried this apk on TF yet, and I really hope someone can do something with it.
Edit: Beat me to it!
Gotta remember here.... "Android" doesn't really mean "Every device that runs every version of Android".
I believe there are some hardware issues to be solved to support front camera video on every device, you can't do it globally in one go for every android.
It appears honeycomb support is dropped at all, maybe they release a seperate version.
That's very strange, because I can find it in the market even if a lot of people said that it is no more available... but when I try to install it is saying that it's impossible to install in my device.
Is it normal to find in the market apps that you can't install?

I just downloaded the app to my desire S and video called my friend , the video was actually pretty impressive. it started off a little pixelated but about a minute it in its was very clear and very responsive. the call was made over wifi.
happy.
Here is the info from the apk, if that helps. I tried changing my build.prop to match but after that skype just crashes.

Just a side question that I always want to ask.
How do you copy out the apk downloaded from the market your phone to the tablet?
(Like this Skype apk, its not longer visible for the tablet in the android market), but from your phone, you can download it from the market. Where its stored in the phone and how to copy it out?
Thanks for the info!
if you install appinstaller from the market it has a backup feature that stores your selected .apk file on your sd card in a folder called back up i believe. I'm sure there will be other back up apps out there but this one has worked great for me in the past.
Just got notified of a new Skype version on my tab. Seems like maybe they've allowed Honeycomb installs... anybody tried it?
Ye. Just installed. NO Video. Better UX imho

Hi,
I've been reading that many people make Skype 2 be able to videocall/videochat from the devices that oficially were not supported by skype. I'm not sure if skype is planning to support tf, I hope so though.
But so far, maybe there are people out there who were able to make vidoecalls with skype on TF, if so, please share.
All TF users will be really happy.
thank you
I second this request. It would be great to get Skype on TF. I tried the latest version and it crashes right after I enter my password. So apparently it's not compatible with TF (or any Honeycomb devices?)
Its working perfectly fine on my TF no crashes or anything. there is just no videocalling option.

There's a hacked version that allows video calling on more than the rather limited list of devices, and it's this version that crashes on the TF.

Dave
I too am unable to get skype video chat to work on my transformer. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good video chat app that works well on the transformer while we wait for skype support?

Google Talk, it's on your TF by default..
Morning all....
Im having issues performing gtalk video calls with desktops, ive read somewhere that this is due to the 3.2 update? Is this right, if so is there any way to get it to work?
Thanks in advance,
Dan
im pretty sure it works in prime 1.9, wich is 3.2
Strange. I use quite frequently GTalk (video conf) and have no issues. The other party uses a PC so desktop. Apart from quite low audio quality originating from my side I can say all else works good.
edit: forgot to add that yes I'm on stock 3.2
Hmm how strange... i just installed Pauls HR9 rom so will see if its possible with that.
so where do you download this Gtalk?

It comes preinstalled with the transformer (called TALK). If not, then Google it
Don't think it's 3.2. Gtalk video chat works fine for me.
Make sure the PC has the video chat plug-in installed.
Hope that helps...
I use Gtalk on my Transformer and my LG G2x all the time with my GF back home (when I travel for work). We've used Tango in the past but it sucks compared to GTalk.
Her phone doesn't have a FFC so it was hard for her to video chat but she has a Netbook with a FFC so I set GTalk on there. I downloaded the Video Chat plugin but was still fishy.
The only way I could get it to work on her netbook was just simply have her sign in to Gmail, then it uses the Web GUI to initiate a video chat. Weird thing is that none of my devices show her as being Video Capable, so she's required to initiate the start of it (which is no big deal).
For what its worth, I use Revolver version 3.2 and whatever Custom Kernel is available in Revolver Parts.

What's the exact issue? Make sure you tap your name in top and mark yourself AVAILABLE FOR VIDEO AND VOICE CHAT. Otherwise you wont be able to voice/video chat.
install gtalk from the market. was having problems before with "Talk"

Just got the update as well..."What's New" says 14 additional devices whitelisted for video calling.
What's in this version:
14 additional devices whitelisted for video calling.
Video calls now supported in portrait and landscape. Double-tap to zoom.
Revised Recent view - conversations now grouped around your contacts.
Improved support for Bluetooth headsets.
In-client advertising. (Advertising will not be shown to users that have Skype Credit, a Calling or Skype Premium subscription.)
It is possible to edit and delete IM messages.
Skype will no longer restart in the background when you sign out.
The following devices have also been white-listed for video calling in this release:
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (T-Mobile)
HTC SHOOTER (KDDI)
Sony Ericsson Xperia Live with Walkman
Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V
Acer Iconia Tablet (A500)
LG Optimus Black LANDSCAPE ONLY
LG Optimus 3D LANDSCAPE ONLY
LG Optimus 2x LANDSCAPE ONLY
Motorola Photon
Motorola Droid3 LANDSCAPE ONLY
Motorola Bionic LANDSCAPE ONLY
Motorola Xoom
Motorola Atrix
Yep....tried it this morning, and while I wish it was a little louder, it worked flawlessly.

still no love here. I just upgraded to 3.2, and got the latest skype; there's no video option in settings. Boooo.
true! skype video calling works for me too.
it works! the quality is not as good as on my laptop... but it works.
just the "enable video" option can be enabled only when there is no active conversation.
Sweet, been waiting for this since I got the tab. Damn annoying the way it used to restart in the background all the time. Says it has been fixed, I hope so.

How do I make video call? I enabled video call under the Skype setting. but don't know how.

I tried flashing that fix, and the ZIP wouldn't work in CWM. I have a video option in Skype, but when I start a video call, the video flashes for 2 seconds and then reverts to a voice-only call.
Is it solely because I'm on a custom ROM?

Hi all, i am running VegaComb 3.2 Build 9n Update 3 and the web browser is always force closing.
It mostly does it whn viewing pics on facebook or watching videos.
Maybe something to do with ram over load or something i dont know. But is there a way to solve this?
Unfortunately this is a framework problem in honeycomb related to flash. It is a ram issue but not specificly a Vega problem as it happens on other tablets running honeycomb. Later releases (honey ice ect.) Try to address the problem but no one has solved the problem completely.
ICS is better but has other issues. You should try ICS as that's where all the development is going (into ICS) now.
I need 10 thanks
If you found my post useful please thank me
Do you know a ROM that is overclocked and is ICS? It would be perfect, I have viewcomb but has the flash issue..
